Abstract:As a vital component of lithium battery, the pole piece is prone to defects during the production process, which adversely affects performance and even causes safety accidents. Therefore, conducting quality inspections for lithium battery pole pieces is crucial. In this research, an optimized region growing algorithm based on 3D point cloud data is proposed to automatically detect pole piece defects. Specifically, a potential defect-focused Harris3D method (DFHarris3D) for keypoint detection and a boundary fine-tuning algorithm (BFT) are introduced. Comparative experimental results prove that our method outperforms others in terms of completeness, accuracy, and robustness. Therefore, this novel non-destructive detection technique demonstrates the potential to accurately segment surface defects in lithium battery pole pieces, which can be integrated into smart factories for fully automated defect detection.
Algorithmic structural segmentation of defective particle systems: a lithium-ion battery study

Abstract:We describe a segmentation algorithm that is able to identify defects (cracks, holes and breakages) in particle systems. This information is used to segment image data into individual particles, where each particle and its defects are identified accordingly. We apply the method to particle systems that appear in Li-ion battery electrodes. First, the algorithm is validated using simulated data from a stochastic 3D microstructure model, where we have full information about defects. This allows us to quantify the accuracy of the segmentation result. Then we show that the algorithm can successfully be applied to tomographic image data from real battery anodes and cathodes, which are composed of particle systems with very different morpohological properties. Finally, we show how the results of the segmentation algorithm can be used for structural analysis.

Abstract:The assessment of welding quality in battery shell production is a crucial aspect of battery production. Battery surface reconstruction can inspect the quality of the weld instead of relying on human inspection. This paper proposes a defect detection method in the small field of view based on 2D pre-processing and an improved-region-growth method. A novel approximation-based, high-precision, and simple operation method for line structure optical plane calibration under small field of view is presented, with a measurement error within 0.01 mm. By pre-processing the line scan 2D images, the defect location distribution is obtained, and then the images near the abnormal points are reconstructed in third dimensional (3D). The proposed method enables the extraction of the morphology, size, and other information of the defects with high accuracy. The results of various defect detection experiments demonstrate the stable and reliable performance of the system. The experimental results of defect recognition rate are over 95.3% for defects above 0.5 mm in diameter, and the inspection time is less than 1/2 of the direct 3D defect inspection. Overall, this method has proven to be highly effective in the assessment of welding quality in new energy battery production.

Abstract:Aiming to address the problems of uneven brightness and small defects of low contrast on the surface of lithium-ion battery electrode (LIBE) coatings, this study proposes a defect detection method that combines background reconstruction with an enhanced Canny algorithm. Firstly, we acquire and pre-process the electrode coating image, considering the characteristics of the electrode coating process and defects. Secondly, background reconstruction and the difference method are introduced to achieve the rough localization of coating defects. Furthermore, the image with potential defects undergoes enhancement through improved Gamma correction, and the PSO-OTSU algorithm with adaptive searching is applied to determine the optimal segmentation. Finally, precise defect detection is accomplished using the improved Canny algorithm and morphological processing. The experimental results show that, compared with the maximum entropy method, the region growth method, and the traditional Canny algorithm, the algorithm in this paper has a higher segmentation accuracy for defects. It better retains defect edge features and provides a more accurate detection effect for defects like scratches, dark spots, bright spots, metal leakage, and decarburization, which are difficult to recognize on the background of coating areas of electrodes. The proposed method is suitable for the online real-time defect detection of LIBE coating defects in actual lithium-ion battery industrial production.

Abstract:In the preparation process of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries, a rigorous manufacturing process demands that the position distances between positive and negative pole-pieces must be kept within a reasonable range of variation. Otherwise, a too small position distance may cause safety problems, such as short circuits and thermal runaway. To inspect the position distances between positive and negative pole-pieces automatically, and to decrease the risk of safety and economic losses during the subsequent use, this paper proposes a method to identify the position distance defects of a cylindrical lithium-ion battery on the base of x-ray digital radiography (DR) images. According to this method, the DR image is firstly enhanced by the GPU-accelerated homomorphic filtering algorithm to intensify its contrast and detailed information. Then through the Shi-Tomasi corner detection algorithm, corners of all the positive and negative pole-pieces are preliminarily detected in a region of interest which is defined in advance. To delete the false corners and find the lost corners, one-dimension region growing and curve-fitting methods are adopted. Finally, the minimum position distance, repeated accuracy and alignment metrics are calculated at the base of the detected corners. The experimental results show that the corner positions of five 26 650 cylindrical lithium-ion batteries with different pole-piece structural characteristics can be effectively identified by the proposed method, which provides a useful approach to filtrate unqualified batteries during the process of manufacture.

