Abstract:In general, a supportive relationship with parents facilitates children’s socioemotional well-being (SEWB). However, adolescents and parents often present discrepant views on their relationship quality, and these discrepancies could lead to meaningful impacts on adolescent adjustment as depicted in the operations triad model. Few studies have investigated how the degree and direction of (in)congruence in perceived adolescent–parent closeness is associated with SEWB and the potential mediation role of resilience in accounting for these associations during the transition from childhood to adolescence. In the present study, 211 Chinese preadolescents (10–12 years old;49.8% boys) and one of their parents reported their perceptions of adolescent–parent closeness. Adolescents also self-reported their SEWB and resilience. The results of polynomial regression with response surface analysis showed that both adolescent–parent congruence and incongruence were related to adolescent SEWB. What’s more, congruently high levels of closeness between adolescents and parents and higher closeness perceived by adolescents than their parents were associated with higher adolescent SEWB via the mediating role of resilience. These findings extended the operations triad model by elaborating the distinct outcomes corresponding to (in)congruent perceptions of adolescent–parent dyads on their closeness and providing new knowledge on the mediating role of resilience. Future research may consider relationship-based family interventions targeting adolescent–parent incongruent views of closeness and incorporate resilience training to facilitate SEWB among Chinese adolescents.
Longitudinal Relations Between Social Relationships and Adolescent Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Roles of Self-compassion and Psychological Resilience

Abstract:Prior studies have shown that adolescents' positive relationships with family, teachers, and peers are separately related to higher life satisfaction. However, the underlying mechanisms linking social relationships to life satisfaction and the potential interactive effects of these social relationships on life satisfaction have received less attention. The current study investigated how positive family function, teacher acceptance, and peer acceptance jointly relate to adolescent life satisfaction, and examined two potential mediators linking these social relationships to life satisfaction: self-compassion and psychological resilience. Participants were 803 Chinese adolescents (43.8% female; Mage at Time 1 = 13.15 years) from a two-wave longitudinal study with data spanning 1 year. Adolescents reported on their social relationships (i.e., family function, teacher acceptance, and peer acceptance), self-compassion, psychological resilience, and life satisfaction. The results demonstrate that Time 1 positive family function, teacher acceptance, and peer acceptance were positively related to Time 2 psychological resilience through Time 1 self-compassion. Greater Time 2 psychological resilience, in turn, was positively linked to Time 2 adolescent life satisfaction. The indirect link from peer acceptance to self-compassion to psychological resilience to life satisfaction was stronger when teacher acceptance was higher (vs. lower), as teacher acceptance strengthened the link between peer acceptance and self-compassion. Results suggest that promoting social relationships, self-compassion, and psychological resilience is important in facilitating life satisfaction.

Abstract:Objective: Parent-child relationship is critical for children's well-being. In China, the large number of left-behind children (LBC, one or both parents leaving for work for at least 6 months) raises public concern. Although LBC often report poor mental health status and higher alienation towards parents, the dynamic trend of subjective well-being in this population, as well as the prediction of alienation towards parents on LBC's subjective well-being, remain unrevealed. This study aimed to examine the dynamic trend of subjective well-being in Chinese LBC and further explore the predictional influence of alienation towards parents, with resilience as a potential mediator. Methods: We recruited 916 rural LBC in China and investigated them at five waves (baseline, and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months later) using Inventory of Alienation towards Parents (IAP), Resilience Scale for Chinese Adolescents (RSCA) and Subjective Happiness Scale (SHS). We used hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) for analysis. Results: At baseline, no significant differences were found in the scores of alienation towards parents, resilience, and subjective well-being on gender, grade, or type of LBC. A significant correlation existed between the scores of alienation towards parents, resilience, and subjective well-being. HLM showed a linear increase in the subjective well-being of rural LBC. Alienation toward both mother and father negatively predicted the developmental trajectory of children's subjective well-being over 12 months. Moreover, resilience partially mediated this prediction. Conclusion: This study is among the first to reveal that alienation towards parents predicts the developmental trajectory of later LBC's subjective well-being, with resilience as a mediator. These findings warrant the necessity of paying attention to alienation toward parents to ensure the mental health of LBC, giving valuable guidance to parents, schools and governments.

