Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration that exceeds standards is causing poor air quality in most Chinese cities. Meteorological conditions are an important factor affecting PM2.5 concentration, but few quantitative studies have been conducted on the effects of long-term and large-scale changes in meteorological factors on PM2.5 pollution. In this study, a Weather Research and Forecasting/Community Multiscale Air Quality (WRF/CMAQ) modeling system was applied to study the spatial and temporal distributions of the impact of meteorological conditions on PM2.5 pollution in China from 2000 to 2017. During the study period, Me-PM2.5 decreased in general (P = 0.0018) in nationwide, and showed significant spatiotemporal variations. There was an overall increasing trend for Beijing, Fujian, Shaanxi, Gansu, and Qinghai provinces (P < 0.05) as the meteorological conditions deteriorated, and there was an overall negative trend for nine provinces (P < 0.05) which indicated meteorological conditions were causing a decrease in concentrations. Substantial differences in the impact of meteorological changes on PM2.5 pollution were observed across the provinces, with FMe-PM2.5 (fluctuating range of Me-PM2.5) between 9.3% and 55.1%. In addition, the best, typical, and worst meteorological years were selected based on Me-PM2.5; these should be considered when setting air quality goals and pollution control plans.

Abstract:With the fast development of seaborne trade and relatively more efforts on reducing emissions from other sources in China, shipping emissions contribute more and more significantly to air pollution. In this study, based on a shipping emission inventory with high spatial and temporal resolution within 200 nautical miles (Nm) to the Chinese coastline, the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model was applied to quantify the impacts of the shipping sector on the annual and seasonal concentrations of PM2.5 for the base year 2015 in China. Emissions within 12 Nm accounted for 51.2 %–56.5 % of the total shipping emissions, and the distinct seasonal variations in spatial distribution were observed. The modeling results showed that shipping emissions increased the annual averaged PM2.5 concentrations in eastern China up to 5.2 µg m−3, and the impacts in YRD (Yangtze River Delta) and PRD (Pearl River Delta) were much greater than those in BTH (Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei). Shipping emissions influenced the air quality in not only coastal areas but also the inland areas hundreds of kilometers (up to 960 km) away from the sea. The impacts on the PM2.5 showed obvious seasonal variations, and patterns in the north and south of the Yangtze River were also quite different. In addition, since the onshore wind can carry ship pollutants to inland areas, the daily contributions of shipping emissions in onshore flow days were about 1.8–2.7 times higher than those in the rest of the days. A source-oriented CMAQ was used to estimate the contributions of shipping emissions from maritime areas within 0–12, 12–50, 50–100 and 100–200 Nm to PM2.5 concentrations. The results indicated that shipping emissions within 12 Nm were the dominant contributor, with contributions 30 %–90 % of the total impacts induced by emissions within 200 Nm, while a relatively high contribution (40 %–60 %) of shipping emissions within 20–100 Nm was observed in the north of the YRD region and south of Lianyungang, due to the major water traffic lanes far from land. The results presented in this work implied that shipping emissions had significant influence on air quality in China, and to reduce its pollution, the current Domestic Emission Control Area (DECA) should be expanded to at least 100 Nm from the coastline.

Abstract:Abstract. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is closely linked to human health, with its sources generally divided into local emissions and regional transport. This study combined concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analysis with the HYSPLIT trajectory ensemble to obtain hourly-resolution pollutant source results. The Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model was then employed to simulate local emissions and ambient PM2.5 in Beijing from 2013 to 2020. The results revealed that clean air masses influencing the Beijing area mainly originated from the north and east regions, exhibiting a strong winter and weak summer pattern. Following the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (Action Plan) by the Chinese government in 2017, pollution in Beijing decreased significantly, with the most substantial reduction in regional transport pollution events occurring in the west region during summer. Regional transport pollution events were most frequent in spring, up to 1.8 times higher than in winter. Pollutants mainly originated from the west and south regions, while polluted air masses from the east showed the least reduction, and the proportion of pollution sources from this region is gradually increasing. From 2013 to 2020, local emissions were the main contributors of pollution events in Beijing. The Action Plan has more effectively reduced pollution caused by regional transport, particularly during autumn and winter. This finding underscores the importance of Beijing prioritizing local emission reduction while also considering potential contributions from the east region to effectively mitigate pollution events.

