Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:Lignin, a major component of lignocellulosic biomass, is crucial to plant growth and development but is a major impediment to efficient biomass utilization in various processes. Valorizing lignin is increasingly realized as being essential. However, rapid condensation of lignin during acidic extraction leads to the formation of recalcitrant condensed units that, along with similar units and structural heterogeneity in native lignin, drastically limits product yield and selectivity. Catechyl lignin (C-lignin), which is essentially a benzodioxane homopolymer without condensed units, might represent an ideal lignin for valorization, as it circumvents these issues. We discovered that C-lignin is highly acid-resistant. Hydrogenolysis of C-lignin resulted in the cleavage of all benzodioxane structures to produce catechyl-type monomers in near-quantitative yield with a selectivity of 90% to a single monomer.

Abstract:Condensation, dark color and low extraction yield of lignin have hindered the full valorization of biomass during lignocellulosic fractionation. Herein, we introduce a novel biomass fractionation concept that addresses the issue of lignin's spatial confinement. Building upon this concept, we have devised an environmentally friendly and straightforward strategy. This approach involves a combination of selective carboxylation at the C-gamma-OH position using citric acid and etherification at the C-alpha-OH position using butanol. The objective is to mitigate the spatial confinement of lignin and stabilize its active intermediates for lignin extraction. Consequently, up to 91.4 +/- 0.2% lignin with a light color can be separated from the recalcitrant softwoods, as a UV blocker to improve the performance of sunscreen cream. The cellulosic residue can be enzymatically digested to glucose with a yield of 80%. The initiated biomass fractionation theory and strategy in this study provide a new concept for the isolation of lignin and full valorization of lignocellulose, promoting the development of a sustainable economy.

Abstract:The effective utilization of lignin, a complex and abundant biopolymer in biomass, holds great potential for sustainable biomass conversion and the development of renewable resources. This study focuses on the catalytic oxidative transformation of lignin, aiming to unravel its structural features and their impact on product diversity. The significance of the content of β-O-4 linkages in lignin becomes evident as a crucial factor influencing the yield of phenolic monomer products, emphasizing its utmost importance. Additionally, the presence of S-type structural units in lignin positively influences its catalytic conversion efficiency, as evidenced by higher S/G ratios and increased degradation yields. However, the complex nature of lignin, influenced by growth environment and pretreatment methods, presents challenges for its efficient depolymerization and utilization. Extraction Of Lignin From Wood Biomass Using A New Ionic Liquid At Open Atmosphere

Abstract:Using wood biomass as opposed to petroleum/fossil feedstock to synthesize chemicals and monomers offers the value proposition of a reduced carbon foot print. A critical step in biomass utilization is to obtain the fermentable monomeric pentose and hexose sugar subunits from various lig-nocellulosic polymers. However, lignin is a three-dimensional amorphous polymer based on methoxylated phenylpropanoid units, and is crosslinks to different polysaccharides with covalent bond. The presence of lignin is a barrier to enzymatic hydrosis of cellulose by cellulases, as well as inhibiting fermentation to form products such as ethanol. Usually, there are three approaches to fractionate biomass into useful chemicals. The first one is extract lignin at high temperature and pressure. The second approach involves more severe conditions such as the temperatures and pressures used in gasification, or use the mineral acids at elevated temperatures to liberate sugars for fermentation. The third way is dissolution of biomass using ionic liquid to extract lignin, and then re-precipitation the cellulosic residue. In this paper, we investigate the lignin extraction uses a purpose designed ionic liquid (IL) 1 -butyl-3-methylimidazolium acesulfamate [BMIM]Ace at room temperature and open atmosphere. It was synthesized from the sugar acesulfamate potassium (Ace K), and with good property of greater thermal stability, increased viscosities, and inability to dissolve crystalline cellulose. In addition, it is of low cost and nontoxic, and is expected to interact with lignin owing to its aromatic character of anion. Organic solvents were firstly used in the extraction process, which reduce the viscosity of IL and increase the lignin yield. The lignin can be obtained by using acetone as the reconstitution solvent (IL/acetone 1:3, v/v), and approximately 11.5% and 96.5% of lignin and the reconstitution cellulose-rich material have been achieved in one dissolution/reconstitution cycle by fresh IL, respectively. It was found that the presence of some organic solvents mix with IL can increase the extraction efficiency. The regenerated ionic liquid showed good retention of structure and properties. The regenerated lignin fractions exhibited large molecular weights (M-w, 3700-7810 g mol(-1)). The physicochemical properties of the extracted lignin fractions were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and high-performance anion exchange chromatography (HPAEC). The reconstitution cellulose-rich material can be serving as a valuable source for enzymatic saccharification for next step. These results indicate a potential approach in further optimization of the choice of low-cost Its combined with organic solvents for the efficient utilization of the wood biomass.

