Abstract:Sulfa antibiotics are a family of typical broad-spectrum antibiotics, which have become one of the most frequently detected antibiotics in water, posing a great threat to human health and ecosystem. Potassium ferrate is a new type of high-efficiency multifunctional water treatment agent, collecting the effects of oxidation, adsorption, flocculation, coagulation, sterilization, and deodorization. Performance and mechanism of degradation of typical broad-spectrum antibiotics by Fe(VI)-US were further studied, investigating the degradation effect of sulfa antibiotics by single ultrasound, single potassium ferrate, and potassium ferrate-ultrasound (Fe(VI)-US). It was found that Fe(VI)-US technology had a significant role in promoting the degradation of sulfa antibiotics via orthogonal experiments. Factors evaluated included sulfa antibiotics type, pH value, potassium ferrate dosage, ultrasonic frequency, and ultrasonic power, with the pH value and potassium ferrate dosage being affected most significantly. One reason for synergy facilitating the degradation is the common oxidation of potassium ferrate and ultrasound, and the other is that Fe(III) produced promotes the degradation rate. According to the product analysis and degradation pathways of three sulfa antibiotics, ferrate-sonication sulfa antibiotics are removed by hydroxyl radical oxidation.
Photodegradation of sulfasalazine and its human metabolites in water by UV and UV/peroxydisulfate processes

Abstract:The widespread occurrence of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in natural waters has raised great concerns about their potential risks on human health and ecological systems. This study systematically investigates the degradation of sulfasalazine (SSZ) and its two human metabolites, sulfapyridine (SPD) and 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), by UV and UV/peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) processes. Experimental results show that SPD and 5-ASA were readily degraded upon UV 254 nm direct photolysis, with quantum yields measured to be (8.6 ± 0.8) × 10-3 and (2.4 ± 0.1) × 10-2 mol Einstein-1, respectively. Although SSZ was resistant to direct UV photolysis, it could be effectively removed by both UV/H2O2 and UV/PDS processes, with fluence-based pseudo-first-order rate constants determined to be 0.0030 and 0.0038 cm2 mJ-1, respectively. Second-order rate constant between SO4•- and SSZ was measured as (1.33 ± 0.01) × 109 M-1s-1 by competition kinetic method. A kinetic model was established for predicting the degradation rate of SSZ in the UV/PDS process. Increasing the dosage of PDS significantly enhanced the degradation of SSZ in the UV/PDS process, which can be well predicted by the developed kinetic model. Natural water constituents, such as natural organic matter (NOM) and bicarbonate (HCO3-), influenced the degradation of SSZ differently. The azo functional group of SSZ molecule was predicted as the reactive site susceptible to electrophilic attack by SO4•- by frontier electron densities (FEDs) calculations. Four intermediate products arising from azo bond cleavage and SO2 extrusion were identified by solid phase extraction-liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (SPE-LC-MS/MS). Based on the products identified, detailed transformation pathways for SSZ degradation in the UV/PDS system were proposed. Results reveal that UV/PDS could be an efficient approach for remediation of water contaminated by SSZ and its metabolites.

Abstract:Sulfamethoxazole, one of the most frequently used sulfonamide antibiotics, has been frequently detected in the aquatic environment. The long-term presence of sulfamethoxazole in natural water bodies can easily lead to the development of resistant bacteria, posing a serious threat to the health and safety of aquatic organisms and humans. In this paper, the degradation of sulfamethoxazole by a combined system of ultrasound/PW12/KI/H2O2 was investigated based on advanced oxidation techniques. The effects of different factors, such as ultrasonic power, initial pH, KI concentration, H2O2 concentration, PW12 concentration and initial concentration of sulfamethoxazole, on the degradation effect were discussed. The reactive radicals in the system, the degradation products of sulfamethoxazole and the main degradation pathways were analyzed. The results indicate that the US/PW12/KI/H2O2 system is of great potential application value in removal of organic pollution and environmental purification.

