Abstract:Existing research does not find significant momentum profits in many emerging markets including China. We propose an alternative momentum strategy which groups stocks into return intervals rather than percentiles. We apply the method to the China A-share market and find economically significant momentum profits in weekly returns, but not in monthly returns. The weekly momentum lasts for about 1year. More than half of the profit is realized in the first 3weeks. We apply the method to other Asian equity markets and find significant weekly momentum in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia. These findings suggest that momentum may exist in different formats in different markets. Existence of momentum in a closed equity market like China supports momentum is pervasive in short-term stock returns.

Abstract:We link up the findings of Abraham and Ikenberry (1994) and Wang, Li and Erickson (1997) by showing that negative Monday returns concentrate on days 18 to 26 of a month and they can be completely explained in the statistical sense by the negative returns on the previous Friday. More importantly, we observe a ‘week–four effect’. Not only the returns on Mondays but also returns on other days are lower during the fourth week of a month. We suggest that liquidity selling by individual investors may be the reason.

Abstract:APPENDIX The intermediate-term momentum persistency is not universal among all stocks. More than 40% of winners and losers immediately fall out of their respective groups in the month following formation, resulting in a monthly loss of more than 17% for a momentum strategy constructed on such stocks. By contrast, persistent winners and losers, defined as those staying in their groups for at least one more month, exhibit much stronger momentum persistency. Further analysis indicates that, consistent with the delayed reaction hypothesis for price momentum, the persistency is stronger for stocks with greater information asymmetry and more extensively heterogeneous investor beliefs.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. Since the discovery of momentum effect, people have started the journey of using the momentum effect to construct momentum strategies. As a result of coupling cross-sectional and time-series momentum strategy, dual momentum strategy (DM strategy) has been widely used in practice and closely followed by academics. To address the shortcoming of the classical DM strategy that has not considered the multi-fractal characteristics of the stock market, we construct the fractal dual momentum strategy (FDM strategy) from the two aspects of optimizing the ranking index of the cross-sectional momentum strategy by using fractal statistical measures and improving the timing selection of the time-series momentum strategy by using the trend entropy dimension. The empirical results show that the FDM strategy outperforms the DM strategy. Both in terms of the size and stability of the strategy returns, the FDM strategy shows an optimization effect compared with the DM strategy, which is beneficial to provide investors with better decision-making references.

A new momentum measurement in the Chinese stock market

Abstract:Literature shows that the traditional momentum effect is absence in China, and our evidence also confirms this. However, considering the information of short-term investors' consistent beliefs in price movements, we can capture a significant momentum effect. The short-term information horizon for reflecting the investor belief is relative to the longer information horizon of asset past performance in capturing basic momentum. By constructing an indicator of CB to reflect investors' short-term consistent belief in price movements, we develop a new momentum indicator, CBMOM, as the product of short-term CB and long-run past returns. Based on the data from January 2000 to December 2020 in China, our results show that CBMOM has an advantage of capturing the momentum effect over the past-return measure. In particular, the momentum strategy based on CBMOM with the one-month CB and the one-year past return has the strongest profit. Furthermore, we examine the nonlinear impact of the synergy between CB and the one-year past return on stock returns. Specifically, the one-year past return has a greater positive impact as the cross-sectional CB level increases, but the significance is strong only for the highest-level CB.

The Short Term Momentum Effects and Contrarian Effects: Based on the Data from SME Stock Market

Abstract:Based on the daily yield data from SME stock market in 2011,a research on the momentum effects and contrarian effects of stock market has been done.It is found that when the observation period is one week and the holding period is one week,four weeks or eight weeks,the market can be expected to exist contrarian effects;when the observation period is two-week and the holding period is four weeks or eight weeks,the market can be expected to exist contrarian effects;when we observe the market for four or eight weeks,any situations can be expected to exist contrarian effects.Under the analysis of Jegadeesh Titman's theory,all kinds of portfolios except for(2,2) can be found the evidence of contrarian effects.And the selection of the time period has a significant effect on the research results.Moreover,the dynamic investment strategy can achieve sound revenues with suffering a more dramatic fluctuation.
Four-Factor Momentum Model Based on Returns Interval Grouping

Abstract:Momentum effect has been the focus of the stock market since the end of the last century. The existence of momentum in the market challenges the efficient market hypothesis (EMH). Domestic and foreign scholars use various data and different kinds of methods to research and find that it exists significantly in the international market, but there is no final conclusion about the momentum in the stock market of China. Based on the monthly data of Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares from 2000 to April 2022, this paper examines the influence of historical performance on the expected return of Chinese stocks by means of interval grouping monthly returns. Fama-Macbeth cross-sectional regression shows that expected return is negatively correlated with momentum. Based on Fama-French's three-factor model and Carhart's four-factor model, this paper proposes a method to obtain the winners’ and losers’ portfolios by comparing them with their past returns in the market. This paper also finds that there are significant momentum effect and reversal effect in China stock market, and the short-term proceeds tend to reverse the long-term counterpart tend to show momentum within one year. Time series regressions show that the new reversal factor, with a ranking period of 4 months has a significant marginal contribution to explaining excess stock returns. Meanwhile, the new model works better than CAPM, single momentum factor model and Fama-French three-factor model after log return is added. In addition, this paper also finds that there was not much discrepancy between the momentum effect of the stock market before and after the epidemic. There will be a significant reversal effect for stocks with poor performance before, and, by contrast, if the stock performs well, the momentum effect will be more significant. By comparing momentum factors at different times, the stock market is expected to stabilize and revive after the outbreak.