Abstract:The development of green and effective solvents is of significant importance for lignin utilization. Here, we demonstrate that various biomass-derived polar aprotic solvents can serve as co-solvents with poly-deep eutectic solvents (PDESs) for massively dissolving lignin at room temperature. The pristine PDESs were composed of polyethylene glycol derivatives and levulinic acid, while all of them exhibited poor solubility to enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL), sodium lignosulfonate (LS), and organosolv lignin (OL). With the further introduction of polar aprotic solvents, including dimethylisosorbide (DMI), dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene), N-formylmorpholine (NFM), and propylene carbonate (PC), synergy between polar aprotic solvents and PDESs dramatically increased lignin solubility to 96.82 %. The PC and DMI were more suitable for assisting the solubilization of EHL and OL, while Cyrene and PC were targeted at the solubilization of LS in PDESs, respectively. Meanwhile, a new unified co-solvent solubilization mechanism relative to the Kamlet-Taft empirical parameters was proposed. The novel polar aprotic/PDES systems provide a new avenue for booming the high utilization of lignin.

Abstract:Efficient dissolution is highly important for upgrading of lignin into useful chemicals, which relays on the development of robust solvent systems. Herein, a novel, green, and robust solvent system for lignin dissolution was developed using biomass-derived dimethyl isosorbide (DMI) and water. Interestingly, the developed DMI-based solvent systems showed good ability to dissolve different types of lignin, i.e., alkali lignin (AL), enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL), kraft lignin (KL) and dealkaline lignin (DAL), by tuning the weight ratio of DMI and water. Systematic investigations revealed that the lignin solubility correlated with Hansen solubility parameters and Kamlet-Taft parameters although the relationship varied with the lignin type. More importantly, lignin (with AL as an example) fractions with controlled molar mass could be obtained via gradient precipitation by gradually increasing the water content in the solvent system. Additionally, DMI had a good recyclability, and the recycled DMI showed no obvious decrease in the ability to dissolve lignin. This work provided an innovative and green solvent system to dissolve lignin, contributing to the realization of a "closed-loop" biorefinery process.

Abstract:The complex and heterogeneous nature of the lignin macromolecule has presented a lasting barrier to its utilization. To achieve high lignin yield, the technical lignin extraction process usually severely modifies and condenses the native structure of lignin, which is a critical drawback for its utilization in conversion processes. In addition, there is no method capable of separating lignin from plant biomass with controlled structural properties. Here, we developed an N-heterocycle-based deep eutectic solvent formed between lactic acid and pyrazole (La–Py DES) with a binary hydrogen bonding functionality resulting in a high affinity toward lignin. Up to 93.7% of lignin was extracted from wheat straw biomass at varying conditions from 90 °C to 145 °C. Through careful selection of treatment conditions as well as lactic acid to pyrazole ratios, lignin with controlled levels of ether linkage content, hydroxyl group content, and average molecular weight can be generated. Under mild extraction conditions (90 °C to 120 °C), light-colored native-like lignin can be produced with up to 80% yield, whereas ether linkage–free lignin with low polydispersity can be obtained at 145 °C. Overall, this study offers a new strategy for native lignin extraction and generating lignin with controlled structural properties.

