Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) co-doped by mixed lanthanide ions is a preeminent candidate for ratiometric luminescence thermometers. In recent years, there are few studies on the synthesis of such MOFs by introducing Ln(3+) ions of no luminescent properties such as Y3+. Herein, a novel Y/Eu co-doped Ln-MOF (Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA, H(4)NDPA = 5,5 '-naphthalene-1,4-diyl-diisophthalic acid) was synthesized via solvothermal methods, which showed good phase purity and thermal stability. Compared with EuNDPA, the Y3+ ions in Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA dilute the molar concentration of Eu3+, causing the emerge of ligand emission band. The luminescence intensity ratio of organic ligands and Eu3+ owns a good exponential dependence on temperature variation. As investigated, Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA owns the merits including a wide temperature sensing range (303-423 K), high relative sensitivity (3.04 %K-1 at 423 K), good spectral repeatability (>92 %) and distinct emission color change from red to blue. This novel Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA ratiometric thermometer is expected to promote the application and development of dual-emission MOF materials in the field of microelectronic temperature measurement.

Abstract:In order to expand the application range of luminescent dye, metal-organic framework (MOF) is applied as a carrier to solve the problem such as low luminescent efficiency and poor stability. Here a two-photon luminescent dye-confined ionic metal-organic framework (iMOF) ZJU-68 superset of DMASM was prepared through size confinement and electrostatic interaction. The dye loading content was investigated to obtain maximum luminescent efficiency and it was found that the change of two-photon emission intensity was consistent with that of quantum efficiency. In addition, the composite showed excellent physiological temperature sensing performance from 20 degrees C to 60 degrees C with a high relative sensitivity, good water stability and good biocompatibility, possessing great potential to be applied in biological field.

Abstract:A strategy to achieve a ratiometric thermometer by encapsulating luminescent perylene dye into the pores of a europium metal-organic framework (MOF) is developed. The resulting MOF superset of dye thermometer exhibits highly temperature-dependent luminescence intensity ratio over the physiological temperature range, with a maximum sensitivity of 1.28% degrees C-1 at 20 degrees C.

Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

The targeted self-referencing luminescent thermometer Eu(0.0069)Tb(0.9931)-DMBDC (DMBDC = 2, 5-dimethoxy-1, 4-benzenedicarboxylate) based on two emissions of Tb(3+) at 545 nm and Eu(3+) at 613 nm is not only more robust, reliable, and instantaneous but also has higher sensitivity than the parent MOF Tb-DMBDC based on one emission at a wide range from 10 to 300 K.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold great promise for developing various types of luminescent sensors due to their remarkable structural diversity and tunable luminescence properties. In the last few years, utilizing luminescent MOFs to explore temperature sensing has gained intense attention. In this feature article, after the general description of luminescence thermometry, we have summarized the recent progress made in luminescent MOF thermometers, with particular emphasis on the dual-emitting MOFs that effectively illustrate the self-referencing temperature measurement based on the intensity ratios of two separate transitions.

Abstract:Molecule-based crystalline materials with angle-dependent polarized emission have attracted considerable attention owing to their extensive applications in displays and anticounterfeiting. Herein, one anionic metal–organic framework (MOF) {[Zn2.5(μ3-OH)(NDC)2(HNDC)](HPIM)}n was constructed on the basis of an excellent photoactive ligand naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H2NDC). The protonated 2-propylimidazole (HPIM) guests residing in the nanochannels of MOF can be exchanged by a D-π-A cationic dye. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a promising scaffold for functional guests, are known for the adjustable structures and various porosity, which can improve the luminescence performance by encapsulating fluorophores. Herein, the organic fluorescent dyes of rhodamine B (RhB) and fluorescein (FL) are immobilized in luminescent IRMOF-3, named as Dye@IRMOF-3, by a simple in-suit encapsulation reaction. Dye@IRMOF-3 are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), gas adsorption analysis, thermogravimetric (TG), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and luminescent experiments. Dye@IRMOF-3 composites overcome the intrinsic problem of dye quenching caused by aggregation in solids, and show the fluorescence of both IRMOF-3 and dye molecules. In luminescence temperature sensing experiments, the relative sensitivity range of RhB@IRMOF-3 and FL@IRMOF-3 are from 0.60 to 0.87%°C−1 (temperature range of 20–70 °C) and 0.47–0.66%°C−1 (temperature range of 20–80 °C), respectively, making them promising colorimetric thermometer for field temperature measurements. Meantime, the emission spectrum of RhB/FL@IRMOF-3 can cover the whole visible light, whose CIE coordinates (0.330,0.342) are quite close to those of the pure white light (0.333,0.333), showing potential applications in the field of white light emission. This work provides a promising method for the synthesis of Dye@MOF luminescent materials and provides a new way to develop temperature-sensitive and white-emitting MOF materials by encapsulating different dye molecules.

