Abstract:‘Oppenheimer’ is a 2023 epic, biographical film about an American theoretical physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer. He is considered the “father of the atomic bomb”. The film is brilliantly written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film, based on the 2005 biography “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, chronicles the complex and consequential career of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The story begins with Oppenheimer's postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge (England) and at the University of Göttingen (Germany), details his direction of the Manhattan Project during World War II in developing nuclear weapons at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico (USA), and ends with his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing based on the false premise that J. Robert Oppenheimer was a communist spy who was passing secret information on nuclear research to the Soviet Union. Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ is the pinnacle of movie making. Nolan has delicately interwoven the intricate domains of quantum physics, human ingenuity, cruel politics, morality, legality, and ethics into a timely masterpiece and into an explosive emotional thriller. The four principal cast members (1) Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, (2) Emily Blunt as Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer (wife), (3) Matt Damon as Gen. Leslie Groves, and (4) Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss perform their role flawlessly. Murphy, in particular, uncannily acts and resembles the real─life J. Robert Oppenheimer. In addition, the performances by Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock and by Tom Conti as Albert Einstein are superb. The story is told in alternating black and white (Strauss’ version of events) and color (Oppenheimer’s version of events) scenes. The haunting musical score by Ludwig Göransson synchronizes perfectly with the movie plot. When the bomb explodes at the Trinity climax scene, the sound goes totally silent! Oppenheimer’s story is the real─life vindication of the truth after 68 years (1954─2022). A must watch Nolan’s thriller for this Nuclear Age! Thus, the said movie has triggered me to make an attempt to comprehensively capture the chronology of events covering 153 years of history (1870─2023) associated with J. Robert Oppenheimer, some events not covered in the movie plot is included in this review article with 48 Figures and 8 Appendixes. The purpose is to permanently etch in history the scientific contributions made by J. Robert Oppenheimer and by his colleagues at the Manhattan Project, which not only ended the World War II, but also sprung open a new world of freedom for humanity. Let there be no doubt that J. Robert Oppenheimer was a genuine patriotic American of our time and therefore, my only fervent hope is that our generation acknowledges, remembers, and admires their contributions and sacrifices, without which the fragile freedom that we enjoy today, even after 80 years later, would not have been possible. His legacy is one of historical greatness.

Abstract:Right before Nolan's movie was released, I gave a talk on Oppenheimer, trying to anticipate what elements of Bird and Sherwin's biography on which the movie is based would make it into the movie. In this article, written for the October 2023 edition of the newsletter of the Forum on Science and Society of the APS, I elaborate on some of the elements I missed. I used this article as the basis for a post-movie version of my talk. I corrected some errors and made some additions to this article before submitting it right before Nolan's movie is expected to clean up at the Oscars (links to recordings of the pre- and post-movie versions of my talk are included).

Abstract:Two movies appeared at the same time in the summer of 2023, Oppenheimer and Barbie. Although they seem to be quite different, they were joined together in the public eye, being referred to as "Barbieheimer". They were also notable for being very popular, although neither is a typical "summer movie". Each is focused on a serious social problem that was thought to be urgent in earlier years but is now in the forefront of the public mind. The contrasts and similarities of the two movies are discussed. Reasons are suggested for the success of the two movies in spite of their difference from the usual summer movie form. The current trends in American politics are seen as a context for the public response.

Abstract:What is most frustrating about the book as a scholarly study is the complete lack of footnotes (apparently dictated by the format of the book series). It is almost impossible to distinguish the author’s original research and insights from what is summarized from other secondary sources. The efforts to fit the book into the series’ mold of “life stories of significant westerners” also tends to exaggerate the role of the individual—in this case Oppenheimer—rather than that of larger historical forces in the rise of the West in the areas of scientific research and industrial-military-nuclear activities. Some of the latter, which are explored in The Atomic West (1998), edited by Bruce Hevly and John M. Abstract:The results of a careful analysis of all the available information on the activities of Heisenberg and of his talks during the years 1939 to 1945 can be summarized in the following way. Like several other German physicists Heisenberg was drafted by German Army Ordnance when war began in Europe in September 1939 to investigate whether the energy from splitting Uranium nuclei by neutrons could be used for technical and military purposes. Heisenberg found that this is possible in principle but that military use would require such enormous industrial expenditures that it would take many years and would be impracticable while the war lasted. The project was therefore dropped by the Nazi government in 1942. Heisenberg even refrained from calculating a precise value for the critical mass of U 235. He was relieved that he was thus spared a moral decision between obeying an order to build the bomb or risking his life by refusing to be involved in the project or sabotaging it. He was happy to be confined to a project of building a small test reactor under civilian administration that the government had approved. In 1941 Heisenberg tried to get the opinion of Niels Bohr in Copenhagen on what the international community of nuclear physicist could possibly do or prevent regarding the long-range technical feasibility of making nuclear weapons. Bohr completely misunderstood the cautious approach of Heisenberg.

