Abstract:The advancement of big data driven recommendations reinforces information cocoons, where people only access information that conforms to their existing views or interests. However, little is known about how information cocoons are formed in short video applications. In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 users of short video apps such about their viewing experiences. We used thematic analysis to identify the main themes and patterns in their responses. The results suggest that 1) users form information cocoons purposefully, but they sometime take an explicit effort to escape information cocoons for diversity and serendipity purposes. 2) users use various strategies to escape the information cocoons, such as following or unfollowing certain accounts, interacting with algorithms, and exploring different hashtags or categories; 3) the phases of information cocoons vary from topic to topic, including exploratory information seeking, information filtering, opinion consolidation, and continuous self-verification. We discuss the implications of our findings for short video application design, information literacy education, and future research.
