Abstract:Organic matter is the basis for oil and gas generation, and the depositional environment controls its enrichment. The first member of the Qingshankou Formation (K 2 qn 1 ) in Songliao Basin has a thick organic-rich shale and so is an important target section for shale oil exploration and development. In the Gulong Sag, shale samples from this unit were collected over the full length of the section. The characterization of the environments of deposition (EOD) of K 2 qn 1 was improved by utilizing lithological characteristics, thin section observations, elemental compositions, and organic carbon concentrations. Combined with the normalization coefficients proposed in this paper, an organic matter correlation model was established to elucidate the factors that influence organic matter enrichment. From the bottom to the top of K 2 qn 1 , the lake depth gradually becomes shallower, the primary productivity first decreases and then increases, the reducing conditions become stronger and then weaker, the water salinity gradually decreases, the climate first becomes semi-humid and then warm and humid, and the input of terrigenous debris first decreases and then increases. A major marine transgression at the base of the K 2 qn 1 's brought in nutrients to increase primary productivity, and the density-stratified reducing environment preserved and enriched organic matter. High primary productivity occurred during the middle of the deposition of the K 2 qn 1 , while terrigenous input is low. Organic matter is preserved in reduced deep lake environments, resulting in organic matter-rich black shale. The lake became shallower, and the salinity decreased in the upper part of K 2 qn 1 . Benthic organisms rapidly multiplied, consuming large amounts of oxygen and destroying the previously depositional environment, resulting in a reducing environment disturbed by benthic organisms with poor preservation conditions and the lowest organic matter content.

Abstract:The controlling factors of organic-rich shale accumulation is essential for the exploration and development of shale oil and gas resources. The sedimentary environment plays a vital role in the formation of organic-rich sediments in lacustrine facies. This article unravels the mineralogy, geochemistry, and paleoenvironmental evolution during the deposition of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation (Es3L). It discusses the effects of paleoclimate, paleosalinity, paleoredox conditions, paleowater depth, and paleoproductivity on organic matter (OM) enrichment. Finally, the OM enrichment model was established. The results show that the mineralogical compositions are mainly composed of calcite (avg. 40.13%), quartz (avg. 21.64%) and clay minerals (avg. 24.07%), accompanied by dolomite (avg. 7.07%), feldspar (avg. 6.36%) and pyrite (avg. 2.95%). The Es3L shale has a high abundance of OM, with total organic carbon (TOC) ranging from 1.07% to 5.12%. The organic matter type is mainly composed of type Ⅰ-Ⅱ1 kerogen, which is generally considered a good-quality source rock. The source of OM is a mixture of lower bacteria, algae, and plants. During the early sedimentary period, the paleoclimate was dry and cold, with high salinity, intense reducibility, and relatively low productivity. During the late sedimentary period, the climate became warmer and more humid. As a result, the salinity decreased to a level that was suitable for biological reproduction, and productivity increased gradually due to the input of terrigenous plants. Paleosalinity and paleoclimate determined the environment of the sedimentary period, in addition, paleoproductivity and paleoredox condition indicated the formation and preservation conditions of OM. The warm and humid climate, brackish water, suitable reduction conditions and high productivity are the favorable conditions for the generation and preservation of organic matter. The research results may have implications for the genetic mechanisms of organic matter accumulation. They will provide theoretical and technical insights into the exploration and development of shale oil.

Abstract:The Permian Capitanian-Changhsingian black shale formed in intra-platform basins are the major source rocks in Southwest China. However, the depositional conditions and organic matter accumulation of these black shales are not well understood. In this study, geochemical characteristics comprise TOC, major, trace and REEs from sixty-two samples from the studied outcrop in Northern Nanpanjiang Basin, Southwest China are systematically investigated to determine silicon source, paleo-ocean productivity, and paleo-redox conditions to reveal their influence on organic matter enrichment under 3rd-order sequence. The Capitanian-Changhsingian black shale in the study area is the result of the combined effects of active extensional activity, high paleo-productivity maintained by volcanic activity, and dysoxic and anoxic conditions represented by biological extinction events. There are differences in the factors controlling organic matter accumulation in black shale at different stages. The controlling factors for the organic enrichment during Capitanian (SQ2) are the rapidly deepening water mass of extensional rifts and the high productivity induced by volcanic ash in the igneous provinces, as well as the global anoxic event represented by "negative carbon isotope shift." The controlling factors during Changhsingian are the deepening of water mass under the reactivation of extensional rifts, resulting in a dysoxic environment, and the high productivity maintained by volcanic activity in South China. The Wuchiapingian black shale was formed under dysoxic conditions under the stagnation of extensional activity, and intermittent volcanic activity in South China maintained the high paleo-productivity level of the Wuchiapingian stage.

