Abstract:Global fisheries and the future of sustainable seafood are predicated on healthy populations of various species of fish and shellfish. Recent developments in the collection of large-volume optical data by autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), stationary camera arrays, and towed vehicles has made it possible for fishery scientists to generate species-specific, size-structured abundance estimates for different species of marine organisms via imagery. The immense volume of data collected by such devices quickly exceeds manual processing capacity and creates a strong need for automatic image analysis. This paper presents an open-source computer vision software platform designed to integrate common image and video analytics, such as stereo calibration, object detection and object classification, into a sequential data processing pipeline that is easy to program, multi-threaded, and generic. The system provides a cross-language common interface for each of these components, multiple implementations of each, as well as unified methods for evaluating and visualizing the results of different methods for accomplishing the same task.

An Innovative Method to Classify Remote Sensing Images Using Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm

Abstract:By the combination of the bio-inspired computing methods, an intelligent method to classify remote-sensing images using artificial bee colony(ABC) algorithm is proposed. This ABC-based classification method searches for the optimal split points on each band of remote-sensing image automatically, where the optimal solution of split points emerge from intelligent behaviour of honey bee swarms. The method defines bees search path as the connection between optimal split points and feature category node, and constructs classification rules in the form of 'IF-THEN'. This smart approach can express the complex classification more clearly without mathematical formulas. By taking an example of ALOS image in the north shore of the Yangtze River estuary, the proposed classification method based on ABC algorithm were implemented and tested against See5.0 decision-tree method. The overall classification accuracy and Kappa coefficient of ABC intelligent method are higher than the See5.0 decision-tree one. It is shown that the ABC intelligent method has better classification results.

Abstract:Abstract Water is a vital resource essential to the survival and development of all creatures. With the rapid growth of industry and agriculture, people face a severe threat of ecological destruction and environmental pollution while living earthly lives. Water pollution, in particular, harms people’s health the most. As a result, water supply security has become a top priority. As a critical point in water supply safety, monitoring water quality effectively and forecasting sudden water contamination on time has become a research hotspot worldwide. With the rapid development and wide applications of artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies, biological activity identification-based intelligent water quality monitoring methods have drawn widespread attention. They were taking fish activities as the water-quality indicator has gained extensive attention by introducing advanced computer vision and artificial intelligence technologies with low cost and ease of carrying. This article comprehensively reviews recent progress in the research and applications of machine vision-based intelligent water quality monitoring and early warning techniques based on fish activity behavior recognition. In detail, it addresses water quality-oriented fish detection and tracking, activity recognition, and abnormal behavior recognition-based intelligent water quality monitoring. It analyzes and compares the performance and their favorite application conditions. Finally, it summarizes and discusses the difficulties and hotspots of water quality monitoring based on the fish’s abnormal behavior recognition and their future development trends.

Abstract:Abstract. Large-area image acquisition techniques are essential in underwater investigations: high-resolution 3D image-based reconstructions have improved coral reef monitoring by enabling novel seascape ecological analysis. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers methods for significantly accelerating image data interpretation, such as automatically recognizing, enumerating, and measuring organisms. However, the rapid proliferation of these technological achievements has led to a relative lack of standardization of methods. Remarkably, there are notable differences in procedures for generating human and AI annotations, and there is also a scarcity of publicly available datasets and shared machine-learning models. The lack of standard procedures makes it challenging to compare and reproduce scientific findings. One way to overcome this problem is to make the most used platforms by coral reef scientists interoperable so that the analyses can all be exported into a common format. This paper introduces functionality to promote interoperability between three popular open-source software tools dedicated to the digital study of coral reefs: TagLab, CoralNet, and Viscore. As users of each platform may have different analysis pipelines, we discuss several workflows for managing and processing point and area annotations, improving collaboration among these tools. Our work sets the foundation for a more seamless ecosystem that maintains the established investigation procedures of various laboratories but allows for easier result sharing.

