Abstract:In this study, the performance of a combined UV/O-3 process for aquatic sulfadiazine (SDZ) removal was investigated. By comparing with UV irradiation or ozonation, the UV/O-3 process showed excellent performance for SDZ removal, particularly on the mineralization of SDZ. The degradation rate of SDZ by UV/O-3 increased with the increment of O-3 gas concentration and UV intensity. Meanwhile, initial solution pH also played an important role in the UV/O-3 process. The pH increment of solutions (3.0-9.0) could promote the SDZ degradation rate which was mainly ascribed to the generation of (OH)-O-center dot by O-3 self-decomposition and the dissociation of SDZ. But this phenomenon was seriously reversed for the production of more free radical scavengers like CO32- as initial pH increased from 9.0 to 11.0. Two different degradation pathways of SDZ by UV/O-3 were proposed based on the combination of theoretical calculations and experimental intermediate identification. Pathway I was initiated by hydroxyl radicals which involved oxidative cleavage of the S-N bond and pathway II was induced by direct UV irradiation which involved the opening of the pyrimidine ring. According to the results obtained in this work, UV/O-3 was recommended as an effective method to remove SDZ.

Abstract:In this study, a novel electrochemical membrane filtration (EMF) process was proposed to degrade sulfadiazine (SDZ) in drinking water, and the oxidation mechanisms, kinetics, byproducts and primary impact factors were investigated. In the EMF process, a novel membrane was used as the cathode and two graphite plates were used as anodes. Five oxidation byproducts including 4-OH-sulfadiazine or 5-OH-sulfadiazine, 2-aminopyrimidine, 4-amino-N-carbamimidoyl benzene sulfonamide and 2,5-dihydroxypyrimidine were identified. Possible degradation pathways for SDZ were proposed, and OH and Image 11 were recognized to be the major reactive oxygen species contributed for SDZ degradation. The degradation of SDZ by EMF followed pseudo-first-order kinetics in batch experiment and the rate constant increased as the applied voltages increased. Compared with the batch experiment, the flow-through mode of EMF slowed SDZ degradation, and the degradation rate also decreased as the flux increased. However, on the base of mass balance calculations more SDZ was degraded in flow-through mode as compared with that in batch experiment. Finally, the degradation of SDZ in natural waters from a municipal drinking water treatment plant was investigated with flow-through mode, and the result shows that the degradation rate (79%) was slightly lower than that obtained for deionized water due to the low conductivity of real-world water systems.

Abstract:Sulfadiazine (SDZ) is a typical persistent sulfonamide antibiotic, which has been widely detected in natural drinking water sources. The degradation of SDZ by UV/Oxone (potassium monopersulfate compound) was explored in this study. The results showed that Cl− can effectively activate PMS to promote rapid degradation of SDZ in the Oxone process by forming chlorine in the system. Radical quenching tests suggested that radical oxidation, including HO•, SO4•−, and reactive chlorine species (RCS), played an important role by UV/Oxone. It further verified that concentration and distribution of HO•, SO4•−, and RCS were pH-dependent; RCS act as a major contributor at pH 6.0 and pH 7.0 to degrade SDZ in this process. The SDZ degradation rate was firstly increased and then decreased by Cl− and HCO3− (0–10 mM); HA (0–10 mg L−1) exhibited insignificant influence on SDZ degradation. The degradation pathways of SDZ during UV/Oxone and formation pathways of five disinfection byproducts during subsequent chlorination were proposed. The possible DBP precursors formed by SO2 extrusion, hydroxylation, and chlorination of SDZ during UV/Oxone pre-oxidation.

Abstract:A new water falling film dielectric barrier discharge was applied to the degradation of sulfadiazine in the aqueous solution. The various parameters that affect the degradation of sulfadiazine and the proposed evolutionary process were investigated. The results indicated that the inner concentrations of 10 mg/L sulfadiazine can be all removed within 30 min. The optimum pH value was 9.10 and both strong acidic and alkaline solution conditions were not suitable for the degradation. The degradation of sulfadiazine can be enhanced by the addition of hydrogen radical scavengers, but be inhibited by adding hydroxyl radical scavengers. The water falling film dielectric barrier discharge was rather ineffective in mineralization, because of the intermediates were recalcitrant to be degraded. The existence of Fe2+ and CCl4 in the liquid phase can promote the degradation and mineralization of sulfadiazine. It was found that the degradation of SDZ was enhanced by CCl4 was mainly because of the increase of OH due to the reaction of CCl4 with H that reduce the chances of their recombination with OH. Based on the 8 intermediate products identified by LC–MS, the proposed evolution of the degradation process was investigated.

