Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) co-doped by mixed lanthanide ions is a preeminent candidate for ratiometric luminescence thermometers. In recent years, there are few studies on the synthesis of such MOFs by introducing Ln(3+) ions of no luminescent properties such as Y3+. Herein, a novel Y/Eu co-doped Ln-MOF (Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA, H(4)NDPA = 5,5 '-naphthalene-1,4-diyl-diisophthalic acid) was synthesized via solvothermal methods, which showed good phase purity and thermal stability. Compared with EuNDPA, the Y3+ ions in Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA dilute the molar concentration of Eu3+, causing the emerge of ligand emission band. The luminescence intensity ratio of organic ligands and Eu3+ owns a good exponential dependence on temperature variation. As investigated, Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA owns the merits including a wide temperature sensing range (303-423 K), high relative sensitivity (3.04 %K-1 at 423 K), good spectral repeatability (>92 %) and distinct emission color change from red to blue. This novel Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA ratiometric thermometer is expected to promote the application and development of dual-emission MOF materials in the field of microelectronic temperature measurement.

Abstract:Mixed-lanthanide (Ln) luminescent materials have important application values in ratiometric temperature sensing. Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) offer a self-supporting network to conveniently tune multiple Ln3+ ions, but challenges still exist in material design. In this work, we selected two simple organic molecules as hydrogen-bonded building blocks, which are melamine (MA) and 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) owning the suitable energy to sensitize Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions. MA assists PDC molecules to support the network in a new HOF (MA-PDC), where the abundant carboxylic groups enable Ln3+ ions to combine with the HOF. Based on the effective energy transfer process, the emission of Tb3+ and Eu3+ from TbxEu1–x@MA-PDC (x = 0.75, 0.85, 0.90) shows the obvious temperature dependence, which benefits ratiometric temperature detection. Taking Tb0.85Eu0.15@MA-PDC as an example, when temperature varies from 303 to 443 K, the intensity ratio exhibits distinct S-type response based on Mott-Seitz model. It also behaves good relative sensitivity (1.03%/K at 383 K), low temperature resolution (0.059 K) and large reproducibility (>96%). This work demonstrates that functionalization of a simple-component HOF with mixed Ln3+ ions is a fantastic strategy to develop novel ratiometric thermometers of both low cost and good performance.

Abstract:The non-contact thermometry based on fluorescence intensity ratio of phosphors has been extensively investigated owing to its high sensitivity and fast response. However, most of them only use a single mode of upconversion or downconversion emission for temperature sensing and ignore the affection of the humidity. In this work, the Yb/Er ions doped La2Mo3O12 microcrystals with nonhygroscopic property and multimode luminescence have been developed for temperature sensing. The optical thermometer could be based on not only luminescent intensity ratio of upconversion and downconversion, but also average fluorescence decay lifetime. The maximal absolute sensitivity can reach up to 6.2% K-1 and the maximal relative sensitivity is 1.63% K-1. Moreover, the fluorescence emission intensity of the doped La2Mo3O12 microcrystals will not be affected by the humidity compared to some doped molybdate and tungstate. These excellent performances suggest that the La2Mo3O12:Yb/Er microcrystals possess great potential for practical applications in temperature sensing. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A strategy to achieve a ratiometric thermometer by encapsulating luminescent perylene dye into the pores of a europium metal-organic framework (MOF) is developed. The resulting MOF superset of dye thermometer exhibits highly temperature-dependent luminescence intensity ratio over the physiological temperature range, with a maximum sensitivity of 1.28% degrees C-1 at 20 degrees C.

Such an obvious FIR -temperature change through the NTCLs presents an outstanding optical thermometric performance, yielding the high temperature sensing with wide range. The maximum value of absolute sensitivity was 2 orders of magnitude higher than the temperature measurement using TCLs. More importantly, the sesquioxide Yb,Er,Tm:LuScO 3 SCFs exhibit superior thermal stability that will be helpful to obtain high precision temperature measurement. Hence, our findings might offer some useful inspiration for exploring high -sensitivity luminescent thermometers and enriching the research of temperature measuring materials.

