Abstract:We reviewed the available literature on measuring human performance to evaluate human-system interfaces (HSIs), focused on high-fidelity simulations of industrial process control systems, to identify best practices and future directions for research and operations. We searched the available literature and then conducted in-depth review, structured coding, and analysis of 49 articles, which described 42 studies. Human performance measures were classified across six dimensions: task performance, workload, situation awareness, teamwork/collaboration, plant performance, and other cognitive performance indicators. Many studies measured performance in more than one dimension, but few studies addressed more than three dimensions. Only a few measures demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability, validity, and sensitivity in the reviewed studies in this research domain. More research is required to assess the measurement qualities of the commonly used measures. The results can provide guidance to direct future research and practice for human performance measurement in process control HSI design and deployment.

Abstract:High-end equipment with robust and excellent performance is of great significance to manufacturing automation systems. Product parameters are the foundation of performance. Usually, there is a lack of clear physical models to reveal the relationship between parameters and performance. Simulation is an important way to understand the design results of product performance parameters. However, simulations are often particularly time and resource-consuming. To address these issues, this work proposes a data-mechanism-driven product performance optimization method, which introduces Taguchi' method, nonparametric correlation testing, and multiple attribute decision making (MADM), to efficiently obtain the optimal parameter scheme. A novel MADM method is designed, which is combined with the Multi-Objective Optimization on the basis of a Ratio Analysis plus the full MULTIplicative form (MULTIMOORA) and the Variable Neighborhood Search. It has been proven that it performs better than the MULTIMOORA based on the well-known Simulated Annealing and Tabu search. Finally, taking the cutting unit of EBZ200i as a case study, we have successfully obtained the optimal parameter scheme that comprehensively performs better in terms of wear performance, robustness, and environmental economic performance.
A Study of Performance Measurement System Implementation in a High Volume Production Line

Abstract:Most managers have heard the platitude "what gets measured gets done", but the fact is that there is little empirical research on what constitutes an effective performance measurement (PM) system. Internal performance measures provide critical infrastructure that allows an operation to 1) document historical performance, 2) indicate current position with respect to operational strategy, 3) predict future performance, and 4) motivate and control behavior. PM system effectiveness can be described as a system's ability to address all of these functions. In order to develop grounded theory in PM system design and analysis, a single longitudinal case study was undertaken on a subassembly process in Hewlett Packard's high volume Inkjet pen cartridge production line in Singapore. A new PM system was introduced to "motivate operators to higher performance, provide for fairness and consistency in salary related performance evaluation, and encourage ownership in the operation". Measures emphasized workcentre yield, output, housekeeping, teamwork, suggestion system participation, quality workmanship, safety, and operator dependability (attendance) at the individual, team, and production line levels. Each operator was provided a monthly evaluation of his or her individual performance based on a point allocation system. Twenty-seven months of pre and post PM system implementation yield and operator productivity data were compared. Overall, production yield showed a significant increase in both level and rate of improvement. The level of operator productivity also improved significantly over the period studied. Individual performance measure effectiveness with respect to causality, improvement, and control were analyzed. Conclusions are drawn on PM system effectiveness from this analysis and feedback from line management. Recommendations are made for a subsequent round of PM system improvements and future research.

Abstract:The study and implementation of ergonomics are vital for the growth of industries and improvement in work cultures. Sustainable manufacturing cannot be achieved without the implementation of human-factor ergonomics. Ergonomics is used to analyze the link between research studies and industrial practices in order to maximize the efficiency of processes by keeping in view the well-being of workforce. Designing tools, tasks, machines, systems, jobs, and settings for efficient, safe, and successful human usage involves applying knowledge about human behavior, abilities, and limitations. Workers are the backbone of the manufacturing economy. The review outlines significant advancements in preventing ergonomic problems during the design stage of the manufacturing process to achieve sustainability. The bibliometric analysis is used to identify the literature base for ergonomics. To maximize the benefits of ergonomics and to integrate sustainable practices, various methods are required to organize existing processes and technologies. The human-centered design identifies problems and aligns the output with the intended objectives of sustainability. The goal of human factors and ergonomics is to successfully integrate people into systems and develop the manufacturing processes around the well-being of workers and sustainability principles. Similarly, ergoecology, eco-ergonomics, and green ergonomics are frequently used for sustainable manufacturing. Achieving sustainability in manufacturing is not possible without considering human ergonomics. Ergonomists frequently research management, planning, and other topics to increase the efficiency of the manufacturing process. Efficient worker performance and quality of life can be enhanced through work design, management, and organizational ergonomics. Human ergonomics relates sustainability with cognitive variables such as situational awareness, human reliability, and decision-making abilities. This review explains the role of human factors and ergonomics for sustainable manufacturing.

