Abstract:Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Ahead of Print. Relationships in the family (e.g., child maltreatment in families) and school environments (e.g., psychological maltreatment by teachers) are influential in children's socialization, but how family and teacher–student domains mutually affect each other and which mediating mechanisms are involved in cross-domain spillover at the within-person level are not well understood. This study examined the bidirectional relations between child maltreatment in families and psychological maltreatment by teachers and whether internalizing and externalizing problems functioned as mediators between them after separating between-person effects from within-person effects. A total of 4270 Chinese children (54.9% boys; Mage = 9.92; SD = 0.51) participated in a five-wave longitudinal study with 6-month intervals. Results from random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling mainly found that: (1) Child maltreatment in families predicted psychological maltreatment by teachers, and vice versa; (2) child maltreatment in families influenced psychological maltreatment by teachers through externalizing problems; child maltreatment in families affected the likelihood of psychological maltreatment by teachers via the sequential effect from internalizing problems to externalizing problems at the within-person level; and (3) internalizing and externalizing problems mediated the longitudinal relations from psychological maltreatment by teachers to child maltreatment in families separately. Findings demonstrated bidirectional spillover effects in the domains of family and teacher-student relationships, suggesting that children may be trapped in a vicious cycle of negative relationships through internalizing and externalizing problems, either directly or indirectly. Thus, these two domains influence each other through children's internalizing and externalizing problems. Interventions aimed at addressing maltreatment should include family, school, and individual (i.e., internalizing and externalizing problems) components to prevent a downward spiral.

Abstract:Background: Rates of physical and emotional abuse are high among Chinese adolescents and elicit distinct psychopathologies. However, it remains unclear whether physical and emotional abuse relate to depression and behavior problems similarly or differently. In addition, few studies have examined if they share underlying mechanisms in adolescents.Objective: This study used longitudinal data to examine the mechanisms underlying the effect of physical and emotional abuse on depression and problematic behaviors through emotional regulation and anger in Chinese adolescents. Participants and settings: Participants were 1689 adolescents (with age ranging from 12 to 17 years) from junior and senior high schools in Zhejiang Province, China.Methods: Participants completed a childhood trauma questionnaire and an emotion regulation strategies questionnaire at time 1 (T1), and they completed an anger scale, a depression scale, and a problematic behaviors questionnaire one year later (T2). Structural equation modeling was used to examine the research hypotheses. Results: Physical abuse had direct positive effects on problematic behaviors but not on depression. However, emotional abuse had direct effects on depression and problematic behaviors, and indirect effects on both psychopathologies through expressive suppression and anger.Conclusions: Physical and emotional abuse had distinct effects and influencing mechanisms on adolescents' externalizing and internalizing problems. Compared with physical abuse, emotional abuse elicited more harms and subsequent psychopathologies.

Abstract:Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Ahead of Print. The formation of peer attachment is vitally important for the mental health of adolescents. Additionally, converging evidences show that childhood emotional trauma leads to poor peer attachment during adolescence. However, little is known about the underlying mechanism accounting for the link between early emotional trauma and adolescent peer attachment. Therefore, the present study is intended to examine the relationship between childhood psychological maltreatment (CPM) and peer attachment among Chinese adolescents and reveal its underlying mechanism. In total, we collected data from 670 adolescents (36.5% males and 63.5% females, Mage = 16.44 years, SD = 0.78) attending two Chinese high schools. These participants completed measurement scales for CPM (emotional abuse and neglect), peer attachment, and emotion regulation strategies, including cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES). The multiple mediation models showed that emotional neglect negatively predicted adolescent peer attachment but that emotional abuse did not. Furthermore, the two emotion regulation strategies, CR and ES, completely mediated the relationship between emotional abuse and peer attachment and partially mediated the relationship between emotional neglect and peer attachment. These findings extend the existing studies on adolescent peer attachment and elucidate how childhood emotional trauma negatively influences adolescent peer attachment. In addition, the present results provide implications for improving the peer attachment of adolescents. On one hand, appropriate family intervention should be implemented to reduce CPM. On the other hand, schools can focus on improving the peer attachment of adolescents by enhancing their emotion regulation. Specifically, adolescents should be taught how to use adaptive strategies, such as CR, to regulate negative emotions.

