Abstract:In terms of the comprehension of modern order and values, understanding individuals and their relationship with the community has always been an important perspective. Scholars have noticed that traditional Confucian thought in China contains a profound understanding of individuals and their relationship with the community. In the Confucian perspective, an individual's significance lies in human relations, with the "family" constituting the foundation and core of these. This study presents the unique structure of the "family" in Confucian ethics and its generative significance. A literature analysis of Confucianism reveals that it places significant importance on the husband-wife relationship. The husband-wife relationship is a unity (heti) in the order of human relations, where spouses enjoy equal status and respect. The union of husband and wife propels the generational progression of the entire human relation system, making the husband-wife relationship a core node in the continuity of human ethical order. In this generative structure woven by human relations, the individuals are always subordinate to the human relationships they are involved in. The primary significance of the individual lies in the roles and corresponding responsibilities assumed within various human relations. Previous discussions on Confucian ethics have failed to clearly unveil the generative structure inherent in the concept of the family. The Confucian understanding of the individual and their relationship with the community can only be accurately grasped by clarifying this aspect.
Choose to Be More Individualistic or Collectivistic? A Reflection on Marriage Practice in Contemporary Chinese Society

Abstract:This paper explores the evolving dynamics of individualism and collectivism within the context of Chinese modernization, particularly in the realm of marriage practices. Drawing upon Hofstedes cultural dimensions theory, this research conducts two case studies of nominal marriage and marriage migration among rural migrants to assess whether social value in contemporary society reflects a shifting balance between these two values. It finds that there is a trend of departure between biological small self and societal greater self under the modernized environment. Though emerging attention has been paid to individualistic desires for seeking true loves, people still value their social identity when the small- and great- self conflict with each other, possibly through making a compromise to orthodoxy or wrapping themselves in the cloak of individualism to integrate into the so-called modernized urbanites group. Thus, it also indicates that it is hard to define a certain national culture whether appears more individualistic or collectivistic since it depends on what scale it would be measured.

Abstract:Is selfhood socially constituted and distributed? Although the view has recently been defended by some cognitive scientists, it has long been popular within anthropology and cultural psychology. Whereas older texts by Marcel Mauss, Clifford Geertz, Hazel Rose Markus, and Shinobu Kitayama often contrast a Western conception of a discrete, bounded, and individual self with a non‐Western sociocentric conception, it has more recently become common to argue that subjectivity is a fluid intersectional construction fundamentally relational and conditioned by discursive power structures. I assess the plausibility of these claims and argue that many of these discussions of self and subjectivity remain too crude. By failing to distinguish different dimension of selfhood, many authors unwittingly advocate a form of radical social constructivism that is not only incapable of doing justice to first‐person experience but which also fails to capture the heterogeneity of real communal life.

Abstract:To reduce Confucian ethics to a "hierarchy of association" or to say that it is incapable of dealing with the problems of strangers is to only see that Confucian ethics stipulates different treatments for kin relations and the sexes. However, this fails to see the multiple different dimensions of Confucian ethics. In fact, the Confucians established universal relational ethics, rationality of social engagement, and a "way of being with" in the interpersonal relationships that are obtained between the self and others. This kind of ethics was not only effective in ancient society, but it is also effective at dealing with the problems of the modern "society of strangers": it has a universal applicability. Beginning from two Confucian stories, and drawing on records of Confucius and his disciples in the Analects alongside supporting passages from the Mengzi and the Xunzi, this essay elucidates the notions of how self and other should treat each other, how wise people should know themselves and others, how benevolent people should love themselves and others, to argue that Confucianism possesses a universal relational ethics and a "way of being with", and that the multiple dimensions of Confucian ethics cannot be reduced to just one.

Abstract:The discussion of collective agency involves the reduction problem of the concept of a collective. Individualism and Cartesian internalism have long restricted orthodox theories and made them face the tension between an irreducible concept of a collective and ontological reductionism. Heterodox theories as functionalism and interpretationism reinterpret the concept of agency and accept it as realized on the level of a collective. In order to adequately explain social phenomena that have relations as their essence, in this paper we propose a relational, holistic account of collective agency and argue that functionalism and interpretationism can be integrated into such an account.