Abstract:In the manufacturing process of lithium battery shells, defects often arise due to improper operations, highlighting the importance of effective detection. However, the diverse and complex characteristics of these defects challenge existing algorithms, leading to high missed detection rates, low accuracy, and computational inefficiency. To address these issues, this study introduces HE-Yolov8n, an optimized Yolov8n model. The AKASE module enhances feature representation and improves training accuracy, while the SCCPrecision-GAM module replaces the traditional C2f module, reducing parameters and FLOPs. Additionally, a novel loss function, QIoU, is proposed to refine bounding box accuracy by penalizing low IoU during early training and later optimizing aspect ratios and center points. Experimental results demonstrate that HE-Yolov8n significantly outperforms mainstream models in detecting surface defects. Specifically, in lithium battery shell defect detection, it achieves an mAP50 of 97.0%, representing a 4.6% improvement over Yolov8n. Its parameters and FLOPs are reduced by 18.75% and 8.05%, respectively, while maintaining a detection speed of 132.2 FPS, meeting the real-time requirements of industrial defect detection.

Abstract:Defect-free slot coating is important in the design and manufacturing of lithium-ion-battery electrodes. However, the defect formation in electrode-slot coating is not clearly understood because of the involvement and coupling of many parameters. Here, we investigate the defect formation mechanisms in electrode-slot coating by using numerical and experimental methodologies. Three defects, namely, striped, spotted, and irregular, are observed. The striped defect is related to downstream menisci contraction; however, the spotted and irregular defects are associated with the unstable development of the sawtooth dynamic contact line. In addition, three regions for the capillary number and minimum-thickness-based coating window are found, and the dominant force in each region is clarified. The results indicate that a higher maximum coating speed can be obtained for a lower coating gap, and the maximum coating speed of the underbite die configuration increases by 25.6% compared with that of the normal die configuration.

Abstract:Notorious dendrite growth is the major cause of low coulombic efficiency and safety issues in Li metal batteries, which is highly related to the crystallographic features of Li crystals. Generally, Li dendrites tend to grow on the (110) crystal face with the lowest surface energy. However, the understanding of deposited Li morphology evolution is still unexplored in terms of the changes in the exposure possibility of various Li crystal faces. Herein, we report isotropic Li growth by minimizing the surface energy discrepancy of lithium crystal faces to induce homogeneous Li deposition. Using DFT calculations, the surface energy discrepancy decreased from 0.17 to 0.1 J cm(-2) after manipulation. The yielded dendrite-free Li anode exhibited long-term cycling for 4000 hours at 3 mA cm(-2) for 3 mA h cm(-2) in symmetric cells and exhibited extraordinary performance of up to 10 mA cm(-2) with a capacity of 10 mA h cm(-2). Moreover, 91.5% capacity retention was achieved in LFP full cells cycled at 1C for about 650 times.
An Automatic Defects Detection Scheme for Lithium-ion Battery Electrode Surface

Abstract:This paper presents an automatic flaw inspection scheme for online real-time detection of the defects on the surface of lithium-ion battery electrode (LIBE) in actual industrial production. Firstly, based on the conventional methods of region extraction, ROI (region of LIBE) could be extracted from the captured LIBE original image. Secondly, in order to reduce the influences of uneven illumination and nonuniform thickness of LIBE on the ROI background region, a fast background compensation algorithm is put forward. Furthermore, with the help of the simple threshold segmentation and external rectangle transformation, the potential defect region could be quickly detected and extracted. Finally, an adaptive threshold segmentation algorithm based on gray histogram reconstruction is proposed to inspect the flaws in the extracted potential defect region accurately and rapidly. The experiments have proved the valid effect of the background compensation algorithm in reducing the gray value fluctuation of ROI background region and the well performance of the proposed threshold segmentation algorithm in terms of the defect detection effect and inspection speed, which has verified the effectiveness of this flaw inspection scheme.