Abstract:The average concentration levels as well as the spatial and temporal differences of PM_(10) and PM_(2.5) of three sites in Beijing were analysed.It shows that the seasonal comparisons in the urban tie with that in the northwest district,but the suburb was different from the urban and the northwest district and the level was the lowest.PM_(2.5) rose according to the PM_(10),but the seasonal comparison was not the same as PM_(10).The ratio of PM_(2.5)/PM_(10) was the highest in the summer at three sites.The level of particles among three sites was the urban>the northwest district>the suburb,besides PM_(10)in the northwest district was more than the urban in the 2006 spring.The analysis results povide basic information and suggestion for further study on particles in the atmosphere.

Abstract:In this study, the seasonal mean PM2.5 concentration in Qingdao, a coastal city, during 2014-2018 was first analyzed and the winter, in particular of 2015, showed the highest concentration. To elucidate the sources and control factors of PM2.5, three dimensional model Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF), Community Multiscale Air Quality model (CMAQ), as well as Flexible Particle model (FLEXPART), were used. During December 2015 and January 2016, modeling results showed that the mean contribution to PM2.5 mass concentrations from local emissions in Qingdao was 25%, and the transport from north and west accounted for almost half. Over the two episodically polluted periods (29-31 December 2015; 15-17 January 2016), the local emissions in Qingdao surprisingly contributed to only 18% and 24% to PM2.5 mass concentrations, respectively, indicating the dominant contributions from other regions, such as areas outside Qingdao in Shandong and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH). The results show the sources region and contribution may vary remarkably along with the change in the pathways of the air parcel, inferred by the FLEXPART, while the near-surface PM2.5 enhancement is largely caused by downward vertical advection and enhanced aerosol chemistry reactions, accompanied by simultaneous drop in the boundary layer height. This study also reveals that the transport contribution is sensitive to the air parcel trajectories. We, therefore, recommend the efficient emission control based on transport trajectories in short-term air quality improvement in Qingdao.
Spatial Distributions and Chemical Properties of PM2.5 Based on 21 Field Campaigns at 17 Sites in China.

Abstract:Severe air pollution and its associated health impacts have become one of the major concerns in China. A detailed analysis of PM2.5 chemical compositions is critical for optimizing pollution control measures. In this study, daily 24-h bulk filter samples were collected and analyzed for totally 21 field campaigns at 17 sites in China between 2008 and 2013. The 17 sites were classified into four groups including six urban sites, seven regional sites, two coastal sites in four fast developing regions of China (i.e. Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Sichuan Basin), and two ship cruise measurements covered the East China Sea and Yellow Sea of China. The high average concentrations of PM2.5 and the occurrences of extreme cases at most sites imply the widespread air pollution in China. Fine particles were largely composed of organic matter and secondary inorganic species at most sites. High correlation between the temporal trends of PM2.5 and secondary species of urban and regional sites highlights the uniformly distributed air pollutants within one region. Secondary inorganic species were the dominant contributors to the high PM2.5 concentration in Northern China. However in Southern China, the relative contributions of different chemical species kept constant as PM2.5 increased. This study provides us a better understanding of the current state of air pollution in diversified Chinese cities. Analysis of chemical signatures of PM2.5 could be a strong support for model validation and emission control strategy.
Source Assessment of Atmospheric Fine Particulate Matter in a Chinese Megacity: Insights from Long-Term, High-Time Resolution Chemical Composition Measurements from Shanghai Flagship Monitoring Supersite

