Abstract:A series of Mg-RE composites were fabricated through the sintering process involving a Mg-Gd-Zn-Zr alloy and externally introduced TC4 particle powder, follow-up subsequent hot extrusion. The addition of TC4 manifested a discernible influence on the weakening of the texture and refinement of the grain size. The TC4/GZ151K composite evinced an excellent mechanical property with 305 MPa, 361 MPa, and 10.5% for yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation. Microstructural characterization shows that the activation of {10-12} twinning has been restrained in TC4/GZ151K composite undergoing tension, leading to a later strain-hardening rate and higher yield strength. The prominent yield plateau and the extended work-hardening stage of the TC4/GZ151K composite can be attributed to dislocation multiplication, e.g., basal slip and prismatic slip, and the interaction between the mobile dislocations and the TC4 reinforcements. The misorientation distribution analysis demonstrated that deformable Ti metal particles exhibit co-deformation with the matrix, positively influencing the plasticity of the composite. This study extended the feasibility of fabricating Mg-RE composites reinforced with deformable metal particles, providing a deeper exploration for achieving the strength-ductility trade-off for Mg composites.