Abstract:In this study, the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics was investigated through persulfate-enhanced UV advanced oxidation process. Factors that may affect the degradation efficiency were analyzed. Results showed that the persulfate imposed a significant enhancement on the UV oxidation process during the sulfathiazole degradation. The combined process of UV/persulfate can effectively remove about 96% of sulfathiazole within 60 min. With the increase in the dosage of persulfate, the removal efficiency increased as well. Different water matrix almost had no effect on the removal efficiency. Two intermediates were found during the sulfathiazole degradation. It can be predicted that the combined process of UV/persulfate has a broad application prospect for removing sulfonamide antibiotics in water treatment.

Abstract:The widespread occurrence of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in natural waters has raised great concerns about their potential risks on human health and ecological systems. This study systematically investigates the degradation of sulfasalazine (SSZ) and its two human metabolites, sulfapyridine (SPD) and 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), by UV and UV/peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) processes. Experimental results show that SPD and 5-ASA were readily degraded upon UV 254 nm direct photolysis, with quantum yields measured to be (8.6 ± 0.8) × 10-3 and (2.4 ± 0.1) × 10-2 mol Einstein-1, respectively. Although SSZ was resistant to direct UV photolysis, it could be effectively removed by both UV/H2O2 and UV/PDS processes, with fluence-based pseudo-first-order rate constants determined to be 0.0030 and 0.0038 cm2 mJ-1, respectively. Second-order rate constant between SO4•- and SSZ was measured as (1.33 ± 0.01) × 109 M-1s-1 by competition kinetic method. A kinetic model was established for predicting the degradation rate of SSZ in the UV/PDS process. Increasing the dosage of PDS significantly enhanced the degradation of SSZ in the UV/PDS process, which can be well predicted by the developed kinetic model. Natural water constituents, such as natural organic matter (NOM) and bicarbonate (HCO3-), influenced the degradation of SSZ differently. The azo functional group of SSZ molecule was predicted as the reactive site susceptible to electrophilic attack by SO4•- by frontier electron densities (FEDs) calculations. Four intermediate products arising from azo bond cleavage and SO2 extrusion were identified by solid phase extraction-liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (SPE-LC-MS/MS). Based on the products identified, detailed transformation pathways for SSZ degradation in the UV/PDS system were proposed. Results reveal that UV/PDS could be an efficient approach for remediation of water contaminated by SSZ and its metabolites.

Abstract:Sulfidation treatment has been considered as an effective method to improve the activity of zero valent iron (ZVI) for reductive removal of contaminants. However, the role and mechanism of sulfide-modified zero valent iron (S-ZVI) in advanced oxidation reaction were worth further exploration. In this study, influences of different reaction conditions, including initial pH, iron dosage, persulfate (PDS) dosage and inorganic ions on sulfadiazine (SDZ) removal by mechanical ball-milling sulfidated microscale zero valent iron (S-ZVIbm)/PDS process and mechanical ball-milling microscale zero valent iron (ZVIbm)/PDS were comparatively investigated. By contrastive analyses, S-ZVIbm exhibited more excellent performance on activation of PDS. Meanwhile, SO42−, Cl−, and NO3− showed different effects on SDZ degradation by ZVIbm/PDS and S-ZVIbm/PDS. The potential mechanisms that S-ZVIbm exceeding ZVIbm in activating PDS were clarified from two aspects, which were better iron dissolution and iron circulation caused by iron sulfides generated during sulfidation treatment. Besides, chemical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies identified that both <math>SO4·-</math> and OH were generated in ZVIbm/PDS and S-ZVIbm/PDS, and <math>SO4·-</math> was the dominant one. Two different degradation pathways of SDZ in the S-ZVIbm/PDS process were proposed based on the experimental intermediates identification and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. According to the results obtained in this study, the S-ZVIbm/PDS process was recommended as an effective method to degrade contaminants.

