Abstract:This paper presents a pilot study on the characterization of the physical and mechanical properties of a novel green concrete with two different substituted recycled plastic aggregates. A reference mix with an average compressive strength of around 60 MPa is considered. Recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) powder and recycled mixed plastic [polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE)] granules were adopted to substitute fine and coarse aggregates. Two different substitution strategies were employed. In the first one, the PET powder is used to substitute the fine sand by volume. In the second one, the PET powder is used to substitute the fine sand while the recycled mixed plastic granules are used to substitute the coarse sand and fine coarse aggregates by volume (50% for PET powder and 50% for recycled mixed plastic granules). Four total replacement levels (5%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) by volume were considered. The fresh concrete properties (slump and density), compressive and flexural behavior, toughness, and permeability are investigated. Finally, a microscale characterization of the plastic-paste interface is provided. An interpretation of the test results of this study by comparing them with the findings of previous studies is provided, along with the provision of two predictive equations for the compressive and flexural strength reduction factors. Results show reduced flowability for PET cases due to particle shape, slight compressive strength reduction at low substitutions, improved flexural strength at low levels, decreased permeability, and microscale enhancements. The comprehensive evaluation indicates promising physical and mechanical performance of the novel green concrete.

Abstract:The current industrial revolution emphasized the necessity to use environmentally friendlier sources and strategies to meet the bio-based economy challenges of the modern world. Owing to the finiteness, human health and environmental impacts of fossil resources, current research efforts are switched to search and develop renewable, sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives of commercial plasticizers to meet the green agenda to establish a green society. The substitution of petroleum-based plasticizers with bioplasticizers offers noteworthy advantages, such as recyclability, biodegradability, high lubricant power, low diffusion coefficients in the polymeric matrix and very low volatility. Moreover, bioplasticizers provide the most suitable platform due to their global availability and industrially-relevant applications. Numerous parameters such as solubility, polarity, and structural compatibility are considered important and can influence the designing of efficient plasticizers. In this context, a plethora of research has given their structural attributes along with their compatibility with different elastomers and plastics. Herein, the valorization of bioplasticizers in several industrial and biotechnological processes is presented with suitable examples. Additionally, it highlights the insight of selection criteria and generalities concerning plasticization theories. A brief discussion is also given on the mechanism of plasticization and modifications, which are being made in the current industrial practices. The description extends towards the design of effective plasticizers with their dependence on structure and how we can improve their performance to the polymer industry.

Abstract:Synthesis and properties of benzene polyacid ester. Using benzene‐1,3,5‐tricarboxylic acid, trimellitic anhydride, 2‐propylheptanol and 2‐ethylhexanol as raw materials, four kinds of environmental plasticizers were prepared, which were used as additives for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. Compared with commercially available di (2‐ethylhexyl) phthalate (DOP), di (2‐ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DOTP), and tributyl citrate (TBC), the application performance and plasticizing performance were compared. The structure of the target product was analyzed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to verify the fingerprint region of the molecular structure of the product. The properties of plasticized PVC films were tested by thermal weight loss analysis, oven thermal aging test, migration and volatility resistance test, DMA analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The plasticizing mechanism was confirmed through quantum chemical calculations, and the results of the calculations were in line with the migration outcomes. The results showed that compared with commercially available plasticizers, benzene polyacid ester plasticizers had better thermal stability, and better cold resistance in the polar environments, suitable for high‐temperature and water‐based environments. Highlights The four plasticizers prepared in this study were compared with reference plasticizers, and the plasticizing mechanism was validated through quantum chemical calculations. The PVC film plasticized with benzene polyacid ester prepared in this study demonstrates outstanding thermal stability, surpassing certain plasticizers reported in current literature. Benzene polyacid esters plasticized PVC film has migration stability under various conditions, it has great potential in packaging and other applications.