Abstract:This study was to examine the double mediating effect of peer attachment, and social self-efficacy on adolescents' perceived parental empathy and life satisfaction. The subjects of the study were 648 students from the first year of junior high school to the second year of high school 3. Using the SPSS 28.0 program for analysis of the collected material, double mediation was performed through the PROCESS Macro for SPSS(ver.4.0) program. There were findings. First, parent empathy, peer attachment, and social self-efficacy were positively and significantly correlated with life satisfaction. Second, parent empathy has a positive effect on life satisfaction. In the relationship between parent empathy and life satisfaction, peer attachment and social self-efficacy were double-mediated. This study is significant in that it showed the importance of parental empathy, furthermore, the importance of peer attachment, and social self-efficacy in adolescents' life satisfaction.

Abstract:Low family socioeconomic status (SES) is linked with adolescents' symptoms of depression, but little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this association. Based on ecosystem theory and the organism-environment interaction model, we tested whether emotional resilience mediated the relationship between family SES and depressive symptoms, and whether parent–child relationship quality moderated the relationship. Adolescents (N = 724) from one middle school in central China completed self-reported questionnaires regarding demographic variables, family SES, emotional resilience, parent–child relationship quality, and depressive symptoms. Regression-based mediation analysis indicated that emotional resilience mediated the association between family SES and depressive symptoms. Parent–child relationship quality moderated two components of this mediation process, namely the effects of low SES on both emotional resilience and depressive symptoms. In both cases, a high quality parent–child relationship ameliorated the adverse effects of low family SES. That is, adolescents with a higher quality relationship with their parent appeared to be less affected by low family SES. The study reveals how and when family SES may affect adolescents' depressive symptoms, and highlights the protective effect of a high quality parent–child relationship in a low SES environment.

Abstract:Introduction. Theory and research support the idea that subjective well-being (positive / negative affect and life satisfaction) is a substantial construct in understanding psychological well-being and mental health. The relevance of life satisfaction in variables affecting psychological well-being has been studied. Life satisfaction in adolescents and its association with sex, age, parental educational styles, peer attachment and emotional intelligence was researched. Groups were compared according to degree of life satisfaction and its relationship with these variables. Method. The sample was composed of 285 secondary school students (49.8% male), average age 15.09 years (12 to 19), and self-report measures of variables were applied to be analyzed: Satisfaction with Life Scale-Child (SWLS-C), Parental Educational Style of Adolescents, Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) y Trait Meta-Mood-Scale-48 (TMMS-48). Results. Results showed a significant high level of satisfaction among adolescents. A significant higher score among boys compared to girls was confirmed, as in the younger compared to older. Correlations were statistically significant between life satisfaction and all dimensions from Parental Educational Style analyzed, except Behavioral Control; with Alienation and Confidence of Peer Attachment; and with Emotional Intelligence Clarity and Repair, as well as statistically significant differences among satisfaction groups in 12 of the 19 variables analyzed. Discussion and Conclusion. Promoting life satisfaction in adolescents is increasingly relevant, due to the role it may play in achieving good psychological adjustment, thus contributing to the promotion and prevention of mental health.

Abstract:Abstract Research studies showed that adolescent problem behaviors were negatively associated with their life satisfaction. However, the negative impact of problem behaviors on life satisfaction has not been sufficiently researched using longitudinal design and the potential mechanisms have not been well examined. The present study attempted to investigate how early adolescents’ externalizing and internalizing behaviors affect their life satisfaction (LS) as well as the mediating effects of parent-child subsystem qualities. Based on a sample of 2669 Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong who were followed up for three years, the present study found that both externalizing and internalizing behavior led to a decrease in LS among adolescents over time. While parental behavioral control and parent-child relational quality mediated the effects of externalizing behavior, parental factors did not mediate the effects of internalizing behavior. More specifically, parents tended to respond to children’s externalizing behavior by reducing parental involvement and warmth, which subsequently resulted in lower LS of adolescents. The findings imply that it is necessary to promote adolescent LS by reducing their problem behaviors. Moreover, parents should develop effective ways to enhance their understanding of children’s emotional and behavioral difficulties.

