Abstract:Recently, red emissive carbon dots (R-CDs) have drawn widespread attention on account of their desirable fluorescence properties and good biocompatibility. Despite great efforts, facile synthesis of R-CDs for cellular imaging remains challenging and the fluorescence mechanism of R-CDs is still elusive. Herein, p-phenylenediamine-derived R-CDs with excitation-independency were successfully obtained through a facile solvothermal approach together with proportional precipitation. The fluorescent solvatochromism of R-CDs is realized, while high polarity leads to higher degree of dipole interaction between R-CDs and different solvents, favoring for emissive red-shift. Furthermore, density functional theory is adopted to explore the optical and electronic characteristics of some polycyclic aromatic molecules. Among different configurations, pyridine nitrogen and carbonyl bonds could relatively increase the charge density and significantly narrow the band gap, which can provide a crucial theoretical basis for the precise preparation of R-CDs. Moreover, R-CDs possess favorable cellular imaging ability, which indicates their potential for a promising candidate as fluorescence probes in bioimaging.

Abstract:Multicolor emissive carbon dots (CDs) have received increasing attention due to their excellent optical features. By far, insufficient studies have been conducted on the preparation and modulation of multicolor CDs, and most of the precursors used for the synthesis of multicolor CDs own benzene rings. Here, we report the solvent-engineered preparation of CDs with bright multicolor emissions. The CDs are fabricated by hydrothermal/solvothermal treatment of citric acid and cyanamide, circumventing the use of precursors containing aromatic molecules as well as the medium of concentrated acids. By simply changing the reaction solvent, the emission wavelength of the CDs shifts from the blue to yellow region, and even white emissive CDs are obtained. Specifically, blue, cyan, yellow, and white emissive CDs are obtained to exhibit photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QYs) ranging from 19.7% to 62.3%. Further studies show that the bright fluorescence might originate from molecular fluorophore grafting on the CD surface. Moreover, CDs/polymer composites with uniform bright luminescence are prepared and used as fluorescent color-converting materials for fabricating multicolor LEDs. This study extends the modulated preparation of multicolor emissive CDs that are potentially useful for optoelectronic applications.
Solvent-controlled synthesis strategy of multicolor emission carbon dots and its applications in sensing and light-emitting devices

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as a new kind of carbon-based luminescent nanomaterials, have drawn widespread attention in the fields of fluorescence sensing, optoelectronic devices, and biological imaging. This work uses citric acid (CA) and Nile Blue A (NBA) as precursors. By simply changing the solvent in the reaction, their bandgaps were systematically controlled, thereby successfully obtaining bright blue, yellow and red fluorescence emission CDs (B-, Y- and RCDs). The higher quantum yield (QY) of B-, Y- and RCDs are 64%, 57% and 51%, respectively. The selected precursors and different solvents are the key to the formation of three emission CDs. Detailed characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicate that the difference in emission color of CDs is due to the size of the sp2 conjugate domain. In addition, we used multicolor CDs as fluorescent probes to investigate their performance in detection. Among them, BCDs and YCDs can detect Sudan Red I with high selectivity and sensitivity. In the concentration range of 0 to 80 µM, the detection limits are 56 and 41 nM, respectively. Multicolor emitting phosphors and fluorescent films are also obtained by mixing CDs with other matrices. Using Ultraviolet (UV) chip as the excitation source and combining with multicolor fluorescent film and a certain proportion of B-, Y-, and RCDs/epoxy resin composites, bright monochromatic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and white LED (WLED) with high color rendering index (CRI) were prepared. The above results indicate that the multicolor CDs prepared by us have great application potential in the fields of food safety control and optical devices.