Abstract:The paper uses daily mean return and also trade volume,trade sum and H- L(high price minus low price) to investigate the impact of different variables to day- of- the- week effect.We use neural networks to classify the data of Shenzhen and Shanghai securities markets which are disposed by normalization and SMOTE.The results show that Monday,Tuesday and Thursday effect are significant in Shanghai and Monday effect is significant in Shenzhen.The results of neural networks sensitive analysis also reveal that day- of- the- week effect is sensitive to trade volume,trade sum and H- L,but not so sensitive to daily mean return.At last,we explain the existence of day- of- the week effect using information flow hypothesis.

Abstract:We propose augmented momentum and reversal trading strategies that incorporate considerations of market entry timing. Market entry timing is determined by two criteria: (1) low uncertainty of the model used to forecast trading return, and (2) a positive forecasted return. Utilizing daily data from the Chinese stock market, we demonstrate that while canonical momentum and reversal trading strategies typically yield negative returns and skewness, our augmented strategies consistently exhibit positive returns and skewness. Additionally, we show that implementation of the two criteria does not significantly diminish trading opportunities, with identified market entry days evenly distributed throughout the sample period.

Abstract:We propose new momentum strategies based on the Almost Stochastic Dominance rules. Relative to classic momentum, our novel strategy achieves better risk-adjusted performance, and exhibits lower volatility and reduced negative skewness in returns. The abnormal returns are statistically and economically significant when testing against alternative common risk factors. Most interestingly, the strategy's ability to generate excess returns is particularly pronounced when using shorter-term ranking and holding periods. Notable improvements in computational efficiency suggest that practical implementability of the strategy shall prevail in cases where a large span of assets is considered. In empirical studies, we apply the new momentum strategies to the Taiwan stock market and compare them with some existing momentum strategies.

Abstract:The paper selects the monthly trading data during 1997 and 2004 of A Shares listed on Shanghai security exchange and Shenzhen security exchange before and in 1996 as research samples,and empirical analysis is made on momentum strategy in medium term in bullish and bearish market respectively.The results show that momentum strategy cannot gain significant abnormal return in bullish market,because of the price reversal of loss portfolios;in bearish market,when the formation period is long the holding period is short,the momentum strategy can earn significant abnormal return which mainly comes from the short sale of loss portfolios.

Abstract:The momentum strategy has been existent for a long time and under numerous versions all of which is based on some form of the past return. It was noted recently that this metric of taking the difference of two prices might be a too stringent transformation to achieve stationary. For this matter, a momentum strategy that is not based on simple past return was proposed, called fractional momentum strategy , that retains some memory in the price series. Empirical results have demonstrated significant returns improvement of this strategy over the traditional one albeit under weekly rebalancing. This article investigates the applicability of the strategy under more realistic rebalancing frequencies and finds that the strategy performs inferior to the traditional momentum strategy as rebalancing frequency is decreased.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the weekly idiosyncratic momentum (IMOM) as well as its risk-adjusted versions with respect to various idiosyncratic risk metrics. Using the A-share individual stocks in the Chinese market from January 1997 to December 2017, we first evaluate the performance of the weekly momentum and idiosyncratic momentum based on raw returns and idiosyncratic returns, respectively. After that the univariate portfolio analysis is conducted to investigate the return predictability with respect to various idiosyncratic risk metrics. Further, we perform a comparative study on the performance of the IMOMportfolios with respect to various risk metrics. At last, we explore the possible explanations to the IMOM as well as risk-based IMOM portfolios. We find that 1) there is a prevailing contrarian effect and a IMOM effect for the whole sample; 2) a negative relation exists between most of the idiosyncratic risk metrics and the cross-sectional returns, and better performance is found that is linked to idiosyncratic volatility (IVol) and maximum drawdowns (IMDs); 3) additionally, the IVol-based and IMD-based IMOM portfolios exhibit a better explanatory power to the IMOM portfolios with respect to other risk metrics; 4) finally, higher profitability of the IMOM as well as IVol-based and IMD-based IMOM portfolios is found to be related to upside market states, high levels of liquidity and high levels of investor sentiment.

Abstract:This paper concentrates on the time series momentum or contrarian effects in the Chinese stock market. We evaluate the performance of the time series momentum strategy applied to major stock indices in mainland China and explore the relation between the performance of time series momentum strategies and some firm-specific characteristics. Our findings indicate that there is a time series momentum effect in the short run and a contrarian effect in the long run in the Chinese stock market. The performances of the time series momentum and contrarian strategies are highly dependent on the look-back and holding periods and firm-specific characteristics.

Abstract:We find the momentum of predictability (MoP) that the forecasting performance of some univariate regressions is persistent. A univariate model which outperforms the benchmark during recent past period can also beat the benchmark in the near future out-of-sample. Accordingly, we propose a forecasting strategy that involves switching between a model of interest and the benchmark model, based on observations of their recent past performance. We obtain significant stock return predictability both in statistical and economic terms. Predictability is found to be stronger for longer forecasting horizons. Success of the MoP strategy is also seen in forecasting exchange rates.
