Abstract:A finer record of biodiversity We have pressing, human-generated reasons to explore the influence of environmental change on biodiversity. Looking into the past can not only inform our understanding of this relationship but also help us to understand current change. Paleontological records depend on fossil availability and predictive modeling, however, and thus tend to give us a picture with large temporal jumps, millions of years wide. Such a scale makes it difficult to truly understand the action of environmental forces on ecological processes. Enabled by a supercomputer, Fan et al. used machine learning to analyze a large marine Paleozoic dataset, creating a record with time intervals of only ∼26,000 years (see the Perspective by Wagner). This fine-scale resolution revealed new events and important details of previously described patterns. Science , this issue p. 272 ; see also p. 249

Abstract:The 'Cambrian Explosion' describes the rapid increase in animal diversity and abundance, as manifest in the fossil record, between ~540 and 520 million years ago (Ma). This event, however, is nested within a far more ancient record of macrofossils extending at least into the late Ediacaran at ~571 Ma. The evolutionary events documented during the Ediacaran–Cambrian interval coincide with geochemical evidence for the modernisation of Earth's biogeochemical cycles. Holistic integration of fossil and geochemical records leads us to challenge the notion that the Ediacaran and Cambrian worlds were markedly distinct, and places biotic and environmental change within a longer-term narrative. We propose that the evolution of metazoans may have been facilitated by a series of dynamic and global changes in redox conditions and nutrient supply, which, potentially together with biotic feedbacks, enabled turnover events that sustained multiple phases of radiation. We argue that early metazoan diversification should be recast as a series of successive, transitional radiations that extended from the late Ediacaran and continued through the early Palaeozoic. We conclude that while the Cambrian Explosion represents a radiation of crown-group bilaterians, it was simply one phase amongst several metazoan radiations, some older and some younger.

Abstract:The evolution of paleoecosystems was often accompanied by the expansion of ecological niches; organismal habitats extended from the sediment surface to the water column, and then to the interior part of the sediment. A major step in ecosystem innovation was recorded in the macrobiota of the upper Doushantuo Formation during the middle-late Ediacaran Period, including the Miaohe biota from western Hubei and the Wenghui biota from northeastern Guizhou, in the Yangtze Block, South China. The macrobiota was dominated by branching and unbranching macroalgae, with abundant metazoans (including worms or vermiform animals, trilobozoans, poriferans, and medusiform animals) and ichnofossils. They lived in a warm and calm tropical ocean, with plentiful sunlight, oxygen, and nutrients. The habitats of the organisms can be subdivided into three layers of morphology and paleoecology: the epibenthic layer, the erect-benthic layer, and the plankton layer. In the case of the epibenthic and erect-benthic layers, the organisms lived on the depositional surface, or were fixed on the seafloor; in the plankton layer, the organisms floated in the water column or on the water surface. In middle-late Ediacaran macroorganism paleoecosystems, the following changes occurred: diversification, the intensification of competition between organisms, a reinforcement of the ability of organisms to change their surroundings, and the effective conversion of bioenergy. The macroorganism paleoecosystem was a key transition in the establishment of a complicated and multilayered ecological pyramid and increasing atmospheric oxygen, and a prelude to the Cambrian explosion.

Abstract:The exceptionally preserved soft-bodied fossils from the Chengjiang Biota of southwest China have proved to be critical for our understanding of the biodiversity and ecology of the Cambrian explosion of animals. Almost all previously reported soft-bodied Chengjiang fossils are from the event mudstone beds (EB) of the Yu’anshan Formation. Here, we present the first comprehensive investigation of the soft-bodied fossils from the interbedded background mudstone beds (BGB), based on collections made across the past decade, and characterize their preservation. Soft internal cellular organs/tissues, such as digestive tracts and glands, cardiovascular systems, nervous systems, and musculature, are predominantly preserved as carbonaceous compressions, in contrast to their iron oxide−rich preservation in the EB. Our work highlights two distinct preservation modes within a single Burgess Shale−type Lagerstätte, possibly due to the complex interplay of decay, kerogenization, and pyritization.

