Abstract:Manufacturers face challenges in competitiveness due to rapid technological innovations and shortages of skilled workers. A human-centric adaptive manufacturing approach is presented to address these challenges through coevolution of human skills and system capabilities via human-machine collaboration and on-site upskilling. The level of adaptation is conceptualized according to challenges, enablers, and human roles. Optimization models are used to adapt the design, configuration, and operation of systems around human skills, and a deep reinforcement learning model is employed to learn the optimal policy to integrate the adaptation and upskilling activities. The methodology shows good performance when assessed in an industrial-scale use case.

Abstract:Over the last 70 years, human factors, a term that is used synonymously with ergonomics and denoted as human factors ergonomics (HFE), has been evolving as a unique and independent discipline that originated with a focus on the nature of human–artifact interactions. The HFE discipline advocates systematic use of the knowledge concerning the relevant human characteristics in order to achieve compatibility in the design of interactive systems of people, machines, environments, and devices of all kinds to ensure specific goals. Ergonomics design is concerned with the ability to implement knowledge about human–system interactions and use them to develop systems that satisfy customer needs and relevant human compatibility requirements. Ergonomics literacy prepares individuals to perform their roles in the workplace and outside the working environment. One important subdiscipline of HFE with respect to the central focus of the management discipline is macroergonomics.

Abstract:We examine the nexus of leadership and flow through the lens of two inherently positive psychological leadership approaches. In so doing, we examine how leaders can craft conditions to make work more conducive to followers' flow, and the beneficial effects this has on well-being and performance. Data were collected from 40 employees who completed an initial survey and subsequent daily surveys over two weeks (273 data points). Results from hierarchical linear modeling (level-1 days; level-2 persons) suggest that transformational leaders and leader-member exchange (LMX) relationships impact employees' work characteristics, subsequently impacting daily flow. In turn, followers' daily flow predicted daily psychological well-being and performance on subsequent days, further evidencing the downstream importance of flow-facilitative leader behaviors. Both transformational leadership and LMX were also found to predict psychological well-being through leaders' impact on flow preconditions and flow itself in a full multi-stage mediation model.

Abstract:In this article, an analytical method is introduced to evaluate the flow time of an assembly process with collaborative robots. In such a process, an operator and a collaborative robot can independently carry out preparation tasks first, then they work jointly to finish the assembly operations. To study the productivity performance of such systems, a stochastic process model is developed, where the joint work is modeled as an assembly merge process, and the task times of all operation steps are described by phase-type distributions. Closed-form solutions of system performance, such as flow time expectation and variability, as well as service rate, are derived analytically. The system properties of monotonicity, work allocation, and bottleneck identification are investigated. In addition, a case study is introduced to evaluate the performance of a front panel assembly process in automotive manufacturing.

Abstract:Companies are used to bringing in customers to participate in focus groups, usability laboratories, and market research surveys in order to help in the development of new products and services. And for improving products that customers know well, those tools are highly sophisticated. For example, knowledgeable customers are adept at identifying the specific scent of leather they expect in a luxury vehicle or at helping to tune the sound of a motorcycle engine to just the timbre that evokes feelings of power. But to go beyond improvements to the familiar, companies need to identify and meet needs that customers may not yet recognize. To accomplish that task, a set of techniques called empathic design can help. Rather than bring the customers to the company, empathic design calls for company representatives to watch customers using products and services in the context of their own environments. By doing so, managers can often identify unexpected uses for their products, just as the product manager of a cooking oil did when he observed a neighbor spraying the oil on the blades of a lawn mower to reduce grass buildup. They can also uncover problems that customers don't mention in surveys, as the president of Nissan Design did when he watched a couple struggling to remove the backseat of a competitor's minivan in order to transport a couch. The five-step process Dorothy Leonard and Jeffrey Rayport describe in detail is a relatively low-cost, low-risk way to identify customer needs, and it has the potential to redirect a company's existing technological capabilities toward entirely new businesses.

