Abstract:New methods of catalytic synthesis of novel plasticizer, catalytic reaction process, catalyst type and preparation were summarized. Properties of major domestic and overseas new environmental protection plasticizers, applications and the research status were especially focused on, including the synthesis and properties of biological-base vegetable oil plasticizer, polyester plasticizer, citric acid ester plasticizer, trioctyl trimellitate plasticizer and dioctyl terephthalate plasticizer. At the meantime, compared with the traditional synthesis method and catalyst, the trend of catalytic synthesis of plasticizer and the application direction of plasticizers in national high-tech fields were pointed out. Put forward the plasticizer industry and new materials additive field in our country development should focus on the adjustment of product structure, accelerate the exoloitation of non adjacent benzene structure, r~lant oil base nlastieizer_

Abstract:Through the formulation optimization and the performance evaluation,the five kinds of treating agents with good environmental protection performance were optimized,and the environmental protection drilling fluid which can meet the requirements of drilling has been obtained.The experimental study indicated that the environmental protection drilling fluid has the good anti-temperature ability,anti-salty calcium pollution capacity,inhibition dispersion ability,and it can reduce the harm of drilling fluid to the formation because it has better biological toxicity and biological degradability.Through 6 well's field application in the Quang'an area,the results showed that the performances of environmental protection drilling fluid were very good and field application was convenient.It could satisfy the drilling requirements of all kinds of wells in the Quangan area.It is worth popularizing the applying further.
Structural Modification of Waste Cooking Oil Methyl Esters As Cleaner Plasticizer to Substitute Toxic Dioctyl Phthalate

Abstract:Most of the plasticizers used during poly (vinyl chloride) processing are typically toxic petroleum-based phthalates. Furthermore, large amount of edible oils become waste all over the world, fortunately, waste cooking oils have the potential to be an economic alternative for synthesizing different biomaterials. This study aimed to synthesis an improved properties and cost competitiveness cleaner bio-plasticizer using waste cooking oil methyl esters as staring raw materials. In this paper, waste cooking oil methyl esters were structurally modified i.e., transesterification and epoxidation reaction, to prepare epoxide waste cooking oil 2-ethylhexyl esters. The in-situ epoxidation was mainly studied by response surface methodology, with optimum conditions: reaction time was 7 h, molar ratio of C=C bonds/FA/H2O2 was 1.00/0.35/2.41, and reaction temperature was 65.84 degrees C with a maximum relative percentage conversion to oxirane of 92%. Also, the plasticizing effectiveness of epoxide waste cooking oil 2-ethylhexyl esters to substitute toxic plasticizer dioctyl phthalate were studied. Results showed that the mechanical and thermal performance of PVC samples was significantly improved with partial substitutions, while the migration resistance was slightly decreased. Comparison with conventional epoxy compound highlighted that epoxide waste cooking oil 2-ethylhexyl esters had superior low temperature property, oxidation stability, and remarkably reduced the glass transition temperature of PVC. In conclusion, the prepared epoxide via structural modification from waste cooking oil methyl esters proved to be an effective alternative to dioctyl phthalate, replacing about 40% of the total plasticizer. This may lead to the eco-development of waste cooking oil materials, and makes the plasticizing process more environmentally friendly. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this article, di(2-ethylhexyl)-1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylate (DEHCH) was synthesized via esterification between hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) and iso-octanol by using concentrated sulfuric acid as a catalyst. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds after addition of the synthesized plasticizer DEHCH presented similar plasticizing performance with diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), di(isononyl)-1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylate (DINCH), Trioctyl trimellitate,1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid tris(2-ethylhexyl) ester (TOTM) and Acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC). As demonstrated by comparisons of the results of mechanical properties, transparency, and volatilization and migration tests obtained for plasticized PVC compounds. We also investigate a variety of plasticizer composite plasticizing performance of the product, blending of DEHCH and TOTM and blending of DEHCH with ATBC to plasticizing the PVC. DEHCH can also be considered as an alternative plasticizer for DEHP.