Abstract:The lignin-first concept offers an opportunity to utilize the entire lignocellulosic biomass efficiently. However, current conversion strategies rely on high-temperature hydrogenolysis by supported metal catalysts, leading to low-functionalized products or difficulty in separation of solid catalyst from cellulose/hemicellulose. Here, we report the fractionation and valorization of lignocellulose via solar energy-driven conversion of native lignin at room temperature. We found that cadmium sulfide quantum dots not only catalyse the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds in lignin models quantitatively but also are efficient for the conversion of native lignin within biomass into functionalized aromatics under visible light, while cellulose/hemicellulose remain almost intact. Further, the colloidal character of quantum dots enables their facile separation and recycling by a reversible aggregation–colloidization strategy. The β-O-4 bond in lignin is cleaved by an electron–hole coupled photoredox mechanism based on a C α radical intermediate, in which both photogenerated electrons and holes participate in the reaction.

Abstract:Enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) is a large-scale industrial waste generated from the bio-ethanol production process. Its complex and heterogeneous nature as well as its low solubility in common solvents, has posed a persistent barrier to its effective utilization. Here, EHL was converted into biofuel through a two-step process, involving non-catalytic solvolysis followed by catalytic product upgrading. The non-catalytic solvolysis step achieved complete EHL liquefaction in a mixture of isopropanol and H2O without char formation. In this step, H2O disrupts the hydrogen bonds in EHL and isopropanol break π-π stacking interactions between the aromatic rings in EHL·H2O also enhances EHL depolymerization, while isopropanol, as a hydrogen donor solvent, provides hydrogen that stabilizes active intermediates. In the catalytic product upgrading step, the liquid product of the first step was transformed into biofuels rich in cycloalkanes, arenes and alkylphenols, with a total carbon yield of 45.6 %. Isopropanol-H2O reforming reactions provided hydrogen for the upgrading process, avoiding the introduction of H2. This work demonstrates an effective approach for converting EHL into biofuels.
Selective Extraction and Conversion of Lignin in Actual Biomass to Monophenols: A Review

Abstract:Our over dependency on the fossil resource for industrial chemicals and fuels faces great challenges. Recently, the production of monophenols from lignin in lignocellulosic biomass is regarded as a promising process for sustainable biofuels. This article discusses the conversion of lignin in actual biomass directly to monophenols. The two step way including extraction of lignin from biomass and further degradation of the lignin oligomers to monophenols is especially discussed. The obtained monophenols can also be converted to chemicals with low-oxygen content via hydrodeoxygenation process. For extraction of lignin, co-solvent system is the most adopted for hydrolysis or solvolysis of lignin assisted by acid or alkaline catalysts. The structure of the obtained oligomers derived from lignin is discussed in detail. For lignin depolymerization, hydrogenolysis is an efficient method with the use of gaseous hydrogen or alcohols as hydrogen source. At the meantime, depolymerization mechanism and the route for repolymerization of the reaction intermediates are presented here. In hydrodeoxygenation process, metal catalysts, especially noble metal catalysts are required. The precise effects of the reaction solvents and catalysts on extraction and degradation of lignin need to be further investigated, and this will benefit to design more efficient strategies for lignin utilization.
Unraveling the mechanisms underlying lignin and xylan dissolution in recyclable biphasic catalytic systems

Abstract:Despite the exceptional performance of recyclable biphasic pretreatment systems ( i.e., p -toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH)/pentanol, H 2 SO 4 /butanol, and AlCl 3 /MTHF) in the holistic fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), there remains a significant gap in understanding of the intricate mechanisms governing the rapid dissolution of lignin and xylan from LCB. This study conducts comparative analyses using laboratory experiments and computational simulations to gain insights into the mechanism behind removing lignin and xylan in these systems. Under identical pretreatment conditions (140 °C, 45 min), three systems exhibited distinct levels of delignification and xylan removal. TsOH/pentanol showcased the highest levels of both delignification (83.3%) and xylan removal (98.1%), followed by H 2 SO 4 /butanol (77.9% delignification and 83.0% xylan removal), and AlCl 3 /MTHF (73.5% delignification and 97.2% xylan removal). Lignin characterization revealed that TsOH/pentanol and AlCl 3 /MTHF lignin samples boasted well-preserved β-O-4 bonds (42.4/100 Ar, 40.4/100 Ar, respectively), uniform molecular weights, and <1% sugar content. This led to high yields of phenolic monomers (TsOH/pentanol, 33.9%; AlCl 3 /MTHF, 33.7%) after catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin. Furthermore, mechanistic analyses revealed that the TsOH/pentanol and AlCl 3 /MTHF systems exhibited the most significant interaction energy formation with the lignin model (veratrylglycerol-b-guaiacyl ether) and D-xylan model due to robust hydrogen bonding interactions, yielding energy values of −2460 kJ/mol and −2385 kJ/mol, respectively. These interactions could play pivotal roles in accomplishing notable lignin and xylan extraction.

