Abstract:Recently, there have been significant progresses for theories of quarkonium production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at colliders. We give a brief review of these theories, with emphasis on the successes and difficulties of nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism, as well as the new proposal of soft gluon factorization.

Abstract:We first review the cold and hot nuclear matter effects on quarkonium production in high energy collisions, then discuss three kinds of models to describe the quarkonium suppression and regeneration: the sequential dissociation, the statistical production and the transport approach, and finally make comparisons between the models and the experimental data from heavy ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies.

Abstract:Recent progress in heavy quarkonium production is reviewed in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD.Possible resolutions of the long standing problems of J/ψ and ψ ′ production cross sec- tions and polarizations at high p T observed at the Tevatron are investigated, and predictions are compared with the new measurements at the LHC.Puzzles in hadroproduction of P-wave charmonium states χ cJ are also discussed.In addition, charmonium production in e + e -annihilation at B factories and in photoproduction at HERA as well as in two-photon collisions are also reviewed.Special emphasis is put on the role of next-to-leading order corrections in NRQCD, which may essentially change the p T distributions at high p T for both yield and polarization in quarkonium hadroproduction.

Theory for Quarkonium: from NRQCD Factorization to Soft Gluon Factorization

Abstract:We demonstrate that the recently proposed soft gluon factorization (SGF) is equivalent to the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization for heavy quarkonium production or decay, which means that, for any given process, these two factorization theories are either both valid or both violated. We use two methods to arrive at this conclusion. In the first method, we apply the two factorization theories to the physical process J/psi -> e(+)e(-). Our explicit calculation shows that both SGF and NRQCD can correctly reproduce the low energy physics of full QCD, and the two factorizations are thus equivalent. In the second method, by using equations of motion, we successfully deduce SGF from NRQCD effective field theory. By identifying SGF with NRQCD factorization, we establish relations between the two factorization theories and prove the generalized Gremm-Kapustin relation as a byproduct. Compared with the NRQCD factorization, the advantage of SGF is that it resums the series of relativistic corrections originating from kinematic effects to all powers, yielding better convergence of the relativistic expansion.

Abstract:We investigate the charmonium and bottomonium production in $pp$ collisions using the Wigner densities formalism. The Wigner density of the quarkonia is approximated by analytical 3-D isotropic harmonic oscillator Wigner densities with the same root-mean-square radius given by the solution of the Schrödinger equation. This approach reproduces quite well the available experimental transverse momentum and rapidity distributions.

Abstract:We study the production of heavy quarkonium states in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. Following earlier work of Blaizot, Fujii, Gelis, and Venugopalan, we systematically include both small x evolution and multiple scattering effects on heavy quark pair production within the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework. We obtain for the first time expressions in the Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism for heavy quarkonium differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity. We observe that the production of color singlet heavy quark pairs is sensitive to both “quadrupole” and “dipole” Wilson line correlators, whose energy evolution is described by the Balitsky-JIMWLK equations. In contrast, the color octet channel is sensitive to dipole correlators alone. In a quasi-classical approximation, our results for the color singlet channel reduce to those of Dominguez et al. [1]. We compare our results to those obtained combining the CGC with the color evaporation model and point to qualitative differences in the two approaches.

Abstract:We report on recent theory progress in understanding the production of heavy quarkonium in heavy-ion collisions based on the in-medium heavy-quark potential extracted from lattice QCD simulations. On the one hand, the proper in-medium potential allows us to study the spectral properties of heavy quarkonium in thermal equilibrium, from which we estimate the $\psi^\prime$ to $J/\psi$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions. On the other hand, the potential provides a central ingredient in the description of the real-time evolution of heavy-quarkonium formulated in the open-quantum-systems framework.

