Abstract:This note briefly reviews the Mirror Principle as developed in the series of papers (19)(20)(21)(22)(23). We illustrate this theory with a few new examples. One of them gives an intriguing connection to a problem of counting holomorphic disks and annuli. This note has been submitted for the proceedings of the Workshop on Strings, Duality and Geometry the C.R.M. in Montreal of March 2000.
Motivic Splittings For Symmetric Matrices

Abstract:We show that the space of symmetric matrices of a fixed rank $k$ over a field $K$ of characteristic not equal to $2$ is split Tate. We do this by promoting the point-counting strategy of MacWilliams over finite fields to a filtration of the locus of rank $\leq k$ symmetric matrices that is independent of the field. This filtration immediately allows for a computation of their isomorphism classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties in terms of the Lefschetz motive. We then promote this computation to prove that the space of symmetric matrices of a fixed rank $k$ are split Tate in Voevodsky's category of motives in characteristic $0$ and Kelly's category of motives in characteristic $p$.

A Geometric Splitting of the Motive of $\textrm{GL}_n$

Abstract:A paper by Haynes Miller shows that there is a filtration on the unitary groups that splits in the stable homotopy category, where the stable summands are certain Thom spaces over Grassmannians. We give an algebraic version of this result in the context of Voevodsky's tensor triangulated category of stable motivic complexes $\textbf{DM}(k,R)$, where $k$ is a field. Specifically, we show that there are algebraic analogs of the Thom spaces appearing in Miller's splitting that give rise to an analogous splitting of the motive $M(\textrm{GL}_n)$ in $\textbf{DM}(k,R)$, where $\textrm{GL}_n$ is the general linear group scheme over $k$.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the motivic stable homotopy type of abelian varieties. For an abelian variety over a field $k$ with a rational point, it always splits off a top-dimensional cell in motivic stable homotopy category $\text{SH}(k)$. Let $k = \mathbb{R}$, there is a concrete splitting which is determined by the motive of X and the real points $X(\mathbb{R})$ in $\text{SH}(\mathbb{R})_\mathbb{Q}$. We will also discuss this splitting from a viewpoint of the Chow-Witt correspondences.

Abstract:For each configuration of rational points on the affine line, we define an operation on the group of unstable A1 motivic homotopy classes of endomorphisms of the projective line. We also derive an algebraic formula for the image of such an operation under Cazanave and Morel's unstable degree map, which is valued in an extension of the Grothendieck--Witt group. In contrast to the topological setting, these operations depend on the choice of configuration of points via a discriminant. We prove this by first showing a local-to-global formula for the global unstable degree as a modified sum of local terms. We then use an anabelian argument to generalize from the case of local degrees of a global rational function to the case of an arbitrary collection of endomorphisms of the projective line.

Abstract:We construct invariants of birational maps with values in the Kontsevich--Tschinkel group and in the truncated Grothendieck groups of varieties. These invariants are morphisms of groupoids and are well-suited to investigating the structure of the Grothendieck ring and L-equivalence. Building on known constructions of L-equivalence, we prove new unexpected results about Cremona groups.

Abstract:We define a Jordan homomorphism $\varphi$ from a ring $R$ to a ring $R'$ to be splittable if the ideal (of the subring generated by the image of $\varphi$) generated by all $\varphi(xy)-\varphi(x)\varphi(y)$, $x,y\in R$, has trivial intersection with the ideal generated by all $\varphi(xy)-\varphi(y)\varphi(x)$, $x,y\in R$. Our main result states that a splittable Jordan homomorphism is the sum of a homomorphism and an antihomomorphism on the commutator ideal. As applications, we obtain results that give new insight into the question of the structure of Jordan homomorphisms on some classes of rings.

Abstract:Given a pure motive $M$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with a multilinear algebraic structure $\mathsf{s}$ on $M$, and given a representation $V$ of the group respecting $\mathsf{s}$, we describe a functorial transfer $M^V$. We formulate a criterion that guarantees when the two periods of $M^V$ are equal. This has an implication for the critical values of the $L$-function attached to $M^V.$ The criterion is explicated in a variety of examples such as: tensor product motives and Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions; orthogonal motives and the standard $L$-function for even orthogonal groups; twisted tensor motives and Asai $L$-functions.

Abstract:Given a right adjoint functor between triangulated categories and an object in the target category, we show that the unit map of adjunction on that object is a split monomorphism if and only if the object belongs to the additive closure of (all possible) shifts of an object in the image of the functor. Applications to geometric context related to (derived) splinters and rational singularities are given.

Abstract:This article gives a short step-by-step introduction to the representation of parametric Feynman integrals in scalar perturbative quantum field theory as periods of motives. The application of motivic Galois theory to the algebro-geometric and categorical structures underlying Feynman graphs is reviewed up to the current state of research. The example of primitive log-divergent Feynman graphs in scalar massless $\phi^4$ quantum field theory is analysed in detail.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a complex manifold. We prove that a compact submanifold $S\subset M$ with splitting tangent sequence (called a splitting submanifold) is rational homogeneous when $M$ is in a large class of rational homogeneous spaces of Picard number one. Moreover, when $M$ is irreducible Hermitian symmetric, we prove that $S$ must be also Hermitian symmetric. The basic tool we use is the restriction and projection map $\pi$ of the global holomorphic vector fields on the ambient space which is induced from the splitting condition. The usage of global holomorphic vector fields may help us set up a new scheme to classify the splitting submanifolds in explicit examples, as an example we give a differential geometric proof for the classification of compact splitting submanifolds with $\dim\geq 2$ in a hyperquadric, which has been previously proven using algebraic geometry.

Abstract:The circle method has been successfully used over the last century to study rational points on hypersurfaces. More recently, a version of the method over function fields, combined with spreading out techniques, has led to a range of results about moduli spaces of rational curves on hypersurfaces. In this paper a version of the circle method is implemented in the setting of the Grothendieck ring of varieties. This allows us to approximate the classes of these moduli spaces directly, without relying on point counting, and leads to a deeper understanding of their geometry.

Abstract:We show that the Grothendieck-Chow motive of a smooth hyperplane section $Y$ of an inner twisted form $X$ of a Milnor hypersurface splits as a direct sum of shifted copies of the motive of the Severi-Brauer variety of the associated cyclic algebra $A$ and the motive of its maximal commutative subfield $L\subset A$. The proof is based on the non-triviality of the (monodromy) Galois action on the equivariant Chow group of $Y_L$.

Abstract:We study one parameter deformations of a pair consisting of an analytic singular space $X_0$ and a function $f_0$ on it, in case this defines an isolated singularity. We prove, under general conditions, a bouquet decomposition of the Milnor fibre when the isolated singularity splits in the deformation and the invariance of the Milnor fibration if there is no splitting.