Abstract:In this study, the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics was investigated through persulfate-enhanced UV advanced oxidation process. Factors that may affect the degradation efficiency were analyzed. Results showed that the persulfate imposed a significant enhancement on the UV oxidation process during the sulfathiazole degradation. The combined process of UV/persulfate can effectively remove about 96% of sulfathiazole within 60 min. With the increase in the dosage of persulfate, the removal efficiency increased as well. Different water matrix almost had no effect on the removal efficiency. Two intermediates were found during the sulfathiazole degradation. It can be predicted that the combined process of UV/persulfate has a broad application prospect for removing sulfonamide antibiotics in water treatment.

Abstract:UV/Cl is a cost-effective process and is often used in municipal water treatment plants as well as in industrial applications. UV/Cl method is found highly effective in degrading contaminants, including pathogens, The conventional methods for water treatment have been proven inefficient for the complete elimination of pollutants and generate harmful by-products in the environment. This study evaluated the efficacy of three different treatment methods, chlorination alone, UV photolysis, and UV/Cl, for the degradation of sulfonamides (SAs) in water. The results highlighted that UV/Cl treatment was an efficient method for enhancing the degradation of sulfisoxazole (SFX), sulfadimethoxine (SAT), and sulfaguanidine (SG), with substrates degrading in 5, 6.5, and 4 minutes. The study also investigated the reactive species generated in the UV/Cl system and found that •OH was the species responsible for the elimination of SFX. Additionally, the study explored the intermediate products generated during the degradation of SFX under the UV/Cl system, identifying VI distinct degradation pathways. The presence of •OH radicals significantly enhanced the degradation of SFX, while some chlorine species also contributed to the degradation. The study predicted the toxicity of degradation products from the UV/Cl system using the ECOSAR (Ecological Structure Activity Relationships) program and found that the final degradation products of SFX were non-toxic, but concerns were raised about acute toxicity.

Abstract:Sulfadiazine (SDZ) is a typical persistent sulfonamide antibiotic, which has been widely detected in natural drinking water sources. The degradation of SDZ by UV/Oxone (potassium monopersulfate compound) was explored in this study. The results showed that Cl− can effectively activate PMS to promote rapid degradation of SDZ in the Oxone process by forming chlorine in the system. Radical quenching tests suggested that radical oxidation, including HO•, SO4•−, and reactive chlorine species (RCS), played an important role by UV/Oxone. It further verified that concentration and distribution of HO•, SO4•−, and RCS were pH-dependent; RCS act as a major contributor at pH 6.0 and pH 7.0 to degrade SDZ in this process. The SDZ degradation rate was firstly increased and then decreased by Cl− and HCO3− (0–10 mM); HA (0–10 mg L−1) exhibited insignificant influence on SDZ degradation. The degradation pathways of SDZ during UV/Oxone and formation pathways of five disinfection byproducts during subsequent chlorination were proposed. The possible DBP precursors formed by SO2 extrusion, hydroxylation, and chlorination of SDZ during UV/Oxone pre-oxidation.

Abstract:Antibiotics are emerging contaminants in aquatic environments which pose serious risks to the ecological environment and human health. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on ultraviolet (UV) light have good application prospects for antibiotic degradation. As new and developing UV-AOPs, UV/chlorine and derived UV/chloramine processes have attracted increasing attention due to the production of highly reactive radicals (e.g., hydroxyl radical, reactive chlorine species, and reactive nitrogen species) and also because they can provide long-lasting disinfection. In this review, the main reaction pathways of radicals formed during the UV/chlor (am)ine process are proposed. The degradation efficiency, influencing factors, generation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), and changes in toxicity that occur during antibiotic degradation by UV/chlor (am)ine are reviewed. Based on the statistics and analysis of published results, the effects caused by energy consumption, defined as electrical energy per order (EE/O), increase in the following order: UV/chlorine < UV/peroxydisulfate (PDS)< UV/H2O2 < UV/persulfate (PS) < 265 nm and 285 nm UV-LED/chlorine (EE/O). Some inherent problems that affect the UV/chlor (am)ine processes and prospects for future research are proposed. The use of UV/chlor (am)ine AOPs is a rich field of research and has promising future applications, and this review provides a theoretical basis for that.
Effect of humic substances derived from pastoral areas in Zoige Plateau on photodegradation of sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin

