Abstract:The polymer industry in China has developed rapidly over the past 30 years, which can be greatly attributed to the active R&D conducted by Chinese scholars in polymer reaction engineering (PRE) and their cultivation of high level talents. The research focus on PRE in China has shifted from the application development to both applied and fundamental research at present. The PRE researchers closely collaborate with the enterprises and the world leading scholars. The research objective has been evolved from optimizing efficiency of polymerization processes to precise control of the structures of polymer chains and primary aggregates. This essay summarizes the history, characteristics, and latest progresses of the PRE research in China, with emphasis on the research activities at Zhejiang University.
Polymer product engineering: an emerging discipline of chemical engineering for high performance polymer materials

Abstract:Chemical product engineering represents an emerging discipline rooted to chemical engineering. Its core content of research lies in precision production of chemical structures. Polymer products contain complex structures at multiple scales. Polymerization processes, to a large extent, determine polymer chain microstructures and morphologies. In the recent years, we developed various polymerization processes and produced polymers having precisely designed chain microstructures. These polymer products showed high performances and superior material properties in targeted applications. Our methodology employs kinetic modeling combined with reactor technologies, based on extensive mechanistic research on polymerization mechanisms. In controlled/living radical(co)polymeri-zation, we developed a novel model-based computer-programed semi-batch copolymerization technology that allows unprecedented precise control over end-to-end copolymer composition of individual chains. In catalytic polymerization of olefins, we developed a reactor technology for in-situ production of polyolefin alloys. This paper provides a brief summary of the recent advances in the polymer product engineering researches.

Abstract:Polymer reaction engineering studies the design, operation, and optimization of reactors for industrial scale polymerization, based on the theory of polymerization kinetics and transfer processes (e.g., flow, heat and mass transfer). Although the foundation and development of this discipline are less than 80 years, the global production of polymers has exceeded 400 million tons per annum. It demonstrates that polymer reaction engineering is of vital importance to the polymer industry. Along with the maturity of production processes and market saturation for bulk polymers, emerging industries such as information technology, modern transportation, biomedicine, and new energy have continued to develop. As a result, the research objective for polymer reaction engineering has gradually shifted from maximizing the efficiency of the polymerization process to the precise regulation of high-end product-oriented macromolecules and their aggregation structures, i.e., from polymer process engineering to polymer product engineering. In this review, the frontiers of polymer reaction engineering are introduced, including the precise regulation of polymer chain structure, the control of primary aggregation structure, and the rational design of polymer products. We narrow down the topic to the polymerization reaction engineering of vinyl monomers. Moreover, the future prospects are provided for the field of polymer reaction engineering.

Abstract:Polymer synthetic chemistry is a scientific discipline which mainly studies molecular design, synthesis and modification of high molecular weight compounds. It provides indispensable materials that guarantee social progress, improvement of human living standards, and national security. Since the founding of The People's Republic of China 70 years ago, Chinese scholars have made significant contributions to the development of this field. Important achievements include, but not limited to, the design and synthesis of new monomers and polymers, development of highly efficient and environmentally benign catalysts and new polymerization reactions, optimization of key synthetic pathways, and establishment of relationships of new structures and properties. The research and development of synthetic polymer chemistry in China were reviewed, and the broad prospects of the development of various polymerization reactions, control of polymer topology as well as design, synthesis and polymerization of monomers from biomass sources were prospected.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers are polymeric arrays of monomeric units that are held together by highly directional and reversible noncovalent interactions, resulting in polymeric properties in solution and bulk. It is an interdisciplinary direction of polymer science and supramolecular science. In contrast with conventional polymers on the basis of covalent bond, supramolecular polymers have drawn increasing attention because of many fascinating properties such as reversibility, adaptiveness, self-healing, and stimuli-responsiveness owing to the dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions. These attributes have endowed supramolecular polymers with great potential applications in the field of functional materials, and also have motivated chemists to construct a variety of supramolecular polymers and supramolecular polymeric materials. The fabrication of supramolecular polymers and the investigation of functional supramolecular polymers have been a topic of great interest for the scientific communities in China in recent years. This review article is aimed to summarize some research progresses on supramolecular polymers in China, including the design of building blocks and driving forces for the fabrication of supramolecular polymers with high molecular weight, construction of supramolecular polymers with various topologies, new methods for controllable supramolecular polymerization, and functional supramolecular polymers. The characteristics, advantages, and potential applications of supramolecular polymers, as well as the comparisons of the structure and properties between the covalent polymers and the supramolecular polymers are also discussed. Although polymer science on the basis of covalent bond has been and will still be the core science in the polymer community, supramolecular polymers based on noncovalent interactions are complementary to traditional polymer science and represent new growth point by marrying supramolecular science with polymer science. Last but not least, with the aim to push forward the studies on supramolecular polymers, more attention should be paid to developing and enriching supramolecular polymer chemistry and physics, the methods for their characterization and special supramolecular polymers with tailor-made molecular architectures and functions.