Abstract:The Middle Permian Lucaogou Formation is the source rock and the main oil shale producing formation in the southeastern Junggar Basin. This study focused on the Lucaogou Formation exposed in two outcrop sections on the northern flank of the Bogda Mountain, namely the Jingjingzigou and Dalongkou sections. Here, we present integrated analysis of the sedimentology, major and trace elements, mineral components and total organic carbon contents. The paleo-environment was reconstructed including provenance, redox conditions, paleo-salinity, chemical weathering intensity and primary organic matter productivity. The results showed that the upper and lower units were deposited in distinct depositional environments with different organic matter accumulation mechanisms. The lower unit was characterized by low lake level, dry climate, fresh-brackish and well-oxygenated water. While during the deposition of the upper unit the lake level rose, climate turned wetter and the bottom water became less oxidized and much saltier. The mechanism of the organic matter accumulation is different for these two units. The preserved organic matters were mainly controlled by the primary productivity in the lower unit and by the redox conditions in the upper unit.

Abstract:The black shale developed in the first section of the Niutitang formation (ε ) is one of the most important shale gas reservoirs in western Hubei, and its geological characteristics have been sufficiently studied by many predecessors. However, there are still three aspects that need further research: the origin of silicon, the discrimination of the euxinic sulfuretted and the anoxic ferruginous conditions, and the main controlling factors of organic matter enrichment. Based on geochemical data from well ZD1 located in the city of Yichang in western Hubei, first, the geochemical characteristics of ε are analyzed, then the provenance, depositional site, and paleoenvironment evolution are discussed, and finally, the main controlling factor of organic matter enrichment is revealed. The results show that ε can be divided into two units, organic-rich shales (ORS) and organic-lean shales (OLS), which have average total organic carbon contents of 4.21 and 0.84%, respectively. Additionally, the ORS is characterized by high contents of SiO, U, V, Ni, Zn, and Cu and left-inclining types of rare earth element distribution curves. ε is located in a passive continental margin with a material source mainly from mixed felsic and mafic rocks. Compared with the OLS, the content of biological quartz is much greater, and the terrigenous input is less in the ORS. The paleoclimate is cold and humid with low salinity in the ORS, whereas it is hot and dry with high salinity in the OLS. ε is deposited in a semistagnant basin, and the ORS shows a relatively lower stagnant degree with euxinic to anoxic conditions and moderate to high paleoproductivity, while the OLS shows a high stagnant degree with suboxic to oxic conditions and lower paleoproductivity. The redox conditions are the main controlling factors affecting organic matter enrichment. The environmental evolution model with three stages shows that there is a good causal relationship between redox conditions, paleoproductivity, and sea level fluctuation. The black carbonaceous siliceous in the lower part of the ORS with a thickness of approximately 40 m is the most favorable layer, which will provide a theoretical basis for further shale gas exploration of ε in the western Hubei.