Abstract:As two kinds of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), sulfadiazine (SD), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) have been found in wastewater. In this study, the removal of SD and SMX through O-3, UV, and UV/O-3 processes were investigated, and the effects of Cl-, Ca2+, and HCO3-/CO32- on SAs removal were explored. SAs could be decomposed through hydroxylation and hydrolysis. Appropriate 80% and 55% of SD and SMX could be quickly decomposed in 12 mg/L O-3 solutions. SD is easier to be ozonized than SMX because the unsaturated degree of pyrimidine ring is higher than that of isoxazole ring. The SD removal rate by UV/O-3 process was lower than that by ozonation because SD was mainly decomposed by direct ozonation, and the O-3 molecules were decomposed under UV light. Nevertheless, the SMX removal was promoted since SMX was mainly degraded by center dot OH. The ions in water may affect the decomposition of SAs. As the center dot OH capturer in water, Cl- or HCO3-/CO32- reacts with center dot OH to produce radicals with weaker oxidizing ability, resulting in the reduction in the SAs removal rates. Meanwhile, they can accelerate the decomposition of O-3 to O-2, which limits the direct oxidation by O-3 molecules. The removal of SAs was promoted in the presence of Ca2+ because the complexation of Ca2+ with the pollutants can promote the indirect oxidation process. Furthermore, Ca2+ can reduce the activation energies of the degradation reaction because of its role as an electron transporter, thus facilitating the degradation of SD and SMX.

Abstract:The degradation of sulfonamides by UV C irradiation in aqueous solutions was investigated and the effects of type of sulfonamides,irradiation intensity,initial concentration and pH value on the removal of sulfonamides were evaluated. The results indicate that the UV C degradation of sulfadiazine,sulfamerazine and sulfamethoxazole well follow pseudo first order kinetic. At pH of 7 and under the conditions of 142 μW/cm2 irradiation intensity and 0. 02 mmol/L initial concentration,67. 80% sulfamethoxazole and only about 15% sulfadiazine and sulfamerazine are removed by UV C irradiation after 30 min. The photodecomposition rate and removal of sulfamethoxazole can be enhanced by increasing UV C irradiation intensity and decreasing initial concentration. Sulfamethoxazole UV C degradation rate is greatly influenced by pH of the solution and in acid condition,degradation rate was higher.

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole, one of the most frequently used sulfonamide antibiotics, has been frequently detected in the aquatic environment. The long-term presence of sulfamethoxazole in natural water bodies can easily lead to the development of resistant bacteria, posing a serious threat to the health and safety of aquatic organisms and humans. In this paper, the degradation of sulfamethoxazole by a combined system of ultrasound/PW12/KI/H2O2 was investigated based on advanced oxidation techniques. The effects of different factors, such as ultrasonic power, initial pH, KI concentration, H2O2 concentration, PW12 concentration and initial concentration of sulfamethoxazole, on the degradation effect were discussed. The reactive radicals in the system, the degradation products of sulfamethoxazole and the main degradation pathways were analyzed. The results indicate that the US/PW12/KI/H2O2 system is of great potential application value in removal of organic pollution and environmental purification.

Abstract:The presence of residual sulfonamide antibiotics such as sulfadimethoxine (SDM) in surface waters has become an emerging concern due to their adverse effects on the environment and human health. In this study, UV alone, UV/PMS and UV/H2O2 degradation processes were studied by comparing the degradation efficiency and reaction mechanisms for SDM. Moreover, we systematically studied various factors that influenced the removal of SDM by UV/PMS, including the pH (5.0, 7.0, and 9.0), oxidant doses, humic acid (HA) and bicarbonate (HCO3-). UV alone can highly degrade SDM, and the combination of PMS or H2O2 with UV radiation further facilitated the oxidation performance. The removal efficiency of SDM in the three degradation systems was recorded with the order of UV/PMS > UV/H2O2 > UV alone. The conditions of [SDM](0): [PMS](0) = 1:20, pH = 7.0, and T = 25 +/- 2 degrees C cause a 100% removal of SDM (5 mg L-1) after 7.0 min of irradiation by a 300 W mercury vapor lamp. Degradation products of SDM were identified using an electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Their structures were further elucidated using MS/MS spectra. Three initial reaction sites of SDM were suggested, which were the direct photooxidation of the -NH2 group, hydroxylation of the -NH2 group and aniline ring via attack by SO4 center dot- and (OH)-O-center dot radicals. It was found that nitrated products were only produced in UV/PMS and UV/H2O2 systems. Ecological structure activity relationships (ECOSAR) analysis revealed that the degradation products of SDM during the three oxidation processes were not considered as toxic to three typical aquatic species. Thus, UV alone, UV/PMS and UV/H2O2 could be applied as an efficient technique for the elimination of SDM from water.