Three-energy-level-cascaded Strategy for a More Sensitive Luminescence Ratiometric Thermometry

Abstract:Luminescence ratiometric thermometry has gained increasing attention in recent years because of its several merits, such as non-invasive operating mode, fast response time, excellent spatial resolution, and so forth. It can be realized by using the thermally coupled energy levels (TCELs) of rare earth ions. The maximum thermal sensitivity for the TCELs-based luminescence ratiometric thermometry has been found to be similar to 2000/kT(2). Here we show that using a three-energy-level-cascaded strategy can surpass this maximum value. In scheelite host material, the (4)G(11/2)-H-6(15/2) transition of Dy3+ ion was observed successfully upon UV excitation. Moreover, the Dy3+ ion's (4)G(11/2)/I-4(15/2)/F-4(9/2) excited states were confirmed to be thermally linked with each other by studying on the photoluminescence of the as-prepared Dy3+-embedded phosphors at different temperatures. By utilizing the (4)G(11/2)/F-4(9/2) states, rather than the commonly investigated I-4(15/2)/(4)F(9/2)( )ones in the previous literatures, the relative sensitivity was found to as high as 2414/kT(2) over the experimental temperature range. It surpasses the theoretical maximum value 2000/kT(2). In the end, we study the relationship between the relative sensitivity and temperature resolution, and find that a higher relative sensitivity cannot always ensure a better temperature resolution. In order to achieve a better temperature resolution in practice, both the relative sensitivity and the relative uncertainty of the luminescence intensity ratio that is used for indicating temperature should be considered simultaneously. Abstract:A near infrared luminescent MOFs thermometer (Nd0.676Yb0.324BTC) was prepared via a simple solvothermal method using Ln3+ (Ln=Nd, Yb) ions and 1, 3, 5-benznenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC), and characterized by PXRD, TGA, ICP, and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. These results indicate that the Nd0.676Yb0.324BTC displays high relative sensitivity and excellent repeatability in the physiological temperature range (288–323K), and the maximum relative sensitivity is determined to be 1.187% K−1 at 323K. These NIR luminescent MOFs may have potential applications in physiological temperature sensing.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold great promise for developing various types of luminescent sensors due to their remarkable structural diversity and tunable luminescence properties. In the last few years, utilizing luminescent MOFs to explore temperature sensing has gained intense attention. In this feature article, after the general description of luminescence thermometry, we have summarized the recent progress made in luminescent MOF thermometers, with particular emphasis on the dual-emitting MOFs that effectively illustrate the self-referencing temperature measurement based on the intensity ratios of two separate transitions.
A Robust Mixed-Lanthanide Polymof Membrane For Ratiometric Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Temperature sensors play a significant role in biology, chemistry, and engineering, especially those that can work accurately in a noninvasive manner. We adopted a photoinduced post-synthetic copolymerization strategy to realize a membranous ratiometric luminescent thermometer based on the emissions of two lanthanide ions. This novel mixed-lanthanide polyMOF membrane exhibits not only the integrity and temperature sensing behaviour of the Ln-MOF powder but also excellent mechanical properties, such as flexibility, elasticity, and processability. Moreover, the polyMOF membrane shows remarkable stability under harsh conditions, including high humidity, strong acid and alkali (pH 0-14), which allowed the mapping of temperature distributions in extreme circumstances. This work highlights a simple strategy for polyMOF membrane formation and pushes forward the further practical application of Ln-MOF-based luminescent thermometers in various fields and conditions.
Luminescent composites by in-suit encapsulating dye in IRMOF-3 for ratiometric temperature sensing and tunable white light emission

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a promising scaffold for functional guests, are known for the adjustable structures and various porosity, which can improve the luminescence performance by encapsulating fluorophores. Herein, the organic fluorescent dyes of rhodamine B (RhB) and fluorescein (FL) are immobilized in luminescent IRMOF-3, named as Dye@IRMOF-3, by a simple in-suit encapsulation reaction. Dye@IRMOF-3 are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), gas adsorption analysis, thermogravimetric (TG), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and luminescent experiments. Dye@IRMOF-3 composites overcome the intrinsic problem of dye quenching caused by aggregation in solids, and show the fluorescence of both IRMOF-3 and dye molecules. In luminescence temperature sensing experiments, the relative sensitivity range of RhB@IRMOF-3 and FL@IRMOF-3 are from 0.60 to 0.87%°C−1 (temperature range of 20–70 °C) and 0.47–0.66%°C−1 (temperature range of 20–80 °C), respectively, making them promising colorimetric thermometer for field temperature measurements. Meantime, the emission spectrum of RhB/FL@IRMOF-3 can cover the whole visible light, whose CIE coordinates (0.330,0.342) are quite close to those of the pure white light (0.333,0.333), showing potential applications in the field of white light emission. This work provides a promising method for the synthesis of Dye@MOF luminescent materials and provides a new way to develop temperature-sensitive and white-emitting MOF materials by encapsulating different dye molecules.

