Abstract:Realizing low-power and high-performance systems or networks akin to the human brain has been a consistent goal within the field of artificial intelligence. This paper delves into the power-adaptive adjustment capability adopted by biological neurons in response to insufficient energy supply, as well as the low-power characteristics endowed by myelination. Utilizing morphological and functional analysis methods, we propose an adaptive growth neuron model (AGN model) with adaptive power consumption and growth capabilities, along with its circuit implementation. Additional noise experiments were conducted to explore the impact of noise on biomimetic neuron circuits at different stages of myelination and under varying membrane potentials. Based on the law of charge conservation, a biomimetic neuron power consumption calculation algorithm was proposed, further discussing the feasibility of AGN model in reducing power consumption of artificial neural networks. Simulations and practical experiments both confirm that adaptive growth biomimetic neuron circuit system (AGBNCS), designed based on the AGN model, has acquired power-adaptive adjustment capability, in which power consumption can dynamically adapt to energy supply, reaching as low as 56.32% of full power. As myelination progresses, the power consumption of AGBNCS will decrease further, but it will become more sensitive to noise, significantly increasing the probability of random spike firing. Achievements of this paper provide AI networks with adaptive and growth characteristics, providing new insights for the development of neuromorphic networks.