A novel method for the synthesis of carbon dots assisted by free radicals

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have gradually become a widely favored type of fluorescent nanomaterials with unlimited and promising applications. This work reports a means of breaking the shackle of method to develop new red and white CDs by introducing free radicals. The resulting white emissive CDs in this strategy are employed to demonstrate electroluminescent white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) and achieve a record-high external quantum efficiency (0.95%) of one-step-produced white CDs (WCD)-LEDs, which dramatically simplifies the whole fabrication processes of WLEDs. With additional passivation treatment, the red CDs (RCD2) with excellent properties such as N and S co-doping, bright (quantum yield = 49%) and stable photoluminescence (PL), large positive zeta potential (+20.5 mV), and two-photon fluorescence are obtained. Such RCD2 are used for rapid staining (5 min) of yeast cells. The two CDs synthesized via this method have outstanding performance in different aspects, which provides new promise of CDs for further functionalization and applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a promising new type of fluorescent nanomaterial, although one of their main problems is the tuning of the emission wavelength toward the long wavelength region. In this work, the influence of reaction solvents to emission of CDs was systematically studied using four groups of classical precursors (citric acid individually mixed with four nitrogenous organic compounds). Water and toluene were selected to represent the hydrophobic and hydrophilic reaction medium, respectively. It is interesting to observe that in toluene solvent, all the CD products yield two emission bands of blue and yellow light, and the relative intensity of the yellow to blue can be finely tuned by the precursors. In contrast, the CDs formed in water only demonstrate blue emission. Systematic studies indicate that the spectral change results from the content control of carbogenic/ defect states to surface states and the energy transfer from the carbogenic/ defect states to the surface states. Moreover, solid-state luminescent CD-polymers were fabricated that also demonstrated continuously tunable emission properties. This work provides a new strategy for recognizing the generation of long wavelength-emitting CDs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) provides unprecedented opportunities for optical applications due its unique properties, but the energy-extensive consumption, high-risk factor and time-consuming synthesis procedure greatly hinders its industrialization process. Herein, we proposed an ultra-low energy consumption solvent-free synthetic strategy for fast preparing green/red fluorescence carbon dots (G-/R-CDs) using m-/o-phenylenediamine and primary amine hydrochloride. The involvement of primary amine hydrochloride can improve the formation rate of G-CDs/R-CDs through effectively absorbing microwave energy and providing acid react environment. The developed CDs exhibit good fluorescence efficiency, optical stability and membrane permeability for dexterous bioimaging in vivo. Based on inherently high nitrogen content, the G-CDs/R-CDs possess excellent nuclear/nucleolus targeting ability, and were successfully applied for screening cancer and normal cells. Furthermore, the G-CDs/R-CDs were further applied for fabricating high-safety and high-color rendering index white light-emitting diodes, providing a perfect candidate for indoor lighting. This study opens up new horizons for advancing practical applications of CDs in related fields of biology and optics.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon dots (CDs) have raised broad interest because of their great potential in the fluorescence related fields, such as photocatalysis and bioimaging. CDs exhibit different optical properties when dissolved in various solvents. However, the effects of solvents during the process of preparation on the fluorescence emission of CDs are still unclear. In this work, CDs were prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal route. Typical critic acid and thiourea were used as precursors. Through changing the volume ratio of water to N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF), we have obtained color tunable CDs, with the emission wavelength from 450 to 640 nm. TEM images, Raman and XPS spectra indicate that the particle size of CDs and the content of surface functional groups (C–N/C–S and C≡N bonds) increase with the increasing ratio of DMF to water, which results in the optimal emission wavelength red-shifted. The prepared multicolor CDs may have prospects in the lighting applications. Graphical abstract

Abstract:Fluorescent red-emissive carbon dots (RCDs) were synthesized using the solvothermal method with citric acid as a carbon source, N , N -dimethylformamide as a nitrogen source, and formamide as a solvent. The as-synthesized RCDs show red fluorescence in an aqueous solution and have an excellent stability towards photobleaching as well as extremely low cytotoxicity and are successfully used for cell and zebrafish imaging. The results indicate that RCDs have potential applications in both in vitro and in vivo bioimaging.