Parental attachment and subjective well-being in vocational college students: mediating roles for resilience and self-esteem

Abstract:This study examined the mediating role of resilience and self-esteem in the relationship between parental attachment and subjective well-being of young adults. Utilising a cross-sectional design, the study sampled 964 students from five higher vocational colleges in Beijing (female = 61.0%; freshman = 75.6%; age range = 15 to 24 years, mean age 18.78 ± 1.017). The students completed a survey package including the Experiences in Close Relationships-Relationship Structures scale, Self-Esteem Scale, Resilient Trait Scale for Chinese Adults, and Subjective Happiness Scale. The results from structural equation modelling showed that secure attachment was associated with the subjective well-being of vocational college students, in contrast to insecure attachment which was associated with lower subjective well-being. Moreover, the results revealed that resilience and self-esteem were significant mediators between the two types of insecure parental attachment (attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance) and subjective well-being. Furthermore, resilience and self-esteem had a chain mediation effect between insecure attachment and subjective well-being. These findings suggest that resilience and self-esteem are important in how parental attachment histories translate to subjective well-being at young adulthood. Interventions to remedy attachment histories and subjective well-being in young adults should seek to augment their resilience and self-esteem.

Abstract:The present study primarily aimed to examine whether self-esteem serves as a mediator in the associations between parent-child relationships, including parental support and parent-child conflict, and resilience among adolescents. Three hundred and four Chinese adolescents were surveyed with questionnaires and structural equation modeling was adopted to test the mediational hypothesis. The results indicated that the associations between parent-child relationships and adolescent resilience were primarily mediated by self-esteem and that parental support was more robustly linked with adolescent resilience than parent-adolescent conflict. The current study also tested a competitive mediational model in which resilience was the mediator and self-esteem was the outcome variable, and observed that this model was also well-established but inferior to the hypothesized mediational model. These findings extend our insight into the mechanisms underlying the associations among parent-child relationships, self-esteem, and resilience among adolescents and suggest that adolescent resilience promotion programs should focus on improving parental support in a family context and developing individual self-esteem.

Abstract:Parental involvement in education has been positively associated with children's academic development and well-being, but whether high parental involvement, regardless of its form, always yields desirable results in adolescent development remains debatable. The purpose of this study was to investigate the integral contributions of parental involvement, autonomy support, and psychological control in predicting adolescent learning motivation (i.e., achievement goals and academic engagement) and subjective well-being (SWB) by implementing a person-centered approach. Participants included 3378 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 15.60, SD = 1.55; 1513 boys), who completed a survey. Results revealed four parenting profiles: high control‒low involvement (Profile 1; 7.55%), moderate all (Profile 2; 50.65%), high all (Profile 3; 4.00%), and high autonomy support–moderate involvement (Profile 4; 37.80%). Adolescents in Profile 4 were more adaptive, more engaged, and happier than those in other profiles; and those in Profile 1 were more maladaptive, a condition relating to poorer development. Although adolescents in Profile 3 also perceived both high involvement and autonomy support from parents, they actually exhibited levels of learning motivation and SWB similar to those in Profile 2 and experienced higher performance-avoidance goals, negative affect, and lower life satisfaction relative to Profile 4. Findings suggest that more perceived parental involvement is not always better because the effectiveness of involvement partly depends on the approach that parents take.

Abstract:In response the continuous increase of academic stress among the Chinese teenagers, the Chinese government has introduced policies related to home-school cooperation, which may to some extent affect the psychological resilience of adolescents, helping them adapt to the academic pressure. This study aims to explore the relationship between parents’ satisfaction of home-school cooperation and adolescents’ psychological resilience, and the mediating role of parents’ educational anxiety and parenting style. A total of 335 parents and their children were surveyed using questionnaire star conceptualized based on scale of parents’ satisfaction of home-school cooperation, parents’ education anxiety scale, simplified parenting style scale, and psychological resilience scale. The results showed that parents’ satisfaction was positively correlated with emotional warmth and psychological resilience and was significantly negatively correlated with education anxiety. Education anxiety was negatively correlated with emotional warmth and mental resilience. There was a significant positive correlation between psychological resilience and emotional warmth. The mediating path of parents’ satisfaction influencing psychological resilience through education anxiety, emotional warmth, and their chain mediating effects was statistically significant. In conclusion, parents’ satisfaction of home-school cooperation has an impact on adolescent psychological resilience by playing an independent mediating role or a chain mediating role through parents’ education anxiety and emotional warmth.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, there has been a noticeable focus on adolescents' learning and participation activities. Surveys and studies conducted in academic schools in China have reported an increase in cases of adolescents experiencing learning difficulties. The previouis research has linked the concept of learning difficulties and disabilities within the broader cultural, social, and academic context. Existing studies shed light on various factors responsible for triggering learning difficulties and how to resolve them. The literature commonly identifies academic factors, such as the school environment and teaching styles, as potential causes of learning difficulties. However, studies have often neglected social elements, including the role of parents and an individual's self-efficacy. This study examines personal and social factors to analyze their impact on the psychological resilience of adolescents. A quantitative design was adopted where data was collected from adolescents across China through Wen Juan Xing. The findings imply that parental involvement, but not self-efficacy, significantly impacts psychological resilience. Additionally, it was discovered that parental involvement, self-efficacy, and psychological resilience weren’t mediated by achievement motivation. The findings from the study can be used by parents, managers, and other children welfare organizations to develop policies and processes that are supportive of the development and resilience of the adolescents.