Abstract:Here we present a long-term, hourly resolution dataset (from January 2014 to April 2015) of secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) matter, organic matter (OM) and black carbon (BC) as PM2.5 chemical components in China. Seasonally differentiated weekly diurnal profiles of major particulate species were investigated in conjunction with potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis. The average concentration of PM2.5 was 48.3 +/- 35.1 mu g m(-3), in which OM was the major constituent (29.7 +/- 13.9%), followed by sulfate (25.1 +/- 8.1%), nitrate (18.5 +/- 8.3%), ammonium (13.3 +/- 3.8%), and other trace species (6.8 +/- 4.0%). Interestingly, unlike other PM species, OM concentrations kept very similar level among different seasons, indicating on-road traffic is a stable source of PM2.5. Besides, a persistently strong particulate OM pollution belt was found along the lower reaches of Yangtze River. Significant enhancement of SIA (mainly nitrate) was coincided with high PM2.5 mass loading. Source apportionment were conducted and found the overwhelming dominance of long-range transport of the pollutants from north China. Using a case study, we further integrate Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) meteorological modeling and lidar observation to better understand the evolution process of a typical pollution episode. Our assessment of the extremely large datasets derived from Shanghai supersite demonstrated the online instrumentation as a robust and credible alternative to filter-based sampling techniques for long-term PM2.5 monitoring and characterization in heavily polluted areas. Abstract:During 2001–2006, PM2.5 (particle matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 microns) and PM10 (particle matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 microns) were collected at the Beijng Normal University (BNU) site, China, and in 2006, at a background site in Duolun (DL). The long-term monitoring data of elements, ions, and black carbon showed that the major constituents of PM2.5 were black carbon (BC) crustal elements, nitrates, ammonium salts, and sulfates. These five major components accounted for 20%–80% of the total PM2.5. During this period, levels of Pb and S in PM remained rather high, as compared with the levels in other large cities in the world. Source apportionment results suggest that there were 6 common sources for PM2.5 and PM10, i.e., soil dust, vehicular emission, coal combustion, secondary aerosol, industrial emission, and biomass burning. Coal combustion was the largest contributor of PM2.5 with a percentage of 16.6%, whereas soil dust played the most important role in PM10 with a percentage of 27%. In contrast, only three common types of sources could be resolved at the background DL site, namely, soil dust, biomass combustion, and secondary aerosol from combustion sources.

Simultaneous monitoring and compositions analysis of PM1 and PM2.5 in Shanghai: Implications for characterization of haze pollution and source apportionment

Abstract:A year-long simultaneous observation of PM1 and PM2.5 were conducted at ECUST campus in Shanghai, the compositions were analyzed and compared. Results showed that PM2.5 was dominated by PM1 on clear days while the contribution of PM1-2.5 to PM2.5 increased on haze days, indicating that PM2.5 should be given priority to characterize or predict haze pollution. On haze days, accumulation of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and primary organic carbon (POC) in PM1-2.5 was faster than that in PM1. Humic-like substances carbon (Hulis-C) in both PM2.5 and PM1 formed faster than water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) on haze days, hence Hulis-C/WSOC increased with the intensification of haze pollution. In terms of water soluble ions, NO3(-)/SO4(2-) in PM1 increased with the aggravation of haze pollution, implying that mobile sources dominated on haze days, so is nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR). Liquid water content (LWC) in both PM1 and PM2.5 had positive correlations with relative humidity (RH) but negative correlations with visibility, implying that hygroscopic growth might be a factor for visibility impairment, especially LWC in PM1. By comparison with multi-linear equations of LWC in PM1 and PM2.5, NO3(-) exerted a higher influence on hygroscopicity of PM1 than PM2.5, while RH, WSOC, SO4(2-) and NH4(+) had higher effects on PM2.5, especially WSOC. Source apportionment of PM2.5 was also investigated to provide reference for policy making. Cluster analysis by HYSPLIT (HYbrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) model showed that PM2.5 originated from marine aerosols, middle-scale transportation and large-scale transportation. Furthermore, PM2.5 on haze days was dominated by middle-scale transportation. In line with source apportionment by positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, PM2.5 was attributed to secondary inorganics, aged sea salt, combustion emissions, hygroscopic growth and secondary organics. Secondary formation was the principle source of PM2.5. Furthermore, the contribution of combustion emissions to PM2.5 increased with the intensification of haze pollution, which was just opposite to hygroscopic growth, while that of secondary formation kept quite stable on clear days and haze days.