Abstract:Synthesis and properties of benzene polyacid ester. Using benzene‐1,3,5‐tricarboxylic acid, trimellitic anhydride, 2‐propylheptanol and 2‐ethylhexanol as raw materials, four kinds of environmental plasticizers were prepared, which were used as additives for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. Compared with commercially available di (2‐ethylhexyl) phthalate (DOP), di (2‐ethylhexyl) terephthalate (DOTP), and tributyl citrate (TBC), the application performance and plasticizing performance were compared. The structure of the target product was analyzed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to verify the fingerprint region of the molecular structure of the product. The properties of plasticized PVC films were tested by thermal weight loss analysis, oven thermal aging test, migration and volatility resistance test, DMA analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The plasticizing mechanism was confirmed through quantum chemical calculations, and the results of the calculations were in line with the migration outcomes. The results showed that compared with commercially available plasticizers, benzene polyacid ester plasticizers had better thermal stability, and better cold resistance in the polar environments, suitable for high‐temperature and water‐based environments. Highlights The four plasticizers prepared in this study were compared with reference plasticizers, and the plasticizing mechanism was validated through quantum chemical calculations. The PVC film plasticized with benzene polyacid ester prepared in this study demonstrates outstanding thermal stability, surpassing certain plasticizers reported in current literature. Benzene polyacid esters plasticized PVC film has migration stability under various conditions, it has great potential in packaging and other applications.

Abstract:Plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been widely used in the world. Petroleum-based plasticizers especially phthalates have been the most common plasticizers used in PVC. However, the global petroleum resources are becoming scarce gradually, and the hygienic requirements for plasticizers are increasing. Owing to the negative impact of petroleum-based plasticizers on human health and the environment, their use has been restricted in the USA, the European and so on. Biomass renewable resources have wide range of sources and low prices, and the chemicals obtained from them have various structures, which can provide a huge platform to design novel PVC plasticizers with the aim of replacing traditional phthalate plasticizers. Many bio-based PVC plasticizers, such as vegetable oil-based plasticizers, cardanol-based plasticizers, lactic acid-based plasticizers, waste cooking oil-based plasticizers, polyester plasticizers, hyperbranched plasticizers and so on, have been extensively studied. We have reviewed recent research progress on different types of novel bio-based PVC plasticizers and assorted them by raw materials and chemical structure. Through in-depth analysis of the relationship between the chemical structure and the plasticizing performance, the efficiency of plasticizers may be predicted before they have been designed. This review will be beneficial for the development of bio-based plasticizers by pointing out the research and application direction.Graphical abstract

Abstract:1,2-Cyclohexanedicarboxylates (e.g., di(isononyl) 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylate, DINCH) are widely used as safe plasticizers in the polyvinylchloride (PVC) industry, and they are industrially manufactured from petroleum-derived o-xylene. To reduce the reliance on the limited fossil resources, we herein develop a sustainable alternative to 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylates with bio-based fumarates and 1,3-dienes. The Diels-Alder (D-A) cycloaddition and subsequent Pd/C-catalyzed hydrogenation are combined into a one-pot fashion, and notably they can take place efficiently under solvent-free conditions (>98% yield). The 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylates obtained in this work have similar physical properties to DINCH and do not show evidence of toxicity (LD50 > 5 g/kg), which make them suitable candidates as safe plasticizers.

Abstract:With the rapid consumption of fossil resources,the global energy crisis has caused serious concern. In the utilization of plant resources,the exploitation of downstream products,during which castor oil used as raw materials,has become to be a hot research area. The preparation methods, performance as well as the application fields of castor oil-based downstream products were introduced in this work. The preparation and properties of some castor oil-based downstream products,such as dehydrated castor oil,transesterification of castor oil,exploitation of castor oil,polyurethane of castor oil and so on,were reviewed. The types and application areas of castor oil-based plasticizers were sketched and the preparation methods and the properties of epoxidized methyl acetorieinoleate were analyzed. The problems of the effects of the reaction temperature and the dosage of catalyst on the stability of epoxy group in the production process of the castor oil-based plasticizer were discussed,and the developing trends in the field of castor oil-based plasticizers were proposed.

Abstract:1,2-Cyclohexanedicarboxylates, which are one of the most commonly used plasticizers in the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) industry, are generally prepared via the oxidation/esterification/hydrogenation of o-xylene (or naphthalene). Herein, we develop an alternative route toward cyclohexane-based plasticizers using diacetone alcohol and fumarates as the starting materials. The process includes a mild Raney Ni-catalyzed hydrogenation of diacetone alcohol, an one-step dehydration/Diels-Alder reaction of resulting 2-methyl-2,4-pentandiol and fumarates in a choline chloride (ChCl) based deep eutectic solvent (DES), and a further Pd/C-catalyzed hydrogenation. The toxicological tests indicate that the as-synthesized di(2-ethylhexyl) 3,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate can serve as a safe plasticizer for PVC materials.