Abstract:Ecosystem monitoring is central to effective management, where rapid reporting is essential to provide timely advice. While digital imagery has greatly improved the speed of underwater data collection for monitoring benthic communities, image analysis remains a bottleneck in reporting observations. In recent years, a rapid evolution of artificial intelligence in image recognition has been evident in its broad applications in modern society, offering new opportunities for increasing the capabilities of coral reef monitoring. Here, we evaluated the performance of Deep Learning Convolutional Neural Networks for automated image analysis, using a global coral reef monitoring dataset. The study demonstrates the advantages of automated image analysis for coral reef monitoring in terms of error and repeatability of benthic abundance estimations, as well as cost and benefit. We found unbiased and high agreement between expert and automated observations (97%). Repeated surveys and comparisons against existing monitoring programs also show that automated estimation of benthic composition is equally robust in detecting change and ensuring the continuity of existing monitoring data. Using this automated approach, data analysis and reporting can be accelerated by at least 200x and at a fraction of the cost (1%). Combining commonly used underwater imagery in monitoring with automated image annotation can dramatically improve how we measure and monitor coral reefs worldwide, particularly in terms of allocating limited resources, rapid reporting and data integration within and across management areas.

Abstract:To effectively protect the marine environment, it is crucial to establish effective environ mental monitoring platforms. Traditional marine environmental monitoring methods heavily rely on morphological identification and field expertise, with the sampling process being disruptive and potentially destructive to vulnerable marine environments. In light of emerging biomonitoring needs and biodiversity declines, we reviewed the urgently needed, ongoing advances in developing effective, noninvasive, and innovative monitoring methods and systems to examine the complex marine environment for better strategic conservation and protection, using the coral ecosystem as one of the representative forefront examples in marine protection. This review summarizes current trends and efforts in transitioning into more standardizable and automatable utilizations of environmental DNA metabarcoding-based monitoring strategies and high-resolution underwater optical imaging monitoring systems as two of the promising pillars for the next generation of noninvasive biomonitoring and associated applications. The assistance of artificial intelligence for environmental DNA metabarcoding and high-resolution underwater optical imaging into an empowered, all-rounded monitoring platform for enhanced monitoring capacity is discussed as a highly potent direction for future research exploration. This review will be a cornerstone reference for the future development of artificial intelligence-assisted, noninvasive, and innovative marine environmental monitoring systems.

Abstract:Utilization and exploitation of marine resources by humans have contributed to the growth of marine research. As technology progresses, artificial intelligence (AI) approaches are progressively being applied to maritime research, complementing traditional marine forecasting models and observation techniques to some degree. This article takes the artificial intelligence algorithmic model as its starting point, references several application trials, and methodically elaborates on the emerging research trend of mixing machine learning and physical modeling concepts. This article discusses the evolution of methodologies for the building of ocean observations, the application of artificial intelligence to remote sensing satellites, smart sensors, and intelligent underwater robots, and the construction of ocean big data. We also cover the method of identifying internal waves (IW), heatwaves, El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and sea ice using artificial intelligence algorithms. In addition, we analyze the applications of artificial intelligence models in the prediction of ocean components, including physics-driven numerical models, model-driven statistical models, traditional machine learning models, data-driven deep learning models, and physical models combined with artificial intelligence models. This review shows the growth routes of the application of artificial intelligence in ocean observation, ocean phenomena identification, and ocean elements forecasting, with examples and forecasts of their future development trends from several angles and points of view, by categorizing the various uses of artificial intelligence in the ocean sector.

Abstract:Water features (e.g., water quantity and water quality) are one of the most important environmental factors essential to improving climate-change resilience. Remote sensing (RS) technologies empowered by artificial intelligence (AI) have become one of the most demanded strategies to automating water information extraction and thus intelligent monitoring. In this article, we provide a systematic review of the literature that incorporates artificial intelligence and computer vision methods in the water resources sector with a focus on intelligent water body extraction and water quality detection and monitoring through remote sensing. Based on this review, the main challenges of leveraging AI and RS for intelligent water information extraction are discussed, and research priorities are identified. An interactive web application designed to allow readers to intuitively and dynamically review the relevant literature was also developed.

