Abstract:Gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) are a type of emerging ECL emitter with molecule-like properties and low toxicity that hold great potential for sensing application. However, the application of Au NCs in ECL sensing is still limited due to their low ECL efficiency. In this work, we provided an effective way to enhance the ECL efficiency of Au NCs. By doping Ag on GSH-protected Au NCs to form bimetallic clusters (GSH-Ag/Au NCs), the ECL efficiency of Au NCs was greatly improved. Based on the enhanced ECL signal of Au NCs, an ultrasensitive ECL sensor was constructed for the detection of dopamine (DA). DA exhibited a prominent ECL quenching effect towards the formed bimetallic GSH-Ag/Au NCs which can be used for DA detection. The proposed ECL sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity, selectivity and stability and had a wide linear range from 10 nM to 1 mM with a low detection limit of 2.3 nM (S/N = 3). More importantly, this work provided a potential method to improve the ECL properties of Au NCs and widen their analytical application.
Archaea-Inspired Switchable Nanochannels for On-Demand Lithium Detection by pH Activation

Abstract:With the rapid development of the lithium ion battery industry, emerging lithium (Li) enrichment in nature has attracted ever-growing attention due to the biotoxicity of high Li levels. To date, fast lithium ion (Li+) detection remains urgent but is limited by the selectivity, sensitivity, and stability of conventional technologies based on passive response processes. In nature, archaeal plasma membrane ion exchangers (NCLX_Mj) exhibit Li+-gated multi/monovalent ion transport behavior, activated by different stimuli. Inspired by NCLX_Mj, we design a pH-controlled biomimetic Li+-responsive solid-state nanochannel system for on-demand Li+ detection using 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (HPBO) units as Li+ recognition groups. Pristine HPBO is not reactive to Li+, whereas negatively charged HPBO enables specific Li+ coordination under alkaline conditions to decrease the ion exchange capacity of nanochannels. On-demand Li+ detection is achieved by monitoring the decline in currents, thereby ensuring precise and stable Li+ recognition (>0.1 mM) in the toxic range of Li+ concentration (>1.5 mM) for human beings. This work provides a new approach to constructing Li+ detection nanodevices and has potential for applications of Li-related industries and medical services.
A Lithops-Like Pt Nanorods Modified Microelectrode Array For Cellular Atp Release Detection

Abstract:Cellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) release detection is of great significance due to its signaling function. A triple-enzyme microelectrode array ATP biosensor was developed by the co-immobilization of glucose oxidase, hexokinase and horseradish peroxidase. To increase the surface area, improve the sensitivity and lower the limit of detection, Lithops-like Pt nanorods based on Au spikes were fabricated for the detection of cellular ATP release. The proposed MEA integrated with the Lithops-like Pt nanorods can be used for real-time measurement of local ATP release from single cells. The results will contribute to the determination of other neurotransmitters and cell secretions at the single cell level.
Smartphone-based Battery-Free and Flexible Electrochemical Patch for Calcium and Chloride Ions Detections in Biofluids

Abstract:Last decade has seen a growing trend toward smartphone-based biochemical sensing systems. Meanwhile, flexible electrochemical sensing devices like wristbands, patches, and tattoos have been widely developed for in situ detections of analyzes in accessible biofluids. For these devices, the connectivity with smartphone and the flexibility of the whole device are hard to achieve at the same time, due to the need for rigid batteries or wired connections. Here, a smartphone-based battery-free and flexible electrochemical patch is developed for real-time calcium and chloride ions detections in various biofluids. The patch is integrated with near field communication (NFC) module, on-site signal processing circuitry, and an all-printed stretchable electrode array which can maintain stable conductivity during stretching, without the need for serpentine designs. The device enables wireless power harvesting, on-site signal processing, and wireless data transmission capabilities. NFC-enabled smartphones can wirelessly power the patch and get the detection results through inductive coupling between antennas. The calcium and chloride sensors showed good sensitivity, repeatability, selectivity, and stability in quantitative detections of target ions. Ex situ measurements in serum, urine, tear, and sweat demonstrated good consistency with specialized instrument. Real-time on-body sweat analysis with the patch was also performed, which further indicated the usability and stability of the device in wearable applications. This platform provides a battery-free, wireless, and flexible solution for smartphone-based electrochemical sensing systems, which can be applied to rapid analysis of various biofluids.
Facile construction of ATE-based FRET nanoprobe for ratiometric imaging of hypochlorite in live cells