Abstract:Abstract The biomass pretreatment strategies using organic acids facilitate lignin removal and enhance the enzymatic digestion of cellulose. However, lignin always suffers a severe and irreversible condensation. The newly generated C–C bonds dramatically affect its further upgrading. In this study, we used a recyclable hydrotrope ( p -Toluenessulfonic acid, p -TsOH) to dissolve lignin under mild condition and stabilized lignin with a quenching agent (formaldehyde, FA) during extraction, achieving both value-added lignin extraction and efficient enzymatic saccharification of cellulose. Approximately 63.7% of lignin was dissolved by 80% (wt. %) p -TsOH with 1.5% FA addition at 80 °C, 30 min. The obtained lignin was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, 2D HSQC NMR spectroscopy, and GPC. The results indicated that the extracted lignin exhibited excellent properties, such as light color, a low molecular weight ( M w, 5371 g/mol), and a narrow polydispersity ( M w / M n , 1.63). The pretreated substrate was converted to ethanol via a quasi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process (Q-SSF). After fermentation of 60 h, the ethanol concentration reached 38.7 ± 3.3 g/L which was equivalent to a theoretical ethanol yield of 82.9 ± 2.2% based on the glucan content, while the residual glucose concentration was only 4.69 ± 1.4 g/L. In short, this pretreatment strategy protected lignin to form new C–C linkages and improved the enzymatic saccharification of glucan for high-titer ethanol production. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Simultaneous valorization of both carbohydrate and lignin fractions in lignocellulose remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel lignin-first strategy using triethylene glycol (TEG) under alkaline conditions for effective biomass fractionation producing highly digestible carbohydrates and reactive lignin was developed. Delignification was over 80% and fermentable sugar yields were close to 90% after pretreatment at 90 °C. The biocompatibility of TEG allowed direct enzymatic hydrolysis of the solid residue without washing, thus minimizing wastewater generation. Moreover, the obtained lignin (TEGL) had an uncondensed structure with well-preserved β-O-4 linkage, leading to near-equal aromatic monomer yields compared to cellulolytic enzyme lignin after catalytic-free pyrolysis, demonstrating high valorization potential. Overall, the proposed TEG solvent system is promising for a green and sustainable biorefinery process to achieve the complete utilization of lignocellulose.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant and renewable resource for the production of biobased value-added fuels, chemicals, and materials, but its effective exploitation by an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly strategy remains a challenge. Herein, a facile approach for efficiently cleaving lignin-carbohydrate complexes and ultrafast fractionation of components from wood by microwave-assisted treatment with deep eutectic solvent is reported. The solvent was composed of sustainable choline chloride and oxalic acid dihydrate, and showed a hydrogen-bond acidity of 1.31. Efficient fractionation of lignocellulose with the solvent was realized by heating at 80 degrees C under 800W microwave irradiation for 3min. The extracted lignin showed a low molecular weight of 913, a low polydispersity of 1.25, and consisted of lignin oligomers with high purity (ca. 96%), and thus shows potential in downstream production of aromatic chemicals. The other dissolved matter mainly comprised glucose, xylose, and hydroxymethylfurfural. The undissolved material was cellulose with crystalI structure and a crystallinity of approximately 75%, which can be used for fabricating nanocellulose. Therefore, this work promotes an ultrafast lignin-first biorefinery approach while simultaneously keeping the undissolved cellulose available for further utilization. This work is expected to contribute to improving the economics of overall biorefining of lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract:Photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin to prepare high-value chemicals is a promising way to promote the valuable utilization of lignin. However, the complexity and stubbornness of lignin structure seriously decrease the photocatalytic efficiency and selectivity. Photocatalyst TiO 2 and SDS-8/HCl system can effectively depolymerize the typical β-1 lignin models and ethanol organosolv lignin to value-added chemicals by oxidizing cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds. The addition of hydrochloric acid solution (1 mol/L) improves the selectivity of photocatalytic breaking of lignin C α -C β bonds. Chlorine ions are oxidized to chlorine radicals by photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals, dramatically increasing the photocatalytic efficiency. Electron paramagnetic resonance technique and Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry were used to demonstrate the presence of chlorine radicals. Under optimal conditions, the conversion of substrate Dpol is 98.4 %, and the obtained products are mainly benzaldehyde and benzoic acid. Isotope labeling experiments show that water is also involved in photocatalytic reactions and the oxygen needed to form the product benzaldehyde comes from water. Single-electron transfer processes are possible photocatalytic mechanisms that differ from the previous reports. Importantly, water and chlorine ions were found to be involved in photocatalytic reactions for the first time and promote the cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds. This work provides new ideas for photocatalytic cleavage of lignin C α -C β bonds in heterogeneous photocatalytic systems using micellar aqueous media.