Abstract:Background Despite emerging evidence for the effect of childhood psychological maltreatment on adolescent depressive symptoms, the underlying processes for this effect are largely under-investigated. This study examined a conceptual framework for the effect of childhood psychological maltreatment on adolescent depressive symptoms through social anxiety disorder (SAD) and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. Methods The participants were 1649 Chinese middle school students (751 girls and 898 boys) with a mean age of 16.29 ± 1.04 years old. A moderation-mediation model hypothesized that childhood psychological maltreatment predicts adolescent depressive symptoms, with SAD as a mediator and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies as a moderator. Results Childhood psychological maltreatment significantly positively predicted adolescent depressive symptoms, while SAD mediated the relation. Maladaptive emotion regulation strategies moderated the pathways from psychological maltreatment to depressive symptoms (but not from psychological maltreatment to SAD) and from SAD to adolescent depressive symptoms. Limitations Subjective measures, and the cross-sectional design are the main limitations. Conclusions SAD plays a mediating role in the relation between childhood psychological maltreatment and depressive symptoms. Maladaptive emotion regulation strategies exacerbate the relation between childhood psychological maltreatment and depressive symptoms, as well as the relation between SAD and depressive symptoms. These results highlight the importance of addressing social anxiety in reducing adolescent depressive symptoms by improving their cognitive emotion regulation strategies.

Abstract:The relationship between childhood maltreatment and adolescent depression has been recognized; however the indirect mechanisms linking them remain understudied. This study aims to explore whether peer bullying and sleep disturbance mediate this process based on the theory of latent vulnerability. We measured childhood maltreatment, peer bullying victimization, sleep disturbance, and depressive symptoms of secondary students using self-report questionnaires in three schools in Anhui Province, China, in November 2020. After analyzing the characteristics of 5724 youths with an average age of 13.5 years, we found that depressive symptoms were common among secondary school students (53.0%), and peer bullying, as well as sleep disturbance, partially mediated the effect of depressive symptoms on childhood maltreatment. Targeted interventions such as identifying and preventing childhood maltreatment, conveying anti-bullying messages, and ensuring sufficient sleep will help protect adolescents from depression.

Abstract:Depression in adolescents is detrimental to their quality of life and wellbeing. Previous research has found that childhood psychological maltreatment (CPM) is positively associated with adolescents' depressive symptoms. However, little is known about the relationship between parental CPM and depressive symptoms in their offspring. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between parental CPM and offspring depressive symptoms, as well as the possible mediating variables in this relationship. The present study recruited 315 Chinese high school students (M age = 17.27, SD age = 0.80, 137 boys) and their parents to complete the Child Psychological Maltreatment Scale and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. The results revealed that parental CPM was related to both offspring psychological maltreatment and parental depressive symptoms. Furthermore, we found that the relationship between parental CPM and offspring depressive symptoms was mediated by parental depressive symptoms and offspring psychological maltreatment. These findings suggest that parents with a history of psychological maltreatment were related to increased adolescent depressive symptoms through the exposure of the next generation to CPM. These results have some implications for parents and adolescents in terms of intervention approaches to treat CPM and depressive symptoms, which could further promote health and wellbeing.

Effects of Maltreatment in the Home Setting on Emotional and Behavioural Problems in Adolescents: A Study from Zhejiang Province in China