Abstract:Black shale deposited in the transitional period from the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian is the most important source rock and shale gas reservoir in the Yangtze region of South China. However, the source of these sediments is still controversial. In this paper, the changes in total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur (TS), organic carbon isotopes (δ13Corg), biomarkers, trace elements, and rare earth elements in the Ordovician–Silurian boundary strata of the XK-1 well in northern Guizhou Province, South China, have been systematically studied. The paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic conditions of the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian and their relationship with organic matter enrichment in the Upper Yangtze Platform have been reconstructed. The distribution of biomarkers reflects that the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian shale was deposited in the marine environment and was highly contributed by marine plankton/algae and microorganisms. Paleoclimatic proxies (Sr/Cu, δ13Corg) show that the global climate system experienced significant changes from a warm-humid climate to a brief period of cold-dry climate and then back to a warm-humid climate during the Ordovician–Silurian transition. This warm and humid climate condition helps to improve the biological productivity within the photic zone of the water column during deposition. In addition, the low oxygen (reduction) conditions during the deposition of the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian deposits are characterized by low Pr/Ph values (0.39–0.79) and relatively high elemental ratios of V/Ni (1.40–5.77) and V/(V + Ni) (0.58–0.85). This paleoredox condition contributes to the preservation of organic matter during deposition of the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian deposits. Therefore, it is demonstrated that the climate and ocean fluctuated greatly during the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian transition period, and this fluctuation provided necessary control factors for marine anoxia, primary productivity, and subsequent organic-rich black shale deposition in the Upper Yangtze region during the Late Ordovician and Early Silurian intervals.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In the Carboniferous–Permian period, several organic-rich black shales were deposited in a marine–continental transitional environment in the Linfen area on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin. Integrated sedimentological and organic geochemical analyses are performed on an outcrop in order to clarify the relationship between paleoenvironment and organic matter accumulation. The results of this study show that the marine–continental transitional strata of the Upper Carboniferous Benxi Formation to Lower Permian Taiyuan and Shanxi Formation exposed in the Linfen area are composed of sandstone, shale, coal, and limestone. Total organic carbon (TOC) contents of the studied samples were mainly distributed in the range of 0.59%–35.4%, with an average of 7.32%. From Benxi Formation to Shanxi formation, the humidity gradually increased, and the climate gradually changed from hot and humid to warm and humid during Carboniferous to Permian. The deposition of the Shanxi Formation ended with the climate returning to hot and humid, having an oxic-suboxic conditions and a high paleoproductivity. Paleoredox conditions and paleoproductivity are the two vital factors controlling the formation of organic matter in black shales. The transitional environment characterized by oxic-suboxic, relatively high deposition rate, and various source of organic matter, although different from the marine environment, provides a good material basis for the deposition of organic-rich shales.

Abstract:Due to global geological events and differences in regional sedimentary environments, marine shale reservoirs of Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in Eastern and Southern Sichuan Basin exhibit significant heterogeneity in organic matter content and mineral composition. In order to reveal the influence of paleoenvironment evolution on reservoir heterogeneity, key geochemical indicators of elements were used to reconstruct the sedimentary environment of marine shale in Eastern and Southern Sichuan Basin. The influence mechanism of paleoenvironment on organic matter content and mineral components was also explored. The results indicate that the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in the Southern and Eastern Sichuan Basin can be divided into two third-order sequences (Sq 1 and Sq 2). Each third-order sequence is divided into a transgressive system tract (TST) and a highstand system tract (HST). The average TOC content in the Eastern Sichuan Basin is the highest during the TST1 period with reaching 4.2%, while reached its maximum at 3.9% during the TST2 period in the Southern Sichuan Basin. Due to the influence of high paleo-productivity, the organic matter accumulation and quartz content in the eastern Sichuan region were higher than those in the southern Sichuan region from the TST1 to the middle TST2 period. However, the organic matter accumulation and quartz content in the late TST2 period were lower than those in the southern Sichuan region due to the dilution of terrestrial debris. During the HST2 period, due to the influence of higher paleo-productivity, clay adsorption and preservation condition, the TOC content in the eastern Sichuan region slightly increased in the early stage. At the same time, the marine shale in the southern Sichuan region has a high content of quartz minerals and a low content of clay minerals due to strong weathering intensity and input of coarse-grained debris (silt-size quartz).

Abstract:A comprehensive study of the lithology, mineralogy, major element and trace element geochemistry of the organic-rich shales in the Lower-Middle Cambrian Niutitang and Wunitang Formations in South China was performed to assess the depositional environments and the mechanisms for organic matter enrichment. Results show that the Lower Cambrian Niutitang shales were mainly deposited under anoxic conditions with high paleo-productivity, while the overlying Wunitang shales were deposited under dysoxic conditions with lower paleo-productivity. Both these shales were deposited in a moderately restricted deep-water basin. This paleogeographic setting was conducive to limited water interchange between the outer shelf and open ocean, resulting in a high flux of nutrients from shelf upwelling. These nutrients were produced from upwelling and hydrothermal vents and were carried by oceanic currents, enhancing blooms of primary producers within the surface waters. Organic matter enrichment of the Niutitang and Wunitang shales was mainly controlled by redox conditions and paleo-productivity. The intermittent renewal of connections to open ocean water during sea level rise weakened the restricted conditions in the depositional area, which significantly accelerated the consumption of organic matter.

