Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is considered as a promising alternative fuel due to its zero-carbon content. Impacts of various NH3 additions on soot nanostructure and reactivity during 1-butene pyrolysis are investigated from low to high temperatures in this work. Soot morphology and nanostructure are characterized by (high-resolution) transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Thermogravimetric analysis is adopted to evaluate soot reactivity, as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and elemental analysis to explore the chemical composition of soot. Results show the soot nanostructure is highly correlated with its reactivity, but they do not vary monotonically with NH3 blending. Soot particle size, fringe length and graphitization degree are ranked as 0%NH3 > 50%NH3 > 30%NH3 for various NH3 additions, while fringe tortuosity, oxidation reactivity and H/C ratio vary in the opposite order. The maturity of soot improves significantly with an increase in pyrolysis temperature. However, the impact of doping ammonia on the soot nanostructure gradually weakens, indicating that young soot is more sensitive to ammonia.