Abstract:In response to antibiotic residues in the water, a novel advanced oxidation technology based on MgO 2 was used to remediate sulfamethazine (SMTZ) pollution in aquatic environments. Upon appropriate regulation, the remarkable removal efficiency of SMTZ was observed in a UV/MgO 2 system, and the pseudo-first-order reaction constant reached 0.4074 min −1 . In addition, the better performance of the UV/MgO 2 system in a weak acid environment was discovered. During the removal of SMTZ, the pathways of SMTZ degradation were deduced, including nitration, ring opening, and group loss. In the mineralization exploration, the further removal of residual products of SMTZ by the UV/MgO 2 system was visually demonstrated. The qualitative and quantitative researches as well as the roles of reactive species were valuated, which revealed the important role of ·O 2 − . Common co-existing substances in actual wastewater such as NO 3 − HA, Cl − , Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ can slightly inhibit the degradation of SMTZ in the UV/MgO 2 system. Finally, the capacity of efficient degradation of SMTZ in actual wastewater by the UV/MgO 2 system was proved. The results indicated that the innovative UV/MgO 2 system was of great practical application prospect in antibiotic residue wastewater remediation.

Abstract:Ozonation has been demonstrated to be an efficient method of water treatment. In this study, the degradation of 20 mg/L of sulfadimethoxine (SDM) in different water matrices during ozonation was investigated. At pH 7.0, 100% removal of SDM was achieved by ozonation within 10 min. The degradation of SDM was more pronounced at acidic pH than under ambient environmental conditions, and was also dependent on different water matrices. Both direct and indirect oxidation of SDM by ozone were observed, and it was also shown that both ozone molecules and hydroxyl radicals were involved in the SDM degradation process, whereas it was found that the saturated ring of SDM made it O3-recalcitrant. Seven transformation products (TPs) were identified during SDM ozonation, allowing three degradation pathways to be proposed. Additionally, the main reaction sites, including N (7) and C (2) on the aniline ring, and the __S__N__ bond, were confirmed both experimentally and theoretically. The toxicity evolution during the degradation process was investigated, and the results showed no toxic intermediate products obtained during ozonation.
Photocatalytic degradation of trace sulfadiazine in water

Abstract:In recent years, antibiotics play an important role in human health and stockbreeding. However, incompletely absorbed antibiotics will eventually find their way into the waterways through wastewater effluents. The occurrences of trace antibiotics in aquatic environments, in the form of their original structures and/or metabolites, will threaten the safety of ecological and human health, and have attracted much concern from the public. In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of trace sulfadiazine in water by UV-TiO2 was investigated. The effects of the TiO2 dosage, initial concentration of SDZ, irradiation time, and solution pH on the rates of degradation were investigated. The results showed that SDZ can be efficiently degraded by the use of TiO2. The degradation reaction followed the characteristics of the first order reaction kinetics. The degradation efficiency of SDZ reached 99.9% under the conditions of initial concentration of SDZ of 2.0 mg·L-1, TiO2 dose of 80 mg·L-1, solution pH of 6.7, and reaction time of 60 min. This indicated that UV-TiO2/EP was an effective method in removing trace sulfadiazine in water.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDUsing persulfate in an advanced oxidation process to degrade organic pollutants has gained more attention in recent years. In this study, an ultraviolet activated persulfate oxidation process used to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) in aqueous solution was investigated. The effect of persulfate dosage, pH, inorganic anions and humic acid on the degradation of CBZ was determined. In addition, the transformation intermediates produced during the process were identified using gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Photobacteria were used to evaluate the toxicity of the transformation products.RESULTSThe results showed that the degradation efficiency increased with increasing persulfate dosage but decreased with the addition of Cl- and NO3-. Acidic conditions were more suitable for the treatment. Sulfate radical was identified to be the predominant radical in the oxidation process when the solution pH was not adjusted. Several compounds including 10, 11-epoxycarbamazepine, acridine-9-carbaldehyde, acridine and other low molecular compounds were identified. A possible degradation pathway was also proposed. Acute toxicity tests indicated that the inhibition ratio decreased from 100% to 65% in 60 min, illustrating that the toxicity significantly decreased with the degradation of CBZ.CONCLUSIONConsidering all of the factors, UV/persulfate may be a promising option for CBZ treatment. Abstract:Sulfadiazine (SDZ) has been frequently detected in surface waters in recent years. We evaluated the kinetics, mechanisms, intermediate products and bacterial community structure that result from the reaction of SDZ with free chlorine (HOCl/OCl-). We examined this in a pilot-scale water distribution system. Neutral pH had the fastest rate of destruction of SDZ. A second-order reaction constant for the destruction of SDZ by chlorine increased with increasing concentration of free chlorine (FC). For different pipe materials, the rate of SDZ degradation decreased as follows: stainless steel (SS) pipe > polyethylene (PE) pipe > ductile iron (DI) pipe. Based on the less complex bacterial diversity and more chlorine-resistant by 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene analysis, SS pipe and PE pipe were more suitable in SDZ degradation in water distribution system (WDS) than DI pipe. In addition, the transformation products from SDZ chlorination were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the products included SO2 extrusion products, haloacetic acids and trihalomethanes. Toxicity tests further confirmed that the toxicity of SDZ chlorination was higher both in low FC (0.7 mg/L) and high FC (1.3 mg/L) in WDS.