Abstract:Industry 4 (I4) was a revolutionary new stage for technological progress in manufacturing which promised a new level of interconnectedness between a diverse range of technologies. Sensors, as a point technology, play an important role in these developments, facilitating human-machine interaction and enabling data collection for system-level technologies. Concerns for human labour working in I4 environments (e.g., health and safety, data generation and extraction) are acknowledged by Industry 5 (I5), an update of I4 which promises greater attention to human-machine relations through a values-driven approach to collaboration and co-design. This article explores how engineering experts integrate values promoted by policy-makers into both their thinking about the human in their work and in their writing. This paper demonstrates a novel interdisciplinary approach in which an awareness of different disciplinary epistemic values associated with humans and work guides a systematic literature review and interpretive coding of practice-focussed engineering papers. Findings demonstrate evidence of an I5 human-centric approach: a high value for employees as "end-users" of innovative systems in manufacturing; and an increase in output addressing human activity in modelling and the technologies available to address this concern. However, epistemic publishing practices show that efforts to increase the effectiveness of manufacturing systems often neglect worker voice.

Abstract:Information and communication technology (ICT) is getting smaller and faster at a dashing pace and is increasingly pervading production technology. This penetration of ICT within and across production technology enables companies to aggregate and utilize massive amounts of data of production processes, both horizontally (across different products) and vertically (from machine level, over the shop floor, to the supply chain level). Presumably, this yields in Smart Factories with adaptable manufacturing processes that adjust to different goals, such as performance, product quality, or resource efficiency. But the increasing amount of available data also raises considerable challenges: Strategic decisions still depend on humans in the loop who have to perceive and process increasingly complex multi dimensional data sets and to make decisions whose effects are increasingly difficult to forecast. This paper is concerned with the potential of the human factor. Along with three case studies, we demonstrate the potential of human factors in the development of applications for Smart Factories and enterprises in the era of Industry 4.0. The paper concludes with a set of guidelines and methods for the user-centred development of applications for Industry 4.0.

Abstract:This study investigates the issue of task allocation in Human-Machine Collaboration (HMC) within the context of Industry 4.0. By integrating philosophical insights and cognitive science, it clearly defines two typical modes of human behavior in human-machine interaction(HMI): skill-based intuitive behavior and knowledge-based intellectual behavior. Building on this, the concept of 'intuitive interaction flow' is innovatively introduced by combining human intuition with machine humanoid intelligence, leading to the construction of a dual-loop HMC task allocation model. Through comparative experiments measuring electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) activities, distinct physiological patterns associated with these behavior modes are identified, providing a preliminary foundation for future adaptive HMC frameworks. This work offers a pathway for developing intelligent HMC systems that effectively integrate human intuition and machine intelligence in Industry 4.0.

Abstract:For decades, studies have been conducted to understand and improve how humans and machines interact; yet, the process systems engineering field often focuses on algorithms that do not explicitly account for human actions in the decision-making process. The article presents a broad view of Human-in-The-Loop (HiTL) technology: how HiTL is viewed by different disciplines, the role of cognitive science in understanding fundamental aspects of human factors and human-machine interaction, which are questions that remain open-ended, and how manufacturing should include a more technologically updated and ethical use of human factors to realize the true potential of Industry 4.0. A Smart Control Room framework is presented with preliminary results and future directions to explicitly consider the HiTL in process operations.

Abstract:Human resource is an indispensible element of industrial engineering. Based on Neuro-Industrial-Engineering, we combine the cognitive neuroscience and information technology with cybernetics, and advance a new intelligent human-machine system. Starting with neurophysiological signal (such as electroencephalogram) collection, the system is capable of real-time monitoring and online assessment of the workers’ physiological states. Based on the physiological information and the production information, the system could detect the bottleneck of the assembly line and realize automatic control of the assembly line’s flow velocity. It largely enhances the response speed of the system, and increase the productivity as well as product quality, which is much more effective than the Toyota system in which the assembly line is only stopped when a specific production accident has been detected during production.

Abstract:The paper discusses a methodology to allocate functions to people and/or machines based upon the requirements of the tasks to be performed and the capabilities of each system. Although function allocation has been addressed within the human factors community for many years, the approach discussed offers two primary advances in the context of manufacturing and assembly systems. First, the state-of-the-art in automated systems, robotics, flexible manufacturing systems, methods analysis and human factors are integrated into a multi-disciplinary approach. Second, the methodology will provide manufacturing engineers with an easily understood procedure for assigning tasks to the appropriate system on cost/capability basis.

