Abstract:Here we show how a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy can be applied to characterize the carbon nanostructures. Direct imaging of the hexagonal network of carbon nanotube enables us to determine the chiral index and to visualize the topological defects, such as pentagons and heptagons. Individual molecular imaging has also become possible, and atomic structure of fullerene molecules (C-60 and C-80) has been successfully identified at a single-molecular basis. Some recent progress for in situ observation of the carbon nanotube/fullerene growth and the defect dynamics is also presented.

Abstract:The failure of individual multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during electron field emission was investigated in situ inside the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Long time emission of a single CNT at the level of tens µA or higher may lead to unrecoverable damage to the CNT. High-resolution TEM observations of the emission failure process shown that the failure was usually companied by structure damage or break of the CNT, and the failure or degradation of the emission characteristics of the CNT was typically initiated at the CNT/substrate contact, defect site or at the open end via the field evaporation or oxidation of the tip of the CNT.

Abstract:Synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by an arc discharge between two graphite electrodes submerged in water under controlled pressure (from 400 to 760 Torr) is reported. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy investigations of the arc discharge product collected from the bottom of the reactor revealed high concentrations of MWCNTs at all pressures. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) on suspensions containing MWCNTs showed that the mean diameter of the nanotubes increases with decreasing pressure. Raman spectroscopy analysis reveals that the relative amount of disordered carbon is significantly less in the low-pressure samples. Furthermore, the yield of the deposit was found to be independent of the pressure. These results suggest that the physical properties of MWCNTs formed by the submerged arc can be controlled by varying the pressure.

Abstract:Field-ion microscopy, a surface probe with atomic resolution, was employed to observe the end structure of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The SWCNTs were assembled onto metallic tips by Van der Waals force. The amorphous carbon and the layer of high electric resistance were removed by heat treatment, and clear image of SWCNTs can be obtained. A model of (7,7) structure of SWCNT was given on the basis of the image, and the diameter of SWCNT was also calculated.

Abstract:A study of the structural transformation of catalytically grown carbon nanotubes induced by annealing under high pressure is presented in this paper. These changes have been monitored with the atomic details using high resolution electron microscopy. The transformation from carbon nanotube into quasi-spherical onion occurs in several steps: first, the shell of the nanotube collapses, and then tends to form a sphere and subsequently an onion-like structure. The transformation process and the effect of high pressure on microstructural changes are discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Applying a full pressure loop, i.e., loading and unloading, on a nanocrystal with in situ observation remains a challenge to experimentalists up until now. Using a multiwalled carbon nanotube, we realize the pressure loop acting on a ${\text{Fe}}_{3}\text{C}$ nanocrystal (with peak value 20 GPa) by electron-beam irradiation with in situ observations inside transmission electron microscopy at $500\text{ }\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\text{C}/\text{ambient}$ temperature. Using density-functional theory calculations, we attribute the unloading process to the formation of one dangling-bond single vacancies under the electron-beam irradiation at room temperature. A theoretical model is presented to understand the process and the results agree well with the experimental measurements.
Probing structural integrity of single walled carbon nanotubes by dynamic and static compression

Abstract:We report on a first study of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) after application of dynamic (shock) compression. The experiments were conducted at 19 GPa and 36 GPa in a recovery assembly. For comparison, an experiment at a static pressure of 36 GPa was performed on the material from the same batch in a diamond anvil cell (DAC). After the high pressure treatment the samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). After exposure to 19 GPa of shock compression the CNT material exhibited substantial structural damage such as CNT wall disruption, opening of the tube along its axis (“unzipping”) and tube shortening (“cutting”). Dynamic compression to 36 GPa resulted in essentially complete CNT destruction whereas at least a fraction of the nanotubes was recovered after 36 GPa of static compression though severely damaged. The results of these shock wave experiments underline the prospect of using SWCNTs as reinforcing units in material WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH &Co. KGaA, Weinheim) Possessing Young's modulus of about 1 TPa, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered the most promising candidates for synthesis of super‐strong materials. In this study the structural integrity of single‐walled (SW) CNTs was probed for the first time by their exposure to extreme dynamic (shock) compression. Whereas the SWCNTs were partially recovered after static compression to 36 GPa, they were completely destroyed by shock impact at the same pressure level.

Abstract:Atomic configurations of individual single-walled and double-walled carbon nanotubes have been obtained by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with atomic sensitivity. A structural reconstruction is carried out by Fourier-filtered analysis of Moire patterns, and it is now possible to acquire the carbon honeycomb lattice images through all of the periphery of individual nanotubes. This visualization technique provides supplementary access in nanoscale characterizations by combining with scanning tunneling microscopy.

Abstract:The microstructural transformations of carbon nanotubes under high-pressure annealing have been studied by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. It is found that under 5.5GPa the microstructure of nanotubes has obviously changed at an annealing temperature of 770℃, while onion-like and ribbon-like structures formed at 950℃. The transformation from carbon nanotubes into quasi-spherical onion occurs in several steps, first the shells of nanotubes collapse, then spheres form and finally onion-like structures appear. The effects of high pressure and annealing temperature on microstructural changes are discussed.