Abstract:Full-color emissive carbon dots (CDs) hold a great promise for various applications, especially in light emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the existing synthetic routes for CDs are carried out in solutions, which suffer from low yields, high pressures, various byproducts, large amounts of waste solvents, and complicated photoluminescence (PL) origins. Therefore, it is necessary to explore large scale synthesis of CDs with high quantum yield (QY) across the entire visible range from a single carbon source by a solvent-free method. In this work, a series of CDs with tunable PL emission from 442 to 621 nm, QY of 23%–56%, and production yield within 34%–72%, are obtained by heating o-phenylenediamine with the catalysis of KCl. Detailed characterizations identify that, the differences between these CDs with respect to the graphitization degree, graphitic nitrogen content, and oxygen-containing functional groups, are responsible for their distinct optical properties, which can be modulated by controlling the deamination and dehydrogenation processes during reactions. Blue, green, yellow, red emissive films, and LEDs are prepared by dispersing the corresponding CDs into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). All types of white LEDs (WLEDs) with high colorrendering- index (CRI), including warm WLEDs, standard WLEDs, and cool WLEDs, are also fabricated by mixing the red, green, and blue emissive CDs into PVA matrix by the appropriate ratios.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as novel fluorescent probes due to their remarkable optical properties; however, red emission is still rare, has a relatively low efficiency, and its mechanism remains ambiguous. Herein, relatively efficient red-emission CDs based on p-phenylenediamine were prepared through various solvothermal means, where the highest quantum yield approached 41.1% in n-amyl alcohol, which was the most efficient quantum yield reported to date. Various structural characterizations were performed and confirmed that the red emission originated from the molecular states consisting of a nitrogen-containing organic fluorophore. The CDs were dispersed in different organic solvents and showed tunable emission, evolving from green to orange-red in aprotic solvents and a red emission in protic solvents. Further solvent correlation studies indicated that the hydrogen bond effect between the CDs and solvents was the main mechanism leading to the spectral shift. Accordingly, solid-state luminescent CDs-polymers were fabricated, which also demonstrated continuously tunable emission properties. This work opens a new window for recognizing the generation of tunable and red-emission CDs.

Abstract:Red-emissive carbon dots (R-CDs) have been widely studied because of their potential application in tissue imaging and optoelectronic devices. At present, most R-CDs are synthesized by using aromatic precursors, but the synthesis of R-CDs from non-aromatic precursors is challenging, and the emission mechanism remains unclear. Herein, different R-CDs were rationally synthesized using citric acid (CA), a prototype non-aromatic precursor, with the assistance of ammonia. Their structural evolution and optical mechanism were investigated. The addition of NH3·H2O played a key role in the synthesis of CA-based R-CDs, which shifted the emission wavelength of CA-based CDs from 423 to 667 nm. Mass spectrometry (MS) analysis indicated that the amino groups served as N dopants and promoted the formation of localized conjugated domains through an intermolecular amide ring, thereby inducing a significant emission redshift. The red-emissive mechanism of CDs was further confirmed by control experiments using other CA-like molecules (e.g., aconitic acid, tartaric acid, aspartic acid, malic acid, and maleic acid) as precursors. MS, nuclear magnetic resonance characterization, and computational modeling revealed that the main carbon chain length of CA-like precursors tailored the cyclization mode, leading to hexatomic, pentatomic, unstable three/four-membered ring systems or cyclization failure. Among these systems, the hexatomic ring led to the largest emission redshift (244 nm, known for CA-based CDs). This work determined the origin of red emission in CA-based CDs, which would guide research on the controlled synthesis of R-CDs from other non-aromatic precursors.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as the most important type of carbon-based material, have been widely used in many fields because of their excellent properties. In particular, multicolor fluorescent CDs with high photoluminescence quantum yield are the focus of active research. Herein, red, green and blue CDs (RGB CDs) were successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method from o-phenylenediamine under different reaction conditions. The RGB-CDs have stable optical properties and significant photoluminescence characteristics. Structural and elemental analyses propose a conjugated structure and the surface state of the CDs as the main causes for the different color emission of RGB-CDs. In addition, a white fluorescent CD solution was prepared by mixing these multicolor fluorescent CDs in appropriate proportions.
Hydrothermal Synthesis of Carbon Dots with High-Yield, Ultra-Narrow Emission and Self-Assembled Architectures