Abstract:Most of the plasticizers used during poly (vinyl chloride) processing are typically toxic petroleum-based phthalates. Furthermore, large amount of edible oils become waste all over the world, fortunately, waste cooking oils have the potential to be an economic alternative for synthesizing different biomaterials. This study aimed to synthesis an improved properties and cost competitiveness cleaner bio-plasticizer using waste cooking oil methyl esters as staring raw materials. In this paper, waste cooking oil methyl esters were structurally modified i.e., transesterification and epoxidation reaction, to prepare epoxide waste cooking oil 2-ethylhexyl esters. The in-situ epoxidation was mainly studied by response surface methodology, with optimum conditions: reaction time was 7 h, molar ratio of C=C bonds/FA/H2O2 was 1.00/0.35/2.41, and reaction temperature was 65.84 degrees C with a maximum relative percentage conversion to oxirane of 92%. Also, the plasticizing effectiveness of epoxide waste cooking oil 2-ethylhexyl esters to substitute toxic plasticizer dioctyl phthalate were studied. Results showed that the mechanical and thermal performance of PVC samples was significantly improved with partial substitutions, while the migration resistance was slightly decreased. Comparison with conventional epoxy compound highlighted that epoxide waste cooking oil 2-ethylhexyl esters had superior low temperature property, oxidation stability, and remarkably reduced the glass transition temperature of PVC. In conclusion, the prepared epoxide via structural modification from waste cooking oil methyl esters proved to be an effective alternative to dioctyl phthalate, replacing about 40% of the total plasticizer. This may lead to the eco-development of waste cooking oil materials, and makes the plasticizing process more environmentally friendly. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Plasticizers are additives that are used to impart flexibility to polymer blends and improve their processability. Plasticizers are typically not covalently bound to the polymers, allowing them to leach out over time, which results in human exposure and environmental contamination. Phthalates, in particular, have been the subject of increasing concern due to their established ubiquity in the environment and their suspected negative health effects, including endocrine disrupting and anti-androgenic effects. As there is mounting pressure to find safe replacement compounds, this review addresses the design and experimental elements that should be considered in order for a new or existing plasticizer to be considered green. Specifically, a multi-disciplinary and holistic approach should be taken which includes toxicity testing (both in vitro and in vivo), biodegradation testing (with attention to metabolites), as well as leaching studies. Special consideration should also be given to the design stages of producing a new molecule and the synthetic and scale-up processes should also be optimized. Only by taking a multi-faceted approach can a plasticizer be considered truly green.

Abstract:The increasing environmental burden generated by disposable plastic wastes makes the development of sustainable substitute materials an emergent task. As one of the most abundant bioresources, chitosan (CS) has been considered as a potential candidate for plastic substitution. Conventionally, CS-based materials are fabricated through a solution-processing procedure due to the high crystallinity of CS. Herein, we designed a CS-based material via integrating CS into the network of polyimine (PI), which shows thermomechanical processability similar to plastics. Strong interactions were achieved through dynamic imine bond and hydrogen bond and thus formed a thermo-processable dynamic composite network. These CS-based plastic substitutes exhibit exceptional mechanical performances, excellent thermal/chemical stability, and a series of self-adaptiveness, including re-healing, reprocessing and multi-layer laminating. Notably, CPs can be easily degraded and 100% recycled for the production of next-generation materials. This work provides an alternative route to produce green and sustainable biomass materials as a plastic substitute.

Abstract:In this article, di(2-ethylhexyl)-1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylate (DEHCH) was synthesized via esterification between hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) and iso-octanol by using concentrated sulfuric acid as a catalyst. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds after addition of the synthesized plasticizer DEHCH presented similar plasticizing performance with diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), di(isononyl)-1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylate (DINCH), Trioctyl trimellitate,1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid tris(2-ethylhexyl) ester (TOTM) and Acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC). As demonstrated by comparisons of the results of mechanical properties, transparency, and volatilization and migration tests obtained for plasticized PVC compounds. We also investigate a variety of plasticizer composite plasticizing performance of the product, blending of DEHCH and TOTM and blending of DEHCH with ATBC to plasticizing the PVC. DEHCH can also be considered as an alternative plasticizer for DEHP.

Abstract:China government has implemented regulations to completely ban the use of disposable plastics with about 54 million kt, resulting in tremendous controversies about non-degradable and biodegradable plastics. However, there is still a lack of direct evidence to elucidate the difference of degradation mechanisms among them, which limits the development of applications for biodegradable materials. In this work, we provide direct evidence to clarify the degradation mechanisms between bio- and non-degradable materials. Cellulose, polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), and polyethylene (PE) film were subjected to phosphate-buffered solution (PBS) degradation, ultraviolet (UV) aging, and soil degradation, and the possible degradation mechanism analysis was carried out. The results exhibited that the cellulose film possessed the shortest degradation cycles whether in PBS degradation, UV aging, or soil degradation, moreover, the cellulose film showed a much higher weight loss of 99.1% after 98 days of soil degradation compared with PBAT film (2.1%) and PE film (1.7%). Additionally, we proposed possible degradation mechanisms to pave the way for the fabrication of green and degradable packaging plastics.

Abstract:Thermoplastic elastomer styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS) has excellent mechanical properties and aging resistance, so it has good application prospects in thermoplastic solid propellants. The selection of plasticizer is one of the keys to the formulation design of thermoplastic solid propellant. The compatibility of the plasticizer with the polymer determines the plasticizer's ability to plasticize the polymer's molecular chain segments. Herein, the compatibility of four plasticizers with SEBS was investigated, and the results declared that the order of compatibility between SEBS and the four plasticizers is SEBS/WO > SEBS/DOS > SEBS/DEP > SEBS/TA.

