Abstract:This paper develops a novel investor sentiment index using a MF-DFM based on ten years' worth of daily trading data of the CSI 300 index. By employing a TVP-SV-VAR model, it examines the interplay between investor sentiment, short trading, and stock market volatility. Furthermore, the study explores time-varying nonlinear effects under different market conditions. The findings reveal that investor sentiment heightens market volatility, while an increase in short trading volume tends to reduce it. The impact of investor sentiment on short trading volume is multifaceted and varies depending on the scenario. Further analysis suggests that investor sentiment and stock market volatility can reinforce each other in bull markets. In contrast, bear markets see investors strategically using securities lending for short trading and risk hedging, which indicates a substitution effect between the stock market and the securities lending market. This study has implications for promoting the healthy development of financial markets.

Abstract:This study explores the role of investor sentiment in a broad set of anomalies in cross-sectional stock returns. We consider a setting where the presence of market-wide sentiment is combined with the argument that overpricing should be more prevalent than underpricing, due to short-sale impediments. Long-short strategies that exploit the anomalies exhibit profits consistent with this setting. First, each anomaly is stronger - its long-short strategy is more profitable - following high levels of sentiment. Second, the short leg of each strategy is more profitable following high sentiment. Finally, sentiment exhibits no relation to returns on the long legs of the strategies.

Abstract:Investor sentiment wields substantial influence within the stock market, reflecting emotional states and beliefs held by investors, encompassing optimism, pessimism, and fear. As attention to its impact surges, the interplay of sentiment, trading decisions, stock prices, and trading volumes gains prominence. This paper examines investor sentiment's mechanisms, exploring its distinct forms and transmission channels, and highlights its critical role in shaping market expectations. Optimistic sentiment fosters a belief in market upswings, potentially leading to over investment and market bubbles. Conversely, pessimistic sentiment drives market pessimism, leading to panic selling and steep market declines. Fear sentiment triggers market volatility, amplifying fluctuations during significant events. The diffusion of investor sentiment through media channels and its interplay with market expectations is explored. Insights into investor sentiment's integration with stock market returns, classification methods, and proxy variables are showcased. Domestic research innovation is underscored, combining foreign insights with China's unique context. However, challenges remain, owing to sentiment's subjectivity and market complexities. Future research avenues are identified: understanding sentiment drivers, enriching theoretical frameworks, and leveraging technology for predictive accuracy. Psychological theories, behavioral finance, and AI-driven analytics offer promising directions. Interdisciplinary collaboration is advocated to unveil the intricate relationships between investor sentiment, market fundamentals, and external factors, enabling more informed decision-making and refined risk management. Investor sentiment's significance is undeniable. Predict financial text sentiment: an empirical examination

Abstract:Purpose Stock market has always been lucrative for various investors. But, because of its speculative nature, it is difficult to predict the price movement. Investors have been using both fundamental and technical analysis to predict the prices. Fundamental analysis helps to study structured data of the company. Technical analysis helps to study price trends, and with the increasing and easy availability of unstructured data have made it important to study the market sentiment. Market sentiment has a major impact on the prices in short run. Hence, the purpose is to understand the market sentiment timely and effectively. Design/methodology/approach The research includes text mining and then creating various models for classification. The accuracy of these models is checked using confusion matrix. Findings Out of the six machine learning techniques used to create the classification model, kernel support vector machine gave the highest accuracy of 68%. This model can be now used to analyse the tweets, news and various other unstructured data to predict the price movement. Originality/value This study will help investors classify a news or a tweet into "positive", "negative" or "neutral" quickly and determine the stock price trends.

Abstract:This article examines how investor sentiment affects positive feedback trading behavior. By analyzing the daily closing total return of CSI 300 index and its individual returns of stocks, we find that relatively high or low sentiment induces active positive feedback trading. With a specific indicator of sentiment, we explain the microstructure setting of the relationship between positive feedback trading and sentiment. We adopt the classical feedback model from Sentana and Wadhwani (1992) to measure positive feedback trading behavior. By adding sentiment factor to the model, we successfully explain how sentiment influences the behavior of both feedback traders and rational investors. The empirical findings suggest that positive feedback traders are more likely to trade when the prices of most securities move forward together. When the sentiment of feedback traders is at an intermediate level, the feedback trading behavior is insignificant.