Abstract:In the development of carbon dots (CDs), the unclear reaction process, the complicated and environment unfriendly purification process, and the low yield of the bottom-up synthesis have hindered its further applications. In this work, o-phenylenediamine was used as the precursor to synthesize green (g-CDs), orange-red (o-CDs), and red fluorescent CDs (r-CDs) with high-yield and good fluorescence monochromaticity under the action of the oxidant by hydrothermal method. As a result, r-CDs with dual emission, FWHMs of 20 nm and 30 nm and high yield of 83.3%, o-CDs with FWHM of 40 nm, and g-CDs with relatively high yield of 32.0% were obtained. It had been concluded that the narrow emissions were due to the low nitrogen and oxygen contents in the CDs and the formation of a single emission center of CDs after dehydration and carbonization of the uniform intermediate product (polymer), and the output of the polymer directly relates to the yield of CDs. Moreover, their linear relationships had been developed for the first time between the yield of CDs and the amount of the oxidant (hydrogen peroxide or perchloric acid), which provided a way for preparing high-yield CDs. And a logarithmic relationship had been found first between the wavelength of aggregation-induced emission (y) of r-CDs and its concentration (x) (the equation was y=8.853ln(x)+688.53, r=0.998). XRD and SEM characterizations indicated that zero-dimensional CDs could form high-dimensional carbon nanomaterials by self-assembly, such as graphite, carbon fiber-like, bundle-like, and carbon nanotube-like architectures.
Solvent-Controlled Strategy for Color-Tunable Fluorescence Carbon Dots and Their Application in Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) offer tremendous advantages in the fields such as bioimaging, sensing, biomedicine, catalysis, information encryption, and optoelectronics. However, the inherent challenge is synthesizing CDs with a full-spectrum emission, as most CDs typically produce only blue or green emissions, which severely hinder further investigation into their fluorescence mechanism and restrict their broader applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this work, we reported a solvent-controlled strategy for the preparation of multicolor CDs with blue, yellow, and red emissions, using o-phenylenediamine (oPD) and ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BmimPF6) as precursors. The detailed characterizations proved that a solvent with a lower boiling point and lower solubility of precursors resulted in a higher degree of dehydration and carbonization process, thereby increasing carbon cores with sp2-conjugated domains and nitrogen doping and further reducing the bandgap energies, causing a significant redshift emission from blue to red. The underlying fluorescence mechanism of the prepared multicolor CDs was contributed to the surface state. Eventually, blue-, yellow-, and red-emitting CDs based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films and colorful LEDs devices were fabricated by dispersing the as-synthesized CDs into a PVA solution. The proposed solvent-controlled strategy for multicolor CDs preparation will be helpful for fully utilizing the advantages of CDs and expanding their applications.

Abstract:Multicolor fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) have potential applications in multichannel detection and multicolor imaging. In this study, multicolor fluorescent CDs were synthesized by changing the solvent type and adjusting the reactant ratio. The four prepared CDs emitted bright and stable blue (B-), green (G-), yellow (Y-), and red (R-) fluorescence under a single UV light (λ ex = 365 nm). The photoluminescence (PL) emission wavelengths changed from 445 nm for B-CDs to 620 nm for R-CDs, and therefore covered the entire visible spectrum. The absolute quantum yields for the B-, G-, Y-, and R-CDs were 27.3%, 31.1%, 22.9%, and 8.8%, respectively. Characterization of the CDs showed that the differences among the optical features of the four prepared CDs arise from the differences among the surface states and nitrogen-derived structures in the carbon core. The four prepared CDs all showed low toxicity and steady PL, and therefore have potential applications in both in vitro and in vivo imaging.