Plastic wastes not only disrupt ecosystems and biodiversity, but they also threaten human life and health. Countries around the world have enacted regulations in recent years to limit the use of plastics. Paper products have been proposed as promising substitutes for plastics, which undoubtedly brings unprecedented opportunities to the pulp and paper industry. However, paper products have some deficiencies in replacing certain plastic products. Research and development to improve paper properties and reduce production costs is needed to meet such challenges.

Abstract:Environmental and toxicity concerns dictate replacement of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) plasticizer used to impart flexibility and thermal stability to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Potential alternatives to DEHP in PVC include diheptyl succinate (DHS), diethyl adipate (DEA), 1,4-butanediol dibenzoate (1,4-BDB), and dibutyl sebacate (DBS). To examine whether that these bio-based plasticizers can compete with DEHP, we need to compare their tensile, mechanical, and diffusional properties. This work focuses on predicting the effect these plasticizers have on Tg, Young's modulus, shear modulus, fractional free volume, and diffusion for PVC-plasticizer systems. Where data was available, the results from this study are in good agreement with the experiment; we conclude that DBS and DHS are most promising green plasticizers for PVC, since they have properties comparable to DEHP but not the environmental and toxicity concerns.

Abstract:The use of plasticizers is crucial in enhancing the flexibility of engineering plastics. Currently, the primary plasticizers employed in poly(vinyl chloride) materials are nonrenewable phthalates. These exhibit a detrimental impact on the environment and human health owing to their toxic benzene ring structure. Consequently, the development of easily synthesizable, green plasticizers with excellent properties using biobased resources has been a long-standing objective in the field of resin plasticizing. Herein, we synthesized a branched lactic acid ester (BLAE) plasticizer using esterification and acid anhydride end-capping methods. Further, we investigated its application performance and oral toxicity. The abundance of polar ester groups in the oligolactic acid structure enables them to form secondary bonds with polymer chains. This results in a glass transition temperature is 59% less than that of pure poly(vinyl chloride), thereby improving the mechanical properties of the material. The addition of the BLAE plasticizer not only improved the thermal stability of the compound film but also effectively reduced the self-catalytic dehydrochlorination reaction of poly(vinyl chloride). This overcomes the limitations of unmodified poly(vinyl chloride), such as performance deterioration and color variation due to light exposure. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of the compound film was substantially enhanced, resulting in outstanding antifouling and self-cleaning properties. These findings suggest that lactic acid-based plasticizer exhibits comparable or even superior overall performance when compared to commercially available plasticizers such as dioctyl phthalate and acetyl tributyl citrate. This work not only addresses the gap in the toxicity assessment of lactic acid plasticizers but also demonstrates their nontoxic characteristics in acute oral toxicity tests. This research offers novel insights into the green synthesis and functional development of biobased plasticizers, showcasing considerable potential for the substituting of dioctyl phthalate.

Abstract:One possible solution against the accumulation of petrochemical plastics in natural environments is to develop biodegradable plastic substitutes using natural components. However, discovering all-natural alternatives that meet specific properties, such as optical transparency, fire retardancy and mechanical resilience, which have made petrochemical plastics successful, remains challenging. Current approaches still rely on iterative optimization experiments. Here we show an integrated workflow that combines robotics and machine learning to accelerate the discovery of all-natural plastic substitutes with programmable optical, thermal and mechanical properties. First, an automated pipetting robot is commanded to prepare 286 nanocomposite films with various properties to train a support-vector machine classifier. Next, through 14 active learning loops with data augmentation, 135 all-natural nanocomposites are fabricated stagewise, establishing an artificial neural network prediction model. We demonstrate that the prediction model can conduct a two-way design task: (1) predicting the physicochemical properties of an all-natural nanocomposite from its composition and (2) automating the inverse design of biodegradable plastic substitutes that fulfils various user-specific requirements. By harnessing the model's prediction capabilities, we prepare several all-natural substitutes, that could replace non-biodegradable counterparts as exhibiting analogous properties. Our methodology integrates robot-assisted experiments, machine intelligence and simulation tools to accelerate the discovery and design of eco-friendly plastic substitutes starting from building blocks taken from the generally-recognized-as-safe database.