Abstract:The aim of the study was to determine the effects of different types of maltreatment on adolescents' emotional/behavioural problems in Zhejiang Province, eastern China. Adolescents aged ten to 16 years in two urban and two rural schools were invited to complete a questionnaire survey, including experiences of maltreatment and emotional/behavioural problems. In total, 791 questionnaires were eligible for analysis. Preceding‐year prevalence was 5.6 per cent for minor physical maltreatment, 27.6 per cent for moderate physical maltreatment and 4.6 per cent for severe physical maltreatment, 47.5 per cent for emotional maltreatment and 8.2 per cent for non‐contact punishment. Witnessing domestic violence was reported by 49.4 per cent of the adolescents. Emotional maltreatment was consistently associated with a higher risk of emotional/behavioural problems (relative risk ratio (RRR) ranging from 1.85–2.36) after adjusting for other maltreatment exposures and socio‐economic factors. Severe physical maltreatment showed the strongest association with behavioural problems (RRR = 4.75 (95% confidence interval 1.74, 12.98), P = 0.002). Witnessing domestic violence alone was not associated with emotional/behavioural problems in adolescents. The effect size of emotional maltreatment was greater for girls, while physical maltreatment had greater effects among boys. There was a cumulative negative effect with an increasing number of maltreatment types. The results indicate an important need: to educate parents, to identify high‐risk children and to introduce a formal child protection system in China.‘The aim of the study was to determine the effects of different types of maltreatment on adolescents' emotional/behavioural problems in Zhejiang Province, eastern China’Key Practitioner Messages Emotional maltreatment was consistently and robustly associated with an increased risk of both emotional and behavioural problems after adjusting for other maltreatment exposures and socio‐economic factors. Abstract:BACKGROUND:Largely due to methodological problems in existing studies, issues concerning causal directions and confounding factors, such as the stability effect, remain to be clarified in the relations among aggression, peer relationships, and psychological adjustment. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine (a) reciprocal direct and indirect effects among aggression, peer relationships, and depression based on a full cross-lagged model with the stability effect controlled, and (b) moderating effects of initial status on the growth of the variables.METHOD:A sample of Chinese children (N = 1,162) participated in the study. Four waves of longitudinal panel data were collected from the participants in ages 9-12 years from multiple sources including peer assessments, teacher ratings, sociometric nominations, and self-reports.RESULTS:Aggression negatively contributed, in both direct and indirect manners, to later peer relationships, and positively contributed to depression in late childhood. Peer relationships had negative direct and indirect effects on later aggression and depression. In addition, the initial level of aggression moderated the growth pattern of peer relationships.CONCLUSIONS:Early social and behavioral problems have proximal as well as long-term cross-domain effects on individual development. Moreover, children's early behavioral characteristics may serve to facilitate the development of social competence and exacerbate the development of social problems. The study provided valuable information about how the important aspects of socioemotional functioning were associated with each other in Chinese children from a developmental perspective.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the association between childhood maltreatment, parent-child relationship quality with psychological symptoms and to explore the moderating role of parent-child relationship quality in the association between childhood maltreatment and psychological symptoms among adolescents. It also probed to the role of gender differences in this effect. A representative sample of 14,500 middle school students in China were asked to complete a standard questionnaire on the details of childhood maltreatment, parent-child relationship quality, and psychological symptoms. All data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0. The PROCESS program was used to analyze whether parent-child relationship quality moderated the link between childhood maltreatment and psychological symptoms. The analyses revealed significant correlations between childhood maltreatment, parent-child relationship quality, and psychological symptoms (p < .001). Specifically, paternal relationship quality moderated the association between childhood maltreatment and psychological symptoms in the total sample (B = -0.01, p < .05) and the subgroup of girls (B = -0.01, p < .05), while maternal relationship quality moderated only the association between childhood maltreatment and psychological symptoms in the subgroup of boys (B = -0.01, p < .05). As the findings indicate, priority should be given to the quality of parent-child relationship and gender-specific methods employed to effectively reduce the psychological symptoms of adolescents with a history of childhood maltreatment.
Vicious cycle of emotional maltreatment and bullying perpetration/victimization among early adolescents: Depressive symptoms as a mediator

Abstract:RATIONALE: Emotional maltreatment and bullying (including both bullying perpetration and bullying victimization) are two prevalent and highly related problems among children and adolescents worldwide. The adverse consequences of emotional maltreatment and bullying behoove researchers to identify their causal mechanisms.OBJECTIVE: We examined the reciprocal relations between emotional maltreatment and bullying perpetration/victimization and whether depressive symptoms functioned as mediator of the relations, after separating within-person effects from between-person effects.METHODS: A total of 4273 Chinese early adolescents (45.2% girls; M<sub>age</sub> = 9.90 years, SD = 0.73) participated in a five-wave longitudinal study with 6-month intervals.RESULTS: Results from random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling showed: (a) emotional maltreatment and bullying perpetration were bidirectionally related; (b) bullying victimization directly predicted emotional maltreatment, but not vice versa; (c) emotional maltreatment indirectly predicted bullying perpetration/victimization via depressive symptoms; and (d) bullying victimization indirectly predicted emotional maltreatment via depressive symptoms.CONCLUSIONS: These findings provided evidence for bidirectional spillover effects in the family and peer domains, demonstrating that early adolescents may become trapped in a vicious cycle of negative relationships, directly or indirectly, via their depressive symptoms. To prevent a downward spiral, findings suggested that bullying interventions need to address family and peer relationships as well as individual psychological well-being simultaneously to be most effective.