Abstract:The Late Cretaceous Nenjiang Formation in the Songliao Basin presents a unique setting to examine how climate change and sea-level rise influenced organic matter accumulation. This study combines TOC analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, GC–MS, GC–MS-MS, and elemental geochemistry on core samples from two wells to assess organic matter deposition before and after transgressive events. TOC values range from 0.18 to 14.63 wt%, with significant variations in hydrocarbon potential and thermal maturity. Periodic warm and cool climates triggered intermittent seawater intrusions that created anoxic conditions conducive to marine diatom and lacustrine dinoflagellate proliferation. Extended warm periods, however, suppressed dinoflagellate development and reduced paleo-productivity. The activity of methanogenic bacteria further contributed to the degradation of sedimentary organic matter, hindering its accumulation. While warm climates facilitated flood events that transported terrigenous nutrients, enhancing dinoflagellate blooms and expanding the oxygen minimum zone. These findings highlight the bio-environmental interactions that governed organic matter accumulation during transgressions, offering insights for exploration in similar sedimentary environments.

Abstract:Based on organic carbon content measurement, kerogen microscopic examination, and the analysis of source rock maturity and major/trace elements, this study restores the sedimentary paleoenvironment of the Ying 4 Member in the southern Shuangcheng area, Songliao Basin, and determines the main controlling factors of the region's organic matter enrichment. The results indicate that the organic carbon content of the source rock in the study area is 0.51%–8.29%, with a mean value of 2.48%. The average total organic carbon (TOC) value of the source rock reaches 2.35%, and the kerogen type index (KTI) is mainly distributed between 1.6 and 39.5, with an average of 21.5. The organic matter type is II2. The rock core test shows that the vitrinite reflectance (Ro) is 0.83%–0.97%, with an average of 0.90%, demonstrating that the source rock in the study area has entered the peak hydrocarbon-generation stage. During the deposition of Ying 4 Member, the paleoclimate was warm and humid, and the corresponding sedimentary paleoenvironment was brackish water, having a typical reducing condition with low oxygen content and good primary productivity. In addition, intense volcanic activity have occurred, and the generated volcanic ash and hydrothermal fluids have transported substantial nutrients to the lake basin, promoting the development of algae in the water. The crossplot of the TOC content of dark shale against multiple paleoenvironment indexes shows that the organic matter enrichment in the Ying 4 Member is mainly controlled by paleoproductivity and the paleoclimate, but not associated with redox conditions and paleosalinity. Only warm conditions with high paleoproductivity can lead to organic matter enrichment, and regional volcanic activity plays a significant role in increasing paleoproductivity. Overall, the organic matter enrichment in the study area can be described by the productivity model.

Abstract:Mechanism of the organic matter (OM) accumulation in the Middle Permian Gufeng Formation shale in South China is lack of constraints, which restricts the source rock evaluations and shale gas explorations. To decipher the OM accumulation of the Gufeng Formation, geological and geochemical results related to paleo-environmental variations are presented from the shelf Putaoling section in South China. The OM accumulation in the Gufeng Formation is vertically heterogeneous, shown by a medium total organic carbon (TOC) content (2.3%) in the lower member and a high TOC content (9.6%) in the upper member. The organic-rich shales of the Gufeng Formation are deposited in a complex paleo-environment with restrained water conditions, a warm and humid paleoclimate, a relatively strong chemical weathering, significant hydrothermal activities, a high primary productivity, fluctuating redox conditions, and a relatively high sedimentary rate. Compared to the lower member deposited under anoxic conditions, the upper member is formed in a dominantly euxinic environment with higher productivities. The seawater deoxygenation and the upward-increasing productivity jointly lead to the vertical heterogeneity of the OM accumulation in the Gufeng Formation. Thus, an 'integrated model' for the OM accumulation in the Gufeng Formation is established, and which adds to our knowledge that no a single factor or model can explain the OM accumulation in all sedimentary environments.