Abstract:In order to meet the needs of the detection accuracy and speed of lithium-ion battery chip defects, this article proposes an improved algorithm based on deep learning YOLO5. First,introduce the coordinate attention mechanism (CA) to strengthen the study of the characteristics of the image area of the lithium-ion polar tablet so that the model focuses on the extraction of the characteristics of the polar defects and weakens the effects of complex background on the test results. Further, improve the accuracy of polar defect detection, and use the CIoU loss function to replace the GIoU function, so that the regression process focuses more on high-quality anchor frames and improves the convergence speed, regression accuracy, and robustness of the model. Based on the above experimental results, the two improvements were jointly added to the YOLOv5 model, the mAP was increased by 1.48%, and the detection speed FPS was increased by 2 f/s-1.The YOLOv5-CC algorithm proposed in this article is a lithium-ion with both detection accuracy and practicality.Battery pole defect detection algorithm has high application value.

Abstract:Abstract Surface defects of lithium batteries seriously affect the product quality and may lead to safety risks. In order to accurately identify the surface defects of lithium battery, a novel defect detection approach is proposed based on improved K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and Euclidean clustering segmentation. Firstly, an improved voxel density strategy for KNN is proposed to speed up the effect for point filtering. Then, the improved clustering segmentation strategy is applied to distinguish point clouds with defect features. The outline fitting algorithm based on the least square method is applied to determine geometric features of each surface defect which are used to classify defect types. Furthermore, experimental results show that the proposed surface defect detection method reaches 99.2% accuracy and 35.3-ms average time consumption for data processing. Finally, an industrial application example of lithium battery production is demonstrated, which meets the requirements of industrial application. All these reports exhibited that the industrial visual inspection system with rapid measurement is an effective method and guarantees for accelerating industrial production and manufacturing in the future.

Abstract:Longevity of Li ion batteries strongly depends on the interaction of transporting Li ions in electrode crystals with defects. However, detailed interactions between the Li ion flux and structural defects in the host crystal remain obscure due to the transient nature of such interactions. Here, by in situ transmission electron microscopy and density function theory calculations, we reveal how the diffusion pathways and transport kinetics of a Li ion can be affected by planar defects in a tungsten trioxide lattice. We uncover that changes in charge distribution and lattice spacing along the planar defects disrupt the continuity of ion conduction channels and dramatically increase the energy barrier of Li diffusion, thus, arresting Li ions at the defect sites and twisting the lithiation front. The atomic-scale understanding holds critical implications for rational interface design in solid-state batteries and solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:Despite significant progress in recycling spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), nondestructive, direct recycling methods still face untenable discrepancies in multiple cathode chemistries, which primarily originate from a variety of structure stabilities during the recycling process. Through systematic investigation of the microstructure evolution during the relithiation treatment, we observed the inevitably induced defects and Li/Mn disordering in the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode, contributing to the sluggish Li+ transport and irreversible capacity loss. Employing a defect engineering approach to achieve twin boundaries and preferred grain orientation, we show the regenerated cathodes demonstrate a substantial enhancement of Li+ diffusion and cycling stability, retaining 97.4% capacity after 100 cycles and 87.96% after 200 cycles at C/3. This work not only elaborates on a systematic investigation of defect inducement and structural restoration mechanism but also provides an effective approach to directly recycle high-voltage spinel-type cathodes, contributing to the sustainability of next-generation LIBs.

Abstract:Cut surface quality of electrodes' affect lithium-ion battery performance. Current uses of mechanical cutting require expensive tooling. Furthermore, tool wears out over time so that it results in process instability and poor cut quality. This may cause an internal short circuit and significant heat generation. These problems can be solved by using a laser cutting technique since it has many advantages, such as no tool wear, high energy concentration, fast processing speed, very narrow heat affected zone, applicability to nearly all materials, and flexibility of laser power. Understanding physical phenomena provides significant advantages to fully utilize the remote laser cutting of electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, a 3D mathematical model of three-dimensional self-consistent remote laser cutting is developed for cathode (LiCoO2-coated aluminum) of lithium-ion batteries. Characteristics of the remote laser cutting of cathodes, liquid/vapor (L/V) interface geometry, and melt pool flow are investigated by computational analysis at the laser power of 150 W and scanning speed of 5000 mm s−1. Experimental results validate the proposed computational model and show in good agreement with computationally observed results in terms of the kerf width and aluminum composition changes along the vertical line of the cut surface.