Abstract:In the presence of sentiment fluctuations, arbitrageurs may engage in different strategies leading to dispersed sentiment exposures. We find that hedge funds in the top decile ranked by sentiment beta outperform those in the bottom decile by 0.59% per month on a risk-adjusted basis, with the spread being larger among skilled funds. We also find that about 10% of hedge funds have sentiment timing skill that positively correlates with fund sentiment beta and contributes to fund performance. Our findings show that skilled hedge funds can earn high returns by predicting and exploiting sentiment changes rather than betting against mispricing.

Abstract:The study of the impact of investor sentiment on stock returns has gained increasing momentum in the past few years. It has been widely accepted that public mood is correlated with financial markets. However, only a few studies discussed how the public mood would affect one of the fundamental problems of computational finance: portfolio management. In this study, we use public financial sentiment and historical prices collected from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to train multiple machine learning models for automatic wealth allocation across a set of assets. Unlike previous studies which set as target variable the asset prices in the portfolio, the variable to predict here is represented by the best asset allocation strategy ex post. Experiments performed on five portfolios show that long short-term memory networks are superior to multi-layer perceptron and random forests producing, in the period under analysis, an average increase in the revenue across the portfolios ranging between 5% (without financial mood) and 19% (with financial mood) compared to the equal-weighted portfolio. Results show that our all-in-one and end-to-end approach for automatic portfolio selection outperforms the equal-weighted portfolio. Moreover, when using long short-term memory networks, the employment of sentiment data in addition to lagged data leads to greater returns for all the five portfolios under evaluation. Finally, we find that among the employed machine learning algorithms, long short-term memory networks are better suited for learning the impact of public mood on financial time series.

Abstract:As machine learning ascends the peak of computer science zeitgeist, the usage and experimentation with sentiment analysis using various forms of textual data seems pervasive. The effect is especially pronounced in formulating securities trading strategies, due to a plethora of reasons including the relative ease of implementation and the abundance of academic research suggesting automated sentiment analysis can be productively used in trading strategies. The source data for such analyzers ranges a broad spectrum like social media feeds, micro-blogs, real-time news feeds, ex-post financial data etc. The abstract technique underlying these analyzers involve supervised learning of sentiment classification where the classifier is trained on annotated source corpus, and accuracy is measured by testing how well the classifiers generalizes on unseen test data from the corpus. Post training, and validation of fitted models, the classifiers are used to execute trading strategies, and the corresponding returns are compared with appropriate benchmark returns (for e.g., the S&P500 returns). In this paper, we introduce $\underline{a\ novel\ technique\ of\ using\ price\ volatilities\ to\ empirically\ determine\ the\ sentiment\ in\ news\ data}$, instead of the traditional reverse approach. We also perform meta sentiment analysis by evaluating the efficacy of existing sentiment classifiers and the precise definition of sentiment from securities trading context. We scrutinize the efficacy of using human-annotated sentiment classification and the tacit assumptions that introduces subjective bias in existing financial news sentiment classifiers.

Abstract:Making investment decisions by utilizing sentiment data from social media (SM) is starting to become a more tangible concept. There has been a broad investigation into this field of study over the last decade, and many of the findings have promising results. However, there is still an opportunity for continued research, firstly, in finding the most effective way to obtain relevant sentiment data from SM, then building a system to measure the sentiment, and finally visualizing it to help users make investment decisions. Furthermore, much of the existing work fails to factor SM metrics into the sentiment score effectively. This paper presents a novel prototype as a contribution to the field of study. In our work, a detailed overview of the topic is given in the form of a literature and technical review. Next, a prototype is designed and developed using the findings from the previous analysis. On top of that, a novel approach to factor SM metrics into the sentiment score is presented, with the goal of measuring the collective sentiment of the data effectively. To test the proposed approach, we only used popular stocks from the S&P500 to ensure large volumes of SM sentiment was available, adding further insight into findings, which we then discuss in our evaluation.