Abstract:During the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition, a series of stratal continuous and well-preserved siliceous rock and phosphorite assemblages developed in Qingzhen, Guizhou Province, China, facilitating research on the biological evolution, marine chemistry, and palaeoecological environment of this period. Therefore, we investigated the paleontology, trace and rare earth elements, total organic carbon, total sulfur content, and Zn isotopes of the phosphorus-bearing rock series in the Taozichong Formation of the Cambrian period in Qingzhen. Geochemical analysis reveals that the sedimentary rocks in this area were formed in the oxygen-rich seawater environment and were not affected by high-temperature hydrothermal activity. The upwelling ocean current provided abundant rare earth elements and other nutrient elements, as well as conditions for the prosperity of biota in Qingzhen. In addition, the δ66Zn value (−0.21‰–0.41‰ range and 0.17‰ mean) in the Qingzhen phosphorous rock series was much lower than that in seawater, indicating a strong level of biological productivity. The variation trend of δ13C, δ18O, and δ66Zn exhibited four stages and three obvious drift events. The results suggest that climate change during this period led to the intermittent flourishing and extinction of organisms, which triggered the negative drift of δ13C and δ18O in the ocean, resulting in a coordinated response of δ66Zn. The unique ecological environment of the Taozichong Formation in Qingzhen also provides favorable conditions for the population continuation of Ediacaran-type benthic soft-bodied metazoon dominated by discoid fossils, Shaanxilithes, worm fossils, and sponge fossils in the Cambrian strata, as well as participation in the global biological explosion events. The study area provides new insights for rebuilding the global Ediacaran–Cambrian ecosystem during the transition period.

Abstract:The sedimentary architecture of carbonate platforms is determined by distinct paleobiological, tectonics, climatic, oceanic and environmental conditions. During the Cambrian period, a rimmed carbonate platform system developed over an area of ∼28 ×104 km2 in the Tarim Basin. However, the evolution mechanism and its predominant controlling factors remain poorly understood. The investigation utilized integrated analysis of cores, thin sections, 3-D seismic, well logging and geochemical data to explain the sequence stratigraphic framework, depositional architecture and main controlling factors. Sixteen distinct microfacies (MF1–MF16) are identified based on thin-section analysis of the five lithofacies, which could be further grouped into fourteen microfacies associations (MA1-MA14). These fourteen microfacies associations respectively represent fourteen facies belts of the five facies of the shelf, outer ramp, middle ramp, platform margin and restricted platform. Microfacies and seismic characteristics have provided the basis for establishing a sequence-stratigraphic framework. Two regionally extensive second-order sequences (CS1-CS2) are developed in the Lower-Middle Cambrian succession; CS1 incorporates five third-order sequences (Sq1-Sq5); CS2 incorporates three third-order sequences (Sq6-Sq8). The lateral migration and vertical arrangement of depositional facies resulted in a unique depositional architecture. The overall carbonate platform architecture is interpreted from 3D seismic data, integrated with the depositional facies interpretations to document the evolution of the depositional setting over time from a broad shelf (Sq1-Sq2), to a distally steepening ramp (Sq3-Sq4), to a weekly rimmed platform (Sq5), and finally to a strongly rimmed platform (Sq6-Sq8). Relative sea-level (RSL) curves were reconstructed through an integrated analysis of Fischer plots from three wells. The determined RSL curve matches closely with reconstructed paleo-water depths indicated by the distribution of microfacies types. The inferred paleo-water depths changes comprise two long-term shallow–deep–shallow trends, upon which eight intermediate-term cycles are superimposed. Microfacies also have been applied to explain the evolution of the platform in response to RSL change and other environmental factors. A major transgression occurred in the lower parts of CS1. Results demonstrate that RSL and paleo-water depth changes in the Lower-Middle Cambrian are consistent with known global sea-level changes indicated by geochemical elements. The architectural and sequence-stratigraphic evolution of the progradational rimmed carbonate platform was controlled principally by eustasy. This study is important due to the limited information on Cambrian rimmed platforms.
Palaeogeography and palaeoecology of the Ediacaran(Sinian) macrofossil biota in South China

Abstract:Ediacaran(635-542,Ma) is the important geological period between the last global glaciation(Marinoan) and the Cambrian "explosion of life". As a result of the tremendous changes of Neoproterozoic climate and environment,rapid evolution and diversity of many eukaryotic lives,including multicellular organisms arise to adapt significant radiation. The Sinian Doushantuo and Dengying Formations in South China and their coeval strata represent the deposition of this special geological time. The complete stratigraphic record,diverse depositional environments and abundant micro-and macrofossils make South China to be one of the ideal areas for further studies on the Ediacaran(Sinian) stratigraphic division and global correlation,and to explore the early origin and radiation of multicellular organisms of the areas of radiation. In particular,the more abundant macrofossils occurring in the Ediacaran(Sinian) strata in the Yangtze platform marginal facies,contain the more distinct assemblages with significant diversity. The recent researches indicate that the Sinian macrofossil assemblages in South China also include a couple of typical fossils of the Ediacaran Biota in Australia and the White Sea biota in Russian. We synthesize in this paper the previous researches in recent years on the Sinian lithofacies and Palaeogeography in South China;mainly displays some newly collections of the "Wenghui Biota" from Jiangkou,Guizhou and the "Jiangchuan Biota" from Jiangchuan,Yunnan;briefly describe the palaeogeographic locations and several Sinian macrofossil assemblages including "Miaohe Biota". And hereby we conclude that a variety of Sinian macrofossil assemblages in South China were living and buried in the transitional/slope zone of carbonate rocks and clastic rocks at the margin of the Yangtze platform,the characteristics of each macrofossil assemblage were constrained by its sedimentary microfacies and went on changes regularly. The macrofossil records suggest that in this period,accompanied by significant climatic and environmental changes,a series of important evolution events took place,many macroalgae and metazoan generally appeared a diverse developments and laid an ecological foundation for the huge Cambrian radiation of early animal;and in the southern China,a brand new neritic ecosystem had been formed,the dominant planktonic and benthic eukaryotic algae were very prosperous to be the marine primary producers,especially the abundant multicellular macroscopic algae might be main plants of hydrocarbon generation in the transitional period of Precambrian-Cambrian.