Abstract:Flow is an optimal mental state of being completely involved in one's activities. This correlational study explored an important, but rarely validated performance model in the workplace-flow. Building on the JD-R theory we recognized three key prerequisites of flow-servant leadership, work-life balance, and mindfulness. We analyzed 987 survey responses from two industries (service and manufacturing) in China. The study discovered that servant leadership, mindfulness, and work-life balance correlate with individual flow as key prerequisites. Further we discovered that the relationship between mindfulness and flow is moderated by the industry. Particularly, data from the manufacturing industry showed a positive relationship between mindfulness and flow but a negative relationship among service employees. Implications for performance and applied psychology research, theory, and practice are discussed.

Abstract:The way humans and artificially intelligent machines interact is undergoing a dramatic change. This change becomes particularly apparent in domains where humans and machines collaboratively work on joint tasks or objects in teams, such as in industrial assembly or disassembly processes. While there is intensive research work on human–machine collaboration in different research disciplines, systematic and interdisciplinary approaches towards engineering systems that consist of or comprise human–machine teams are still rare. In this paper, we review and analyze the state of the art, and derive and discuss core requirements and concepts by means of an illustrating scenario. In terms of methods, we focus on how reciprocal trust between humans and intelligent machines is defined, built, measured, and maintained from a systems engineering and planning perspective in literature. Based on our analysis, we propose and outline three important areas of future research on engineering and operating human–machine teams for trusted collaboration. For each area, we describe exemplary research opportunities.

Abstract:<p>The implementation of ergonomics in manufacturing to reduce injuries and improve efficiencies requires communication between safety, quality and production professionals. While many ergonomic assessment tools provide indications of risk and suggestions for improvement, few have linked quality and production. Today Lean and Six Sigma are common continuous improvement methods that are utilized in various industries. This article describes a newly developed system that incorporates safety and ergonomics with continuous improvement for better solutions. It incorporates a training program that includes four key tools that can be used alone, together, or within a Lean/Six Sigma structure. Although evaluated at manufacturing sites, this program has the potential to be applicable to other industries, such as healthcare and construction.</p>

Abstract:Experts offer strategies for managing people in technocentric times. In these technocentric times, it is more important than ever to manage people well. Companies—employees and managers—may feel overwhelmed by the never-ending disruptions caused by new technologies. This volume in the Digital Future of Management series shows why we should step back, take stock, and seize just a bit more control over how our world is evolving. In Why Humans Matter More Than Ever, management experts from both industry and academia offer strategies for managing people in our brave new digital world. The contributors explain how new technologies, even the most sophisticated artificial intelligence agents, depend on human collaboration. Companies need to develop rules, principles, and clear ethical guidelines that structure smart object–human interactions. Abstract:Smart manufacturing is characterized by self-organizing manufacturing systems and processes that can respond to dynamic changes. We envision the rapid advancement of smart machines with empathy skills will enable anthropocentric human-machine teams that can maximize human flexibility and wellness at work while maintaining the required manufacturing productivity and stability. In this paper, we present a future-proofing human-machine symbiosis framework that features human centrality, social wellness, and adaptability. The essential technical challenges and methods are discussed in detail.
The Secrets of Great Teamwork

Abstract:Over the years, as teams have grown more diverse, dispersed, digital, and dynamic, collaboration has become more complex. But though teams face new challenges, their success still depends on a core set of fundamentals. As J. Richard Hackman, who began researching teams in the 1970s, discovered, what matters most isn't the personalities or behavior of the team members; it's whether a team has a compelling direction, a strong structure, and a supportive context. In their own research, Haas and Mortensen have found that teams need those three "enabling conditions" now more than ever. But their work also revealed that today's teams are especially prone to two corrosive problems: "us versus them" thinking and incomplete information. Overcoming those pitfalls requires a new enabling condition: a shared mindset. This article details what team leaders should do to establish the four foundations for success. For instance, to promote a shared mindset, leaders should foster a common identity and common understanding among team members, with techniques such as "structured unstructured time." The authors also describe how to evaluate a team's effectiveness, providing an assessment leaders can take to see what's working and where there's room for improvement.