Separating emission and meteorological contributions to long-term PM2.5 trends over eastern China during 2000–2018

Abstract:Abstract. The contribution of meteorology and emissions to long-term PM2.5 trends is critical for air quality management but has not yet been fully analyzed. Here, we used the combination of a machine learning model, statistical method, and chemical transport model to quantify the meteorological impacts on PM2.5 pollution during 2000–2018. Specifically, we first developed a two-stage machine learning PM2.5 prediction model with a synthetic minority oversampling technique to improve the satellite-based PM2.5 estimates over highly polluted days, thus allowing us to better characterize the meteorological effects on haze events. Then we used two methods to examine the meteorological contribution to PM2.5: a generalized additive model (GAM) driven by the satellite-based full-coverage daily PM2.5 retrievals and the Weather Research and Forecasting/Community Multiscale Air Quality (WRF/CMAQ) modeling system. We found good agreements between GAM estimations and the CMAQ model estimations of the meteorological contribution to PM2.5 on a monthly scale (correlation coefficient between 0.53–0.72). Both methods revealed the dominant role of emission changes in the long-term trend of PM2.5 concentration in China during 2000–2018, with notable influence from the meteorological condition. The interannual variabilities in meteorology-associated PM2.5 were dominated by the fall and winter meteorological conditions, when regional stagnant and stable conditions were more likely to happen and when haze events frequently occurred. From 2000 to 2018, the meteorological contribution became more unfavorable to PM2.5 pollution across the North China Plain and central China but were more beneficial to pollution control across the southern part, e.g., the Yangtze River Delta. The meteorology-adjusted PM2.5 over eastern China (denoted East China in figures) peaked in 2006 and 2011, mainly driven by the emission peaks in primary PM2.5 and gas precursors in these years. Although emissions dominated the long-term PM2.5 trends, the meteorology-driven anomalies also contributed −3.9 % to 2.8 % of the annual mean PM2.5 concentrations in eastern China estimated from the GAM. The meteorological contributions were even higher regionally, e.g., −6.3 % to 4.9 % of the annual mean PM2.5 concentrations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, −5.1 % to 4.3 % in the Fenwei Plain, −4.8 % to 4.3 % in the Yangtze River Delta, and −25.6 % to 12.3 % in the Pearl River Delta. Considering the remarkable meteorological effects on PM2.5 and the possible worsening trend of meteorological conditions in the northern part of China where air pollution is severe and population is clustered, stricter clean air actions are needed to avoid haze events in the future.

From January 2013 to December 2015, aerosol scattering coefficients, PM2.5, and meteorological parameters were continuously measured at a monitoring site in Shanghai, China. The annual means of scattering coefficients were 312.3, 232.1, and 261.9 Mm(-1) for the years 2013, 2014, and 2015, respectively. The corresponding values for PM2.5 were 61.6, 51.6, and 52.9 mu g/m(3). Compared with the average scattering coefficient of the year 2013, those of 2014 and 2015decreased by 26% and 16%, respectively. Furthermore, the annual average PM(2.5 )decreased by 16% and 14% in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Although this study concluded that PM2.5 was generally correlated with scattering coefficients during the entire measurement period, the decrease in the former was much less than the latter. On this basis, ultrafine particles may decrease significantly because they cause aerosol scattering. This finding should be investigated further in the future. The inter-annual meteorological changes affected PM2.5 and scattering coefficient inter-annual variations. In the northwest and southwest direction, the seasonal and diurnal variations of aerosol scattering coefficients showed larger values when the wind speeds were about 3-5 m/s. The serious pollution in the northwest direction were mainly due to long-distance transport of pollutants during winter, whereas those in the southwest direction were attributed to local emission. The westerly wind frequency is the crucial factor influencing local pollution transport significantly. Backward trajectory analysis indicated that the air pollution in Shanghai in 2013 -2015 is attributed to long-distance transport and primarily affected by the air mass from northwest direction. Observations on long-term aerosol optical properties on the basis of in-situ measurements can help thoroughly understand the radiative forcing characteristics of aerosol. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Furthermore, the annual average PM2.5 decreased by 16% and 14% in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Although this study concluded that PM2.5 was generally correlated with scattering coefficients during the entire measurement period, the decrease in the former was much less than the latter. On this basis, ultrafine particles may decrease significantly because they cause aerosol scattering. This finding should be investigated further in the future. The inter-annual meteorological changes affected PM2.5 and scattering coefficient inter-annual variations. In the northwest and southwest direction, the seasonal and diurnal variations of aerosol scattering coefficients showed larger values when the wind speeds were about 3–5 m/s. The serious pollution in the northwest direction were mainly due to long-distance transport of pollutants during winter, whereas those in the southwest direction were attributed to local emission. The westerly wind frequency is the crucial factor influencing local pollution transport significantly. Backward trajectory analysis indicated that the air pollution in Shanghai in 2013–2015 is attributed to long-distance transport and primarily affected by the air mass from northwest direction. Observations on long-term aerosol optical properties on the basis of in-situ measurements can help thoroughly understand the radiative forcing characteristics of aerosol.