Abstract:A terbium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) TbTATAB (H3TATAB = 4,4',4''-s-triazine-1,3,5-triyltri-p-aminobenzoic acid) with a 1D channel has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Then, the luminescent dye 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin (C460) was encapsulated into the channel of TbTATAB by an exchange strategy to yield the dual-emitting MOF⊃dye composite TbTATAB⊃C460. Luminescence explorations demonstrated that the composite can be applied as a ratiometric thermometer over a wide temperature range from 100 to 300 K. The unique energy transfer between C460 molecules and Tb3+ enables the TbTATAB⊃C460 thermometer to be highly temperature-sensitive with a maximum relative sensitivity of 4.484% K-1 at 300 K. The composite luminescent thermometer is self-calibrated, colorimetric, reusable and much more thermosensitive than most of the other explored sensors.

Abstract:Luminescent nanothermometers working with high resolution and multiple optical signals are a powerful tool for complex analysis with high accuracy and selectivity. Herein, we describe a novel strategy, for the first time, by encapsulating two types of luminescent dyes (4-Mu and Flu) into the pores of a nanoscale metal-organic framework (MOF) ZIF-8 for multimode temperature sensing. When the temperature rises, the maximum emission wavelength (lambda(max)) of dye 4-MU in ZIF-8 superset of 4-MU&Flu redshifts, and the emission ratio (I-Flu/I4-MU) of Flu and 4-MU in ZIF-8 superset of 4-MU&Flu shows good linear response to temperature, which indicate the high sensitivity of the nanothermometer with multimode temperature readout (S-m = 0.62% K-1 at 240 degrees C). Remarkably, the uniform nanoscale size distribution and good thermal stability of the nanosized MOF.dyes composites enable it to perform multimode temperature sensing with high spatial resolution, which is demonstrated by the temperature mapping. Therefore, this material shows a more-reliable temperature indication by utilizing the multiparameter readout and an excellent temperature distribution with high spatial resolution.

Abstract:Thermal sensing and imaging in the physiological temperature range are of great importance for studying physiological processes and treating diseases. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit great promise for developing luminescent thermometers due to their remarkable structural diversities and tunable luminescence properties. Here, we synthesized a series of luminescent mixed-lanthanide MOFs, Eu(x)Tbi(1-x),BPT (x = 0.019, 0.058, 0.106; H3BPT = biphenyl-3,4',5-tricarboxylate acid) and adopted powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) to characterize the resulting products. The temperature-dependent photoluminescence emission spectra were recorded to investigate their potential applications in physiological temperature readout. It is found that the intensity ratio of Tb3+ to Eu3+ is linearly correlated with temperature and the relative sensitivity is higher than 1.5%/degrees C over the entire physiological temperature range. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent luminescence color emission allows for visual colorimetric temperature measurements. Abstract:Luminescent temperature sensing in biological windows is uniquely superior compared to traditional temperature sensing methods because the scattering and absorption by skin, tissue and blood is minimal. In this study, the two-photon luminescence from dyes loaded into a metal-organic framework was utilised to achieve physiological temperature sensing within two biological windows. A composite was prepared that can be excited at 1064 nm to emit at 650 nm, well within the two biological windows. The two-photon luminescence intensity at 650 nm has a linear relationship with temperature over the range 20 to 60 degrees C. In addition, the stability and quantum efficiency were significantly improved after loading into the MOF and, with high temperature resolution, excellent repeatability and low biological toxicity, measurements with this composite has great potential to be applied to physiological temperature sensing in cells or tissues.
Embedding Red Emitters in the NbO-Type Metal–Organic Frameworks for Highly Sensitive Luminescence Thermometry over Tunable Temperature Range