Abstract:Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant advances in radiology. Nonetheless, challenges in AI development, validation, and reproducibility persist, primarily due to the lack of high-quality, large-scale, standardized data across the world. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive standardization of medical imaging data and seamless integration with structured medical data. Developed by the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics community, the OMOP Common Data Model enables large-scale international collaborations with structured medical data. It ensures syntactic and semantic interoperability, while supporting the privacy-protected distribution of research across borders. The recently proposed Medical Imaging Common Data Model is designed to encompass all DICOM-formatted medical imaging data and integrate imaging-derived features with clinical data, ensuring their provenance. The harmonization of medical imaging data and its seamless integration with structured clinical data at a global scale will pave the way for advanced AI research in radiology. This standardization will enable federated learning, ensuring privacy-preserving collaboration across institutions and promoting equitable AI through the inclusion of diverse patient populations. Moreover, it will facilitate the development of foundation models trained on large-scale, multimodal datasets, serving as powerful starting points for specialized AI applications. Objective and transparent algorithm validation on a standardized data infrastructure will enhance reproducibility and interoperability of AI systems, driving innovation and reliability in clinical applications.

Abstract:Plankton imaging systems are capable of providing fine-scale observations that enhance our understanding of key physical and biological processes. However, processing the large volumes of data collected by imaging systems remains a major obstacle for their employment, and existing approaches are designed either for images acquired under laboratory controlled conditions or within clear waters. In the present study, we developed a semi-automated approach to analyze plankton taxa from images acquired by the ZOOplankton VISualization (ZOOVIS) system within turbid estuarine waters, in Chesapeake Bay. When compared to images under laboratory controlled conditions or clear waters, images from highly turbid waters are often of relatively low quality and more variable, due to the large amount of objects and nonlinear illumination within each image. We first customized a segmentation procedure to locate objects within each image and extracted them for classification. A maximally stable extremal regions algorithm was applied to segment large gelatinous zooplankton and an adaptive threshold approach was developed to segment small organisms, such as copepods. Unlike the existing approaches for images acquired from laboratory, controlled conditions or clear waters, the target objects are often the majority class, and the classification can be treated as a multi-class classification problem. We customized a two-level hierarchical classification procedure using support vector machines to classify the target objects (< 5%), and remove the non-target objects (> 95%). First, histograms of oriented gradients feature descriptors were constructed for the segmented objects. In the first step all non-target and target objects were classified into different groups: arrow-like, copepod-like, and gelatinous zooplankton. Each object was passed to a group-specific classifier to remove most non-target objects. After the object was classified, an expert or non-expert then manually removed the non-target objects that could not be removed by the procedure. The procedure was tested on 89,419 images collected in Chesapeake Bay, and results were consistent with visual counts with >80% accuracy for all three groups.

Abstract:The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has revolutionized biodiversity assessment practices in recent years. This comprehensive review explores the various applications of AI and IoT in biodiversity assessment, highlighting their contributions to data collection, analysis, and conservation efforts. The synergy between AI algorithms and IoT sensors enables real-time monitoring of species diversity, habitat health, and environmental changes, thereby enhancing our understanding of ecosystem dynamics and supporting effective conservation strategies. Key methodologies discussed include automated species identification, species distribution modeling, wildlife monitoring and tracking, ecological forecasting, environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, and data integration and visualization. The review also addresses challenges such as data quality and standardization, ethical and privacy concerns, and the need for capacity building. Abstract:The scholarly literature on the links between Artificial Intelligence and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals is burgeoning as climate change and the biotic crisis leading to mass extinction of species are raising concerns across the globe. With a focus on Sustainable Development Goals 14 (Life below Water) and 15 (Life on Land), this paper explores the opportunities of Artificial Intelligence applications in various domains of wildlife, ocean and land conservation. For this purpose, we develop a conceptual framework on the basis of a comprehensive review of the literature and examples of Artificial Intelligence-based approaches to protect endangered species, monitor and predict animal behavior patterns, and track illegal or unsustainable wildlife trade. Our findings provide scholars, governments, environmental organizations, and entrepreneurs with a much-needed taxonomy and real-life examples of Artificial Intelligence opportunities for tackling the grand challenge of rapidly decreasing biological diversity, which has severe implications for global food security, nature, and humanity.