Abstract:Sulfonamides and quinolones are widely used antibiotics. Some end up discharged into aqueous environments where they can seriously affect human health and safety. The photochemical degradation of sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin with the various concentrations was analyzed in different pH natural waters. Meanwhile, the effect of natural humic and fulvic acids on the photodegradation was tracked. The photolysis curves were perfectly consistent with the first-order kinetics. High concentration of antibiotics was not conducive to photodegradation. Photodegradation of ciprofloxacin was generally occur in neutral and alkaline environments, while photodegradation of sulfamethoxazole was generally in lower acidic environments. Persistent free radicals including reactive oxygen species were found in the photolytic reactions. They were found to arise both from auto-decay of the antibiotics and from decay of the humic substances. According to EPR test,·OH and 1O2 both have a good promotion effect on the photodegradation of antibiotics, and the contribution rate of 1O2 (50.63%) is greater than that of •OH (25.56%), indicating that 1O2 is the main active species in the photodegradation of sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin, and the contribution rate of 1O2 produced by humic acids to the photodegradation of antibiotics is greater than that of fulvic acids. Humic substances produced a strong single signal with good symmetry in darkness and light, indicating that the free radicals produced by humic substances were EPFRs with stability and persistence. However, the amount of EPFRs produced by humic acids were more than that of fulvic acids, indicating that the free radicals produced by humic acids were the carbon center free radicals containing oxygen functional groups. Results of this study will provide further comprehensive fundamental data for risk assessment and control of antibiotics in farmland ecosystems in pastoral areas of Zoige Plateau.

Abstract:Pollution of antibiotics in water has aroused global concerns. In this study, non-thermal discharge plasma oxidation was applied to eliminate three antibiotics with different substituent groups and chemical properties, tetracycline (TC), sulfadiazine (SD), and ciprofloxacin (CIP). All the three antibiotics could be effectively degraded but with different reaction kinetics, and the reaction rate of TC was always the highest, followed by SD and CIP. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) including O2−, 1O2, and OH all contributed to the removal of the three antibiotics. The theoretically calculation using Gaussian with DFT indicated that the ionization potential (IP) of the three antibiotics was in the order of TC < SD < CIP. Since the compounds with lower IP values were more vulnerable to ROS attack, the lowest IP of TC suggested that it was the easiest to be degraded among the three target compounds. In addition, the Gaussian calculations predicted that the chemical bonds with low energies were susceptible for oxidation. Integrating the results of theoretical calculation and those of UV–vis spectra, three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and ion chromatography, the degradation pathways of the three antibiotics were figured out, mainly including hydroxylation, decarboxylation, dealkylation, and ring-opening reactions. The results provide clues to predict the potentials and pathways of oxidative degradation of antibiotics in water.

Abstract:In response to antibiotic residues in the water, a novel advanced oxidation technology based on MgO 2 was used to remediate sulfamethazine (SMTZ) pollution in aquatic environments. Upon appropriate regulation, the remarkable removal efficiency of SMTZ was observed in a UV/MgO 2 system, and the pseudo-first-order reaction constant reached 0.4074 min −1 . In addition, the better performance of the UV/MgO 2 system in a weak acid environment was discovered. During the removal of SMTZ, the pathways of SMTZ degradation were deduced, including nitration, ring opening, and group loss. In the mineralization exploration, the further removal of residual products of SMTZ by the UV/MgO 2 system was visually demonstrated. The qualitative and quantitative researches as well as the roles of reactive species were valuated, which revealed the important role of ·O 2 − . Common co-existing substances in actual wastewater such as NO 3 − HA, Cl − , Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , and Mn 2+ can slightly inhibit the degradation of SMTZ in the UV/MgO 2 system. Finally, the capacity of efficient degradation of SMTZ in actual wastewater by the UV/MgO 2 system was proved. The results indicated that the innovative UV/MgO 2 system was of great practical application prospect in antibiotic residue wastewater remediation.