Abstract:The intrinsic advantages of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), including extraordinarily high porosities, tailorable architectures, and diverse functional sites, make the MOFs platforms for multifunctional materials. In this study, we synthesized two kinds of isostructural NbO-type Zn2+-based MOFs, where two structurally similar tetracarboxylate ligands, 5,5′-(pyrazine-2,5-diyl)diisophthalic acid (H4PZDDI) and 5,5′-(pyridine-2,5-diyl)diisophthalic acid (H4PDDI), with pyridine or pyrazine moieties, were employed as the organic linkers. By embedding the red-emitting cationic units of pyridinium hemicyanine dye 4-[p-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium (DSM) and trivalent europium ion (Eu3+), two types of composites, and and Eu3+@ZnPZDDI and Eu3+@ZJU-56, were harvested and evaluated for use as potential ratiometric temperature probes. The temperature-responsive luminescence of these dual-emitting composites was investigated, and their representative features of relative sensitivity, temperature resolution, spectral repeatability, and luminescence color change were discussed. Importantly, compared with the DSM-incorporated composites, Eu3+@ZnPZDDI and Eu3+@ZJU-56 show a much wider sensing temperature range and higher relative sensitivities, suggesting the performance of the composites can be engineered by elaborately combining the host and guest units. Abstract:A novel fluorescent probe (C460@Tb-MOFs) was designed and synthesized by encapsulating the fluorescent dye 7-diethylamino-4-methyl coumarin (C460) into a terbium-based metal–organic framework using a simple ultrasonic impregnation method. It is impressive that this dye-modified metal–organic framework can specifically detect styrene and temperature upon luminescence quenching. The sensing platform of this material exhibits great selectivity, fast response, and good cyclability toward styrene detection. It is worth mentioning that the sensing process undergoes a distinct color change from blue to colorless, providing conditions for the accurate visual detection of styrene liquid and gas. The significant fluorescence quenching mechanism of styrene toward C460@Tb-MOFs is explored in detail. Moreover, the dye-modified metal–organic framework can also achieve temperature sensing from 298 to 498 K with high relative sensitivity at 498 K. The preparation of functionalized MOF composites with fluorescent dyes provides an effective strategy for the construction of sensors for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:A strategy by encapsulating organic dyes into the pores of a luminescent metal‐organic framework (MOF) is developed to achieve white‐light‐emitting phosphor. Both the red‐light emitting dye 4‐(p‐dimethylaminostyryl)‐1‐methylpyridinium (DSM) and the green‐light emitting dye acriflavine (AF) are encapsulated into a blue‐emitting anionic MOF ZJU‐28 through an ion‐exchange process to yield the MOF⊃dye composite ZJU‐28⊃DSM/AF. The emission color of the obtained composite can be easily modulated by simply adjusting the amount and component of dyes. With careful adjustment of the relative concentration of the dyes DSM and AF, the resulting ZJU‐28⊃DSM/AF (0.02 wt% DSM, 0.06 wt% AF) exhibits a broadband white emission with ideal CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.32), high color‐rendering index value of 91, and moderate correlated color temperature value of 5327 K. Such a strategy can be easily expanded to other luminescent MOFs and dyes, thus opening a new perspective for the development of white light emitting materials.