Abstract:Condensable particulate matter (CPM) emitted from stationary combustion and mobile sources exhibits high emissions and a large proportion of organic components. However, CPM is not generally measured when conducting emission surveys of PM in most countries, including China. Consequently, previous emission inventories have not included emission rates for CPM. Here, we construct an emission inventory of CPM in China with a focus on organic aerosols (OAs) based on collected CPM emission information. Results show that OA emissions are enhanced twofold after the inclusion of CPM in a new inventory for China for the years 2014 and 2017. Considering organic CPM emissions and model representations of secondary OA (SOA) formation from CPM, a series of sensitivity cases have been simulated here using the three-dimensional Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model to estimate the contributions of CPM emissions to atmospheric OA and fine PM (PM2.5, particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter not exceeding 2.5 µm) concentrations in China. Compared with observations at a Beijing site during a haze episode from 14 October to 14 November 2014, estimates of the temporal average primary OA (POA) and SOA concentrations were greatly improved after including the CPM effects. These scenarios demonstrated the significant contributions of CPM emissions from stationary combustion and mobile sources to the POA (51 %–85 %), SOA (42 %–58 %), and total OA concentrations (45 %–75 %). Furthermore, the contributions of CPM emissions to total OA concentrations were demonstrated over the 2 major cities and 26 other cities of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region (hereafter referred to as the “BTH2 + 26 cities”) in December 2018, with average contributions of up to 49 %, 53 %, 54 %, and 50 % for Handan, Shijiazhuang, Xingtai, and Dezhou, respectively. Correspondingly, the inclusion of CPM emissions also narrowed the gap between simulated and observed PM2.5 concentrations over the BTH2 + 26 cities. These results improve the simulation performance of atmospheric OA and PM2.5 and may also provide important implications for the sources of OA.

Abstract:The contribution of meteorology and emissions to long-term PM2.5 trends is critical for air quality management but has not yet been fully analyzed. Here, we used the combination of a machine learning model, statistical method, and chemical transport model to quantify the meteorological impacts on PM2.5 pollution during 2000-2018. Specifically, we first developed a two-stage machine learning PM2.5 prediction model with a synthetic minority oversampling technique to improve the satellite-based PM2.5 estimates over highly polluted days, thus allowing us to better characterize the meteorological effects on haze events. Then we used two methods to examine the meteorological contribution to PM2.5: a generalized additive model (GAM) driven by the satellite-based full-coverage daily PM2.5 retrievals and the Weather Research and Forecasting/Community Multiscale Air Quality (WRF/CMAQ) modeling system. We found good agreements between GAM estimations and the CMAQ model estimations of the meteorological contribution to PM2.5 on a monthly scale (correlation coefficient between 0.53-0.72). Both methods revealed the dominant role of emission changes in the long-term trend of PM2.5 concentration in China during 2000-2018, with notable influence from the meteorological condition. The interannual variabilities in meteorology-associated PM2.5 were dominated by the fall and winter meteorological conditions, when regional stagnant and stable conditions were more likely to happen and when haze events frequently occurred. From 2000 to 2018, the meteorological contribution became more unfavorable to PM2.5 pollution across the North China Plain and central China but were more beneficial to pollution control across the southern part, e.g., the Yangtze River Delta. The meteorology-adjusted PM2.5 over eastern China (denoted East China in figures) peaked in 2006 and 2011, mainly driven by the emission peaks in primary PM2.5 and gas precursors in these years. Although emissions dominated the long-term PM(2.5 )trends, the meteorology-driven anomalies also contributed -3.9 % to 2.8 % of the annual mean PM2.5 concentrations in eastern China estimated from the GAM. The meteorological contributions were even higher regionally, e.g., -6.3 % to 4.9 % of the annual mean PM2.5 concentrations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, -5.1 % to 4.3 % in the Fenwei Plain, -4.8 % to 4.3 % in the Yangtze River Delta, and -25.6 % to 12.3 % in the Pearl River Delta. Considering the remarkable meteorological effects on PM2.5 and the possible worsening trend of meteorological conditions in the northern part of China where air pollution is severe and population is clustered, stricter clean air actions are needed to avoid haze events in the future.