Abstract:The shale from the Carboniferous and Permian Taiyuan–Shanxi Formation in Kaiping syncline has good prospects for shale gas exploration and development. To understand the evolutionary characteristics of the sedimentary environment in this area and their relationships with organic matter enrichment. Shale samples from the Taiyuan-Shanxi in Well KP1 were selected as research objects, followed by organic geochemical research, elemental geochemical analysis, and numerical analysis. The results show that the sedimentary period of the Shanxi Formation was marked by a medium productivity level. The sedimentary water column was composed of brackish water and seawater deposits in an anoxic reduction environment. The Taiyuan Formation shale was characterized by a medium level of paleoproductivity. The sedimentary water column was composed of brackish water deposits in an anoxic reduction environment. According to the linear correlation analysis of paleoenvironmental conditions and TOC content. This study suggests that ancient water salinity is the main factor controlling the enrichment of organic matter in the sedimentary stage of the Taiyuan-Shanxi Formation.

Abstract:The Songliao Basin was a big lake during the mid-Cretaceous,where dark mudstones and shales of the Qingshankou Formation were distributed in the basin.The dark mudstones and shales in the Member 1 of the Qingshankou Formation are of high organic carbon and low diasteranes contents.Organic geochemical characteristics are illustrated by biomarkers of 28-,30-bisnorhopane and gammacerane,and positive excursion of kerogen isotopes.It is suggested that the dark mudstones and shales in the Member 1 of the Qingshankou Formation are the products of lake anoxic event in the extreme greenhouse climate period.Based on the study of biostratigraphy and anoxic event-stratigraphy,we propose that the Qingshankou Formation may correspond to the oceanic anoxic event at the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary in the Cretaceous,and the age of the Qingshankou Formation in the Songliao Basin is the Late Cenomanian to the Early Turonian.

Abstract:The shales of the Taiyuan Formation and Shanxi Formation in the North China Basin have good prospects for shale gas exploration and development. In this study, Well KP1 at the northern margin of the North China Basin was used as the research object for rock mineral, organic geochemical, and elemental geochemical analyses. The results show that brittle minerals in the shales of the Taiyuan Formation and Shanxi Formation are relatively rare ( 50%). The average TOC content is 3.68%. The organic matter is mainly mixed and sapropelic. The source rocks of the Taiyuan Formation and Shanxi Formation are mainly felsic, and the tectonic background lies in the continental island arc area. The primary variables that influenced the enrichment of organic materials during the sedimentary stage of the Taiyuan Formation were paleosalinity and paleoproductivity. Paleosalinity acted as the primary regulator of organic matter enrichment during the sedimentary stage of the Shanxi Formation.

Abstract:The marine–continental transitional shale of the Upper Permian Longtan Formation in northern Guizhou is an important source rock in the upper Yangtze region of China, and it holds significant potential for the exploration of shale gas. To investigate the correlation between sedimentary conditions and the accumulation of organic matters in marine–continental transitional shale, this paper performed an extensive analysis using organic geochemical testing, organic petrology examination, a cross-section polisher–scanning electron microscope (CP-SEM), and geochemical analysis. The Jinsha and Dafang drilling cores were selected as the research subjects. The results showed that the TOC of the Longtan Formation in the study area was relatively high, and the TOC content of the tidal flat–lagoon environment (average of 8.37%) was significantly higher than that of the delta samples (average of 2.77%). The high content of Al2O3 (average of 17.41% in DC-1, average of 16.53% in JC-1) indicated strong terrigenous detrital input. The proxies indicated that the Longtan Formation shale in northern Guizhou was deposited in a climate that was both warm and humid, with oxic–dysoxic sedimentary water characterized by high biological productivity and a rapid sedimentation rate. The organic-rich shales during the marine and continental transitional phases were affected by various factors, including the paleo-climate, water redox properties, paleo-productivity, sedimentation rate, and other variables, which directly or indirectly impacted the availability, burial, and preservation of organic matter.