Performance management practices in lean manufacturing organizations: a systematic review of research evidence

Abstract:This paper provides the first systematic look into the existing research on performance management (PM) practices employed in lean manufacturing organisations (LMOs). It adopts a systematic review method to examine the evidence generated in the period 2004 – 2015 and uses a comprehensive PM framework to synthesise the findings. The results suggest that PM practices that have the most prominent role in LMOs are those that, firstly, are located closest to front-line actions and, secondly, explicitly address operational realities. This calls into question the primacy of accounting-driven controls in LMOs, suggesting that operational controls may be more effective than top-down accounting-based PM practices. The results also confirm the bias towards operational-level issues but suggest that LMOs may integrate the operational and the strategic levels by using PM practices that drive organisational learning through employee involvement and engagement.

Abstract:Purpose: The correct interaction between the workforce and augmented, virtual, and mixed reality technologies represents a crucial aspect of the success of the smart factory. This interaction is, indeed, affected by the variability of human behavior and its reliability, which can strongly influence the quality, safety, and productivity standards. For this reason, this paper aims to provide a clear and complete analysis of the impacts of these technologies on the performance of operators.Design/methodology/approach: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted to identify peer-reviewed papers that focused on the implementation of augmented and virtual technologies in manufacturing systems and their effects on human performance.Findings: In total, 61 papers were selected and thoroughly analyzed. The findings of this study reveal that Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality can be applied for several applications in manufacturing systems with different types of devices, that involve various advantages and disadvantages. The worker’s performance that are influencing by the use of these technologies are above all time to complete a task, error rate and mental and physical workload. Originality/value: Over the years Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality technologies in manufacturing systems have been investigated by researchers. Several studies mostly focused on technological issues, have been conducted. The role of the operator, whose tasks may be influenced positively or negatively by the use of new devices, has been hardly ever analyzed and a deep analysis of human performance affected by these technologies is missing. This study represents a preliminary analysis to fill this gap. The results obtained from the SLR allowed us to develop a conceptual framework that investigates the current state-of-the-art knowledge about the topic and highlights gaps in the current research.

Abstract:Over the last 70 years, human factors, a term that is used synonymously with ergonomics and denoted as human factors ergonomics (HFE), has been evolving as a unique and independent discipline that originated with a focus on the nature of human–artifact interactions. The HFE discipline advocates systematic use of the knowledge concerning the relevant human characteristics in order to achieve compatibility in the design of interactive systems of people, machines, environments, and devices of all kinds to ensure specific goals. Ergonomics design is concerned with the ability to implement knowledge about human–system interactions and use them to develop systems that satisfy customer needs and relevant human compatibility requirements. Ergonomics literacy prepares individuals to perform their roles in the workplace and outside the working environment. One important subdiscipline of HFE with respect to the central focus of the management discipline is macroergonomics.

Abstract:Human factor is an important issue in industrial engineering system. Mental and physical states in the manufacturing process greatly influence workers performance. In this study, EEG data were recorded to analyze mental workload and EMG data to analyze physical workload when a worker was tasks in the production line. Video camera was used to record the manufacturing process simultaneously. We could detect the time periods within which the workers mental workload or physical workload was at a high level. By tracking the operating process through the video, we were able to find the potential problems leading to high workload, and thus optimize the design of manufacturing process or machine in order to decrease mental and physical workload and improve production efficiency.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to examine, the specific literature related to performance measurement in the service sector. In the process, it also aims to classify and examine innovative approaches and models utilized to measure performance in service operational settings. Based on this investigation, the paper seeks to identify relevant benchmarking implications. Design/methodology/approach A database of 141 peer‐reviewed publications, published between 1981 and early 2008, was utilized for the purpose of this paper. The published works included contributions from both practioners and scholars. Findings The International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management is found to be the leading journal in terms of contributions to performance measurement in service operational settings. It contributed 25 articles. The bulk of published work appeared in international journals. These contributions were mixed in nature. They included empirical, conceptual, case studies, literatures reviews and interviews. The focus of the articles examined was also mixed. These articles tended to emphasis operational, customer, strategic, supplier, and environmental aspects of service. Research limitations/implications Based on the findings of this paper, it is concluded that this area of research is in need of more future efforts aimed at solidifying theoretical constructs and practical applications. Practical implications Findings derived from this investigation have relevant benchmarking implications. In this context, understanding the different approaches to performance measurement as utilized in service organizations is critical to the efforts of these organizations' performance improvement efforts. Originality/value Understanding the types and scopes of the different approaches and models utilized to measure performance in service operational settings is important in light of the growing significance of the service sector.