Abstract:The current industrial revolution emphasized the necessity to use environmentally friendlier sources and strategies to meet the bio-based economy challenges of the modern world. Owing to the finiteness, human health and environmental impacts of fossil resources, current research efforts are switched to search and develop renewable, sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives of commercial plasticizers to meet the green agenda to establish a green society. The substitution of petroleum-based plasticizers with bioplasticizers offers noteworthy advantages, such as recyclability, biodegradability, high lubricant power, low diffusion coefficients in the polymeric matrix and very low volatility. Moreover, bioplasticizers provide the most suitable platform due to their global availability and industrially-relevant applications. Numerous parameters such as solubility, polarity, and structural compatibility are considered important and can influence the designing of efficient plasticizers. In this context, a plethora of research has given their structural attributes along with their compatibility with different elastomers and plastics. Herein, the valorization of bioplasticizers in several industrial and biotechnological processes is presented with suitable examples. Additionally, it highlights the insight of selection criteria and generalities concerning plasticization theories. A brief discussion is also given on the mechanism of plasticization and modifications, which are being made in the current industrial practices. The description extends towards the design of effective plasticizers with their dependence on structure and how we can improve their performance to the polymer industry.

Abstract:The use of plasticizers is crucial in enhancing the flexibility of engineering plastics. Currently, the primary plasticizers employed in poly(vinyl chloride) materials are nonrenewable phthalates. These exhibit a detrimental impact on the environment and human health owing to their toxic benzene ring structure. Consequently, the development of easily synthesizable, green plasticizers with excellent properties using biobased resources has been a long-standing objective in the field of resin plasticizing. Herein, we synthesized a branched lactic acid ester (BLAE) plasticizer using esterification and acid anhydride end-capping methods. Further, we investigated its application performance and oral toxicity. The abundance of polar ester groups in the oligolactic acid structure enables them to form secondary bonds with polymer chains. This results in a glass transition temperature is 59% less than that of pure poly(vinyl chloride), thereby improving the mechanical properties of the material. The addition of the BLAE plasticizer not only improved the thermal stability of the compound film but also effectively reduced the self-catalytic dehydrochlorination reaction of poly(vinyl chloride). This overcomes the limitations of unmodified poly(vinyl chloride), such as performance deterioration and color variation due to light exposure. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of the compound film was substantially enhanced, resulting in outstanding antifouling and self-cleaning properties. These findings suggest that lactic acid-based plasticizer exhibits comparable or even superior overall performance when compared to commercially available plasticizers such as dioctyl phthalate and acetyl tributyl citrate. This work not only addresses the gap in the toxicity assessment of lactic acid plasticizers but also demonstrates their nontoxic characteristics in acute oral toxicity tests. This research offers novel insights into the green synthesis and functional development of biobased plasticizers, showcasing considerable potential for the substituting of dioctyl phthalate.

Abstract:Dioctyl phthalate (DEHP), as the most used commercial plasticizer, has been restricted in many polymer products due to its reproductive toxicity to human body. In this study, castor oil based polyol ester(CPE) was synthesized via a simple and efficient way and used as a sustainable plasticizer in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) films to replace toxic DEHP. The chemical structure of the obtained bio-based plasticizer was characterized. The oral toxicity test indicated that CPE had toxic doses of over 3000 mg/kg. Tg of PVC films decreased from 87.4 to 19.1 °C, which is lower than PVC-DEHP systems. The tensile strength and elongation at break of PVC films plasticized with 50 phr CPE is 12.10 MPa and 450.15% respectively, which shows more flexible than PVC/50 prh DEHP samples.The DMA and tensile tests results indicated that the plasctizing effect of CPE was more excellent than DEHP. DEHP can be completely replaced with CPE in flexible PVC products.

Abstract:In recent years,due to growing environmental concerns, the higher requirements had been proposed for the utilization of lubricants.That is to say,in addition to the conventional function,the lubricants would possess less toxicity and better biodegradability.Some researches demonstrated that plant oils,synthetic esters and some low viscosity poly-alpha olefins etc could fulfill the criteria when proper selection was conducted.In this work,the definition of environmental benign lubricant and its development and utilization status are described briefly.And the two aspects of the environmental benign lubricants,base oil and additive were summarized.In conclusion,the environmental benign lubricants should be the trend of development for the lubricants in the future.