Abstract:The interaction between the Earth's surface and deep geodynamic processes has a great influence on sedimentary patterns and characteristics of sedimentary systems, especially in the continental margin, such as the southern part of the East China Sea Continental Shelf Basin (ECSCSB). However, the exact processes and dynamics are poorly understood. The numerical tool (Badlands) was adopted to simulate the geological evolution of the southern ECSCSB during the Mesozoic transitional regime of the West Pacific continental margin, between 200 and 100 Ma. The numerical model involving four-dimensional (4D) sequence stratigraphy was validated by comparing with the tectono-morphology, sedimentary environments and sediment distribution. According to our findings, the transition was mainly controlled by three structural stages. The first transitional stage of the southern ECSCSB was mainly controlled by lithospheric-scale tectonic evolution. In the second stage, the dynamic topography contributed to slow regional uplift, while the last stage showed mantle-induced dynamic subsidence. The model results on 4D geomorphic characteristics, sediment distribution of basin evolution and deep dynamic topography, provided a quantitative image for geological evolution of the West Pacific continental margin in the Mesozoic.

Abstract:The Middle Triassic is regarded as an important period of biotic recovery after the end-Permian mass extinction, of which the Middle Triassic Luoping biota represents a full recovery of marine ecosystem. However, the research on the relationship between biotic recovery and environmental evolution in the Middle Triassic remains poorly understood. To investigate this issue, microfacies analysis and multiple geochemical proxies (Al, Ti, Th, Sc, and & sum;REY) of an Anisian (Middle Triassic) succession (the Member II of the Guanling Formation, Leniduo section, South China) yielding the Luoping biota are carried out. Five sedimentary facies are identified through field investigation and microfacies analysis: open platform, restricted platform, tidal flat, shoal and intra-platform depression. According to the changes of multiple geochemical proxies, this section can be divided into five stages. A sudden facies transition from open platform to intra-platform depression, and high contents of Al, Ti, Sc, Th, and & sum;REY in stage IV indicate a rapid sea-level rise and detrital input increase, coinciding with the preservation of the Luoping biota. This evidence suggest that enhanced continental weathering caused by global warming, global sea level rise, and frequent regional volcanic activities promoted the death and preservation of the Luoping biota.

Abstract:The Ediacaran-Cambrian (E-C) transition period witnessed one of the most important environmental changes in Earth's history. The western margin of the South China Block (SCB), a shallow-water environment, shows a complete sedimentary record of the E-C transition. Section surveys revealed that dolostone, microbial carbonate, chert, and phosphorite predominantly compose the lithologies of the western margin of the SCB during the E-C transition. Petrological analysis indicates that microbial carbonates in this region exhibit stromatolitic, thrombolytic, cavitated, and sporadic microbial structures. Microbial carbonates with stromatolitic, thrombolytic/cavitated, and sporadic structures correspond to strong, moderate, and weak hydrodynamic conditions, respectively. Microcrystalline dolomites crystallize during the syngenesis stage, while meso- to macrocrystalline and sparry dolomites develop during the burial diagenesis stage. Analysis of major elements and rare earth elements anomalies (δCe: 0.580 ~ 0.753; δEu: 1.234 ~ 1.433) suggests that the siliceous component originates from hot-water sources and is transported into shallow-water environments by upwelling. The absence of a δEu anomaly and the morphology of peloids indicate that the phosphatic component is primarily influenced by biological activity and upwelling. During the Tongwan Movement (545–535 Ma) in the E-C transition period, cyclical upwelling transported increased amounts of deep-source materials into shallow platform waters, leading to higher concentrations of siliceous components and widespread microbial mortality. Following the widespread microbial mortality, the phosphatic component became enriched in deep-water environments. Subsequently, the upwelling transported siliceous- and phosphatic-rich fluids back into the shallow-water environments. The phosphatic component was ultimately assimilated by small shelly fauna and deposited in the phosphatic-rich strata of the early Cambrian period. This study elucidates the origins of complex lithological compositions and the sedimentary evolution model in shallow water environments of the E-C transition period in western SCB, offering evidence for global environmental changes during this period.