Abstract:Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) nanoprobes based on aggregated induced emission (AIE) molecules are promising for the monitoring of biomolecules in living cells, but this nanoprobe for reactive oxygen species (ROS) has rarely been reported. Here, a novel AIE-based FRET nanoparticles (NPs) is developed for ratiometric detection and imaging of hypochlorite in live cells. Different to common FRET-based nanosensors, the NPs is prepared via facile co-assembly strategy in water using amphiphilic tetraphenylethene (TPE1, energy donor) and thienyl-diketopyrrolopyrmle (NDPP, energy acceptor). This hybrid NPs are uniform spherical, with size of approximately 120 nm. NDPP maintains bright fluorescence inside the hybrid NPs and acts as the reactive unit for hypochlorite in this FRET nanosystem. As a ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe, the hybrid NPs shows high selectivity to hypochlorite with a detection limit calculated to be 105 nM, thanks to its stable particle size in hypochlorite sensing. Furthermore, the successful ratiometric fluorescent imaging of ClO- in HeLa cells demonstrates that our NPs can effectively pass through the cell membrane and recognize the ClO- in living cells.
Highly Selective Electroanalysis for Chloride Ions by Conductance Signal Outputs of Solid-State AgCl Electrochemistry Using Silver-Melamine Nanowires

Abstract:Silver (Ag)-melamine (MA) nanowires were fabricated by the controlled supramolecular self-assembly with conductive hollow Q-graphene (QG) scaffolds to be modified onto the electrodes for sensing chloride ions. Once adding Cl- ions, the QG@MA-Ag modified electrodes, which might otherwise display an Ag oxidization peak at about 0.29 V, could exhibit stable and sharp peaks of solid-state Ag/AgCl electrochemistry at lowering potentials approaching to zero. Moreover, both of the Cl- responses of currents (I) and voltages (V) could vary rationally depending on Cl- concentrations. The responses in conductance (I/V) were thereby conversed alternatively as the signal outputs to ensure the highly selective detection of Cl- ions, with no significant interference from other kinds of halogen ions. The as-developed electroanalysis strategy can facilitate the evaluation of Cl- ions over a broad linear concentration range of 0.25 mu M-250 mM, with the detection limit down to 0.16 mu M. The feasibility of the chloride sensor was subsequently demonstrated in probing Cl- ions separately in sweat and hela cells. Such a detection method with the signal outputs of conductance may feature a new electroanalysis format tailored for highly selective and ultrasensitive analysis of trace-level Cl- ions for the early diagnosis of chloride-indicative diseases.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a facile method to fabricate silver nanowire array electrodes (SNAE) with ultra-high detection sensitivity to chloropropanol in the aqueous solution. Silver nanowire arrays were assembled in conventional anodic alumina membranes (AAM) by electrochemical deposition. Subsequently, silver nanowire arrays with an aspect ratio of 5 similar to 6 were deposited on the bottom of AAM. After a complete removal of the AAM, the grown arrays were used as working electrodes in a three-electrode cell. The electrochemical activity of SNAE was tested in the 0.1 mol/L NaClO4 aqueous solution using chloropropanol as analyte by a cyclic voltammetry method. The results show that SNAE display a distinct reduction peak at -1.011 V (vs. SCE) for chloropropanol and the linear dependencies of current on chloropropanol concentration were obtained within the concentration range 1.8 x 10(-7)similar to 2 x 10(-6) mol/L. The detection limit of chloropropanol was 10(-9) mol/L, which is significantly lower than that of their bulk counterparts. In short, SNAE show great potential in the determination of trace chloropropanol.
Ag Nanoparticles Decorated into Metal-Organic Framework (ag NPs/ZIF-8) for Electrochemical Sensing of Chloride Ion