Abstract:The present study explored the association between adolescents' perceived parental relationship and their depressive symptoms, as well as the mediating effect of self-compassion and the moderating effect of school connectedness. The present cross-sectional study draws upon data procured from a sample of 6,801 adolescents in junior high schools located in Shenzhen, China. The data were collected in December 2021, marking a year since the outbreak of the pandemic. The parents' marital relationship, adolescents' depressive symptoms, self-compassion and school connectedness were measured by adolescents' self-reported questionnaires. The mediating and moderated mediating models were computed using Mplus 8.0 with bootstrapping method. The results revealed that, after controlling age and gender, (1) marital relationship negatively predicted adolescents' depressive symptoms; (2) adolescents' self-compassion partially mediated the association between parental relationship and depressive symptoms; (3) school connectedness moderated the link between marital relationship and self-compassion as well as the link between the marital relationship and depressive symptoms; and (4) parents' marital relationship has a stronger affect on self-compassion for girls than boys, and girls' self-compassion exerts a slightly stronger influence on depressive symptoms than boys. The findings illuminated that it is of great importance to cultivate adolescent self-compassion and school connectedness, which may block or buffer the effect of poor martial relationship on adolescent depressive symptoms. Moreover, a good sense of school connection may be particularly important in protecting mental health of adolescents whose parents have poor marital relationships.

Abstract:Social anxiety has been a common problem among college students and has an adverse impact on their adaptation outcomes. Among influential factors, parental marital conflict and attachment (parental and peer attachment) have been found to be related to social anxiety symptoms of college students; however, little is known how parental marital conflict and attachment jointly contribute to social anxiety symptoms of college students. The current study explored this issue. Self-reported questionnaires of perception of children of interparental conflict scale, inventory of parent and peer attachment, and the social interaction anxiety scale were administered to 707 undergraduate students (Mean age = 19.27, SD = 0.97). Results indicated that perceived parental marital conflict was positively correlated with social anxiety symptoms and was negatively associated with parental and peer attachment. Parental and peer attachments were negatively correlated with social anxiety symptoms. Mediation analyses indicated that perceived parental marital conflict exerted its indirect effect on social anxiety symptoms through a serial multiple mediation role of parental and peer attachment. The present findings highlight the serial multiple mediation role of parental and peer attachment in the relationship between perceived parental marital conflict and social anxiety symptoms of college students.

