Abstract:We review a sample of the experimental results from AGS to SPS and RHIC and their interpretations towards understanding of the Quark-Gluon Plasma. In the final section I present some thoughts about what should be done next, both in the experiemntal and the theoretical arena.

Abstract:Important experimental results from CERN heavy ion collisions and their physical interpretation are reviewed.A hot and dense system is formed in the early stages of the collisions,and the energy density reaches the threshold to create quark-gluon plasma(QGP).The experimental phenomena like low-mass dilepton enhancement,J/Ψ suppression and strangeness enhancement can be explained through the formation of QGP.However,the current data are still not enough to prove the existence of QGP.

Abstract:The results from data taken during the last several years at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) will be reviewed in the paper. Several selected topics that further our understanding of constituent quark scaling, jet quenching and color screening effect of heavy quarkonia in the hot dense medium will be presented. Detector upgrades will further probe the properties of Quark Gluon Plasma. Future measurements with upgraded detectors will be presented. Abstract:Quark flavour physics is the study of hadrons, their properties, and their decays into other particles. As a discipline it simultaneously catalogues the nature of physical states within the Standard Model of particle physics, and in doing so tests the consistency and completeness of the Standard Model's description of reality. Following the discovery of the Higgs field, it is more essential than ever to critically examine the Standard Model's own coherence. Precision studies of quark flavour are one of the most sensitive experimental instruments for this task. I give a brief and necessarily selective overview of recent developments in quark flavour physics and discuss prospects for the next generation of experiments and facilities, with an emphasis on the energy scales of beyond Standard Model physics probed by these types of measurements.

A dynamical quasiparticle approach for the QGP bulk and transport properties

Abstract:The properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) nowadays are accessible by lattice QCD calculations at vanishing quark chemical potential [Formula: see text], but often lack a transparent physical interpretation. In this review, we report about results from an extended dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM[Formula: see text]) in which the effective parton propagators have a complex self-energy that depends on the temperature [Formula: see text] of the medium as well as on the chemical potential [Formula: see text] and the parton three-momentum [Formula: see text] with respect to the medium at rest. It is demonstrated that this approach allows for a good description of QCD thermodynamics with respect to the entropy density, pressure, etc. above the critical temperature [Formula: see text] 158 MeV. Furthermore, the quark susceptibility [Formula: see text] and the quark number density [Formula: see text] are found to be reproduced simultaneously at zero and finite quark chemical potential. The shear and bulk viscosities [Formula: see text], and the electric conductivity [Formula: see text] from the DQPM[Formula: see text] also turn out in close agreement with lattice results for [Formula: see text] =0. The DQPM[Formula: see text], furthermore, allows to evaluate the momentum [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] dependencies of the partonic degrees of freedom also for larger [Formula: see text] which are mandatory for transport studies of heavy-ion collisions in the regime 5[Formula: see text]GeV [Formula: see text] 10[Formula: see text]GeV. We finally calculate the charm quark diffusion coefficient [Formula: see text] – evaluated from the differential cross-sections of partons in the medium for light and heavy quarks by employing the propagators and couplings from the DQPM – and compare it to the available lattice data. It is argued that the complete set of observables allows for a transparent interpretation of the properties of hot QCD.

Chromaticity of Gravitational Microlensing Events

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the color changes of gravitational microlensing events caused by the two different mechanisms of differential amplification for a limb-darkened extended source and blending. From this investigation, we find that the color changes of limb-darkened extended source events (color curves) have dramatically different characteristics depending on whether the lens transits the source star or not. We show that for a source transit event, the lens proper motion can be determined by simply measuring the turning time of the color curve instead of fitting the overall color or light curves. We also find that even for a very small fraction of blended light, the color changes induced by the blending effect is equivalent to those caused by the limb-darkening effect, causing serious distortion in the observed color curve. Therefore, to obtain useful information about the lens and source star from the color curve of a limb-darkened extended source event, it will be essential to eliminate or correct for the blending effect. We discuss about the methods for the efficient correction of the blending effect.

