Abstract:This paper not only confirms the negative predictive power of a stock's salient returns, but also reveals the incremental predictability of its salient trading volumes on expected returns in the Chinese stock market. Aside from the fact that the salient volume effect is stronger when investor disagreement is higher, both negative salience effects are insensitive to stock capital states (gain or loss), lottery demand, short-term reversal, investor sentiment, and attention-grabbing news or events. Salience-induced price pressure (order imbalance) analysis suggests that both institutional and retail investors can be salient thinkers regarding the stock return and trading volume.

Abstract:Stock returns unexplained by “fundamentals,” such as cash flow news, are more likely to reverse in the short run than those linked to fundamental news. Making novel use of analyst forecast revisions to measure cash flow news, a simple enhanced reversal strategy generates a risk-adjusted return four times the size of the standard reversal strategy. Importantly, isolating the component of past returns not driven by fundamentals provides a cleaner setting for testing existing theories of short-term reversals. Using this approach, we find that both liquidity shocks and investor sentiment contribute to the observed short-term reversal, but in different ways: Specifically, the reversal profit is attributable to liquidity shocks on the long side because fire sales more likely demand liquidity, and it is attributable to investor sentiment on the short side because short-sale constraints prevent the immediate elimination of overvaluation. Abstract:This paper suggests that mispricing occurs due to a phenomenon known as salience bias. Salience bias arises when investors focus too much on salient payoffs, such as short-term gains, and ignore the underlying financial health of the companies. Salience bias comes into play when investors pay excessive attention to firms with salient-upsides return but weak fundamentals, leading to overpricing of stocks and lower expected returns. Conversely, when investors pay insufficient attention to firms with salient-downsides return but strong fundamentals, stocks may be underpriced, resulting in higher expected returns. This paper also indicates that the uncertainty of stocks has amplification effects on salience bias and the predictive ability of salience bias is stronger when uncertainty is greater.

Abstract:This study explores the relationship between stocks' change in salience (CS) and the cross-section of stock returns. We find that the change in salience can negatively predict future stock returns. Investors, attracted by salient attributes of choices, overestimate prominent rising trends in stock historical return performance and extrapolate, leading stocks with prominent rising trends to be overpriced and earning lower subsequent returns. In terms of potential mechanisms, we find that costly arbitrage and lottery preference are two underlying mechanisms behind the mispricing of CS. The CS effect is more pronounced among stocks with greater costly arbitrage and greater lottery preference. Moreover, both institutional and individual investors are shown to generate distortions of expectations induced by salient thinking. Our findings are robust after considering common risk factors, shell contamination, short-term reversals, the prospect theory, and investor attention.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of momentum ambiguity on investor trading behavior. Specifically, our findings suggest that in the presence of momentum (reversal) effects in asset returns, investors' demand for the risky asset comprises myopic, hedging, and speculative components. Due to the opposite signs of hedging and speculative demands, the relationship between total demand and momentum effects may display a non-monotonic trend. The introduction of momentum uncertainty leads investors to adopt a more conservative approach, and in some cases, abstain from trading the risky asset altogether. Additionally, we observe heterogeneity in the impact of momentum and reversal uncertainty levels on investor demand.

Abstract:This paper concentrates on the time series momentum or contrarian effects in the Chinese stock market. We evaluate the performance of the time series momentum strategy applied to major stock indices in mainland China and explore the relation between the performance of time series momentum strategies and some firm-specific characteristics. Our findings indicate that there is a time series momentum effect in the short run and a contrarian effect in the long run in the Chinese stock market. The performances of the time series momentum and contrarian strategies are highly dependent on the look-back and holding periods and firm-specific characteristics.

Abstract:Momentum profits, resulting from buying winners and selling losers, are robust in the stock market worldwide. However, more than 40% of winners and losers immediately fall out of their respective groups in the month following formation, suggesting that intermediate-term momentum persistency is not universal among all stocks with extreme past performance. The return reversals that these nonpersistent winners and losers exhibit in the month following formation are strong, resulting in a monthly loss of more than 17% for a momentum strategy constructed on such stocks. By contrast, persistent winners and losers, defined as those staying in their groups for at least one more month, exhibit much stronger performance persistency. Further analysis indicates that the persistency is stronger for stocks with greater information asymmetry and more extensively heterogeneous investor beliefs, consistent with the underreaction hypothesis for price momentum.

Abstract:A study of the short-term contrarian strategy in China's stock market is conducted by applying Lo,Mavkinlays contrarian strategy,Jegadeesh and Titmans decomposition.Results show that there are statistically significant profits for short-term contrarian strategy in China's stock market.Further analysis indicates that:(1) the most important source of short-term contrarian profits is the overreaction to firm-specific information, not the lead-lag structure;(2) the size of contrarian profits is correlated with market capitalization.(3) the introduction of turnover shock significantly optimizes the contrarian strategy,implying that turnover comprises some important information about the future stock price.The models of both De Long and Hong,Stein,as well as market manipulation can account for the short-term contrarian profits.