Abstract:In this work, red-emitting carbon dots (R-CDs) with a high quantum yield (QY) of 28% in water were synthesized for the first time by heating an ethanol solution of pulp-free lemon juice. The obtained R-CDs were mono-dispersed with an average diameter of 4.6 nm, and exhibited excitation-independent emission at 631 nm. Meanwhile, these R-CDs featured low cytotoxicity and good photostability, which allow R-CDs to be employed as luminescent probes for in vitro/in vivo bioimaging. In addition, a detailed study on the physical properties and structural compositions of the sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reduced R-CDs with orange emission suggested that surface states on the R-CD surfaces and nitrogen-derived structures in the R-CD cores synergistically caused their intense red luminescence. The low-cost and eco-friendly synthesis method and favorable optical properties of R-CDs make these carbon dots promising for further applications, such as bioimaging and light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as a new zero-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterial with desirable optical properties, exhibit great potential for many application fields. However, the preparation technique of multiple emission CDs with high yield is difficult and complex. Therefore, exploring the large-scale and straightforward synthesis of multicolor CDs from a simple carbon source is necessary. In this work, the solvent-free method prepares a series of multicolor emission CDs from dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA). The maximum emission wavelengths are 408, 445, 553, 580, and 610 nm, respectively, covering the visible light region. The 2,4- and 2,6-CDs possess the longer emission wavelength caused by the 2,4-, and 2,6-DHBA easily undergo decarboxylation to form the larger sp2 domain graphitized structure. These CDs incorporated with g-C3N4 can significantly improve the photocatalytic water-splitting hydrogen production rate by extending the visible light absorption and enhancing the charge separation efficiency. The long-wavelength emission CDs can further enhance photocatalytic activity primarily by improving visible light absorption efficiency.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as an important carbon-based nanomaterial, have been widely used in fluorescence (FL) detection, bioimaging, photocatalysis, light-emitting devices (LEDs) and many other fields, owing to their excellent optical properties. Regulating the fluorescent properties of carbon dots (CDs) in a controlled manner has been a fundamental research goal. Herein, solvent-dependent CDs (N-CDs) are synthesized through the solvothermal reaction of [Formula: see text]-phenylenediamine (OPD) in ethanol. When N-CDs are dispersed in solvents of different polarities, the emission wavelength only turned 39[Formula: see text]nm red-shift. While, the O-CDs are obtained by modifying the surface of N-CDs with 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid (TMA). O-CDs show four obvious FL emission peaks in the yellow, orange and red regions at 554[Formula: see text]nm, 604[Formula: see text]nm, 650[Formula: see text]nm and 712[Formula: see text]nm with a tail extending to 750[Formula: see text]nm, even entering into near-infrared-I (NIR-I) region. Thus, according to the special structure of CDs, this work provides a novel donor-[Formula: see text]-acceptor (D-[Formula: see text]-A) strategy for preparing long wavelength emissive CDs. Finally, the N-CDs and O-CDs are successfully applied to cellular imaging.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have garnered significant attention due to their remarkable optical properties and low cytotoxicity. However, most studies on CDs have predominantly focused on their fluorescence behavior in solution, because their π-π stacking interactions, fluorescence resonance energy transfer, and surface electron transitions can induce fluorescence quenching through aggregation. In this investigation, three variants of solid-state fluorescent CDs were synthesized using a solvent-free pyrolysis technique under atmospheric pressure at 200 °C. In the solvent-free CDs syntheses, urea as a dispersant, while the carbon precursors ( m -phenylenediamine, DL -aspartic acid, and p -phenylenediamine) were diversified. The photoluminescence quantum yields of the resultant blue-, yellow-, and red-emitting CDs powders were measured to be 11.62, 3.59, and 0.57 %, respectively. Radiative transitions resulting from the eigenstates of CDs dominate. Fluorescence decay studies suggested that radiative transitions resulting from the eigenstates of the CDs dominate as the emission maximum shifts to the red region. These CDs exhibit outstanding solid-state fluorescence, enabling their successful utilization in latent fingerprinting imaging. Remarkably, the red-emitting CDs also exhibited blue room-temperature phosphorescence, observable for ~3 s.