Abstract:In recent years, with the increasingly serious environmental pollution, the achievement of a truly circular materials economy approach to sustainability has attracted the attention of scientists. In this paper, we proposed an approach that combined the chemical recycling of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) plastic with the synthesis of a green plasticizer to promote the development of plastics' reutilization. An efficient alcoholysis strategy was employed to achieve the precise chain scission of PCL into short-chain PCL (sc-PCL), which was subsequently blended with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The excellent compatibility of PVC/sc-PCL blend was characterized through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and solubility parameters. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) confirmed that the thermostability and plasticity of the plasticized PVC samples were superior to those of most commercial plasticizers' plasticized samples. Meanwhile, the exceptional extraction and migration resistance of PVC/sc-PCL implied that sc-PCL was capable to modify PVC as an ideal plasticizer. The flexible macromolecular structure of sc-PCL and the high percentage of polar ester groups made sc-PCL closely entangled with PVC, thus exhibiting excellent plasticizing properties. This trash into treasure strategy was also applicable to commercial PCL products, which will open up a new direction for chemical recycling of plastics as well as design and synthesis of green plasticizers.

Efficacy coefficient method assisted quadruple-activities 3D-QSAR pharmacophore model for application in environmentally friendly PAE molecular modification

Abstract:Phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are among the most widely used plasticizers in plastic products. They are easily diffused from plastic during use and seriously affect the environment and human health. Therefore, designing environmentally friendly PAE derivatives has important practical applications. In this paper, the environmentally friendly molecular modification of PAEs was carried out according to a comprehensive structural evaluation based on a three-dimensional quantitative structure–activity relationship (3D-QSAR) pharmacophore model of four activity modes. First, the efficacy coefficient method was used to process the mobility, toxicity, degradation and bioconcentration data of the PAEs to calculate comprehensive evaluation values. The PAE 3D-QSAR pharmacophore complex model was constructed based on the PAE four-activity comprehensive evaluation value (a comprehensive value representing the mobility, toxicity, degradation and bioconcentration of the PAEs), and a total of 4 PAE derivatives with reduced comprehensive evaluation values were obtained. Functional evaluation of the derivatives showed that the five PAEs with lower comprehensive evaluation values were stable in the environment, while the insulating properties of the derivative molecules were less affected. Following the four-activity pharmacophore model (Hypo 1) of the target molecules, dimethyl phthalate (DMP) and di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP), comprehensive evaluation models and their mobility, toxicity, degradation and bioconcentration single-activity models, the substitution sites selected by the comprehensive evaluation model were demonstrated to be highly representative. By constructing a two-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (2D-QSAR) model of the comprehensive evaluation values of the PAEs and the four single-effect 2D-QSAR models of their derivatives, the different effects of the five key parameters on the comprehensive evaluation values, toxicity, degradation, mobility and bioconcentration of molecules were analysed.

Abstract:New methods of catalytic synthesis of novel plasticizer, catalytic reaction process, catalyst type and preparation were summarized. Properties of major domestic and overseas new environmental protection plasticizers, applications and the research status were especially focused on, including the synthesis and properties of biological-base vegetable oil plasticizer, polyester plasticizer, citric acid ester plasticizer, trioctyl trimellitate plasticizer and dioctyl terephthalate plasticizer. At the meantime, compared with the traditional synthesis method and catalyst, the trend of catalytic synthesis of plasticizer and the application direction of plasticizers in national high-tech fields were pointed out. Put forward the plasticizer industry and new materials additive field in our country development should focus on the adjustment of product structure, accelerate the exoloitation of non adjacent benzene structure, r~lant oil base nlastieizer_

Abstract:Poly(1,2-propylene glycol adipate) (PPA) was used as an environmentally friendly plasticizer in flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of the PVC/PPA blends were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile test, scanning electron microscopy and small amplitude oscillatory shear rheometry. The results showed that PPA lowered the glass transition temperature of PVC. The introduction of PPA could decrease tensile strength and Young's modulus of the PVC/PPA blends; however, elongation-at-break was dramatically increased due to the plastic deformation. The plasticization effect of PPA was also manifested by the decrease of dynamic storage modulus and viscosity in the melt state of the blends. The results indicated that PPA had a good plasticizing effect on PVC.

Abstract:The increasing global demand for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based plasticizers, particularly in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) products, has intensified the exploration of bio-based options derived from renewable resources such as plant oils. Traditional bio-based plasticizers, while promising, often suffer from limitations such as low molecular weight, high volatility, and poor compatibility with PVC, thereby restricting their practical applications. To surmount this hurdle, we introduce a novel synthetic route combining the Passerini reaction with the thiol-ene click reaction, aimed at producing high-performance plant oil-based plasticizers (POPs) with enhanced ester content and molecular weight. This method offers significant advantages over traditional methods, including low reaction temperatures (≤40 °C), ultrahigh yield (95 %) when using ethanol as the solvent, and precise control over ester content. Furthermore, the key findings demonstrate that the designed and synthesized POP (bio-content, 69 %) produced using this method exhibits outstanding overall performance, such as excellent migration resistance, good compatibility with PVC, and high thermal stability compared to traditional plasticizers. This facile, green, and efficient method may significantly advance the adoption of bio-based plasticizers, establishing them as a viable alternative to petroleum-based counterparts.