Abstract:Polymer materials have sparked considerable interest from both academic and industrial researchers due to their fantastic features and wide applications. The polymer synthetic method in a facile, rapid, energy-saving and environmentally-friendly fashion has been the goal of considerable researchers. In this regard, frontal polymerization (FP) has emerged as a promising strategy for various polymer materials. In this paper, we will present an overview of the current development of FP technology. Three traditional FP model and newly developed FP fashion are discussed, including thermal frontal polymerization (TFP), isothermal frontal polymerization (IFP) and photoinitiated frontal polymerization (PFP), as well as plasma-ignited FP, ultrasound-assisted FP, infrared laser-ignited FP, Magnetically-induced FP, Multichannel FP and the latest 3D printing FP. We also illustrate the applications of FP in the synthesis of nanocomposites, gradient materials, resins, interpenetrating polymer networks, functional gels and discuss the new development directions. We finally conclude with the challenges remained in this field and the future perspective on FP.

Abstract:This paper made a survey on the research field of polymer physics and characterization achieved by the Chinese mainland since reform and opening-up of China 40 years ago. The examples were selected for the brief introduction from three aspects: the breakthrough in concepts, the development in theories, and the innovation in techniques. It intended to highlight the creativity of modern Chinese scientists in this fundamental research field, in order to encourage young scientists or scholars to take the bigger challenges in scientific research, and to make more contributions in national economy and social development.

Abstract:Supercritical fluid (SCF) is a special thermodynamic state in the phase diagram of substances. Polymerizing olefin in this state will increase the catalyst activity, improve the morphology and size distribution of resulting particles, enhance the solubility and effect of hydrogen in SCF and therefore adjust the molecular weight in a broader range, and promote the copolymerization of olefins. These advantages will be helpful in developing new polyolefin products, especially double-peak molecular weight and high melting strength polypropylene, on the basis of the current polymerization technology. Polymerization of ethylene and propylene in their supercritical state and their industrialization status were reviewed in this paper and the prospects of the ongoing research in supercritical polymerization of olefins in China were discussed, too.

Abstract:Polymer science is in the midst of profound changes in direction. Historically, the foundation of polymer science has been primarily chemistry, i.e., the preparation of polymers and physical-chemical studies of their properties. At the present time, the frontiers of the science are being pushed increasingly toward condensed-matter physics and materials science. One reason for this trend is, undoubtedly, the intellectual nourishment that polymer scientists are finding in these fertile fields which, themselves, are undergoing some great changes of their own. Another, of perhaps even greater potential importance, is the discovery by many scientists with little prior interest in polymers that these materials offer an intellectually challenging area of research. A still further impetus comes from the demands of dynamic “high-technology” industries for new materials with new properties. Eventually, bridges will also be built to the biological sciences. All of these changes are occurring at a time when the ever-increasing power of the instrumentation and computers available to the researcher is providing new insights. Together, these forces are reshaping the way in which basic research on polymeric materials will be conducted in the future.

Abstract:Nanoscale functionalization for polymers is crucial to further understand essential correlation between polymer chain structure and macroscopic properties, which direct influence capability and trend to functionalize polymer materials. It is urgently required to further investigate physics and chemistry of the micro-process. Since 2000, we have been focused on polymer composites micro-processing and physics and chemistry therein. Two representative macroscopic morphologies are mainly concerned ： complex composite particles and nanoporous composite membrane. We have developed new template synthesis approaches to precisely control their macroscopic morphologies, meanwhile to assist a favorable growth and spatial distribution of desired components with soft matter （polymer gels or block copolymers） by specific interactions. The physics and chemistry during the micro-process has been elucidated.

Abstract:In the 100 years since the birth of modern polymer science, polymer chemistry, polymer physics and polymer processing have developed rapidly and formed a more complete body of discipline. As an important part of polymer physics, polymer crystallography focuses on the microscopic crystallization process and reveals the unique behavior of polymer chains. Polymer crystals can be divided into single crystals and polycrystals according to the number of nuclei in an independence structure. Among them, polymer single crystals have closely arranged molecular chains and exhibit perfect geometrical symmetry in macroscopic morphology, with excellent mechanical and optoelectronic properties. However, due to the complexity of molecular chain movement, the formation of polymer single crystals is still very difficult. For decades, a large number of scientists have devoted themselves to the study of polymer single crystals and obtained abundant results. In this paper, we focus on the history and progress of polymer single crystal research, and carefully discuss the crystallization strategies of polymer single crystals and their functionalization applications, hoping to provide effective help to relevant researchers.