Bidirectional relationship between bullying victimization and functions of aggression in adolescents: The mediating effect of teacher justice

Abstract:Introduction: Bullying victimization and aggression are frequent phenomena among adolescents and have been linked to various mental health problems. Although the correlation between bullying victimization and aggression is well-documented, the direction between the two has been debated. Moreover, the underlying mechanism through which victimization influences aggression or vice versa has gained little attention. The current study used data across two-time points to address this gap and explore the reciprocal relationships between victimization and aggression. The mediating role of teacher justice and related gender differences were also examined. Methods: A total of 2462 Chinese adolescents (50.9% boys; Mage = 13.95 years, SD = 0.60) completed measures on two occasions in 1 year with 6-month assessment intervals. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the longitudinal relations among the variables. Results: Results found that bullying victimization significantly and positively predicted both reactive and proactive aggression over time among the total sample. Reactive aggression significantly positively predicted victimization, while proactive aggression negatively predicted victimization in boys. Furthermore, teacher justice mediated the relationships between victimization and both functions of aggression. Mediation was gender-specific, with a significant mediating effect on girls. Conclusions: The results reveal the violent cycle of bullying victimization and aggression and underscore the role of teacher justice in this process. These findings have important implications for targeted interventions.

Abstract:Although childhood maltreatment has been suggested to play an important role in developing Internet addiction among adolescents, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this association. The present study investigated (a) the mediating role of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy (MCERS) in the association between childhood maltreatment and Internet addiction, and (b) the moderating role of peer support in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and Internet addiction. A sample of 4163 Chinese adolescents (50.3 % females, M age = 14.25, SD = 1.53) were recruited. The moderated mediation model showed that MCERS mediated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and Internet addiction. Furthermore, the mediating process was moderated by peer support. Interestingly, peer support can protect adolescents from being affected by higher levels of MCERS while it displays limited protective effect when adolescents suffered from higher levels of childhood maltreatment. These findings indicate that reducing the MCERS and enhancing peer support can contribute to the alleviation of negative influences of childhood maltreatment on Internet addiction.

Abstract:A new phenolic glycoside, dryopteroside (1), was isolated from the rhizomes of Dryopteris crassirhizoma (Dryopteridaceae), together with five known compounds, 4beta-carboxymethyl-(-)-epicatechin (2), isobiflorin (3), biflorin (4), 1-beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy-3-methoxy-5-hydroxybenzene (5) and (+)-catechin-6-C-beta-D-glucopyranoside (6). The new compound was elucidated to be 1-butanoyl-3-C-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-5-methyl-phloroglucinyl-6-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1) by chemical and various spectroscopic analyses. The known compounds 2-6 were first reported from the genus Dryopteris.

Abstract:Psychological symptoms are common among adolescents in China, which are associated with various negative consequences. There has been a pressing need for additional research of factors responsible for the occurrence of psychological symptoms during this developmental period, among which childhood maltreatment, personal coping style, one's levels of social support, and self-esteem deserve our attention. The association between childhood maltreatment and psychological symptoms is evident; however, the possible mediating effect of the other three factors mentioned above remains unclear. Hence, the current study aims to investigate the possible mediating roles of social support, coping style, and self-esteem in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and the development of psychological symptoms among adolescents. An adolescent-based health survey was conducted between 2013 and 2014 in 15 schools in China. A total of 9,704 students (aged 11-19 years) were enrolled and measures on childhood maltreatment, social support, coping styles, self-esteem, and psychological symptoms were completed. It was found that childhood maltreatment was positively correlated with psychological symptoms and negative coping styles, and negatively correlated with social support, positive coping styles, and self-esteem (p < .001). Social support, coping styles, and self-esteem mediated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and psychological symptoms. The estimated effect of childhood maltreatment on the occurrence of psychological symptoms could be explained by the mediation of social support, positive coping styles, negative coping styles, and self-esteem, whose ratio of roles came to 13.8%, 7.5%, 20.9%, and 10.3%, respectively. These findings indicate a need to promote social support, self-esteem, and positive coping styles, and decrease the level of negative coping styles, to markedly reduce the impact of psychological symptoms of childhood maltreatment among adolescents.

Abstract:Two brothers with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus are presented. The importance of early recognition and treatment to reverse the consequential complications are underscored. The disorder has a sex-linked recessive transmission, where all male offspring of an affected mother show the extreme thirst characteristic of the disease; in whom hyposthenuria persisted despite arginine vasopressin infusion, and in whom the serum arginine vasopressin concentrations correlate with the serum osmolality which serves to discriminate nephrogenic diabetes insipidus from the pituitary diabetes insipidus. The radiological features of "non-obstructive" hydronephrosis and hydroureters, the combined use of hydrochlorothiazide and the potassium-sparing diuretic amiloride in comparison to the prostaglandin inhibitor are discussed.