Abstract:In this work, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were decorated into the cavities of ZIF-8 to fabricate a novel Ag NPs/ZIF-8 modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for electrochemical sensing of chloride ion. Benefiting from the synergistic properties of ZIF-8 and Ag NPs, the Ag NPs/ZIF-8/GCE showed favorable performance towards chloride ion. For comparison, the electrochemical activity of Ag NPs wrapped by ZIF-8 (Ag NPs@ZIF-8) and Ag NPs coating on ZIF-8 (Ag NPs-on-ZIF-8) were also investigated and it was found that Ag NPs/ZIF-8 possessed the best performance. Some experimental parameters including pH of the supporting electrolyte and scan rate were also investigated. Under optimal conditions, the proposed sensor exhibited excellent stability, reproducibility and selectivity for the determination of chloride ion with a wide linear detection range from 5 to 4000 mu mol dm(-3) and a low detection limit of 0.61 mu mol dm(-3) (S/N = 3). The proposed sensor was successfully applied to the determination of chloride ion spiked in human serum. All these results indicated that the developed Ag NPs/ZIF-8/GCE sensor was superior.

Abstract:In this paper, a silver ion-selective electrode material with lower detection limit is presented. The electrode is based on 22.5As 2 S 3 -22.5Ag 2 S-55AgCl chalcohalide glass membranes. The low detection limit decreases from the micromolar range of the original Ag 2 S-As 2 S 3 electrode to the nanomolar level (1.89 nM) by introducing AgCl. The addition of AgCl increases the conductivity of the glasses and improves the analytical properties of electrodes because of the joint effects of Ag + and Cl - on network structure of the glass. The super-Nernstian response behavior was observed for the partially crystallized electrode. The electrode containing AgCl also possesses a high selectivity (except for Hg 2+ ), fast response and good stability.
Polypyrrole deposited on the core-shell structured nitrogen-doped porous carbon@Ag-MOF for signal amplification detection of chloride ions

Abstract:An electrochemical platform for signal amplification probing chloride ions (Cl-) is constructed by the composite integrating core-shell structured nitrogen-doped porous carbon@Ag-based metal-organic frameworks (NC@Ag-MOF) with polypyrrole (PPy). It is based on the signal of solid-state AgCl derived from Ag-MOF, since both NC and PPy have good electrical conductivity and promote the electron transport capacity of solid-state AgCl. NC@Ag-MOF was firstly synthesized with NC as the scaffold and then, PPy was anchored on NC@Ag-MOF by chemical polymerization. The composite NC@Ag-MOF-PPy was utilized to modify the electrode, which exhibited a higher peak current and lower peak potential during Ag oxidation compared with those of Ag-MOF and NC@Ag-MOF-modified electrodes. More importantly, in the coexistence of chloride (Cl-) ions in solution, the NC@Ag-MOF-PPy-modified electrode displayed a fairly stable and sharp peak of solid-state AgCl with the peak potentials gradually approaching zero, which might effectively overcome the background interference caused by electroactive substances. The oxidation peak currents of solid-state AgCl increased linearly with the concentration of Cl- ions in a broad range of 0.15 µM-40 mM and 40-250 mM, with detection limits of 0.10 µM and 40 mM, respectively. The practical applicability for Cl- ions determination was demonstrated using human serum and urine samples. The results suggest that NC@Ag-MOF-PPy composite could be a promising candidate for the construction of the electrochemical sensor.
Study of a novel fabrication method of 3D Ag-based nanoporous structures for electrochemical detection

Abstract:In this paper, a novel two-step facile strategy was first proposed to fabricate nanoporous Ag (NP-Ag) and nanoporous Ag/AgCl (NP-Ag/AgCl) materials to simplify manufacturing procedure, shorten processing time, and optimize experiment condition. Co-electrodeposition of AgSn alloy on the interdigital gold electrode (IGE) and subsequent electrochemical dealloying in HCl solution by applying different potentials. The surface morphologies as well as the electrochemical characterizations of the fabricated NP-Ag and NP-Ag/AgCl IGEs were investigated. The fabricated NP-Ag IGEs were evaluated as biomolecules simultaneous electrochemical sensors for determination of acetaminophen (AC) and dopamine (DA). In addition, the performance of the fabricated NP-Ag/AgCl IGEs, as micro-size reference electrodes, were studied. The NP-Ag electrodes were found promising linear current response to AC (correlation coefficient, R2 = 0.9906) and DA (correlation coefficient, R2 = 0.9961), under the concentration ranges from 0.5 to 290 μM and 0.25 to 500 μM, respectively. Moreover, the fabricated NP-Ag/AgCl IGEs were possessed of enhanced stability and miniature size as pseudo-reference electrodes (p-REs) in contrast with commercial p-REs, which benefiting from abundant ion-exchange sites and quantities of nanochannels on the sponge-like surface. Results demonstrated the innovative surface modification of as-synthesized NP-Ag and NP-Ag/AgCl have positive implication for massive production of nanoporous Ag-based materials and the utilization of prospective point-of-care testing.