Abstract:The sedimentary environment is paramount in dictating depositional processes, ecological settings, and hydrodynamic conditions, all of which are pivotal to the aggregation of organic-rich sediments. A synergistic interplay is observed among the paleosedimentary environment, lithofacies, and enrichment of shale oil. Utilizing an analysis of elemental geochemistry and organic geochemical parameters-such as total organic carbon (TOC) content-this study endeavors to identify the predominant factors that govern the enrichment of organic matter (OM). It reconstructs the evolutionary trajectory of the paleosedimentary environment and introduces a dynamic model for shale oil enrichment within the Jurassic Lianggaoshan Formation of the Sichuan Basin. The results indicate that the Lianggaoshan Formation shale can be categorized into five lithological types, including high TOC felsic-rich shale (A), moderate TOC felsic-rich shale (B), moderate TOC felsic-rich mudstone (C), low TOC felsic-rich shale (D), and low TOC felsic-rich mudstone (E), and high TOC felsic-rich shale has the highest TOC and oil content. The shales of the Lianggaoshan Formation were deposited in an environment characterized by abundant terrestrial input, humid climate, freshwater conditions, reduced oxygen levels, and thriving primary productivity. OM enrichment is mainly controlled by the combination of a humid paleoclimate, high primary productivity, and other factors. The paleoenvironment deposited by lithofacies A coincides with the paleoenvironment conducive to OM enrichment, which makes lithofacies A become the dominant lithofacies for shale oil enrichment. Additionally, the sedimentary environment evolution characteristics and shale oil enrichment model of the Lianggaoshan Formation were established based on geochemical parameters. The paleosedimentary environment of the Lianggaoshan Formation from bottom to top is more and more unfavorable. The No.1 submember of the Lianggaoshan Formation is the most potential shale submember for shale oil exploration due to the paleosedimentary environment that promoted the deposition of lithofacies A and OM enrichment.

Abstract:Marine organic-rich shale is widely distributed in the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation (WF-F) and Silurian Longmaxi Formation (LMX-F), making it an important target for shale gas exploration and development. In order to clarify the paleoenvironment evolution characteristics and the effect of depositional environment on organic matter (OM) accumulation of the marine shale in the Wufeng and Longmaxi Formations, a series of geochemical and petrological experiments were carried out, including TOC, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, XRD, and major and trace element analyses. Research results show that based on the variation characteristics of TOC, mineral composition, and paleoenvironment evolution characteristics, four units can be identified from bottom to top: Wufeng Formation (WF-F), Lower Longmaxi Formation (L-LMX-F), Middle Longmaxi Formation (M-LMX-F) and Upper Longmaxi Formation (U-LMX-F). The high-quality marine shale developed in WF-F and LMX-F in the Zigong area (TOC: 0.65–4.56%, avg. 2.15%) contains type I kerogen (kerogen type index: 86.0–98.3, avg. 92.7) and OM in mature stage (average of Rb and Tmax are 2.94%, 646 °C, respectively). Clay minerals (avg. 42.5%) and quartz (avg. 37.7%) dominate the mineral compositions, with subordinated dolomite (avg. 6.3%), feldspar (avg. 6.0%), calcite (avg. 4.0%), and pyrite (avg. 3.5%). Paleoenvironment indicators suggest that during the sedimentary period of WF-F and L-LMX-F, the paleoclimate condition was humid; the weathering condition, paleosalinity, and redox conditions were the strongest; and there was a relatively high level of paleoproductivity and a relatively low level of terrigenous detritus influx. However, during the period of M-LMX-F and U-LMX-F, the climate gradually changed from warm and humid to hot and dry; the intensity of weathering conditions, paleosalinity, and redox conditions was relatively reduced; terrigenous detritus influx increased; and the paleoproductivity decreased. Relationships between TOC and paleoclimate condition, paleosalinity, redox condition, paleoproductivity, and terrigenous detritus influx suggest that redox condition is most important controlling factor for OM enrichment. A combination of anoxic bottom water conditions and high primary productivity and a relatively low terrigenous input resulted in the enrichment of OM in the WF-F and L-LMX-F, making it a potential exploration and development target. The research can provide scientific guidance for the selection of potential shale gas development targets in the Zigong area.