Abstract:<p>Lithium-ion batteries are widely applied to electric power vehicle and other modern-life applications, such that electrode structure stability and mechanical integrity is of major regarding not only lithium-ion safety aspect but also performance. To enable understanding of meso mechanism of electrode components triggered by electrode tensile failure, a 2D discrete element method (DEM) with an additional bond model is proposed, which comprises the application of a proper contact and bond model to capture a uniaxial tensile mechanics. The simulations are able to proving detailed meso information about the changes in electrode structure as well as the mechanical performance of the binder. The numerical results are analyzed and prove to be in good agreement with experimental data. The model improves understanding of failure behavior of electrodes at meso scale and constitutes a valuable physical and mechanical basis for future development of safety design tools for the flexible batteries.</p>

Abstract:The manufacturing of commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) involves a number of sophisticated production processes. Various cell defects can be induced, and, depending on their structural and chemical characteristics, they could lead to acute failure and/ or chronic degradation. Although tremendous efforts have been devoted to develop a robust quality control (QC) procedure, the functional role of the cell defects is not well understood. Here, we address this question through a systematic experimental study of commercial 186 50-type LIBs that have failed the QC inspection due to a self-discharging effect. We identify and recover the defective regions from the cell and conduct a comprehensive investigation from the chemical, structural, and morphological perspectives. Our results reveal how the structural defects affect the cell performance, which is highly important to industry-scale battery production.
Optimization of Drying Process of Lithium Battery Pole Piece Based on Simulation Technology

Abstract:After electrode pulping and coating of lithium battery, it is necessary to dry the pole pieces, but there is a contradiction between drying efficiency and drying quality. In the process of rapid drying, the binder components are easy to migrate, which reduces the adhesion of the pole pieces, leading to the increase of internal resistance of the pole pieces and subsequent manufacturing defects. Therefore, this paper puts forward an optimization scheme of pole piece efficient drying process. Firstly, based on the analysis of the transfer process of heat and solvent quality in the drying process, the calculation method of drying curve is put forward, and the optimal design criteria of drying parameters are established. Furthermore, a multiphase flow and heat transfer model of drying process is constructed, and the oven structure and parameters are optimized based on multiphase flow simulation. The experimental results of drying process optimization of positive pole pieces show that the mass production speed of 51 Ah positive pole is increased by 25% after process optimization. The adhesion of the A surface of the pole piece is increased by 6.5%, and the difference between the A and B surfaces is decreased by 91%. The average resistance of the pole piece decreases by 12%, which meets the high requirements for the quality and efficiency of pole piece drying for automotive lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Defect engineering on electrode materials is considered an effective approach to improve the electrochemical performance of batteries since the presence of a variety of defects with different dimensions may promote ion diffusion and provide extra storage sites. However, manipulating defects and obtaining an in-depth understanding of their role in electrode materials remain challenging. Here, we deliberately introduce a considerable number of twin boundaries into spinel cathodes by adjusting the synthesis conditions. Through high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and neutron diffraction, the detailed structures of the twin boundary defects are clarified, and the formation of twin boundary defects is attributed to agminated lithium atoms occupying the Mn sites around the twin boundary. In combination with electrochemical experiments and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the presence of twin boundaries in the spinel cathode enables fast lithium-ion diffusion, leading to excellent fast charging performance, namely, 75% and 58% capacity retention at 5 C and 10 C, respectively. These findings demonstrate a simple and effective approach for fabricating fast-charging cathodes through the use of defect engineering.
Linking the Defects to the Formation and Growth of Li Dendrite in All‐Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract:The nucleation and growth of Li metal during deposition and the associated dendrite penetration are the critical and fundamental issues influencing the safety and power density of solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLBs). However, investigations on Li metal deposition/dissolution especially the formation and growth of Li dendrites and their determining factors in the all-solid-state electrochemical systems are still lacking. In this work, in situ observations of the Li metal growth process, and defects induced heterogeneous deposition under cathodic load, are reported. By exploiting in situ scanning electron microscopy, along with electrochemical analytical approaches, the spatial distribution and morphological evolution of the deposited Li at the electrode|solid electrolyte interface are obtained and discussed. This investigation reveals that the formation of lithium whiskers is decided by the local Li ion flux and the deposition active sites, which are closely dependent on the content and types of defects in the polycrystalline electrolyte. Moreover, the defect regions exhibit faster Li deposition kinetics and higher nucleation tendency. These results can advance the fundamental understanding of the Li penetration mechanism in SSLBs.