Abstract:Measuring public attitudes toward wildlife provides crucial insights into our relationship with nature and helps monitor progress toward Global Biodiversity Framework targets. Yet, conducting such assessments at a global scale is challenging. Manually curating search terms for querying news and social media is tedious, costly, and can lead to biased results. Raw news and social media data returned from queries are often cluttered with irrelevant content and syndicated articles. We aim to overcome these challenges by leveraging modern Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools. We introduce a folk taxonomy approach for improved search term generation and employ cosine similarity on Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency vectors to filter syndicated articles. We also introduce an extensible relevance filtering pipeline which uses unsupervised learning to reveal common topics, followed by an open-source zero-shot Large Language Model (LLM) to assign topics to news article titles, which are then used to assign relevance. Finally, we conduct sentiment, topic, and volume analyses on resulting data. We illustrate our methodology with a case study of news and X (formerly Twitter) data before and during the COVID-19 pandemic for various mammal taxa, including bats, pangolins, elephants, and gorillas. During the data collection period, up to 62% of articles including keywords pertaining to bats were deemed irrelevant to biodiversity, underscoring the importance of relevance filtering. At the pandemic's onset, we observed increased volume and a significant sentiment shift toward horseshoe bats, which were implicated in the pandemic, but not for other focal taxa. The proposed methods open the door to conservation practitioners applying modern and emerging NLP tools, including LLMs "out of the box," to analyze public perceptions of biodiversity during current events or campaigns.

Towards Context-Rich Automated Biodiversity Assessments: Deriving AI-Powered Insights from Camera Trap Data

Abstract:Camera traps offer enormous new opportunities in ecological studies, but current automated image analysis methods often lack the contextual richness needed to support impactful conservation outcomes. Here we present an integrated approach that combines deep learning-based vision and language models to improve ecological reporting using data from camera traps. We introduce a two-stage system: YOLOv10-X to localise and classify species (mammals and birds) within images, and a Phi-3.5-vision-instruct model to read YOLOv10-X binding box labels to identify species, overcoming its limitation with hard to classify objects in images. Additionally, Phi-3.5 detects broader variables, such as vegetation type, and time of day, providing rich ecological and environmental context to YOLO's species detection output. When combined, this output is processed by the model's natural language system to answer complex queries, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is employed to enrich responses with external information, like species weight and IUCN status (information that cannot be obtained through direct visual analysis). This information is used to automatically generate structured reports, providing biodiversity stakeholders with deeper insights into, for example, species abundance, distribution, animal behaviour, and habitat selection. Our approach delivers contextually rich narratives that aid in wildlife management decisions. By providing contextually rich insights, our approach not only reduces manual effort but also supports timely decision-making in conservation, potentially shifting efforts from reactive to proactive management.

Many studies have shown that the macroscopic imaging characteristics of tumors are closely related to microscopic gene, protein and molecular changes. In order to explore the function of artificial intelligence algorithms in in-depth analysis of medical imaging information, this paper reviews the articles published in recent years from three perspectives: medical imaging analysis method, clinical applications and the development of medical imaging in the direction of pathological molecular prediction. We believe that AI-aided medical imaging analysis will be extensively contributing to precise and efficient clinical decision.

Abstract:Breast image data processed by AI algorithms can be applied to various clinical scenarios: screening, feature identification and surveillance. This paper overviews the rapid development of AI in breast imaging in the past decade and discusses the progress of breast imaging and the problems and challenges through the lens of National Natural Science Foundation of China project proposals.
