Childhood psychological maltreatment predicts adolescents’ bullying victimization: Deviant peer affiliation and teacher-student relationships as moderators

Abstract:Background Bullying victimization is a hot and difficult issue that has sparked worldwide concern. However, few studies have clarified whether childhood psychological maltreatment increases adolescents’ bullying victimization and which factors would moderate the strength of this relation. Objectives Based on the lifestyle-routine activities theory, the current study examined the relation between childhood psychological maltreatment and adolescents’ bullying victimization and sought to determine whether deviant peer affiliation and teacher-student relationships would moderate this relation at the same time. Participants and setting Participants were 2,286 adolescents from four middle schools in China. Methods The Hayes’s (2013) PROCESS macro (Model 3) was used to test the moderation effect. Results The results indicated that childhood psychological maltreatment positively predicted bullying victimization (β = 0.20, p < 0.001). Deviant peer affiliation moderated the relation between childhood psychological maltreatment and bullying victimization (β = 0.06, p < 0.001). Specifically, the relation between childhood psychological maltreatment and bullying victimization became stronger for high deviant peer affiliation adolescents (b simple  = 0.24, p < 0.001). More importantly, teacher-student relationships further moderated the moderating effect of deviant peer affiliation (β = -0.03, p < 0.05). Specifically, for high deviant peer affiliation adolescents, the predictive effect of childhood psychological maltreatment on bullying victimization became much stronger when they had negative teacher-student relationships (b simple  = 0.31, p < 0.001). Conclusions Our study identifies how childhood psychological maltreatment is related to bullying victimization and the underlying mechanisms, which have important theoretical and practical significance for preventing or intervening in adolescents’ bullying victimization.
