Abstract:The polymer industry in China has developed rapidly over the past 30 years, which can be greatly attributed to the active R&D conducted by Chinese scholars in polymer reaction engineering (PRE) and their cultivation of high level talents. The research focus on PRE in China has shifted from the application development to both applied and fundamental research at present. The PRE researchers closely collaborate with the enterprises and the world leading scholars. The research objective has been evolved from optimizing efficiency of polymerization processes to precise control of the structures of polymer chains and primary aggregates. This essay summarizes the history, characteristics, and latest progresses of the PRE research in China, with emphasis on the research activities at Zhejiang University.

Abstract:Polymer reaction engineering studies the design, operation, and optimization of reactors for industrial scale polymerization, based on the theory of polymerization kinetics and transfer processes (e.g., flow, heat and mass transfer). Although the foundation and development of this discipline are less than 80 years, the global production of polymers has exceeded 400 million tons per annum. It demonstrates that polymer reaction engineering is of vital importance to the polymer industry. Along with the maturity of production processes and market saturation for bulk polymers, emerging industries such as information technology, modern transportation, biomedicine, and new energy have continued to develop. As a result, the research objective for polymer reaction engineering has gradually shifted from maximizing the efficiency of the polymerization process to the precise regulation of high-end product-oriented macromolecules and their aggregation structures, i.e., from polymer process engineering to polymer product engineering. In this review, the frontiers of polymer reaction engineering are introduced, including the precise regulation of polymer chain structure, the control of primary aggregation structure, and the rational design of polymer products. We narrow down the topic to the polymerization reaction engineering of vinyl monomers. Moreover, the future prospects are provided for the field of polymer reaction engineering.

Abstract:Chemical product engineering represents an emerging discipline rooted to chemical engineering. Its core content of research lies in precision production of chemical structures. Polymer products contain complex structures at multiple scales. Polymerization processes, to a large extent, determine polymer chain microstructures and morphologies. In the recent years, we developed various polymerization processes and produced polymers having precisely designed chain microstructures. These polymer products showed high performances and superior material properties in targeted applications. Our methodology employs kinetic modeling combined with reactor technologies, based on extensive mechanistic research on polymerization mechanisms. In controlled/living radical(co)polymeri-zation, we developed a novel model-based computer-programed semi-batch copolymerization technology that allows unprecedented precise control over end-to-end copolymer composition of individual chains. In catalytic polymerization of olefins, we developed a reactor technology for in-situ production of polyolefin alloys. This paper provides a brief summary of the recent advances in the polymer product engineering researches.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent polymer networks have long been recognized. With the initial focus on the unintended impact of dynamic covalent linkages on the viscoelasticity of commercial rubbers, efforts in modern times have transitioned into designing dynamic covalent polymer networks with unique adaptive properties. Whereas self‐healing and thermoset reprocessing have been the primary motivations for studying dynamic covalent polymer networks, the recent discovery of the vitrimeric rheological behavior and solid‐state plasticity for this type of material have opened up new opportunities in material innovations. This, coupled with the revelation of the dynamic characteristics of commercially relevant polymer building blocks such as esters and urethanes, suggests a promising future for this class of materials.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Polymer synthetic chemistry is a scientific discipline which mainly studies molecular design, synthesis and modification of high molecular weight compounds. It provides indispensable materials that guarantee social progress, improvement of human living standards, and national security. Since the founding of The People's Republic of China 70 years ago, Chinese scholars have made significant contributions to the development of this field. Important achievements include, but not limited to, the design and synthesis of new monomers and polymers, development of highly efficient and environmentally benign catalysts and new polymerization reactions, optimization of key synthetic pathways, and establishment of relationships of new structures and properties. The research and development of synthetic polymer chemistry in China were reviewed, and the broad prospects of the development of various polymerization reactions, control of polymer topology as well as design, synthesis and polymerization of monomers from biomass sources were prospected.

Abstract:Abstract Click reactions, with remarkable merits including high efficiency, atom economy, mild reaction conditions, good functionality tolerance, simple isolation process, and regio‐ and/or stereoselectivity, have drawn intense attention of polymer chemists and found widespread applications in polymer synthesis. Besides the famous Cu(I)‐catalyzed azide–alkyne click reaction, plentiful click reactions, such as Diels–Alder, thiol‐based, nonaldol carbonyl, amino‐yne, hydroxyl–yne, and sulfur(VI) fluoride‐exchange click reactions, have also been introduced into the field of polymer chemistry. With these efficient click reactions in hand, diverse functional groups can be readily incorporated into polymer chains to endow them with desired functionalities. Copolymers with complex structures, such as block, graft, star, and cyclic polymers, can be synthesized using click reaction as polymer conjugation method. These click reactions have also been developed into facile polymerization techniques, that is, click polymerization, for the direct synthesis of linear, hyperbranched, and cross‐linked polymers with various properties. This article intends to give a brief summary of click reactions applied in polymer synthesis, including preparation of polymers and postpolymerization modification of preformed polymers.