Abstract:Luminescent Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) are a promising probe material for sensing and bioimaging applications. However, the intrinsic obstacle of poor water stability and photostability greatly restrict their practical application in biological systems. Herein, we report the intracellular hypochlorite (ClO−) detection with amphiphilic copolymer-modified luminescent Ag NCs with good biocompatibility and photostability. The Ag NCs were synthesized by using chemically inert hydrophobic ligands and then modified with an amphiphilic (1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[methoxy(poly(ethylene glycol))-2000]) (DSPE-PEG-2000) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) for phase transfer. It was found that the approach of the removal of organic solvents during the phase transfer has remarkable influences on the properties of the Ag NCs, including their size, luminescence property, and aqueous stability. Furthermore, the silver core of Ag NCs could be oxidatively damaged by ClO−, thereby causing photoluminescence (PL) quenching. The ClO−-induced PL quenching was specific over the other common reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as some common interferences. Finally, they have been successfully applied as a fluorescent nanoprobe for detecting exogenous and endogenous ClO− in living cells.

Abstract:This study presents a simple approach to fabricating a hollow dendritic Au/Pd/Ag electrode through a galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) in a choline chloride-ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent. The resulting electrode's morphological, structural, and compositional features were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS techniques, with the XPS depth profile providing insights into metal content ratio variations along the electrode's depth. The results emphasize the significant impact of immersion time on both morphological evolution and composition. Cyclic voltammetry investigations revealed significantly enhanced current density in furaltadone (FTD) detection compared to bimetallic and single metallic electrodes. The proposed electrochemical sensor exhibited a dynamic linear range for FTD spanning 1.67–625 μM, accompanied by a low detection limit of 91.7 nM, as confirmed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) quantitative experiments. The selectivity, reproducibility, stability, and recovery of the as-prepared sensors were evaluated, particularly in aquaculture water samples, underscoring the practical applicability of the electrodes for furaltadone sensing. This innovative trimetallic electrode design opens avenues for advanced electrochemical sensors with enhanced performance characteristics.

Abstract:A novel method for sensitive determination of chloride anion at multilayer nano-silver modified indiumtin oxide (ITO) electrode has been developed. The multilayer films were fabricated via self-assembly/electrochemical-assembly methods, in which the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) was used to modify ITO conducting glass, layer-by-layer (LBL) method was applied to prepare the multilayer films and poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) was employed as a bridging ligand. The resulting electrode (Ag/{PDDA/Ag}(m)/APTS/ITO) surface was characterized with SEM and UV-vis. The electrochemical behavior of Cl- at the Ag/{PDDA/Ag}(m)/APTS/ITO electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry. The results indicated that the modified electrode exhibited substantial enhancement in electrochemical sensitivity for Cl- due to its large surface area and particular absorbability. The Ag/{PDDA/Ag}(m)/APTS/ITO electrode detected Cl- by voltammetry based on the oxidation of Ag/Cl- that generated from a specific reaction of chloride ions with nano-silver. After accumulation of 3 min for Cl- at Ag/{PDDA/Ag}(m)/APTS/ITO electrode, the peak height (Ag/Cl-) increased linearly with the concentrations of Cl- in the range of 1.0 x 10(-8)-1.0 x 10(-6) mol L-1. The detection limit was 5.2 x 10(-9) mol L-1 at 3 sigma level. This modified electrode could be successfully applied in water samples with low cost and high sensitivity. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Long-Term Quantitatively Imaging Intracellular Chloride Concentration Using a Core-/Shell-Structured Nanosensor and Time-Domain Dual-Lifetime Referencing Method