Abstract:A personal account of work on the Manhattan Project in Chicago by one of the few remaining survivors of the war-time project is given, illustrating, among other things, how absurd things can happen at a time of great stress and concern.. As is well known, Los Alamos was the site specializing in the physics of the bomb while Chicago emphasized metallurgical and chemical research. Nevertheless, physics played a significant role in Chicago, as well. That is where Fermi constructed the worlds first uranium pile under the stands of Stagg field, a site at which this author got seriously irradiated. Some curious events occurring after the bomb was dropped are also related. In addition, at this time of public protest by sincere people who question the ethics of America for dropping the bomb on innocent civilians, certain facts, obviously unknown to the protesters, are presented which place the bombing in a rather different light.

Abstract:The atomic bomb American program known as Manhattan Project has been studied in detail. Historians argue that the beginning of this program is rooted in the letter Einstein sent to American President Roosevelt in the summer of 1939. This article examines Einstein's activities before 1933 as radical pacifist in favor of the principles of universal disarmament and outspoken supporter of individual war resistance and the shift of this posture when Hitler came to power in 1933. In this context, we discuss the role played by nuclear physicists during the Second World War and Einstein's decision to promote the construction of an atomic weapon in the United States. Finally, the article analyzes Einstein's struggle against the atomic race during the beginning of the cold war.

John 'Jack' Gofman. Researcher and Social Activist.: 'Fair-haired Boy' and 'Enemy Within'

Abstract:John "Jack" Gofman's research career was characterized by skills across disciplines that gave him unique insights and opportunities. He was able to choose the research strategy-laboratory, clinical, or epidemiological-most suited to the state of the problem. But Gofman's curiosity and intensity, his integrity and courage, led to dual reputations-one as a "fair-haired boy," another as a "troublesome crank"-first in atomic science, then in cardiovascular medicine, and finally in radiation energy and health policy. Gofman's earliest success was in the 1940s as a University of California-Berkeley graduate student in physical chemistry with Glenn Seaborg. Using simple laboratory methods he innovated the isolation of radioactive elements ultracentrifugally and determined their fission rates. In 1943 he produced the single milligram of plutonium needed urgently by J. Robert Oppenheimer to confirm its candidacy to power the atomic device that would implode over Nagasaki. As a young medical researcher in the 1950s, Gofman was the first to successfully isolate blood lipoprotein (LP) fractions by simply adding saline solution to serum. This increased its density such that all the LP present would float, then separate into discrete fractions on ultracentrifugation. In pioneer serial studies, Gofman and colleagues explored serum LP distributions in healthy and patient populations, LP responses to contrasting diets, and LP power to predict coronary heart disease risk (CHD). Their findings formed the platform for Brown and Goldstein's Nobel Prize discovery of hepatic low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors, and thus, the mechanism of lipid transport between blood and tissues. Together these provided fuller understanding of the pathogenesis and possible prevention of atherosclerosis. From the 1960s, Gofman reengaged with nuclear science in mutidisciplined studies that found cell damage and health effects of ionizing radiation were proportionate to the dosage. His conclusion that there was "no safe level" of exposure conflicted with "safe levels" recommended by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). Eventually, his findings, persistent questioning of policy, and effective advocacy against U.S. atomic energy programs resulted in the loss of both his AEC research funding and his leading national position in radiation and public health. He came to be viewed as "the enemy within." Gofman's research and activism were central to subsequent systemic reviews and constraints to what he called "U.S. adventurism:" in atom bomb testing, with "land engineering" using hydrogen bombs, and in the rapid build-up of nuclear energy for the U.S. electrical grid. Eventually, his body of evidence and recommendations about radiation effects on health were largely corroborated by the National Academy of Sciences and other authorities. They still influence planning for "clean energy" in today's global climate crisis.
