Abstract:As a novel carbon-based fluorescent nanomaterial, the optical properties of carbon dots (CDs) in dispersed state have been extensively studied. Nevertheless, carbon dots-based fluorescent materials with high luminescence efficiency in both aggregated and dispersed states are rarely reported. Herein, hydrothermal treatment of p-phenylenediamine (PPD), followed by column chromatography, the obtained R-CDs showing excitation-independent red fluorescence (FL) emission. Significantly, yellow fluorescent powder (Y-CDs) with strong solid-state emission has been prepared by the reaction of R-CDs and salicylaldehyde (SA). More interestingly, the synthesized Y-CDs showed obvious aggregation-induced and solvent crystallization-induced FL enhancement behaviors. These findings have a certain reference significance for the development of CDs-based materials with high luminescence efficiency in both aggregated and dispersed states.

Abstract:Regulation of the fluorescence through crystalizing from the matrix in the Carbon dots (CDs)-based solid-state materials has been verified to be one of the effective methods, yet there are not only challenges in preparing such materials efficiently, but also insufficient insight into their regulation mechanisms. Here, a one-pot solvothermal route to synthesize a series of CDs-based composites with crystalline matrix is reported. These crystals exhibited multicolor fluorescence with the feature of multi-peaks emissions with increasing temperatures from 140 ℃ to 220 ℃, in which the orange emitting O-CDs@PA and the yellow emitting Y-CDs@PA crystals obtained the FLQYs of 22% and 68% respectively due to relatively stable crystalline structures. After comparative analysis to both crystals in detail, the core and the groups associated with them on the interface between CDs and matrix were adjusted in size and species during structural transformation of the crystal matrix, which changes radically the energy band structures to influence fluorescent emitting of both crystals ultimately. In addition, the reasons resulting in higher FLQY for Y-CDs@PA were provided leveraging the schematic illustration presumed based on the PL properties of both crystals. Because of the optimal optical performances, these fluorescent materials promised to fabricate WLED devices and obtained a number of photometric parameters endowed these WLED devices with the feature of warm-white light.

Abstract:Along the line of offering surface modification strategies to tune emission properties of carbon dots (CDs), a co-crystallization strategy with cyanuric acid (CA) was developed to modulate the bandgap emissions of CDs and produce highly emissive solid composite CD-based materials. The original blue emission of the CDs changed to a green emission of the CDs@CA crystals, which showed a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 62% and room temperature phosphorescence. The CA molecules firmly bonded to the surface of the CDs and cannot be disrupted by polar solvents or temperature stimuli under ambient conditions, which influenced electron transitions of CDs leading to improved luminescence with excellent thermal stability both in solution and solid states.

Abstract:Up to date, solid-state carbon dots (CDs) with bright red fluorescence have scarcely achieved due to aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect and extremely low quantum yield in deep-red to near infrared region. Here, we report a novel fluorine-defects induced solid-state red fluorescence (λem = 676 nm, the absolute fluorescence quantum yields is 4.17%) in fluorine, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped CDs (F,N,S-CDs), which is the first report of such a long wavelength emission of solid-state CDs. As a control, CDs without fluorine-doping (N,S-CDs) show no fluorescence in solid-state, and the fluorescence quantum yield/emission wavelength of N,S-CDs in solution-state are also lower/shorter than that of F,N,S-CDs, which is mainly due to the F-induced defect traps on the surface/edge of F,N,S-CDs. Moreover, the solid-state F,N,S-CDs exhibit an interesting temperature-sensitive behavior in the range of 80–420 K, with the maximum fluorescence intensity at 120 K, unveiling its potential as the temperature-dependent fluorescent sensor and the solid-state light-emitting device adapted to multiple temperatures.

Abstract:The photophysical properties of a diphenylacetylene derivative (FOEB) were investigated. The fluorescence quantum efficiency (Phi(F), %) of FOEB changes from moderate (49%) to low (9%) and to evidently enhanced (60%) in dilute solution, amorphous solid, and crystal state, respectively. This is a typical phenomenon of crystallization-induced emission enhancement (CIEE). The diphenylacetylene luminogen can be viewed as a propeller-like molecule with two blades (phenyl groups). In solution, the intramolecular rotations of the two blades around the ethynyl unit are activated and partially dissipate the energy in the photoexcited state, thereby leading to emission quenching. Consequently, FOEB exhibits moderate Phi(F) in solution. In amorphous solid, the intramolecular rotations are restricted, and a higher Phi(F) could be expected. But in fact, the strong pi-pi interactions between the luminogens cause heavier emission quenching, and the Phi(F) of the molecular aggregates is as low as 9%. In the single crystal, as the crystallographic data revealed, the two phenyl groups in the same diphenylacetylene unit are highly coplanar and the conjugation planes of the adjacent diphenylacetylene units are orthogonal to each other. Such molecular conformation and chromophore packing eliminate the intermolecular pi-pi interaction thereby greatly reducing the pi-pi interaction that caused fluorescence quenching, and meanwhile, the orthogonal packing allows the formation of C-H center dot center dot center dot pi. bonding between the adjacent phenyl groups to lock the intramolecular rotations and retain fluorescence. As a result, the FOEB single crystal shows evidently enhanced emission. Besides the CIEE property, FOEB demonstrates good liquid crystal property due to the diphenylacetylene mesogen and solvatochromic and mechnochromic effects due to the modification of diphenylacetylene with introduction of electron donor and acceptor functionalities.

