Abstract:Bismuth oxybromide/oxyiodide (Bi4O5BrxI2-x) photocatalysts were successfully fabricated using a facile homogeneous precipitation method at room temperature. The obtained Bi4O5BrxI2-x demonstrated highly enhanced visible-light performances compared with Bi4O5Br2 and Bi4O5I2. The poducts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The DRS analysis shows that the band gap structures of Bi4O5BrxI2-x have been gradually modulated by changing the Br/I molar ratio. The obtained Bi4O5BrxI2-x samples have exhibited efficient photocatalytic activities in decomposing resorcinol, o-phenylphenol, and 4-tert-butylphenol. The Br/I molar ratio has great influence on the activity of the photocatalysts, and Bi4O5Br0.6I1.4 exhibited the best activity which was about 2.77 and 1.80 times higher than that of Bi4O5Br2 and Bi4O5I2, respectively. The degradation intermediates were identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS), and the possible degradation pathway of resorcinol over Bi4O5BrxI2-x photocatalysts was proposed. The strong visible light absorption, high charge separation efficiency, and proper band potentials should be responsible for the excellent activity of Bi4O5BrxI2-x photocatalyst. Trapping experiments using radical scavengers confirmed the generation of O2-, OH, and h+, but only O2- and h+ have played the chief role in removing organic pollutants from water.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is an emerging technique for the remediation of refractory organic contaminants. Herein, a novel dual Z-scheme Bi/BiOI-Bi2O3-C3N4 heterojunctions were constructed through a calcining process following with I- etching and UV-reduction processes. Various analytical technologies were adopted to characterize the materials. As a result, the Bi-0 decorated composite presented improved visible-light-response and rapid charge transfer. Due to the synergy of Bi-0 and dual Z-scheme heterostructures, a remarkable photocatalytic performance toward phenol degradation was achieved with the highest degradation efficiency of 93.2% and rate constant of 0.0161 min(-1) over the optimal composite within 75 min of visible light irradiation. Interestingly, the concen-tration of the yielded benzoquinone considerably decreased with the introduction of C3N4. Trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests indicated that h(+), O-2(center dot-), (OH)-O-center dot and e(-) contributed to phenol remediation, and h(+) and O-2(center dot-) were the crucial species toward phenol degradation. Furthermore, outstanding stability was obtained only with a decline of 3.8% after 4 cycles. A reasonable charge transfer mechanism was also proposed. This work provides a new route for in situ construction of Bi-0 decorated dual Z-scheme heterojunction for phenolic compounds degradation.
High-performance visible-light responsive BiPO4@ZnWO4 photocatalyst for enhancing photodegradation characteristics

Abstract:The rational construction of heterostructures plays a pivotal role in enhancing both the separation of photogenerated carriers in semiconductors and the photocatalytic activity. This paper successfully constructs a novel BiPO 4 @ZnWO 4 p-n type heterojunction photocatalyst by hydrothermal and ultrasonic stirring methods. The BiPO 4 @ZnWO 4 heterojunction exhibits outstanding photocatalytic performance, achieving a degradation efficiency of 99% for rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light illumination in just 40 min. Furthermore, its photocatalytic reaction rate constant is 3.9 and 96.51 times higher than that of pure ZnWO 4 and BiPO 4 , respectively. Electrochemical characterization demonstrates a more robust photocurrent response and lower resistance in the composite sample, facilitating efficient transport of photogenerated carriers. In addition, the 20% BiPO 4 @ZnWO 4 heterojunction also exhibits desirable photodegradation stability, maintaining a RhB removal rate above 80% even after 5 cycles. Within the context of the photocatalytic reaction system, the superoxide radical (·O 2 − ) plays a key role, succeeded by the hydroxyl radical (·OH) and the photoinduced hole (h + ). This paper provides a feasible p-n type heterojunction photocatalyst for the treatment of dyeing wastewater.