Spin-Dependent Interactions and Heavy-Quark Transport in the QGP

Abstract:We extend a previously constructed T-matrix approach to the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) to include the effects of spin-dependent interactions between partons. Following earlier work within the relativistic quark model, the spin-dependent interactions figure as relativistic corrections to the Cornell potential. When applied to the vacuum spectroscopy of quarkonia, in particular their mass splittings in S- and P-wave states, the issue of the Lorentz structure of the confining potential arises. We confirm that a significant admixture of a vector interaction (to the previously assumed scalar interaction) improves the description of the experimental mass splittings. The temperature corrections to the in-medium potential are constrained by results from thermal lattice-QCD for the equation of state (EoS) and heavy-quark (HQ) free energy in a selfconsistent set-up for heavy- and light-parton spectral functions in the QGP. We then deploy the refined in-medium heavy-light T-matrix to compute the charm-quark transport coefficients in the QGP. The vector component of the confining potential, through its relativistic corrections, enhances the friction coefficient for charm quarks in the QGP over previous calculations by tens of percent at low momenta and temperatures, and more at higher momenta. Our results are promising for improving the current phenomenology of open heavy-flavor observables at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Early time dynamics and constraints on medium evolution

Abstract:In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is created whose pre-equilibrium evolution includes a rich variety of exciting phenomena of Quantum Chromodynamics. In these Proceedings, we provide a short overview of our current understanding of the pre-equilibrium dynamics of the QGP from a weak-coupling perspective and highlight recent developments. Focusing on new studies, we then discuss how initial stages of the QGP medium may impact hard probes including direct photons, dileptons, jets, and heavy quarks. This introduces promising opportunities to obtain experimental signatures of the pre-equilibrium QGP.

Bottomonia in the Quark-Gluon Plasma and their Production at RHIC and LHC

Abstract:We study the production of bottomonium states in heavy-ion reactions at collider energies available at RHIC and LHC. We employ an earlier constructed rate equation approach which accounts for both suppression and regeneration mechanisms in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and hadronization phases of the evolving thermal medium. Our previous predictions utilizing two limiting cases of strong and weak bottomonium binding in the QGP are updated by (i) checking the compatibility of the pertinent spectral functions with lattice-QCD results for euclidean correlators, (ii) adapting the initial conditions of the rate equation by updating bottom-related input cross sections and the charged-particle multiplicity of the fireball, and (iii) converting our calculations into observables as recently measured by the STAR and CMS experiments. Our main findings are a preference for strong $\Upsilon$ binding as well as a significant regeneration component at the LHC.

Abstract:Since we entered the 21st century,our understanding of the state of matter at the most fundamental level has been significantly deepened,mainly due to the successful running of the relativistic heavy-ion collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the U.S.and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.In particular,a new state of matter,the so-called quark-gluon plasma,has been extensively investigated,and many new and important achievements have been made.In this article we shall discuss the following points:1) the strong interaction and phase structure of quantum chromodynamics,2) the various properties of the quark-gluon plasma,and 3) the experimental signals of the quark-gluon plasma in high energy nuclear collisions.

Abstract:We apply classical gluodynamics to early stages of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. We start by going through the space-time evolution of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions in the color glass condensate framework and the basics of real-time gluodynamics on the lattice in the temporal gauge. We study the plasmon mass scale in three- and two-dimensional systems by comparing three different methods to measure the mass scale. The methods are a formula which can be derived from Hard Thermal Loop effective theory at leading order (HTL), the effective dispersion relation (DR) and measurement of the plasma oscillation frequency triggered by the introduction of a uniform electric field (UE) into the system. We observe that in both systems the plasmon mass scale decreases like a power law after an occupation number dependent initial transient time. In both cases the UE and HTL methods are in rough agreement, and in the three-dimensional case the two agree in the continuum limit. As a second way to study the quasiparticle properties, we derive, implement and test an algorithm which can be used to simulate linearized fluctuations on top of the classical background. The algorithm is derived by requiring conservation of Gauss' law and gauge invariance. We then apply the algorithm to spectral properties of overoccupied gluodynamics using linear response theory. We establish the existence of transverse and longitudinal quasiparticles by extracting their spectral functions. We also extract the dispersion relation, effective mass, plasmon mass and damping rate of the quasiparticles. Our results are consistent with the HTL effective theory, but we also observe effects beyond leading order HTL.