Abstract:Plasticizers are additives that are used to impart flexibility to polymer blends and improve their processability. Plasticizers are typically not covalently bound to the polymers, allowing them to leach out over time, which results in human exposure and environmental contamination. Phthalates, in particular, have been the subject of increasing concern due to their established ubiquity in the environment and their suspected negative health effects, including endocrine disrupting and anti-androgenic effects. As there is mounting pressure to find safe replacement compounds, this review addresses the design and experimental elements that should be considered in order for a new or existing plasticizer to be considered green. Specifically, a multi-disciplinary and holistic approach should be taken which includes toxicity testing (both in vitro and in vivo), biodegradation testing (with attention to metabolites), as well as leaching studies. Special consideration should also be given to the design stages of producing a new molecule and the synthetic and scale-up processes should also be optimized. Only by taking a multi-faceted approach can a plasticizer be considered truly green.

Abstract:Classification of biobased plasticizers Plasticizers are widely used in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), polylactic acid (PLA), thermoplastic starch (TPS), and other modified powder materials to enhance the flowability, flexibility, and processability of macromolecules. Because of the reprotoxicity of phthalates in animals and humans, certain phthalates have recently been banned in the United States and Europe. Biobased plasticizers from green biomass–derived renewable resources with low toxicity are expected to be a substitute for phthalates. Among a variety of newly developed biobased monomers, cardanol, and isosorbide are the two most promising materials because of their unique structural features. This review summarizes the research progress of cardanol‐ and isosorbide‐based plasticizers with synergistic effects of plasticization, thermal stabilization, and anti‐migration. By summarizing and analyzing the relationship between molecular structure of plasticizer and plasticizing performance, this review can provide theoretical guidance for future research on the design of isosorbide‐ and cardanol‐based plasticizers. Highlights Biobased plasticizers with low toxicity are expected to replace certain phthalates. The plasticizing effect of single biobased plasticizer is not good. Biobased plasticizer with synergistic effects is required. There exists the trade‐off effect between the molecular weight and the compatibility. Epoxidized isosorbide ester can be used as a heat stabilizer.

Abstract:The octopus‐like plasticizers with multi‐branched structures were used as primary plasticizers in poly(vinyl chloride) and exhibited superior mechanical properties, thermal stability and migration resistance than commercial plasticizers. The development of alternatives is a priority issue for the plasticizer industry due to the reproductive toxicity and potential carcinogenicity of phthalate plasticizers. Herein we demonstrate the synthesis and characterization of multi‐branched octopus‐like plasticizers applied in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The plasticizers were achieved through a straightforward one‐step esterification reaction, resulting in four polyol ester plasticizers (glyceryl tri‐n‐octanoate [GTOE], pentaerythritol tetra‐n‐octanoate [PQOE], xylitol penta‐n‐octanoate [XPOE], and mannitol hexa‐n‐octanoate [MHOE]). The multi‐branched structure enhances the interactions between plasticizers and PVC molecules leading to superior plasticizing properties, particularly mechanical properties, thermal stability, and migration resistance compared with commercial plasticizers di(2‐ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP), and acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC). Concretely, the elongation at break of MHOE/PVC (825%) and PQOE/PVC (814.63%) was better than that of DEHP/PVC (670.02%), DOTP/PVC (490.62%) and ATBC/PVC (566.78%). The T5% of GTOE/PVC, PQOE/PVC, XPOE/PVC, and MHOE/PVC were 46.97, 67.24, 60.09 and 48.14°C higher than ATBC/PVC respectively. In the volatility resistance testing after 48 h, the weight loss of GTOE/PVC, PQOE/PVC, XPOE/PVC, and MHOE/PVC was 5.63%, 3.64%, 2.95%, and 8.88% respectively, which was far less than DEHP/PVC (15.58%), DOTP/PVC (11.83%) and ATBC/PVC (18.15%). Consequently, the obtained plasticizers demonstrate enhanced plasticizing efficiency, presenting promising alternatives to phthalate plasticizers and expanding the repertoire of choices within the plasticizer industry.