Abstract:Fine particulate matter, with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), is a severe problem in China. The lack of ground-based measurements and its sparse distribution obstruct long-term air pollution impact studies over China. Therefore, the present study used newly updated Global Estimates (V5. GL.02) of monthly PM2.5 data from 2001 to 2020 based on Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) by Washington University. The GWR PM2.5 data were validated against ground-based measurements from 2014 to 2020, and the validation results demonstrated a good agreement between GWR and ground-based PM2.5 with a higher correlation (r = 0.95), lower error (8.14), and lower bias (-3.10 %). The long-term (2001-2020) PM2.5 data were used to identify pollution hotspots and sources across China using the potential source contribution function (PSCF). The results showed highly significant PM2.5 pollution hotspots in central (Henan, Hubei), North China Plain (NCP), northwest (Taklimakan), and Sichuan Basin (Chongqing, Sichuan) in China, with the most severe pollution occurring in winter compared to other seasons. During the winter, PM2.5 was in the range from 6.08 to 93.05 μg/m3 in 33 provinces, which is 1.22 to 18.61 times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) Air Quality Guidelines (AQG-2021; annual mean: 5 μg/m3). In 26 provinces, the reported PM2.5 was 1.07 to 2.66 times higher than the Chinese Ambient Air Quality Standard (AAQS; annual mean: 35 μg/m3). Furthermore, provincial-level trend analysis shows that in most Chinese provinces, PM2.5 increased significantly (3-43 %) from 2001 to 2012, whereas it decreased by 12-94 % from 2013 to 2020 due to the implementation of air pollution control policies. Finally, the PSCF analysis demonstrates that China's air quality is mainly affected by local PM2.5 sources rather than by pollutants imported from outside China.

Abstract:Emissions and meteorology are significant factors affecting aerosol pollution, but it is not sufficient to understand their relative contributions to aerosol pollution changes. In this study, the observational data and the chemical model (GRAPES_CUACE) are combined to estimate the drivers of PM2.5 changes in various regions (the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH), the Central China (CC), the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and the Pearl River Delta (PRD)) between the first month after COVID-19 (FMC_2020) (i.e., from 23 January to 23 February 2020) and the corresponding period in 2019 (FMC_2019). The results show that PM2.5 mass concentration increased by 26% (from 61 to 77 μg m−3) in the BTH, while it decreased by 26% (from 94 to 70 μg m−3) in the CC, 29% (from 52 to 37 μg m−3) in the YRD, and 32% (from 34 to 23 μg m−3) in the PRD in FMC_2020 comparing with FMC_2019, respectively. In the BTH, although emissions reductions partly improved PM2.5 pollution (−5%, i.e., PM2.5 mass concentration decreased by 5% due to emissions) in FMC_2020 compared with that of FMC_2019, the total increase in PM2.5 mass concentration was dominated by more unfavorable meteorological conditions (+31%, i.e., PM2.5 mass concentration increased by 31% due to meteorology). In the CC and the YRD, emissions reductions (−33 and −36%) played a dominating role in the total decrease in PM2.5 in FMC_2020, while the changed meteorological conditions partly worsened PM2.5 pollution (+7 and +7%). In the PRD, emissions reductions (−23%) and more favorable meteorological conditions (−9%) led to a total decrease in PM2.5 mass concentration. This study reminds us that the uncertainties of relative contributions of meteorological conditions and emissions on PM2.5 changes in various regions are large, which is conducive to policymaking scientifically in China.