Abstract:S-scheme heterostructure can facilitate the separation of carriers while maintain outstanding redox capacity. A series of ternary Bi7O9I3/g-C3N4/Bi3O4Cl photocatalytic system was triumphantly synthesized via oil bath method in this work and used in photocatalytic degradation of phenol. The optimal TOC removal rate reached up to 93.57% under illumination for 160 min, which was slightly lower than phenol photodegradation (about 100%, 100 min). Correspondingly, the apparent rate constants for the decay of phenol are determined to be 0.0211 min-1. The experiment of free radical capture indicated that ·OH and ·O2- were the major oxidizing substances to degrade phenol. The products of phenol photodegradation were identified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and a possible degradation pathway was proposed. The characterization analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that dual S-scheme charge migration was generated at the interface of Bi7O9I3, g-C3N4 and Bi3O4Cl, contributing to an efficient separation of light-excited carriers. In the field of environmental remediation, the discovery of this work could open up promising vistas for designing bismuth-based ternary heterostructures with application potentiality.

Abstract:Heterostructured Bi2O2CO3/Bi2O4 photocatalysts were fabricated by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method, in which melem served as the sacrificial reagent to supply carbonate anions. The as-synthesized Bi2O2CO3/Bi2O4 heterojunction catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. The XRD patterns of Bi2O2CO3/Bi2O4 catalysts showed the distinctive peaks of Bi2O2CO3 and Bi2O4. The SEM and TEM results showed that the pure Bi2O2CO3 possessed large plate morphology, while Bi2O4 were composed of various nanorods and particles. As for Bi2O2CO3/Bi2O4 heterojunction, it was obviously observed that Bi2O4 nanorods and particles were grown on the surfaces of Bi2O2CO3 plates. The visible light driven photocatalytic activity of Bi2O2CO3/Bi2O4 heterojunction photocatalyst was evaluated by decomposing dyes, phenol, and bisphenol A in water. Compared with Bi2O2CO3 and Bi2O4, the Bi2O2CO3/Bi2O4 photocatalysts have exhibited remarkable enhanced activity under visible light. The excellent activity can be mainly attributed to the enhanced separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Controlled experiments using different radical scavengers proved that O2- and h+ played the main role in decomposing organic pollutants. The results of this work would provide a new sight for the construction of visible light-responsive photocatalysts with high performance.

Abstract:Multilayered MoS2 coated hollow TiO2 heterostructures were fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal process using TiO2 hollow spheres as precursors. Compared with pure TiO2, the heterostructures exhibited greatly enhanced visible-light-responsive activity on photodecomposition of colorless phenol, due to the enlargement of visible light absorption and improvement separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Photocatalytic activity was influenced by the MoS2/TiO2 ratio and the optimized composition was obtained with high stability during recycling.

Abstract:In this paper, BiVO4/Bi12O15Cl6 was prepared by combination of ion exchange process and hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared photocatalyst was systematically investigated via the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation. The BiVO4/Bi12O15Cl6 composites showed much higher photocatalytic efficiency than that of BiVO4 and Bi12O15Cl6 . The increased photocatalytic performance is attributed to the formation of heterojunction between BiVO4 and Bi12O15Cl6, which results in the effective charges separation and visible light absorption. Significantly, hydroxy radical (center dot OH) and superoxide radical (center dot O-2(-)) were confirmed to be the dominant reactive species. Additionally, a direct Z-scheme mechanism was proposed on the basis of photoelectrochemical measurement and bang gap analyses.