Rational construction of luminescent Eu-doped Y-MOF for ratiometric temperature sensing

Abstract:Introducing lanthanide(iii) ions into a MOF structure is one of the most effective strategies to construct luminescent MOFs with multiple emission centers for fluorescent applications. In this work, a functionalized Eu3+-doped Y-MOF (Eu@SNNU-325) was constructed by using a cation exchange strategy. The photoluminescence result shows that Eu@SNNU-325 exhibits a unique emission spectrum, namely, the absence of the organic ligand peak and the very strong Y3+/Eu3+ characteristic peaks. Interestingly, the smart luminescent Eu@SNNU-325 as a ratiometric thermometer for temperature sensing has good self-calibrated ability and a high maximum relative sensitivity (S m) value (1.2% K-1 at 260 K). This work presents the construction of a smart Eu3+-functionalized Y-MOF thermometer through a cation exchange strategy, providing a good idea for the future development and design of Y-MOF thermometers.

Abstract:Lanthanides doped optical materials with temperature sensing property are of great interest for optical thermometry. However, most lanthanides doped luminescent materials for ratiometric thermometer are often accompanied by thermal quenching, which leads to a decrease in temperature sensing performance. Here, Nd3+ doped Yb2Mo3O12 phosphor with near-infrared upconversion emissions has been fabricated. A non-contact thermometer is constructed with the luminescence of Nd3+ ions and the change of the emission peak height ratio of 4F7/2-4I9/2 and 4F5/2-4I9/2 transitions. Interestingly, the intensity of the emission peaks in the prepared phosphor increases with increasing temperature. Avoiding thermal quenching, the thermally enhanced upconversion emission affords high sensing accuracy. The maximum relative and absolute sensitivity was 1.186% and 9.789 × 10−3 K−1, respectively. The results suggest that appropriate emission bands with thermal population are benefit for optical ratiometric thermometers.

Abstract:The accurate measurement of temperature is of great importance in many fields ranging from industrial manufacture to our daily life, which can be finely implemented via the fluorescent intensity ratio (FIR) thermometry on the basis of Boltzmann distribution. Especially, the near-infrared (NIR)-emitting levels 4T2/2E of Cr3+ ion have recently emerged as the promising thermally coupled levels (TCLs), taking advantage of their superior optical property with high tunability. Herein, the crystal field strength around Cr3+ ions in double-perovskite La2MgHfO6 have been elaborately modulated via varying the dopant concentration, which greatly affect the intensity ratio between the spin-forbidden 2E → 4A2 and spin-allowed 4T2 → 4A2 transitions. Thermal sensing behaviors based on the TCLs (4T2/2E) were evaluated and the relative sensitivity gradually grew with the increase of crystal field strength. Above results offer guiding insights into the sensitivity optimization of Cr3+-based FIR thermometers, while providing the possibility of highly accurate measurement of temperature.

Abstract:A luminescent mixed lanthanide metal-organic framework approach has been realized to explore luminescent thermometers. The targeted self-referencing luminescent thermometer Eu(0.0069)Tb(0.9931)-DMBDC (DMBDC = 2, 5-dimethoxy-1, 4-benzenedicarboxylate) based on two emissions of Tb(3+) at 545 nm and Eu(3+) at 613 nm is not only more robust, reliable, and instantaneous but also has higher sensitivity than the parent MOF Tb-DMBDC based on one emission at a wide range from 10 to 300 K.