An efficient and economical process for lignin depolymerization in biomass-derived solvent tetrahydrofuran

Abstract:The depolymerization of renewable lignin for phenolic monomer, a versatile biochemical and precursor for biofuel, has attracted increasing attention. Here, an efficient base-catalyzed depolymerization process for this natural aromatic polymer is presented with cheap industrial solid alkali MgO and biomass-derived solvent tetrahydrofuran (THF). Results showed that more than 13.2% of phenolic monomers were obtained under 250°C for 15 min, because of the excellent lignin dissolution of THF and its promotion effect on the catalytic activity of MgO. Furthermore, comparison characterization on the raw material, products and residual solid using elemental analysis, FT-IR, TG-DSC, Py-GC-MS and chemo-physical absorption and desorption demonstrated that this base-catalyzed process can inhibit char formation significantly. Whereas, the fact that thermal repolymerization of oligomer on the pore and surface of catalyst resulting in the declination of the catalytic performance is responsible for the residue formation.
Visible-Light-Driven Self-Hydrogen Transfer Hydrogenolysis of Lignin Models and Extracts into Phenolic Products

Abstract:Obtaining high selectivity of aromatic monomers from renewable lignin has been extensively pursued but is still unsuccessful, hampered by the need to efficiently cleave C-O/C-C bonds and inhibit lignin proliferation reactions. Herein, we report a transfer hydrogenolysis protocol using a heterogeneous ZnIn2S4 catalyst driven by visible light. In this process, alcoholic groups (C alpha H-OH) of lignin act as hydrogen donors. Proliferation of phenolic products to dark substances is suppressed under visible light illumination at low temperature (below 50 degrees C); formation of a light and transparent reaction solution allows visible light to be absorbed by the catalyst. With this strategy, 71-91% yields of phenols in the conversion of lignin beta-O-4 models and a 10% yield of p-hydroxyl acetophenone derivatives from organosolv lignin are achieved. Mechanistic studies reveal that C alpha H-OH groups of lignin beta-O-4 linkage are initially dehydrogenated on ZnIn2S4 to form a "hydrogen pool", and the adjacent C-beta-O bond is subsequently hydrogenolytically cleaved to two monomers by the "hydrogen pool". Thus, the dehydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reaction are integrated in one-pot with lignin itself as a hydrogen donor. This study shows a promising way of supplying phenolic compounds by taking advantages of both renewable biomass feedstocks and photoenergy.

Abstract:Lignin, the only large-volume sustainable source of aromatic biopolymer in nature, is an attractive feedstock for the production of functional materials. However, considering its high reactivity, lignin is difficult to extract without avoiding uncontrolled degradation and condensation, which significantly impedes the upgrading of the extracted lignin into high-valued materials. Deep eutectic solvents (DES), as an emerging solvent choice, have driven innumerable advances in sustainable biorefinery, especially in lignin fractionation and valorization. Due to their property tunability and high lignin solubility, lignin modification with DES is an appealing approach to boost the extracted lignin’s reactivity and compatibility with polymers. This review systematically summarizes the latest progress of DES in lignin modification and further upgrading into functional materials.