Abstract:Novel, one-dimensional Bi2O3–Bi14MoO24 heterostructures with high interface quality were synthesized by high temperature calcination of Bi2MoO6–Bi(OHC2O4)·2H2O precursors in air at 400 °C for 2 h. Bi14MoO24 grew on the Bi2O3 porous rods by crystallographic-oriented epitaxial growth, which increased the interface quality and then provided the smallest penetration barrier for electron–hole pair transfer between Bi2O3–Bi14MoO24 interfaces. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared products was evaluated by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and phenol under solar/visible light irradiation. The results show that Bi2O3–Bi14MoO24 heterostructures display higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure phase Bi2O3 and Bi14MoO24, and 100% phenol (10 mg L−1) can be degraded in 80 min under visible light irradiation using the Bi2O3–Bi14MoO24 (DS-2) heterostructure as photocatalyst. This enhanced photocatalytic performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of the suitable band alignment of the Bi2O3 and Bi14MoO24, high interface quality and one-dimensionally ordered nanostructure. Radical scavenger experiments proved that the photogenerated holes and ˙O2− play key roles during the photodegradation process. This work offers an effective route to the design and fabrication of the junction structures with high interface quality for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:The competitive reaction between OH− and Br− can be utilized to effectively regulate the Bi/Br atomic ratio in BixOyBrz/TiO2 composites. The Bi4O5Br2/TiO2 heterojunction effectively suppresses the recombination of photo‐generated charge carriers and exhibits higher photocatalytic activity for phenol than other BixOyBrz/TiO2 composites. BixOyBrz/TiO2 composites have been synthesized by hydrothermal method, with TiO2 nanoparticles being employed as substrate. During the process of hydrothermal reaction, both temperature and pH have been utilized to effectively regulate the Bi/Br atomic ratio of BixOyBrz/TiO2 composites. In essence, the competitive reaction between OH− and Br− in the solution is the key factor to form BixOyBrz with different Bi/Br atomic ratios. Under visible light, the prepared Bi4O5Br2/TiO2 heterojunction demonstrates higher photocatalytic activity than other BixOyBrz/TiO2 composites for phenol and Rh B. The removal rate of phenol with Bi4O5Br2/TiO2 heterojunction is up to 92.1% after irradiation for 75 min. The excellent photocatalytic activities of Bi4O5Br2/TiO2 heterojunction are mainly attributed to its optimized microstructure and the matching band energy structure, whereby TiO2 nanoparticles with ≈10 nm diameter uniformly arranged on ≈10.2 nm thick Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets. Moreover, the heterojunction structure promotes the separation of photo‐generated electrons and holes in Bi4O5Br2/TiO2, while ·O2− and h+ are the main active species during its photocatalytic processes.

Abstract:Effective sunlight harvesting to realize environmental remediation remains great challenge for photocatalysis technique. Herein, the visible-light-driven CuBi2O4/Bi2WO6 hierarchical nanocomposites were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Compared to the pristine CuBi2O4 and Bi2WO6, all the CuBi2O4/Bi2WO6 nanocomposites exhibited the superior photocatalytic activity toward tetracycline (TC) degradation under visible light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm). Particularly, 60 wt% CuBi2O4/Bi2WO6 nanocomposite displayed the best photocatalytic activity, which can degrade 93% TC (20 mg/L) in 1 h with the rate constant of 0.0286 min(-1). Based on the COD removal, the apparent quantum yield was calculated to be 0.32%. The superior photocatalytic performance of the CuBi2O4/Bi2WO6 nanocomposite is mainly attributed to: I) the efficient interfacial charge separation of the Z-scheme heterojunction; II) the prolonged lifetime of the charge carriers; III) the enlarged hierarchical surface area; IV) the strengthened visible light absorption. The DFT calculations suggested that the photoexcited electrons were transferred from the Bi2WO6 conduction band consisting of W5d orbital to recombine with the holes in the CuBi2O4 valence band consisting of O2p orbital of, which greatly facilitated the charge separation in the heterostructure. This study could provide some enlightment to the heterojunction construction and visible light utilization for other catalytic system.
Fabrication of a Visible-Light In2S3/BiPO4 Heterojunction with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:The construction of a heterojunction is an effective way to improve the photocatalytic activity of a semiconductor. In this study, to improve the photocatalytic activity of BiPO4 in visible light and the quantum yield of In2S3, a novel In2S3/BiPO4 heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method. XRD and TEM characterizations reveal that In2S3 was irregularly loaded on the surface of BiPO4, leading to good dispersion of In2S3, greatly improving the catalyst active site. Meanwhile, In2S3 also greatly improves the visible light absorption of BiPO4. An ESR spin-trap technique and trapping experiments on active species indicate that O-2(-) and h(+) are the main activated species during the photodegradation process. Finally, the as-obtained In2S3/BiPO4 heterojunction exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than those of pure In2S3 and BiPO4 for the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC). This work provides a promising way to photodegrade organic materials to reduce water pollution.