Abstract:Sulfadiazine (SDZ) is a common antibiotic pollutant in wastewater. Given that it poses a risk as an environmental pollutant, finding effective ways to treat it is important. In this paper, the composite catalytic material g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/γ-FeOOH was prepared, and its degradation performance was studied. g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/γ-FeOOH had a superior degradation effect on SDZ than g-C 3 N 4 and γ-FeOOH. Compared with different g-C 3 N 4 loadings and different catalyst dosages (5, 10, 25, and 50 mg/L), 2 mg/L g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/γ-FeOOH with a g-C 3 N 4 loading of 5.0 wt% has the highest degradation promotion rate for SDZ, reaching up to 258.75% at 600 min. In addition, the photocatalytic enhancement mechanism of the catalyst was studied. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the enhancement of photocatalytic activity was related to the narrowing of the forbidden band and the local electron density of the valence band. The bandgap of the catalyst was gradually narrowed from 2.7 to 1.05 eV, which can increase the light absorption intensity and expand the absorption edge. The density of states diagram showed that the local resonance at the interface could effectively improve the separation efficiency of e − -h + pairs. Four degradation paths of SDZ were speculated based on DFT calculations. The analysis confirmed that the degradation path of SDZ primarily included Smiles-type rearrangement, SO 2 extrusion, and S-N bond cleavage processes.

Abstract:The existence of sulfonamides (SAs) in water bodies leads to a series of human health problems and environmental risks. Ultrasound (US) enhanced zero-valent iron catalyzed persulfate (ZVI/PS) process is a potential approach to eliminate SAs. However, high energy consumption and large ZVI usage limited its application. In this study, a novel two-stage US-ZVI/PS process was first proposed, which reduced 35% of ZVI usage and saved 74.2% of energy consumption compared with traditional US-ZVI/PS process. The effect of introduction time and operation mode of US on sulfadiazine (SD, 20 mg L-1) degradation was first investigated. The intermittent operation method of US (60 s on/60 s off) could help controlling the releasing of Fe2+ in a reasonable range (0.37-0.56 mg L-1), which was the key reason for the high SD degradation efficiency. SO4 center dot-, (OH)-O-center dot were confirmed as the key radicals for SD removal, and four degradation pathways were proposed. The initial pH of 5.0-7.0, the initial ZVI and PS doses of 0.6 mM and 1.4 mM were determined as the optimal conditions for high SD removal efficiency. Compared to other SD removal processes (traditional US/ZVI/PS, ozonation and UV-based process), two-stage US-ZVI/PS saved 68.3-98.5% energy consumption and enhanced 0.7-14.0 times degradation rate. Therefore, two-stage US-ZVI/PS system is promising and cost-effective for the removal of SD.