Links Between Hydrographic Restriction, Redox Conditions, and Organic Matter Accumulation in the Early Cambrian Intrashelf Basin, South China

Abstract:There was a strong relationship between paleo-oceanic conditions and organic matter accumulation during the critical period of the Early Cambrian. The Yangtze Platform in South China provides an opportunity to study this relationship, but the basin architecture and paleo-hydrographic dynamics remain poorly understood, which hinders one's understanding of the evolution in oceanic redox state and its relationship to organic matter accumulation. To fill the knowledge gap, a newly obtained data set from the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation shales (Late Cambrian Stage 2 -Stage 3) of the intrashelf basin is used. Results show that the molybdenum-uranium covariation, along with the abnormally low Mo contents and Mo/TOC ratios in the anoxic (ferruginous and euxinic) Niutitang shales of the intrashelf basin, indicate a hydrographic circulation that is moderately to strongly restricted. The hydrographic evolution at different stages, influencing redox conditions to a certain extent, in conjunction with variations in primary productivity, controls the enrichment of organic matter. In particular, the relatively low sea level during Interval I (Late Stage 2) resulted in weak connectivity between the intrashelf basin and open ocean; this, coupled with high primary productivity and enhanced chemical weathering, formed stable stratified water (euxinic bottom-water) conditions that were favorable for organic matter enrichment. In contrast, Interval II (Early-Middle Stage 3) and Interval III (Late Stage 3) involved less organic matter enrichment due to weakened restricted hydrographic circulation (Interval II) and oxic bottom-water conditions (Interval III). This study highlights how hydrodynamic processes affected the marine environment during the Early Cambrian and reveals that sluggish oceanic circulation combined with high primary productivity led to anomalous enrichment of organic matter. Abstract:The Cambrian Series 2–Miaolingian transition is a pivotal period during Earth history, which witnessed the decline of biodiversity and the reduction in biomass, i.e., the redlichiid–olenellid trilobite extinction. The notable δ13C excursion (RECE) near the Cambrian Series 2–Miaolingian boundary in east Gondwana and China apparently corresponds with the redlichiid trilobite extinction. To better understand the causal mechanism of this biotic crisis, we report the carbon isotope stratigraphy and facies changes from Cambrian Series 2–Miaolingian transition of the Mantou Formation on the southern North China Craton. The carbon isotope excursions at the Cambrian Series 2–Miaolingian transition in the study area are 0.7‰ in the Chishanhe section and −0.2‰ in the Luoquan section, respectively, showing a weak negative excursion or even no negative excursion. The sedimentary environments in the study area gradually changed through time from a clastic tidal flat to a carbonate platform across the transition, which indicated a gradual rise in sea level, with anoxic conditions occurring predominantly before the RECE δ13C excursion. Microbially induced sedimentary structures and oncoids occurred widely at the top of Cambrian Series 2. Abundant metazoan trace fossils were preserved in the Miaolingian Series of the study area. The evolution of biogenic structures across the Cambrian Series 2–Miaolingian transition indicates the emergence of harsh environments associated with the proliferation of MISS and oncoids at the RECE horizon and the recovery of benthic metazoan fauna after the RECE biotic crisis.

The middle Cambrian Linyi Lagerstätte from the North China Craton: a new window on Cambrian evolutionary fauna

Abstract:The rapid appearance of major animal groups and complex marine communities during the Cambrian explosion is recorded in large part in Burgess Shale-type lagerstätten. However, the restricted temporal and spatial distribution of known lagerstätten continues to hinder the formation of a comprehensive perspective on Cambrian evolutionary faunas. Here we describe the Linyi Lagerstätte (ca. 504 mya), a new Cambrian Miaolingian lagerstätte from the Zhangxia Formation in Shandong Province, North China. The Linyi Lagerstätte contains a variety of well-preserved soft-bodied fossils, among which the non-trilobite arthropods, particularly the mollisoniids and radiodonts, are the most important groups. The new assemblage is remarkable for its excellent preservation of arthropod limbs, eyes and guts, as well as for its close similarity in taxonomic composition to Laurentian lagerstätten. The distinctive Linyi Lagerstätte holds great promise for providing additional insights into the morphological disparity, community structure and paleogeographic range of marine faunas during the middle Cambrian (Miaolingian).