Abstract:Fosfomycin (FOS) as a widely used antibiotic has been found in abundance throughout the environment, but little effort has been devoted to its treatment. In this study, we systemically looked into the degradation of FOS by ultraviolet-activated persulfate (UV/PS) in aqueous solutions. Our findings demonstrated that FOS can be degraded efficiently under the UV/PS, e.g., >90 % of FOS was degraded with 19,200 mJ cm(- 2 )of UV irradiance and 20 mu M of PS. HO center dot was the dominant radical responsible for FOS degradation. FOS degradation increased as PS dosage increased, and higher degradation efficiency was observed at neutral pH. Natural water constitutes either promoted (e.g., Cu2+, Fe3+, and SO2/4 ) or inhibited (e.g., humic acid, HCO3, and CO2/3 ) FOS degradation to varying degrees. Hydroxyl substitution, C-P bond cleavage, and coupling reactions were the major degradation pathways for FOS degradation. Finally, the toxicity evaluation revealed that FOS was toxic to E. coli and S. aureus, but the toxicity of the intermediate products of FOS to E. coli and S. aureus rapidly decreased over time after UV/PS treatment. Therefore, these findings provided a fundamental understanding of the transformation process of FOS and supplied useful information for the environmental elimination of FOS contamination and its toxicity.
Dissecting the ecological risks of sulfadiazine degradation intermediates under different advanced oxidation systems: From toxicity to the fate of antibiotic resistance genes

Abstract:The incomplete degradation of antibiotics in water can produce intermediates that carry environmental risks and thus warrant concerns. In this study, the degradation of high concentrations of antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ) by advanced oxidation processes that leverage different reactive oxide species was systematically evaluated in terms of the influence of different degradation intermediates on the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The ozone, persulfate, and photocatalytic oxidation systems for SDZ degradation are dominated by ozone, direct electron transfer, and singlet oxygen, hole, and superoxide radicals, respectively. These processes produce 15 intermediates via six degradation pathways. Notably, it was determined that three specific intermediates produced by the ozone and persulfate systems were more toxic than SDZ. In contrast, the photocatalytic system did not produce any intermediates with toxicity exceeding that of SDZ. Microcosm experiments combined with metagenomics confirmed significant changes in microbiota community structure after treatment with SDZ and its intermediates, including significant changes in the abundance of Flavobacterium, Dungenella, Archangium, and Comamonas. This treatment also led to the emergence of sulfonamide ARGs. The total abundance of sulfonamide ARGs was found to be positively correlated with residual SDZ concentration, with the lowest total abundance observed in the photocatalytic system. Additionally, the correlation analysis unveiled microbiota carrying sulfonamide ARGs.

Abstract:Abstract Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is an antibiotic and widely present in aquatic environments, so it presents a serious threat to human health and sustainable development. A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma jet was utilized to degrade aqueous SMX, and the effects of various operating parameters (working gas, discharge power, etc) on SMX degradation performance were studied. The experimental results showed that the DBD plasma jet can obtain a relatively high degradation efficiency for SMX when the discharge power is high with an oxygen atmosphere, the initial concentration of SMX is low, and the aqueous solution is under acidic conditions. The reactive species produced in the liquid phase were detected, and OH radicals and O 3 were found to play a significant role in the degradation of SMX. Moreover, the process of SMX degradation could be better fitted by the quasi-first-order reaction kinetic equation. The analysis of the SMX degradation process indicated that SMX was gradually decomposed and 4-amino benzene sulfonic acid, benzene sulfonamide, 4-nitro SMX, and phenylsulfinyl acid were detected, and thus three possible degradation pathways were finally proposed. The mineralization degree of SMX reached 90.04% after plasma treatment for 20 min, and the toxicity of the solution fluctuated with the discharge time but eventually decreased.