Abstract:Luminescence lifetime-based nanosensors for chloride ions were designed by incorporating a luminescent ruthenium dye [Ru(1,10-phenanthroline)3] inside silica nanoparticles and chemically labelling their outer surface with chloride ion-sensitive fluorescent dyes (N,N′-bis(carboxypropyl)-9,9′-biacridine). The nanosensor surface was further functionalized with positively charged amino groups to facilitate intracellular uptake via endocytosis and target lysosomes. The nanosensors have an average diameter of 52 nm and are monodispersed in aqueous solutions. Because of the long lifetime of the reference ruthenium dye, the sensor response can be analyzed using the time-domain dual-lifetime referencing (td-DLR) approach. The use of pulsed excitation in td-DLR rather than intense continuous illumination in ratiometric measurements greatly prevents the dye from photobleaching which significantly improves its measurement stability and reproducibility for long-term monitoring. At optimum conditions, the sensor can measure chloride concentration in the range of 0–200 mM with a large ratiometric signal change from 140.9 to 40.2. Abstract:The porous g-C3N4 (PCN) nanosheets are successfully synthesized and further modified with nano-sized Ag by a simple wet-chemical process. Interestingly, the Ag-modified porous g-C3N4 (Ag-PCN) nanosheets exhibit competitive fluorescence detection performance of chloride ion (Cl−) in aqueous solution. Under the optimized conditions, the concentration of Cl− could be quantitative analyzed with the Ag-PCN in a wide detection range from 0.5 mmol/L to 0.1 mol/L, with a low detection limitation of 0.06 mmol/L. It is confirmed that the fluorescence of PCN could be effectively decayed by the photoinduced charge transfer via the adsorbed Cl− for trapping holes, mainly by means of the time-resolved fluorescence and surface photovoltage spectra. The porous structure and modified Ag promote the adsorption of Cl− on resulting Ag-PCN, leading to excellent fluorescence detection for Cl−. This work provides a feasible route to develop a fluorescence detection of Cl− with g-C3N4 nanosheets in environment water.

Abstract:In this work, we developed a highly selective detector towards the antibiotic drug chloramphenicol (CAP) using Co nanoparticle, which are grown in situ on N-doped carbon nanotube polyhedra (Co@NCNP), which are obtained by a pyrolysis strategy derived from core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67. Physical characterization verified that metal-organic framework (MOFs)-derived Co@NCNP nanocomposites present a nanotube structure on their mesoporous polyhedron surface. As a result, the as-prepared Co@NCNP can be used as a sensitive electrochemical sensor for chloramphenicol detection, and the modified electrode is also studied by electrochemical methods such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). When compared with single ZIF-67-derived electrode, the Co@NCNP displays a higher electrocatalytic activity in the presence of chloramphenicol. Moreover, an excellent performance with a linear response range of 5-268.83 mu M and a low detection limit of 0.5 mu M (S/N=3) is observed for the Co@NCNP modified electrode. Finally, the fabricated chloramphenicol sensor achieves a good anti-interference ability, stability, excellent repeatability, and remarkable reproducibility. The sensor also could be applied in human serum to determine of chloramphenicol with a satisfactory result.

Abstract:A microelectrode array has been applied for single cell analysis with relatively high throughput; however, the cells were typically cultured on the microelectrodes under cell-size microwell traps leading to the difficulty in the functionalization of an electrode surface for higher detection sensitivity. Here, nanoring electrodes embedded under the microwell traps were fabricated to achieve the isolation of the electrode surface and the cell support, and thus, the electrode surface can be modified to obtain enhanced electrochemical sensitivity for single cell analysis. Moreover, the nanometer-sized electrode permitted a faster diffusion of analyte to the surface for additional improvement in the sensitivity, which was evidenced by the electrochemical characterization and the simulation. To demonstrate the concept of the functionalized nanoring electrode for single cell analysis, the electrode surface was deposited with prussian blue to detect intracellular hydrogen peroxide at a single cell. Hundreds of picoamperes were observed on our functionalized nanoring electrode exhibiting the enhanced electrochemical sensitivity. The success in the achievement of a functionalized nanoring electrode will benefit the development of high throughput single cell electrochemical analysis.