Abstract:A golden age for heavy-quarkonium physics dawned a decade ago, initiated by the confluence of exciting advances in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and an explosion of related experimental activity. The early years of this period were chronicled in the Quarkonium Working Group (QWG) CERN Yellow Report (YR) in 2004, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of the field at that time and provided specific recommendations for further progress. However, the broad spectrum of subsequent breakthroughs, surprises, and continuing puzzles could only be partially anticipated. Since the release of the YR, the BESII program concluded only to give birth to BESIII; the B-factories and CLEO-c flourished; quarkonium production and polarization measurements at HERA and the Tevatron matured; and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC have opened a window on the deconfinement regime. All these experiments leave legacies of quality, precision, and unsolved mysteries for quarkonium physics, and therefore beg for continuing investigations at BESIII, the LHC, RHIC, FAIR, the Super Flavor and/or Tau–Charm factories, JLab, the ILC, and beyond. The list of newly found conventional states expanded to include h c (1P), χ c2(2P), $B_{c}^{+}$ , and η b (1S). In addition, the unexpected and still-fascinating X(3872) has been joined by more than a dozen other charmonium- and bottomonium-like “XYZ” states that appear to lie outside the quark model. Many of these still need experimental confirmation. The plethora of new states unleashed a flood of theoretical investigations into new forms of matter such as quark–gluon hybrids, mesonic molecules, and tetraquarks. Measurements of the spectroscopy, decays, production, and in-medium behavior of $c\bar{c}$ , $b\bar{b}$ , and $b\bar{c}$ bound states have been shown to validate some theoretical approaches to QCD and highlight lack of quantitative success for others. Lattice QCD has grown from a tool with computational possibilities to an industrial-strength effort now dependent more on insight and innovation than pure computational power. New effective field theories for the description of quarkonium in different regimes have been developed and brought to a high degree of sophistication, thus enabling precise and solid theoretical predictions. Many expected decays and transitions have either been measured with precision or for the first time, but the confusing patterns of decays, both above and below open-flavor thresholds, endure and have deepened. The intriguing details of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions that have emerged from RHIC have elevated the importance of separating hot- and cold-nuclear-matter effects in quark–gluon plasma studies. This review systematically addresses all these matters and concludes by prioritizing directions for ongoing and future efforts.

Abstract:The dissociation, or "melting", of heavy quarkonia states due to color charge screening is a predicted signature of quark–gluon plasma (QGP) formation, with a quarkonium state predicted to dissociate when the temperature of the medium is higher than the binding energy of the quarkonium state. A conclusive experimental observation of quarkonium melting coupled with a detailed theoretical understanding of the melting mechanism would enable the use of quarkonia states as temperature probes of the QGP, a long-sought goal in the field of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. However, the interpretation of quarkonia suppression measurements in heavy-ion collisions is complicated by numerous other cold nuclear matter effects that also result in the dissociation of bound quarkonia states. A comprehensive understanding of these cold nuclear matter effects is therefore needed in order to correctly interpret quarkonia production measurements in heavy-ion collisions and to observe the melting of quarkonium states experimentally. In this review, recent measurements of quarkonia production in pA and AA collisions and their state-of-the-art theoretical interpretations will be discussed, as well as the future measurements needed to further the knowledge of cold nuclear matter effects and realize a measurement of quarkonia melting in heavy-ion collisions.

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton–proton, proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J / ψ and Υ produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) χ c , b and η c , b down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low- x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark–gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings.

Abstract:I review the three broad areas where major progress has been reported: The phase structure of strongly interacting matter, the properties of matter at the instant when it freezes out into individual hadrons in the final stage of the expansion of the hot fireball, and the status of the main signatures of the formation of a quark-gluon plasma. In the final section I present some thoughts about what should be done next, both in the experiemntal and the theoretical arena.

Abstract:As the fundamental theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) plays a crucial role in precision tests of the standard model (SM) and in the search for new physics. In this article, we provide a brief overview of recent progress in QCD studies relevant to collider physics, focusing on fixed-order calculations and resummation techniques, parton distribution functions and their calculations, as well as their impact on the search for new physics, SM precision tests, and studying the intrinsic properties of hadrons. Based on this, we also discuss the prospects of their applications and intersections with other disciplines in the future.

Abstract:The strong interaction between heavy quarks and the quark gluon plasma makes the open and hidden charm hadrons be sensitive probes of the deconfinement phase transition in high energy nuclear collisions. Both the cold and hot nuclear matter effects change with the colliding energy and significantly influence the heavy quark and charmonium yield and their transverse momentum distributions. The ratio of averaged quarkonium transverse momentum square and the elliptic flow reveal the nature of the QCD medium created in heavy ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies.
