Abstract:Flashing flow plays a crucial role in the occurrence of steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) accidents in advanced nuclear reactors. In this study, a simplified nonequilibrium phase change model is developed by modifying the Lee model. The modified model expands the scope of Lee model, allowing it to simulate phase change scenarios in response to abrupt pressure changes. Through adjustments to the phase change frequencies, the modified model accurately predicts the void fraction and pressure at various spatial locations, thus agreeing with publicly available experimental data on flashing flows in converging - diverging nozzles. In addition, extensive investigations demonstrate that the proposed model is applicable to a wide range of flashing flow scenarios. It is found that a higher evaporation frequency results in an overestimation of the void fraction in the divergent section of the nozzle, whereas too low evaporation frequency leads to an overestimation of the pressure undershoot magnitude. Moreover, the inlet and outlet pressures of the nozzle can potentially affect the determination of the condensation frequency. Based on the majority of cases examined in this study, recommended values for the evaporation frequency and condensation frequency are 20 s -1 and 0.1 s - 1 , respectively. This study helps to analysis the early phenomena of SGTR accidents in nuclear reactors.