Abstract:Thermal sensing and imaging in the physiological temperature range are of great importance for studying physiological processes and treating diseases. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit great promise for developing luminescent thermometers due to their remarkable structural diversities and tunable luminescence properties. Here, we synthesized a series of luminescent mixed-lanthanide MOFs, Eu(x)Tbi(1-x),BPT (x = 0.019, 0.058, 0.106; H3BPT = biphenyl-3,4',5-tricarboxylate acid) and adopted powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) to characterize the resulting products. The temperature-dependent photoluminescence emission spectra were recorded to investigate their potential applications in physiological temperature readout. It is found that the intensity ratio of Tb3+ to Eu3+ is linearly correlated with temperature and the relative sensitivity is higher than 1.5%/degrees C over the entire physiological temperature range. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent luminescence color emission allows for visual colorimetric temperature measurements. Abstract:Recently, luminescence ratiometric thermometry has gained ever-increasing attention due to its merits of rapid response, non-invasiveness, high spatial resolution, and so forth. For research fields relying on temperature measurements, achieving a higher relative sensitivity of this measurement is still an important task. In this work, we developed a strategy for achieving a more sensitive temperature measurement, one merely depending on the photoluminescence of Eu3+. We showed that using the 5D1-7F1 transition and the hypersensitive 5D0-7F2 transition of Eu3+ can boost the relative sensitivity compared with the method relying on the 5D1-7F1 and 5D0-7F1 transitions of Eu3+. The difference between these two strategies was studied and was explained by the hypersensitive 5D0-7F2 transition more steeply decreasing than the 5D0-7F1 transition with a rise in temperature. Our work is expected to help researchers design sensitive optical thermometers via proper use of this hypersensitive transition.

Abstract:Temperature measurements and thermal mapping using luminescent MOF operating in the high-temperature range are of great interest in the micro-electronic diagnosis. In this paper, we report a thermostable Eu/Tb-mixed MOF Eu0.37Tb0.63-BTC-a exhibiting strong luminescence at elevated temperature, which can serve as a ratiometric luminescent thermometer for high-temperature range. The high-temperature operating range (313–473K), high relative sensitivity and accurate temperature resolution, make such a Eu/Tb-mixed MOF useful for micro-electronic diagnosis.

Abstract:Achieving ratiometric thermometry with a single organic luminophore is a tempting but challenging task. Herein, three dihydrophenazine‐based ratiometric thermometers, namely DPC, DPSi‐1, and DPSi‐2, are facilely developed via the novel vibration‐induced emission (VIE) strategy. By elaborately introducing alkyl/siloxane chains to the dihydrophenazine core, these fluorophores exhibit as powder with low melting point or nonvolatile liquids, which emit temperature‐sensitive dual emissions: predominantly blue fluorescence (FL) at low temperature and chiefly orange‐red FL at high temperature. According to the VIE mechanism, high temperature activates the intramolecular motions, thus facilitates the excited‐state configuration transformation of the phenazine moiety from bent to planar, as confirmed by the molecular dynamics calculation. The invisible temperature information over a broad range from 5 to 135 °C can be vividly revealed by these VIE‐based ratiometric thermometers, with a high sensitivity (3.40% per °C), a wide linear response region (50–135 °C) and good reversibility, in a solvent‐free and naked‐eye observable manner. Very importantly, these thermometers can be coated onto any object surface for simple and fast large‐area temperature detection, demonstrating their superior practicability compared with other luminescent thermometers. The ratiometric thermometry scheme proposed here may offer new insights into developing thermometers for various applications.

Abstract:Luminescence thermometry technique, which utilizes the rare earth ions activated luminescent nanomaterials as sensing media, has presented great potential in various fields owing to its high spatial, temporal, and thermal resolutions. Nevertheless, the development of sensitive luminescent nanothermometers working in the biological window remains a challenge. Here, Tm3+-Yb3+ codoped NaYF4 nanocrystals, the excitation and emission wavelengths of which are both located within the near-infrared region, are investigated for optical temperature measurement via the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) approach. The thermal population and decay rates involved in the thermally coupled levels (3F2, 3 and 3H4) are verified to play an important role in regulating the thermal coupling status. The measurement sensitivity of as-prepared nanothermometers is optimized through modulating the Tm3+ surrounding environment and a maximum sensitivity of about 2.13% K−1 is achieved in the physiological temperature range. Besides, a parameter named as thermally coupled degree is defined in this work to quantify the coupling between the thermally coupled levels. According to the conclusion of our work, special attention has to be taken for rationally constructing FIR-based optical temperature sensors.