Abstract:This study focused on the degradation of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in aqueous solutions by γ-irradiation. The influences of initial sulfamethoxazole concentration, solution pH, various additives (H 2O2, CH3OH, humic acid and thiourea) and absorbed dose on sulfamethoxazole degradation were investigated. At a sulfamethoxazole concentration of 26.4 mg L-1 and an absorbed dose of 1.1 kGy, the extent of sulfamethoxazole degradation was 99 %. The degradation reaction of sulfamethoxazole followed first-order like kinetics. Added humic acid or 0.3 % H2O2 enhanced the sulfamethoxazole degradation, while CH3OH, 0.9 % H2O2 and thiourea additives significantly inhibited sulfamethoxazole degradation. The degradation efficiency was higher under acidic conditions than in neutral or alkaline media. The solution pH and total organic carbon became lower as the absorbed dose increased. Ciprofloxacin Degradation in UV/chlorine Advanced Oxidation Process: Influencing Factors, Mechanisms and Degradation Pathways

Abstract:Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is a widely used third generation fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and has been often detected in wastewater treatment plants. Finding an effective way to remove them from wastewater is of great concern. Ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine advanced oxidation process (AOP) has many advantages in micropollutant removal. In this study, CIP degradation in UV/chlorine process was investigated. Only 41.2% of CIP was degraded by UV photolysis and 30.5% by dark chlorination in 30 min, while 98.5% of CIP was degraded by UV/chlorine process in 9 min. HCO3- had markedly inhibition, NO3- and SO42- had slight inhibition, and Cl- had a marginal inhibition on CIP degradation in UV/chlorine system. The degradation of CIP in UV/chlorine process was mainly attributed to the attack of reactive species. The relative contributions of hydrated electrons (e(aq)(center dot)), hydroxyl radicals (HO center dot), chlorine atoms (Cl-center dot), and UV photolysis were investigated. Under neutral condition in aqueous solution, CIP degradation had highest pseudo first-order reaction rate constant, in which e(aq)(center dot) had the highest contribution, followed by Cl-center dot, HO center dot, and UV photolysis. The intermediates and byproducts were identified and the degradation pathway was proposed. The total organic chlorine (TOCl) and biotoxicity were further assessed. CIP and natural organic matters (NOMs) were removed efficiently in real water. UV/chlorine showed the potential for the wastewater treatment containing CIP.

The results showed that CIP degradation by MPUV/NH2Cl was significantly higher than that by NH2Cl oxidation and MPUV photolysis, and that this degradation processes were consistent with pseudo-first-order kinetics. The initial CIP concentration (7.5-30.2 μM) and the presence of HCO3- (0.5-10 mM) significantly inhibited CIP degradation with kobs,CIP 0.0090-0.0069 and 0.0078-0.0048 cm2/mJ. In contrast, NO3- (50-500 μM) and Br- (0.5-10 mM) significantly promoted the degradation with kobs,CIP 0.0078-0.0102 and 0.0078-0.0124 cm2/mJ. The effect of Cl- (0.5-10 mM) and natural organic matter (1-5 mg/L) were negligible. The NH2Cl dosage (30-60 μM) presented a dual effect, in which its increase within the optimal concentration range (30-40 μM) accelerated CIP degradation due to the formation of reactive radicals, whereas an excessive increase (40-60 μM) quenched the free radicals, ultimately quenching the free radicals and inhibiting the degradation. The optimum pH for CIP degradation under MPUV/NH2Cl treatment was 7.0. The contribution of reactive halogen species (i.e., reactive chlorine species and reactive nitrogen species) to CIP degradation was substantially greater than that of hydroxyl radicals under acidic or neutral conditions. We identified the degradation products of CIP and proposed degradation pathways, which included defluorination and cracking of the piperazine ring, with the latter being dominant. Compared to haloacetic acid (HAA) and nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs), MPUV/NH2Cl significantly reduced trihalomethane (THM) production and theoretical cytotoxicity by 80.1% and 78.4% respectively, compared to the background experiment in natural water at a UV dose of 300 mJ/cm2.
Degradation of the Antibiotic Sulfamethoxazole in Aqueous Solutions by gamma-Irradiation

