Abstract:Thermal runaway risk of high specific energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) under mechanical loading has become a big public concern in the past few years. A LIB that is locally large-deformed tends to develop catastrophic structural fracture and internal short circuit (ISC), much easily leading to generation of fire or explosion. Fracture of separator is believed the direct cause of ISC in LIBs subjected to mechanical deformation. However, contribution from the other components to the determinative structural failure and ISC of LIBs are less investigated. This research focuses on how the variation of component properties affects indentation response and the final failure of the jellyroll structure in LIBs. A two-dimensional finite element (FE) model was built for simulating the indentation scenarios of jellyroll and carrying out a parametric study. Simulation data were generated with hundreds of cases considering randomly sampled component properties, and used to develop a surrogate model for quick prediction of jellyroll indentation response. Sensitivity analysis was conducted with the surrogate model to identify the dominated component properties that significantly impact the jellyroll response, and to understand the interplay between the multiple factors that potentially alters the moments of the final failure.