Abstract:This paper focuses on discovering the main reason why the momentum and reversal take place in the stock market. Taking into consideration of the character of behavior of the investors, we set up dynamic models to describe the investing activities of both informed trader and uninformed trader with bounded rationality. On the foundation of the study on the stability of the investment model and observing the evolutionary process in controlled laboratory market, we find that the sensitive responses of informed traders could keep the market momentum, and the increasing in the decision weight of uninformed traders is the main reason why the reversal occurs, which could also account for the appearance of contrarian traders before reversals.

Abstract:We propose augmented momentum and reversal trading strategies that incorporate considerations of market entry timing. Market entry timing is determined by two criteria: (1) low uncertainty of the model used to forecast trading return, and (2) a positive forecasted return. Utilizing daily data from the Chinese stock market, we demonstrate that while canonical momentum and reversal trading strategies typically yield negative returns and skewness, our augmented strategies consistently exhibit positive returns and skewness. Additionally, we show that implementation of the two criteria does not significantly diminish trading opportunities, with identified market entry days evenly distributed throughout the sample period.

Abstract:This paper documents the significant and robust salience theory (ST) effect in China, which differs from the findings in the literature. First, the upside-ST effect from stocks with salient upsides is stronger than the downside-ST effect from stocks with salient downsides; the opposite pattern is documented in the US market. We demonstrate that this pattern is due to strong lottery preference and short-sale constraint in China, where investors are prone to engage in salient thinking when they bet on lottery stocks; meanwhile, short-sale constraint prevents rational investors from correcting salience-induced mispricing. Second, the salience effect remains strong in big stocks and high institutional ownership stocks. Our findings are consistent with the existing evidence that fund managers cater to fund investors' lottery preferences to hold lottery stocks. Our study provides new insights into the sources of the salience effect in China, especially salience's interaction with investor behaviors and the market's institutional characteristics.

Abstract:The paper investigates the influence and explanatory power of aggregate insiders trading activities on momentum trading strategies. We find that insiders trading activities can predict cross-sectional returns and can strengthen the naı̈ve momentum effects. The risk factors such as size and BM cannot explain the strong momentum effects in our refined momentum strategies. We interpret our findings as that the continuous overreaction causes the mediate term momentum effects and over pricing. In the long term, these overly priced stocks will be corrected with passing time. The correction of over pricing causes long-term reversals.

Abstract:A strategy that holds daily long and short positions, respectively, in assets with low and high past overnight returns - overnight-intraday reversal strategy - generates for the US stock market an average excess return that is five times larger when compared to a conventional short-term reversal strategy. Our results remain robust to using international stocks as well as equity index, interest rate, commodity, and currency futures. We find that overnight-intraday reversals are consistent with the simulated patterns generated by the continuous-time model with periodic market closures of Hong and Wang (2000). Finally, we demonstrate that only intraday returns matter for the reversal-based liquidity measure of Pastor and Stambaugh (2003).

Abstract:Based on the daily yield data from SME stock market in 2011,a research on the momentum effects and contrarian effects of stock market has been done.It is found that when the observation period is one week and the holding period is one week,four weeks or eight weeks,the market can be expected to exist contrarian effects;when the observation period is two-week and the holding period is four weeks or eight weeks,the market can be expected to exist contrarian effects;when we observe the market for four or eight weeks,any situations can be expected to exist contrarian effects.Under the analysis of Jegadeesh Titman's theory,all kinds of portfolios except for(2,2) can be found the evidence of contrarian effects.And the selection of the time period has a significant effect on the research results.Moreover,the dynamic investment strategy can achieve sound revenues with suffering a more dramatic fluctuation.

Abstract:This study explores the role of investor sentiment in a broad set of anomalies in cross-sectional stock returns. We consider a setting where the presence of market-wide sentiment is combined with the argument that overpricing should be more prevalent than underpricing, due to short-sale impediments. Long-short strategies that exploit the anomalies exhibit profits consistent with this setting. First, each anomaly is stronger - its long-short strategy is more profitable - following high levels of sentiment. Second, the short leg of each strategy is more profitable following high sentiment. Finally, sentiment exhibits no relation to returns on the long legs of the strategies.

Abstract:We show that the momentum and long-term reversal effects are explained by a conditional factor pricing model. We use instrumented principal components analysis to construct an improved conditional model in which dynamic loadings are functions of observable firm characteristics. Model-based expected returns, which are solely determined by exposures to systematic risk factors, provide much stronger predictive power for future realized returns than momentum or long-term reversal. We show that these return trend variables "work" because they are imperfect proxies for time-varying beta compensation, and that properly measured conditional betas render the effects of momentum and long-term reversal small and insignificant. In contrast, the short-term reversal phenomenon is distinct from the conditional pricing model, consistent with a pure liquidity effect.