Abstract:This study shows that investor sentiment plays an important role in affecting the pricing dynamics between the spot and futures markets. The empirical evidence suggests that investor sentiment has a positive impact on price volatility and the bid-ask spread on both the spot and futures markets, which induces higher arbitrage risk and trading costs during high sentiment periods. As a consequence, during high sentiment periods, informed traders become less willing to leverage their information advantages on the futures market, which diminishes the futures markets’ leading informational role and contributions to price discovery. Our findings provide support for the theory of limits to arbitrage.

Abstract:This paper develops textual sentiment measures for China's stock market by extracting the textual tone of 60 million messages posted on a major online investor forum in China from 2008 to 2018. We conduct sentiment extraction by using both conventional dictionary methods based on customized word lists and supervised machine-learning methods (support vector machine and convolutional neural network). The market-level textual sentiment index is constructed as the average of message-level sentiment scores, and the textual disagreement index is constructed as their dispersion. These textual measures allow us to test a range of predictions of classical behavioral asset-pricing models within a unified empirical setting. We find that textual sentiment can significantly predict market return, exhibiting a salient underreaction-overreaction pattern on a time scale of several months. This effect is more pronounced for small and growth stocks, and is stronger under higher investor attention and during more volatile periods. We also find that textual sentiment exerts a significant and asymmetric impact on future volatility. Finally, we show that trading volume will be higher when textual sentiment is unusually high or low and when there are more differences of opinion, as measured by our textual disagreement. Based on a massive textual dataset, our analysis provides support for the noise-trading theory and the limits-to-arbitrage argument, as well as predictions from limited-attention and disagreement models.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the impact of market sentiment on cryptocurrency returns. To accomplish this, we use a novel dataset that captures a multitude of attitudes, moods, and emotions extracted from a vast amount of news and social media content. Our findings indicate that social media sentiment significantly predicts crypto returns, while sentiment from news media does not. Additionally, we observe that fundamental events play a role in shaping sentiment, but market exuberance---sentiment unrelated to fundamental events---is a strong and robust predictor of returns. Furthermore, we find that market exuberance is positively related to momentum return but does not positively predict volatility. This suggests that sentiment influences returns through price perception and demand shocks rather than the risk premium channel. Overall, our research highlights the importance of sentiment in understanding and predicting cryptocurrency market dynamics.

Abstract:The feasibility of making profitable trades on a single asset on stock exchanges based on patterns identification has long attracted researchers. Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Natural Language Processing have gained notoriety in these single-asset trading tasks, but only a few works have explored their combination. Moreover, some issues are still not addressed, such as extracting market sentiment momentum through the explicit capture of sentiment features that reflect the market condition over time and assessing the consistency and stability of RL results in different situations. Filling this gap, we propose the Sentiment-Aware RL (SentARL) intelligent trading system that improves profit stability by leveraging market mood through an adaptive amount of past sentiment features drawn from textual news. We evaluated SentARL across twenty assets, two transaction costs, and five different periods and initializations to show its consistent effectiveness against baselines. Subsequently, this thorough assessment allowed us to identify the boundary between news coverage and market sentiment regarding the correlation of price-time series above which SentARL's effectiveness is outstanding.