Based on an introduction to relevant results achieved in the field of cultural psychology over the past few decades, this article summarized the characteristics of Chinese culture as relationship-based, collectivism and temporality-oriented. This is an important basis for studying the current situation and the development prospects of Chinese culture as well as the key to clarifying China's future political and social road. At the same time, kinship is crucial in Chinese culture. It is also the foundation for reestablishing Chinese social ethics and order.

Abstract:By examining the changes in the conceptual associations between individualism–collectivism and 10 other concepts based on the Google Ngram Chinese Corpus from the 1950s to the 1990s, Hamamura et al. (2021) inferred (a) no rise in individualism; (b) continuing collectivism; and (c) no effect of modernization on individualism in contemporary China. We question the validity of these conclusions given the following issues in their research: (a) misinterpretation of statistical results; (b) improper calculation of cultural associations; and (c) inappropriate generalization of specific findings. Contrary to their original findings, our reanalysis of their data suggests that individualism has been increasingly accepted and associated with some positive (vs. negative) aspects of life (e.g., income vs. loss, richness vs. poverty) over recent decades in China. Future research should use more rigorous methods and diverse corpora to clarify and explain changes in individualism and collectivism in China. Abstract:It would not be much of an exaggeration to say that the notion of ecological and social embeddedness is one of the most exploited philosophical ideas these days, both in the academia and beyond. The most troublesome about the overall trend is that many proponents of the idea of social embeddedness simplistically consider selfhood as a form of aberration which merely provides vindication for inequality and violence. In this paper, instead of attacking the problem of the individual versus the collective head-on, I approach it by way of a critique of Stephen Turner’s repudiation of transcendental collectivism (Turner, 1994; Turner, 2010). According to Turner, transcendental entities, such as tacit knowledge, presuppositions, or traditions, should be altogether removed from explanatory schemata in the social sciences. I believe that Turner’s razor cuts too deep and the rejection of implicit framing is at best premature. Against the background of the identified shortcomings of Turner’s model of interactive learning, I track the interrelations between social development and the development of the self with an eye to showing that the relationship between individual selves and social reality is an extremely complex and multifactorial matter which we cannot hope to navigate without a proper transcendental frame. The frame is what mediates the relationship between the individual and the collective.
Chinese and American Thinking Patterns from Perspective of Collectivism and Individualism

Abstract:Collectivism and individualism embody eastern and western cultural value orientations respectively,presenting different cultural priorities in distributing and selecting group interests and individual interests.Based on the comparative study of Chinese and American cultures,this study is designed to analyze the differences and similarities between collectivism and individualism from the perspective of cultural value.Research shows that different thinking patterns,understanding of face,social relations,view of privacy,sense of obligation and standards of success are closely related to collectivism and individualism.Thus,Chinese culture can be described as "magnificence pursuit and group interest favoring;being frank inside,but conservative outside".American value set special emphasis on hard work,individual rights,and person to person relationship.With further comparison,the authors have found that different values have forged different thinking patterns for the Chinese people and the American people: Taichi pattern for the Chinese and linear for the American.In the field of intercultural communication,both differences and similarities should be realized to reduce cultural misunderstandings for global values and optimizing the effect of global communication.

The civil society theory in China refers to a political community of private citizens and voluntarily organized groups that are active in certain social areas. Abstract:The concept of social mentality refers to a macroscopic social mood, including emotional tones as well as social consensuses and social values, diffused through the whole society or through social groups. It is homogeneous but not equal to the simple sum of individual mentalities in society (Yang 2006). In this sense, the study of social mentality is neither about the individual psychological mechanism nor is it about pure macroscopic social facts, but rather about exploring the process of the mutual construction of individual mentality and society. In previous mainstream studies, social psychology was understood as a “behavioral science”. These studies focus more on how individual behaviors are influenced by the environment, seldom considering possible co-variations of the environment and the individual and ignoring the “social science” property of social psychology (Moscovici 2011). Such a perspective emphasizing the individual is not suitable for the study of social psychology. Actually this individualized perspective has been questioned by social psychologists and continuously revised in respective fields.