Abstract:OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONS Employees play critical roles in improving the performance of operation systems. Work-related health disorders and injuries degrade employees' work performance and hence the performance of the system. Previous studies frequently reported the negative effects of poor ergonomic conditions of the workplace on developing occupational health problems. However, managers lack tools to consider occupational ergonomics aspects, employees' health conditions, and their financial consequences when the performance of systems is optimized. This research provides a hierarchical modeling framework to integrate occupational ergonomics aspects into system performance optimization models. With this modeling approach, ergonomists and human factor practitioners can better influence managers' decisions by developing analytical tools that demonstrate the health, economic, and operational improvement of ergonomics conditions in the system-level analysis. TECHNICAL ABSTRACT Background: Occupational illnesses have negative consequences for employees. They also reduce employees' overall work performance, creating negative economic impacts on companies. Occupational ergonomics studies mostly investigate work-related health and safety aspects of a system to reduce the rate of these health problems for employees. However, they do not usually involve optimizing the performance of a system and do not account for the operational aspects of the system such as demand, workstation interactions, and inventory levels. In contrast, operations management studies usually deal with these operational aspects while optimizing the performance of operation systems. Although human resources are involved in many stages of operation systems, operations management performance optimization models usually use simplifying assumptions regarding human operational characteristics. They rarely include causes and effects of work-related health problems. Purpose and Methods: This article introduces a modeling framework, integrating occupational ergonomics aspects into operations management performance optimization models. It provides a road map for assessing the impact of work-related risk factors, including physical and psychosocial aspects on system performance. Results: An illustrative example demonstrates the applicability of the developed framework in a real situation. The results demonstrate a 0.76% to 3.76% cost growth for a manufacturing system due to the poor ergonomic design of the workplace. Conclusion: By applying this framework, practitioners can find out how the performance of their systems will be enhanced by investing in safer working conditions for employees. Managers can also better assess the economic consequences of a poor ergonomic design and consequent occupational illnesses.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to prioritize the factors for the successful implementation of total productive maintenance (TPM). Design/methodology/approach The technique used for prioritization is the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Findings The commitment and involvement of the top management, i.e. the leadership team, is the most critical success factor in the successful implementation of TPM. Employee training is another vital factor. Top management should also encourage a culture favorable for information flow, equipment ownership, the involvement of people and quality management throughout the organization. Research limitations/implications Manufacturing organizations interested in improving productivity through the implementation of TPM should first involve the leadership team and seek their full support and train all the employees in this philosophy. However, the findings cannot be generalized for global application due to the inputs taken from experts in AHP from limited geography. Practical implications Reducing production costs is a universal expectation of business leaders. TPM can be used as a long-term strategy to improve productivity by the organization. Social implications All employees have to be trained in this philosophy, and as part of the training and the implementation of TPM, they feel empowered and committed to the organization. Originality/value This study has illustrated the use of AHP for the prioritization of success factors. Prioritization of success factors will help in strategy formulation by management for effective maintenance. It will help in improving the productivity and performance of the organization.

Abstract:This paper examines the manufacturing performance and management practices of 71 automotive components suppliers located in Europe, Japan and North America. The research reports on the extent to which these plants have adopted 'lean production' practices and tests the proposition that such techniques are linked with high manufacturing performance. The results support the contention that tight process control and closely integrated operations are more productive. However, the data do not support the notion that the work organization and human resource policies associated with the lean production model represent a universal 'best way' for achieving high manufacturing performance. Rather, our findings emphasize the importance of context, specific plant characteristics and choice for understanding the performance of manufacturing organizations.

Abstract:The effects of workforce differences on manufacturing systems have attracted the attention of a wide range of researchers in recent years. The differences between workers in terms of skills, age, gender and anthropometric measures have a large impact on production system performance. In this study, the workforce differences factors in production system design and modelling were investigated, with the aim of understanding how the differences between workers could influence a production system and how they had been considered in previous studies. The papers selected from the Scopus database were categorised based on whether how human factors are incorporated into manufacturing system optimisation and design approaches is discussed therein or is not. To find relevant papers, two sets of keywords were defined: (1) keywords relating to the differences between workers and (2) keywords relating to the kind of problem under study. Furthermore, the investigated papers helped highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the existing literature and derive a discussion on the possible future research steps.

