Abstract:Based on social learning theory, childhood physical abuse (CPA) plays an important role in bullying. There are two forms of bullying: traditional and cyber bullying. However, most previous studies have only investigated traditional or cyber bullying, and few studies have investigated the two forms of bullying. To intervene in bullying, it is necessary to investigate how CPA influences traditional and cyber bullying. This study examined the relationship between CPA and bullying (including traditional and cyber bullying) and its mechanisms: the mediating roles of belief in a just world (BJW) and Machiavellianism, as well as the moderating role of friend support. The participants were 605 secondary vocational school students (Mage = 16.19 years, SD = 0.79). Participants filled out questionnaires assessing their CPA, traditional bullying, cyber bullying, BJW, Machiavellianism, and friend support. The findings revealed the predictive effect of CPA on traditional bullying (total effect = 0.37, p < 0.001) was greater than on cyber bullying (total effect = 0.17, p < 0.001). BJW and Machiavellianism parallelly mediated the relationship between CPA and bullying (including traditional and cyber bullying). Friend support moderated the relationship between CPA and bullying (including traditional and cyber bullying), as well as the relationship between CPA and Machiavellianism. The magnitude of the relationships was greater as friend support became greater. These findings suggested that CPA influenced traditional and cyber bullying via BJW and Machiavellianism, and friend support played a moderating role. Results provide various programs for bullying intervention by uncovering its underlying mechanisms.