Although the fluorescence of CDs in solution has been extensively studied, their solid-state fluorescence (SSF) mechanism still remains largely unexplored experimentally. Herein, solid-state fluorescent CDs with unique clusteroluminescence (CL) generated from clusterization-triggered emission are designed based on condensation between precursors with carboxyl and amino groups. The CDs demonstrate obvious concentration-dependent fluorescence and quench-resistant SSF, which is attributed to the activation of amide (n, p*) transition by the clusterization process. This sub-luminophore is non-luminescent at long wavelengths in isolated state, while it induces photoluminescence redshift via through-space interaction in aggregated state. Besides, the SSF of CDs can be tuned from quenched to quenching-resistant emission through amide formation, and the dominant fluorescent center of CDs solids is switchable from surface to edge state through amide passivation. Based on their long-wavelength CL feature, high-purity red light-emitting diode devices exhibiting 656-nm warm light are fabricated with the Commission Internationale de l ' Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.66, 0.34) and unchanged wavelength under different driving currents. These findings provide novel insights into the SSF mechanism of CDs and a universal strategy to construct fluorescent materials with tailored properties.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), one of the most promising luminescent nanomaterials, have attracted widespread concern due to their unique optoelectronic properties and widespread application. However, mass production of solid-state CDs with highly efficient full-color emission has rarely been reported, severely limiting their practical application in solid-state lighting and displays. Here, using an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) strategy, full-color solid-state fluorescent (SSF) CDs with quantum yields (QYs) of up to 55.3–27.9% have been prepared on a kilogram scale through one-step microwave-assisted pyrolysis of the same precursors. Detailed structure–property studies demonstrate that the SSF of CDs is derived from the suppression of surface carboxyl group motions and the decrease of the non-radiative rate in their aggregated state, and that their tunable emission is attributed to the excessive fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) induced by the increasing number of aromatic rings on CD surfaces. Therefore, these CDs exhibit both the AIE enhancement and red shift throughout the entire visible spectrum in the solid state. Finally, because of their excellent AIE properties, these highly efficient SSF CDs have been applied to pattern encryption, large-area luminescent fibrous membranes (LFMs), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and fingerprint detection.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as an important carbon-based nanomaterial, have been widely used in fluorescence (FL) detection, bioimaging, photocatalysis, light-emitting devices (LEDs) and many other fields, owing to their excellent optical properties. Regulating the fluorescent properties of carbon dots (CDs) in a controlled manner has been a fundamental research goal. Herein, solvent-dependent CDs (N-CDs) are synthesized through the solvothermal reaction of [Formula: see text]-phenylenediamine (OPD) in ethanol. When N-CDs are dispersed in solvents of different polarities, the emission wavelength only turned 39[Formula: see text]nm red-shift. While, the O-CDs are obtained by modifying the surface of N-CDs with 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid (TMA). O-CDs show four obvious FL emission peaks in the yellow, orange and red regions at 554[Formula: see text]nm, 604[Formula: see text]nm, 650[Formula: see text]nm and 712[Formula: see text]nm with a tail extending to 750[Formula: see text]nm, even entering into near-infrared-I (NIR-I) region. Thus, according to the special structure of CDs, this work provides a novel donor-[Formula: see text]-acceptor (D-[Formula: see text]-A) strategy for preparing long wavelength emissive CDs. Finally, the N-CDs and O-CDs are successfully applied to cellular imaging.

Abstract:As one of the most promising fluorescent nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) have been extensively studied for their fluorescent properties in solution. However, research on the synthesis of multicolor solid-state fluorescence (SSF) CDs (from blue to red) is rarely reported. Herein, we used o-phenylenediamine, m-phenylenediamine and p-phenylenediamine with dithiosalicylic acid (DTSA) in the solvothermal reaction using acetic acid as a solvent to obtain aggregation-induced emissive (AIE) CDs of red (620 nm), green (520 nm), and blue (478 nm), respectively. XPS spectra and TEM image show that with the red-shift of luminescence, the particle size and content of C=O of the CDs gradually increases. Finally, based on the non-matrix solid-state multicolor luminescence characteristics of CDs, the application of white light LED devices is realized. Besides, based on the fat-soluble properties of CDs, fingerprint detection applications are realized.