Abstract:Introduction: Adolescent suicide is a prevalent issue globally, with various factors contributing to this phenomenon. This study aimed to investigate these factors and their interrelationships to better understand the causes of adolescent suicide and provide evidence for its prevention. Methods: This study conducted among middle school students in Liaoning Province, China, from April to May 2016, A cross-sectional survey was administered to 1,028 students aged 10–19, using instruments such as the Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R), Children's Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale (CPIC), and revised version of Inventory of Parent Attachment (IPPA-R). Result: Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that adolescents aged 15–19, adolescents with strong perceptions of parental conflict were at high risk of suicide intention. Adolescents living in rural areas, adolescents with high mother-child attachment, adolescents with high father-child attachment were at low risk of suicide intention. Furthermore, parent-child attachment played a mediating role between two dimensions of parental conflict perception (resolved situations and response effect) and suicide intention. Discussion: The study concludes that adolescents living in urban areas, older adolescents, adolescents with a high level of parental conflict intensity, and those with low levels of parent-child attachment are at high risk of suicide intention. parent-child attachment played a mediating role between two dimensions of parental conflict perception (resolved situations and response effect) and suicide intention. Abstract:Extensive research has focused on the critical effect of parent-child interactions on peer victimization among children. However, the underlying mediating and moderating mechanisms of this association remain largely unknown. Thus, we examine whether parent-child relationships predict peer victimization through self-esteem and whether resilience moderates this mediation process. A sample of 65,868 fourth grade students aged 8-14 years (10.83 ± 0.83, 53.6% males) completed questionnaires assessing their parent-child relationships, self-esteem, resilience, and peer victimization. A moderated mediation model analysis showed that the negative associations between parent-child interactions and peer victimization were partially mediated by self-esteem. Resilience moderated the meditation process and all three mediated paths were stronger for children with high (vs. low) resilience. High resilience has adequate protection against peer victimization among children. Our findings indicate that poor parent-child relationships, low resilience and low self-esteem are all risk factors for increased levels of peer victimization among children. Resilience is underscored as a crucial protective factor, which could prevent the onset and exacerbation of peer victimization, while low self-esteem is also an important predictor of peer victimization originating from poor parent-child relationships. Thus, internal factors (such as resilience, and self-esteem) cultivated among children, but not external ones, may play key roles in intervening of peer victimization. The positive effects of family support should also be considered when developing intervention strategies to promote self-esteem among children being bullied at school.

Communication or Alienation? Relationship Between Negative Life Events and Mental Health of Left-Behind Children in Rural China

Abstract:To explore the varying mental health outcomes between two comparable left-behind children (LBC) samples, verify the mediation model of mental health via resilience, and study the intermediary function of peer attachment in this relationship, a survey was conducted based on a random sample of 1,368 LBC with the mental health test, adolescent self-rating life checklist, resilience scale and peer attachment scale. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated, and regression and structural equation models were performed. Both-parents absent LBC reported significantly higher scores in negative life events and mental health—and significantly lower scores in resilience and peer attachment—than single-parent absent LBC. Resilience can function as a mediator between negative life events and mental health. Moderated mediation analyses found that negative life events have an indirect effect upon resilience, and such an effect is significantly impacted by peer attachment variables. Most pertinently, peer communication plays a major moderation role in enhancing the ability to cope with negative life events through resilience and promoting mental health in both-parents absent LBC, and the higher peer alienation the lower role in enhancing resilience on low negative life events in single-parent absent LBC. Given the reality of parental absence, Both-parents absence poses a risk to the health of LBC, that is, they are particularly likely to have long-term health problems. These findings can promote the understanding of the potential mediating mechanisms, thus further developing the theoretic system on LBC's mental health.

Abstract:A number of studies have examined the association between parent‒child conflict and the friendship quality of students, while few studies have investigated whether factors such as psychological resilience can protect against these conditions among this population. A total of 662 Chinese adolescents completed a survey assessing parent‒child conflict, friendship quality and resilience based on the conflict dimension of the Family Environment Scale, the Friendship Quality Questionnaire, and the Chinese version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. The results showed that the total friendship quality score of adolescents was above average and that girls had higher friendship quality than boys. The moderately above average resilience of Chinese adolescents was also shown in the study, and there were no significant differences in terms of gender. There was a negative association between parent‒child conflict and adolescents' friendship quality. Individuals' resilience exhibited a strong association with their friendship quality. In addition, resilience played a fully mediating role between parent‒child conflict and friendship quality. These results suggest that interventions intended to bolster psychological resilience may help reduce the severity of parent‒child conflict among adolescents.

Abstract:In this study the relationships between attachment to parents, parental rearing, and adolescent subjective well-being were investigated. A total of 448 senior high school students completed the Adult Attachment Relationship Questionnaire (RQ; Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991), the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR; Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998), EMBU (Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran, or "Own memories of parental rearing"), the Index of Well-Being (IWB) and the Face Subjective Well-Being (FSWB; Andrews & Withey, 1976). The results suggested that the subjective well-being of securely attached adolescents was higher than that of insecurely attached adolescents. Avoidance of parents negatively predicted adolescents' subjective well-being. Maternal punishment was negatively associated with Chinese adolescents' subjective well-being. However, paternal care and warm emotion, as well as paternal overprotection, were positively associated with Chinese adolescents' subjective well-being. Furthermore, maternal negative rearing and paternal positive rearing predicted male adolescents' subjective well-being.