Abstract:This study focused on the degradation of antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (TAX) in aqueous solutions by gamma-irradiation. The influences of initial sulfamethoxazole concentration, solution pH, various additives (H2O2, CH3OH, humic acid and thiourea) and absorbed dose on sulfamethoxazole degradation were investigated. At a sulfamethoxazole concentration of 26.4 mg L-1 and an absorbed dose of 1.1 kGy, the extent of sulfamethoxazole degradation was 99 %. The degradation reaction of sulfamethoxazole followed first-order like kinetics. Added hutnic acid or 0.3 % H2O2 enhanced the sulfamethoxazole degradation, while CH3OH, 0.9% H2O2 and thiourea additives significantly inhibited sulfamethoxazole degradation. The degradation efficiency was higher under acidic conditions than in neutral or alkaline media. The solution pH and total organic carbon became lower as the absorbed dose increased. The possible degradation pathway was proposed.
Degradation of Sulfadiazine Antibiotics by Water Falling Film Dielectric Barrier Discharge

Abstract:A new water falling film dielectric barrier discharge was applied to the degradation of sulfadiazine in the aqueous solution. The various parameters that affect the degradation of sulfadiazine and the proposed evolutionary process were investigated. The results indicated that the inner concentrations of 10 mg/L sulfadiazine can be all removed within 30 min. The optimum pH value was 9.10 and both strong acidic and alkaline solution conditions were not suitable for the degradation. The degradation of sulfadiazine can be enhanced by the addition of hydrogen radical scavengers, but be inhibited by adding hydroxyl radical scavengers. The water falling film dielectric barrier discharge was rather ineffective in mineralization, because of the intermediates were recalcitrant to be degraded. The existence of Fe2+ and CCl4 in the liquid phase can promote the degradation and mineralization of sulfadiazine. It was found that the degradation of SDZ was enhanced by CCl4 was mainly because of the increase of OH due to the reaction of CCl4 with H that reduce the chances of their recombination with OH. Based on the 8 intermediate products identified by LC–MS, the proposed evolution of the degradation process was investigated.
Enhanced degradation mechanism of sulfamethazine by vacuum ultraviolet/persulfate

Abstract:Vacuum ultraviolet/ persulfate (VUV/PS) has been a prospective method for antibiotics removal, however, the enhanced degradation mechanism is still unclear. This study compared the sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation by VUV/PS and ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) processes using a photoreaction system. Results showed that the SMT degradation rate and PS activation rate by VUV/PS was 1.36 times and 1.39 times those of the conventional UV/PS process under the same dosage of PS, respectively. VUV/PS also achieved a high SMT mineralization. SO4•− and HO• played important roles in the degradation of SMT by both processes, while the role of •O2− was little. SMT concentration changed the distributions of 185 nm and 254 nm photons absorbed by solution components and altered the initiated photolysis reaction. Both processes had faster degradation rates at low initial SMT concentrations and the optimum reaction condition was at solution pH of 5. The inhibited level of the SMT degradation in both processes by four anions was in the following order: NO3−> Cl−> HCO3−>SO42. VUV/PS process was also more efficient than UV/PS for degrading environmental (200 μg/L) and high (5 mg/L) concentration of SMT from three kinds of typical water matrices (tap, river and lake water). Finally, ten photoproducts of SMT degradation by VUV (or UV) were identified, which were mainly the oxidized products of C-N, -NH2 and S-C on SMT molecules, and four degradation pathways were proposed. Overall, these findings could provide useful insights into the application of VUV/PS in efficient antibiotics removal from water.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance has been a serious health threat of widespread concern, as antibiotics are difficult to degrade effectively in the environment. In this study, sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), a common antibiotic in an aqueous solution, was irradiated by low-energy X-ray to investigate the effect of the absorption dose, initial concentration, initial pH, irradiation energy and other conditions on the degradation of SMZ, as well as the kinetic mechanism of SMZ degradation. The results showed that low-energy X-ray irradiation could effectively degrade SMZ in an aqueous solution at different initial concentrations and acid-base degrees, and the degradation effect of irradiation in the range of 60–80 keV is independent of the energy of X-rays. The degradation rate of the SMZ solution, with an initial concentration of 10.70 mg/L, was 94.6% at an absorbed dose of 890 Gray, with a pH of 3.5. Similar to other works on the degradation of antibiotics by ionizing irradiation, the degradation of SMZ solutions conformed to a pseudo-first-order kinetic mechanism.