Abstract:Raman spectroscopy has been the most extensively employed method to study carbon nanotubes at high pressures. This review covers reversible pressure-induced changes of the lattice dynamics and structure of single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes as well as irreversible transformations induced by high pressures. The interplay of covalent and van-der-Waals bonding in single-wall nanotube bundles and a structural distortion near 2 GPa are discussed in detail. Attempts of transforming carbon nanotubes into diamond and other "superhard" phases are reviewed critically.

Abstract:Several interesting phenomena are observed when materials are put under pressure. The goal is to achieve modification and control over their mechanical and electronic (conduction) properties. Within this spirit, we have recently focused our attention into how carbon nanostructures respond to hydrostatic pressure. We performed Monte Carlo simulations with the Tersoff potential of various free-standing carbon nanostructures. These range from fullerenes, onions and carbon spheres to nanotubes and nanodiamonds. Our simulations show that the nanostructures undergo some notable structural modifications.

Abstract:High-dose irradiation of nanostructures consisting of multiple graphene shells, such as spherical 'carbon onions' (CO) or cylindrical multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT), induces shell shrinkage by bond reconstruction around irradiation-induced defects. This leads to build-up of internal stresses and to extreme pressures acting on encapsulated materials or on the carbon cores of the nanostructures. We formulate a model which relates the build-up of internal stresses to the point defect dynamics in graphene shells. Calculations are performed for the special case of irradiated CO. The results are in good agreement with experimental findings.

Abstract:Field-ion microscopy (FIM), a tool for surface analysis with atomic resolution, has been employed to observe the end structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). FIM images revealed the existence of open SWCNT ends. Amorphous carbon atoms were also observed to occur around SWCNTs and traditional field evaporation failed to remove them. Heat treatment was found to be efficacious in altering the end structures of SWCNT bundles. Carbon and oxygen atoms released from heated tungsten filament are believed to be responsible for the decoration imposed on the SWCNT ends.

Abstract:Accompanied by the structural phase transition, the electron transport properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes bundles undergo a metal-semiconductor transition at a hydrostatic pressure of 1.5 GPa. In the semiconducting phase there coexist two effects-electron phase coherence which leads to two-dimensional electron weak localization, and Coulomb correlation which leads to the environmental quantum fluctuation of charge transport. We applied hydrostatic pressure up to 10 GPa to single-walled carbon nanotube bundles, and studied the bias voltage dependence of the differential conductance at low temperatures and in strong magnetic fields. Our results show that phase coherence and Coulomb correlation are two effects that independently influence on the electron transport process in the semiconducting phase of the single walled carbon nanotube bundles.

Abstract:Aerosol nanoparticles draw great attention due to their unique physico-chemical properties that can be harnessed for innovative applications as well as for their potential impact on public health and the environment. Microscopic characterization of these particles is critically important to understand the unique particle properties and their interaction with biological systems. Here we report on a simple and efficient method for size, morphology, and crystallinity analyses of aerosol nanoparticles through transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The method uses carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the particle support on conventional TEM grids. The CNT support significantly improves the quality of high resolution TEM (HRTEM) imaging due to the unique properties of CNTs, the high probability of particles sitting at the edge of CNTs, and the minimization of the interference interaction between the electron beam and the supporting substrate. The improved HRTEM images are useful for detailed characterization of nanoparticles, and particularly suitable for analyzing core-shell nanoparticles.

Abstract:We present near-field Raman spectroscopy and imaging of single isolated single-walled carbon nanotubes with a spatial resolution of approximately 25 nm. The near-field origin of the image contrast is confirmed by the measured dependence of the Raman scattering signal on tip-sample distance and the unique polarization properties. The method is used to study local variations in the Raman spectrum along a single single-walled carbon nanotube.

Abstract:The thermal stability of nanotubes under 5.5 GPa was studied by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. According to previous research results, at high vacuum and ambient pressure, the structure of nanotubes will be kept below 3000 K. However, in this experiment, its structure begin to change at only 950 °C under 5.5 GPa; and the nanotubes will transform into graphite at 1150 °C. High pressure may be contributed to the transformation. High pressure may promote nanotubes transform into graphite, and decrease thermal stability.

Abstract:Significant developments in micro-electrical-mechanical systems-based devices for use in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) sample holders have recently led to the commercialization of windowed gas cells that now enable the atomic-resolution visualization of phenomena occurring during gas–solid interactions at atmospheric pressure. In situ TEM study under atmospheric ressures provides unique information that is beneficial to correlating the structure–properties relationship of nanomaterials, particularly under real gaseous environments. We here provide a brief introduction of the advanced instrumentation of windowed gas cells and review recent progress of in situ atomic-resolution TEM study under atmospheric pressures, including some application examples of oxidation and reduction processes, dynamic growth of nanomaterials, catalytic reactions, and “operando” TEM.