Abstract:Since Hermann Staudinger coined the revolutionary concept of macromolecules in 1920,synthetic polymers have served as a major game changer to our society and become indispensable in our daily lives.Unlike biomacro-molecules(e.g.,DNA and proteins)possessing precise mol-ar masses/chain sequences/topologies and specific biolo-gical functions,synthetic polymers are abiotic materials characterized by broad chain length distributions and un-defined sequences.To bridge the gap between natural and synthetic polymers,the biomimetic synthesis of poly-mers with precise chain length,sequences and topologies has been long pursued and yet unmet in polymer science.Notably,Prof.Staudinger had dedicated his career to es-tablish the connection between life science and polymer science,yet this formidable challenge has been far less solved even after a century.In recent years,precision poly-mer chemistry has gradually evolved into an important topic.Here I would like to share my personal thoughts on this rapidly developing field of precision polymer chem-istry,mainly for junior polymer researchers and graduate students.

Abstract:Novel polymerizations based on alkyne monomers are becoming a powerful tool to construct polymers with unique structures and advanced functions in the areas of polymer and material sciences, and scientists have been attracted to develop a variety of novel polymerizations in recent decades. Therein, catalytic systems play an indispensable role in the influence of polymerization efficiencies and the performances of the resultant polymers. Concerning the shortcomings of metallic catalysts, much of the recent research focus has been on metal-free polymerization systems. In this paper, metal-free catalysts are classified and the corresponding polymerizations are reviewed, including organobase-catalyzed polymerizations, Lewis-acid-catalyzed polymerizations, as well as catalyst-free polymerizations. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also briefly discussed.

In recent years, multicomponent reaction as an efficient and green synthesis method has attracted the wide attention of researchers, injecting new and powerful vitality into the field of polymer synthesis. In the study of multicomponent reaction, researchers found the intersection of multicomponent reaction and click chemistry and put forward the concept of Multicomponent Click Reaction (MCR-Click), which is a kind of Multicomponent Reaction with high activity, atomic economy, and some green chemical properties. The application of MCR in polymer chemistry is reviewed in this paper. Abstract:Multicomponent reactions are of substantial significance not only for organic synthesis but also for polymer synthesis due to their more bond-forming events per synthetic operation. Generally due to that there are two or more reactions in one multicomponent reaction system, synergistic catalysis, in which the two or more reactions are activated by two or more different catalysts at the same time, is very important for achieving high-efficiency transformations. However, achieving synergistic catalysis via using two or more different catalyst simultaneously is a great challenge. Here, we propose a new reactant-synergistically catalyzed multicomponent reaction, in which the units coming from the reactant can synergistically catalyze the two reactions at the same time. Moreover, this multicomponent reaction can be extended to multicomponent polymerization, which is a very promising method for the preparation of functional polymers with defined-sequence.

Abstract:In the realm of biological macromolecules, entities such as nucleic acids and proteins are distinguished by their homochirality, consistently defined chain lengths, and integral sequence‐dependent functionalities. Historically, these refined attributes have eluded traditional synthetic polymers, which often exhibit wide variabilities in chain lengths, limited batch‐to‐batch reproducibility, and stochastic monomer arrangements. Bridging this divide represents a pivotal challenge within the domain of polymer science—a challenge that the burgeoning discipline of precision polymer chemistry is poised to address. Recent advancements have yielded precision polymers that boast prescribed monomer sequences and narrow molecular weight distributions, heralding a new era for developing model systems to decipher structure‐property correlations within functional polymers, analogous to those within biological matrices. This review discusses the innovative liquid‐phase and solid‐phase synthesis techniques for creating precision polymers and the advanced characterization tools essential for dissecting their structure and properties. We highlight potential applications in self‐assembly, catalysis, data storage, imaging, and therapy, and provide insights into the future challenges and directions of precision polymers.

Abstract:Chemical transformations of small molecules have served as a rich source of reactions for the development of new polymerization processes, and "click" reaction has the potential to become a powerful polymerization technique. We herein give a brief account of the research efforts devoted to the development of click reaction into a new polymerization process. Remarkable progresses have been made in recent years in the exploration of metal-mediated and metal-free click polymerization systems and in the syntheses of linear and hyperbranched polytriazoles with regioregular molecular structures and advanced functional properties. We also discuss the existing limitations and challenges as well as the promising opportunities and directions in fostering the click polymerization into a versatile tool for the construction of new macromolecules with well-defined structures and multifaceted functionalities.

Abstract:Graphical Abstract Aside from making existing catalysts and polymerization conditions optimal, polymer chemists should focus on developing new catalysts, new synthetic methods, and new polymerization processes. An area that should be of particular interest is that of bio-catalysts and bio-synthesis because of the inevitable exhaustion of crude oils and natural gases on which the modern polymer industry has been built. For polymer physics, the focus should still lie in the development of novel methodologies to solve remaining fundamental problems that are related to polymer processes by concentrating on correlations between polymer properties and chain structures as well as process conditions.