Abstract:A novel hierarchical BiOI/Bi2MoO6 composites are prepared by a facile precipitation-deposition method. The prepared photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The resulting BiOI/Bi2MoO6 composites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity and stability towards the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The optimal composite with 25% BiOI content shows the highest photocatalytic activity for MB degradation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is mainly attributed to the formation of BiOI/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction that can facilitate the separation and transfer of the photo-generated charge carriers. The roles of active species in the photocatalytic process are discussed by using different types of active species scavengers. Meanwhile, combined with the photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the degradation mechanism of the photocatalysts is proposed. It is hoped that the work could provide valuable information on the design of specific structure materials with more excellent properties and set the foundation for the further industrial application. Abstract:Developing high-efficiency and low-cost photocatalysis are of important significance for large-scale organic waste disposal technologies. Here, a versatile and simple solvothermal-sintering route is proposed to construct WO3/TiO2 heterojunction for catalytic oxidation of origin dyes under visible light irradiation. Tightly bonded bimetal centers and well-designed heterojunction lead to significantly reduced band gap of the photocatalysis. Furthermore, significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity are achieved for degrading various organic dyes under visible light. In particular, the degradation rate of RhB with the heterojunction reaches 95.31% under visible light for 80 min, which is considerably higher than that of 34.81% with TiO2. Besides, WO3/TiO2 heterojunction still maintains excellent photocatalytic activity after three cycles of degradation. This work proposes a simple, low-cost but effective route to fabricate WO3/TiO2 heterojunction, which can be used for large-scale organic wastewater disposals across industrial circles.

Abstract:A novel heterojunction photocatalyst with well-dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles on Co-Doped g-C3N4 has been successfully fabricated by an in situ generation solvothermal method. The photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared TiO2/Co-g-C3N4 catalyst was evaluated by the degradation of phenol in the presence of Cr6+ under simulated sunlight irradiation. The catalyst exhibited markedly enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of phenol but obviously decreased photocatalytic activity for reduction of Cr6+ compared with common TiO2/g-C3N4 catalyst. The mechanism for this photocatalytic performance was proposed.
A Facile Preparation Strategy for Bi2O4/Bi2WO6 Heterojunction with Excellent Visible Light Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:In this work, we provide a facile method to synthesize Bi2O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction by a two-step hydrothermal. Bi2O4 micro-rods are in-situ generated on the surface of Bi2WO6 microspheres. Compared to pure Bi2WO6, the photocatalytic activity for the Bi2O4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction was enhanced 5 folds in degradation of Rhodamine B. In the degradation of Methyl Orange, the enhanced factor could reach to 90 folds under visible light. The superior activity could be attributed to the rapid separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carries, which could be proved by photocurrent test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Moreover, the active material trapping experiments proved that ·O2− and h+ are the main active species in the degradation process. The present work provides a new sight for the fabricating of visible light-driven photocatalyst with high efficiency.
Fabrication of a Narrow-Band-Gap Ag6Si2O7/BiOBr Composite with High Stability and Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:In this study, a facile and economical method was reported to enhance the photocatalytic activity of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) semiconductor through the fabrication of heterojunction with Ag6Si2O7. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, the transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were utilized to characterize the crystal structures, morphologies and optical properties of the as-prepared samples. Photocatalytic experiments showed that the Ag6Si2O7/BiOBr composite had a higher rate and efficiency for degradation of methyl orange and phenol than the pure Ag6Si2O7 and BiOBr under visible light illumination. The optimal Ag/Bi molar ratio in Ag6Si2O7/BiOBr composite was found to be 2:1. The enhanced photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the high separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs. The trapping experiments of radicals showed that the photogenerated holes (h+) and superoxide ions (·O2−) were the main active species. Moreover, the synthesized samples exhibited almost no activity loss even after four recycling runs, indicating their high photocatalytic stability. Considering the facile and environment friendly route for the synthesis of Ag6Si2O7/BiOBr hybrids with enhanced visible-light-induced photocatalytic activity, it is possible to widely apply these hybrids in arious fields.

Abstract:A novel visible-light-responding BiVO4–Cu2O–TiO2 ternary heterostructure composite was successfully fabricated via the preparation of BiVO4–TiO2 followed by coupling with Cu2O through facile wet chemistry methods based on the strategy of energy gap engineering. The as-fabricated composite was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Benefited from the rational design and construction, BiVO4–Cu2O–TiO2 exhibits a significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under the visible-light irradiation as compared with Cu2O and Cu2O–TiO2. Specifically, under the irradiation with an ordinary 9W energy-saving fluorescent lamp for 8h, the photocatalytic degradation ratio of RhB for 5wt%BiVO4–40wt%Cu2O–TiO2 reaches 97.8%. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of BiVO4–Cu2O–TiO2 can be ascribed to the matched band edge positions of BiVO4, Cu2O and TiO2, the heterojunction formations among them as well as the lower charge transfer resistance, favoring the separation of the photo-generated electron–hole pairs. A possible mechanism of the visible-light photocatalytic degradation of RhB is also proposed.