Abstract:Eocene lacustrine organic-rich shales, mudstones and shales in the middle member of Liushagang Formation (designated as LS2) are the most important source rocks in the Beibuwan Basin located in the northwest of the South China Sea. In this study, we explored the mechanisms responsible for the accumulation of organic matter in source rocks from LS2 of Weixinan Sag by investigating the paleoclimate, paleoredox, paleoproductivity and lithological characteristics of the parent rocks using biomarkers and elemental geochemistry data. Based on our analytical data, the deposition of the source rocks from LS2 occurred in a warm, humid paleoclimate with moderate chemical weathering, as indicated by CIA indexes and Sr/Cu ratios. The Sr/Ba ratios and gammacerane indexes indicated that the source rocks from LS2 were deposited in a freshwater paleolake. The Corg/P ratios and Redox Sensitive Elements (RSEs) -TOC bivariate diagrams demonstrated that the organic-rich shales and mudstones/shales deposited under anoxic and oxic-suboxic conditions, respectively. The levels of TOC, copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and C30 4-methylsterance index in the organic-rich shales were higher than those of the mudstones and shales, indicating greater algae bloom and paleoproductivity during the deposition of the organic-rich shales compared to during the sedimentation of the mudstones and shales. Combined with La/Yb-∑REE, SiO2–TiO2, Al2O3/TiO2, Nb/Ta and Cr/Co ratios, it is considered that the parent rocks of the organic-rich shales were granite of relatively intermediate lithological compositions, with greater levels of nutrients such as phosphorus (P), Mo, Cu, compared to those of the mudstones and shales. Large-scale decomposition of dead algae led to oxygen depletion, which created favorable conditions for the preservation of organic matter and the release of P from the sediments to water. The increased content of P in water subsequently aggravated algal blooms. Such a positive feedback loop was conducive to the formation of organic-rich shales. The inter-relationships of algal blooms (controlled by P), paleoproductivity and paleoredox conditions play an important role in the accumulation of organic matter in organic-rich shales from LS2 of Weixinan Sag, Beibuwan Basin.

Abstract:Although previous studies have yielded valuable insights into shale gas reservoirs, a comprehensive understanding of the organic geochemical characteristics and organic matter enrichment of marine-continental transitional shale has yet to be achieved. The Longtan Formation transitional shales were extensively deposited in Southern Anhui Province, South China, during the Late Permian. Our analysis of twenty-two rock samples from one core (Gangdi-1 well) and two outcrops (Daoshanchong outcrop and Changqiao outcrop) revealed that the Longtan Formation shale extracts exhibit a wide range of C11-C35n-alkanes and acyclic isoprenoids, with unimodal, bimodal, and multimodal distributions. The carbon peak ranges from nC15 to nC24, with high quantities of medium-chain n-alkanes (nC22-nC25), indicating that the organic matter in Longtan Formation shale originates from a mixed source of higher plant debris and lower aquatic organisms. Our conclusion is supported by the ternary diagram of C27-C28-C29 regular steranes and the variations of the δ13C values of C15-C32n-alkanes, which is higher than the corresponding value (<1.6‰) of n-alkanes from a single source. Furthermore, thermal maturity proxies based on organic petrography (Ro and Tmax) and biomarkers, such as the ratios of C31 22S/(22S + 22R), C29 20S/(20S + 20R), and C29 ββ/(αα + ββ), suggest that organic matter is in a mature stage of hydrocarbon generation. By analyzing the Pr/Ph ratio and pyrite morphology combined with a plot of total organic carbon (TOC) versus total sulfur (TS) and the Pr/nC17-Ph/nC18 diagram, we speculate that the Longtan Formation shales were chiefly developed in a dysoxic-to-oxic water environment. Finally, we establish depositional models of organic matter enrichment in deltaic and tidal flat-lagoon environments, emphasizing that the abundant mixed-sourced organic matter can significantly enhance primary productivity, and a higher sedimentation rate can distinctly shorten organic matter exposure time in the oxidized water environment, thereby promoting organic matter accumulation in such a setting.