Generating Long‐wavelength Absorption Bands with Enhanced Deep Red Fluorescence and Photothermal Performance in Fused Carbon Dots Aggregates

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) with long‐wavelength absorptions and emissions are highly desired for biological applications. Herein, we report a new supra‐CDs strategy to construct long‐wavelength absorption bands based on fused CDs aggregates (f‐CDAs) through a concentration‐induced interparticle dehydration process among green emissive CDs (r‐CDs) under solvothermal treatment. The obtained fused f‐CDAs exhibit an obvious absorption band in 550–700 nm and significantly enhanced deep red fluorescence in N,N‐dimethylformamide with photoluminescence quantum yields of 15.6% and high photothermal conversion efficiency up to 26.1% in water. Benefiting from the high photothermal performance, in vivo tumor photothermal therapy has been realized via intratumoral injection of f‐CDAs under 655 nm laser irradiated at 0.5 W/cm2.

Abstract:As a new emerging ecofriendly light-emitting material, carbon dots (CDs) have been a research hotspot in the past decade. However, the synthesis of new types of CDs and the realization of multicolor solid-state emission remains challenging. Herein, we successfully synthesized a new type of N,Cl-doped CDs. The structure, morphology, composition, and optical properties, were well studied. The emission peak of fluorescent CDs solution can be modulated in the range of 512 to 613 nm by varying the concentration of CDs and the solvent type. To obtain a better emission of solid-state CDs, the as-prepared CDs are loaded on silica gel particles. Surprisingly, the solid-state CDs@silica can realize multicolor emission in the region of 521 to 600 nm by adjusting the ratio of CDs and silica. In addition, the single-component solar-simulated white light-emitting diode (WLED) was fabricated by using the CDs@silica particles as phosphor. The high quality of electroluminescence (EL) demonstrated the great potential of the CDs in the next generation of applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) offer tremendous advantages in the fields such as bioimaging, sensing, biomedicine, catalysis, information encryption, and optoelectronics. However, the inherent challenge is synthesizing CDs with a full-spectrum emission, as most CDs typically produce only blue or green emissions, which severely hinder further investigation into their fluorescence mechanism and restrict their broader applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this work, we reported a solvent-controlled strategy for the preparation of multicolor CDs with blue, yellow, and red emissions, using o-phenylenediamine (oPD) and ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BmimPF6) as precursors. The detailed characterizations proved that a solvent with a lower boiling point and lower solubility of precursors resulted in a higher degree of dehydration and carbonization process, thereby increasing carbon cores with sp2-conjugated domains and nitrogen doping and further reducing the bandgap energies, causing a significant redshift emission from blue to red. The underlying fluorescence mechanism of the prepared multicolor CDs was contributed to the surface state. Eventually, blue-, yellow-, and red-emitting CDs based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films and colorful LEDs devices were fabricated by dispersing the as-synthesized CDs into a PVA solution. The proposed solvent-controlled strategy for multicolor CDs preparation will be helpful for fully utilizing the advantages of CDs and expanding their applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as the most important type of carbon materials, have been widely used in many fields because of their unique fluorescence characteristics and excellent properties of biocompatibility. In previous studies, the fluorescence of CDs was mainly concentrated in the blue and green, whereas the red fluorescence was relatively less. Herein, we prepared efficient red-emitting CDs from 1,4-diaminonaphthalene using solvothermal methods. We discussed the effects of different solvothermal solvents on CDs. The results show that CDs prepared with octane and acetone as reaction media have the best fluorescence properties. The CDs dispersed in different organic solvents exhibited tunable emission across a wide spectrum from 427 nm to 679 nm. We further demonstrated the application of red light-emitting diode (LED) optoelectronics and fluorescence detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution.

Abstract:The mechanism of the solvation-dependent multicolor luminescence of carbon dots (CDs) is not clear, despite the fact that multicolor luminescent CDs have important applications in many fields. In this article, we report solvated chromogenic CDs with productivity of up to 57%. The luminescence of the CD particles exhibits a regular redshift in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), ethanol, water, and acetic acid. The redshift of the CDs may be ascribed to the linking of the CD surfaces to the solvent through hydrogen bonds (HB). Different surface level states are formed by HB between the surfaces of the CDs and the solvent, and differences in dispersion states lead to different energy resonance transfer (ETR) efficiencies. The CDs/B2O3 composite exhibits excellent fluorescence thermal stability, and it has also been used to manufacture white-light-emitting devices with a high color rendering index of 87. Additionally, the excellent solvation effects of the CDs have application prospects in the detection of the water content in organic solvents. Finally, the CDs are used to realize cell imaging and positioning, which has significant application prospects in biological fields.