Abstract:Intelligent online portfolios have become an important research topic in the field of quantitative finance. This paper proposes an online portfolio based on trend trading strategy using fuzzy logic technology analysis method and considering investor sentiment. Firstly, the paper uses SVM classification algorithm to analyze stock comment text data in online forums and constructs investor sentiment indicators. Secondly, the paper transforms the heuristic algorithm of technical trading into corresponding fuzzy IF-THEN rules and combines them into a fuzzy investment decision system. Thirdly, the paper constructs a new online portfolio based on trend trading strategy. Finally, the paper uses the text data of investor reviews and stock trading data on the internet for empirical analysis to illustrate the effectiveness of the online portfolio strategy constructed. The results indicate that online portfolios constructed based on trend trading strategies can achieve higher performance than benchmark strategies while considering transaction costs.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel adaptive algorithm for the automated short-term trading of financial instrument. The algorithm adopts a semantic sentiment analysis technique to inspect the Twitter posts and to use them to predict the behaviour of the stock market. Indeed, the algorithm is specifically developed to take advantage of both the sentiment and the past values of a certain financial instrument in order to choose the best investment decision. This allows the algorithm to ensure the maximization of the obtainable profits by trading on the stock market. We have conducted an investment simulation and compared the performance of our proposed with a well-known benchmark (DJTATO index) and the optimal results, in which an investor knows in advance the future price of a product. The result shows that our approach outperforms the benchmark and achieves the performance score close to the optimal result.

Abstract:Economic theory suggests that pervasive factors should be priced in the cross-section of stock returns. However, our evidence shows that portfolios with higher risk exposure do not earn higher returns. More importantly, our evidence shows a striking two-regime pattern for all 10 macro-related factors: high-risk portfolios earn significantly higher returns than low-risk portfolios following low-sentiment periods, whereas the exact opposite occurs following high-sentiment periods. These findings are consistent with a setting in which market-wide sentiment is combined with short-sale impediments and sentiment-driven investors undermine the traditional risk-return tradeoff, especially during high-sentiment periods.

Abstract:Abstract: Predicting movements in the stock market is a novel use of sentiment analysis's growing body of knowledge. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential of NLP for predicting stock market movements by analyzing textual data sources such as news articles, social media posts, as well as earnings reports. The research examines current approaches, applications, and difficulties in sentiment analysis by drawing on extensive surveys and reviews [1], [2]. It also investigates the use of pre-trained models in NLP and the potential biases of such models [6]. Important research findings [3], [17] suggest that NLP-based sentiment analysis models, especially those employing deep learning architectures, show promising results in financial forecasting. There are, however, several difficulties associated with these models. These include the requirement of huge datasets and the elimination of biases. This study has far-reaching ramifications. One benefit is a more nuanced comprehension of the potential and pitfalls of natural language processing for sentiment analysis in the financial markets, which is useful for both analysts and investors. Second, it provides opportunities for more study to enhance the precision and dependability of such models, which ultimately aids in the development of more steady and well-informed monetary judgements.
Social Learning and Sentiment Contagion in the Bitcoin Market

Abstract:Using novel data on investors' social interactions, we document sentiment contagion as a direct consequence of social learning in the Bitcoin market. Our findings suggest that the social learning process is inefficient, as investors respond positively to social sentiment, but social sentiment does not positively predict returns. Echo chamber effect and selective interpretation of information may simultaneously contribute to such inefficiency. We further confirm that sentiment contagion is not a sideshow: at the individual level, sentiment contagion predicts the direction of trading conditional on its occurrence; at the Bitcoin market level, the aggregated sentiment contagion index positively predicts market trading volume and volatility. Moreover, we highlight the error-prone nature of social learning, wherein the socially constructed optimism predicts Bitcoin crashes. Finally, we establish a link between social learning and bubbles: the elevated propagation of optimism is highly correlated with the trading volume.

Abstract:We extend the theory and empirics in Chen, Hong, and Stein (2002) by assuming that investors subject to market sentiment hold a biased belief in the aggregate. With a dynamic multi-asset model, we predict that the breadth-return relationship can be either positive or negative depending on the relative strength of two offsetting forces — disagreement and sentiment. Using the sentiment index developed in Baker and Wurgler (2006, 2007), we find evidence consistent with our predictions. The breadth-return relationship is positive when the sentiment effect is small. However, the relationship becomes negative when (i) the time-series variation of market-wide sentiment is high and (ii) the cross-sectional dispersion of firm-specific exposure to market-wide sentiment variation is large. Our unified framework reconciles a few seemingly inconsistent empirical studies in this literature and explains puzzling cross-sectional return patterns observed during the Internet bubble and the subprime crisis periods.