This paper presents a quantitative performance measurement system for the supply chain. From time, quality, cost, and flexibility perspective, performance measures at department, enterprise and supply chain level are proposed. The comprehensive evaluation model is selected in Cobb-Douglas form to reflect the indispensability of each perspective. The key features in human evaluation are uncertainty, inconsistency and dependency, thus a modified fuzzy analytic network process is adopted as the comprehensive method.

Abstract:Abstract The growing emphasis on environmental sustainability has drawn considerable attention from both academia and industry practitioners. Factors such as escalating energy costs, heightened environmental degradation, and a burgeoning market demand for eco-friendly practices have compelled businesses to reassess their strategies through a green lens. Given that Lean principles are rooted in optimising operations to minimise waste across design and production processes, their synergy with the green paradigm is evident. However, despite the intuitive connection between Lean methodologies and environmental sustainability, the scholarly exploration of their impact remains largely underdeveloped. This research seeks to bridge this gap by conducting a comprehensive systematic literature review to dissect the current understanding of Lean manufacturing practices and their influence on environmental sustainability performance. The selected papers were meticulously screened and grouped into three clusters using the PRISMA diagram methodology. The primary objective was to discern the tangible effects of Lean practices on eco-efficiency performance and explore integrating Lean manufacturing principles with broader sustainable manufacturing approaches. A structured matrix was created to categorise and visualise the identified impacts gleaned from the initial articles. Nevertheless, the review revealed significant gaps in understanding, particularly regarding the factors that shape the efficacy of Lean manufacturing tools in enhancing eco-efficiency performance. The findings underscore the need for further research to unravel these complexities and delineate the mechanisms through which Lean practices contribute to environmental sustainability. Several avenues for future research have been delineated, focusing on how Lean manufacturing practices can be leveraged to support eco-efficiency performance effectively. While the preliminary findings shed light on the promising intersection between Lean principles and environmental sustainability, they also underscore the imperative for continued scholarly inquiry to unlock the full potential of Lean methodologies in fostering a greener industrial landscape.

Abstract:Based on long-term industrial practice, our research team addressed economic view to complement the existing CIM system architecture, which is used to measure the relevant performance and has become the annex C of ISO 15704. However the work on economic view issued before mainly focused on the performance framework, in this paper a fuzzy performance modeling process and method is proposed as the further research. Considering the numerous dynamic and subjective indicators of performance, the related fuzzy method that the research largely relies on here is the best choice for its natural advantages in this area. Before the method for fuzzy performance modeling is put forward, the fuzzy performance modeling framework aligned with process and organization model is discussed firstly. Afterwards, a theorem is presented for conflict and redundancy validation of fuzzy rules that is necessary for performance modeling. Finally the fuzzy performance modeling and measurement method are suggested.

Abstract:Management literature has suggested that contextual factors may present strong inertial forces within organizations that inhibit implementations that appear technically rational [R.R. Nelson, S.G. Winter, An Evolutionary Theory of Economic Change, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1982]. This paper examines the effects of three contextual factors, plant size, plant age and unionization status, on the likelihood of implementing 22 manufacturing practices that are key facets of lean production systems. Further, we postulate four “bundles” of inter‐related and internally consistent practices; these are just‐in‐time (JIT), total quality management (TQM), total preventive maintenance (TPM), and human resource management (HRM). We empirically validate our bundles and investigate their effects on operational performance. The study sample uses data from IndustryWeek’s Census of Manufacturers. The evidence provides strong support for the influence of plant size on lean implementation, whereas the influence of unionization and plant age is less pervasive than conventional wisdom suggests. The results also indicate that lean bundles contribute substantially to the operating performance of plants, and explain about 23% of the variation in operational performance after accounting for the effects of industry and contextual factors.

Abstract:Purpose The effectiveness of the Just-in-Time (JIT) production system in non-Japanese contexts is a topic of diverse findings. This study conducts a meta-analysis of empirical research on JIT and its relationship with performance, focusing on studies published since 1995. Additionally, it examines the moderating influence of National Culture (NC) values on JIT outcomes. Design/methodology/approach A total of 59 empirical studies with 211 effects and 17,008 observations from 18 countries are meta-analyzed. A meta-regression using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) is performed to explore how four dimensions of National Culture (NC) moderate the impact. (viz. institutional collectivism, uncertainty avoidance future orientation, and power distance,) based on the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) culture model. Findings The meta-analysis results show that improved production efficiency, product quality and reduced wastes achieved through JIT deployments translate into the overall performance of organizations. The meta-regression results shed light on how local cultures influence the effectiveness of JIT across different countries. Originality/value The findings of meta-analysis have implications for multinational manufacturers in realizing efficacy of JIT. The research adds to the international operations management literature by examining how NC values influence strategies and decisions in operations management.
