Abstract:Similar to the popular older cousins, luminescent carbon dots (C-dots), graphene quantum dots or graphene quantum discs (GQDs) have generated enormous excitement because of their superiority in chemical inertness, biocompatibility and low toxicity. Besides, GQDs, consisting of a single atomic layer of nano-sized graphite, have the excellent performances of graphene, such as high surface area, large diameter and better surface grafting using pi-pi conjugation and surface groups. Because of the structure of graphene, GQDs have some other special physical properties. Therefore, studies on GQDs in aspects of chemistry, physical, materials, biology and interdisciplinary science have been in full flow in the past decade. In this Feature Article, recent developments in preparation of GQDs are discussed, focusing on the main two approaches (top-down and bottom-down). Emphasis is given to their future and potential development in bioimaging, electrochemical biosensors and catalysis, and specifically in photovoltaic devices that can solve increasingly serious energy problems.

Moreover, the integration of specific optical properties, that is, tunable photoluminescence and up-photoluminescence, has led to remarkable bioapplications in bioimaging, biosensors, and phototherapy. Abstract:Graphene with a series of neoteric electronic and optical properties is an intriguing building block for optoelectronic devices. Over the past decade, graphene-based solar cells (SCs) and photodetectors (PDs) which can convert light signals to electrical signals have received burgeoning exploration. However, limited light absorption hampers the performance of these devices. Quantum dots (QDs) possess a strong confinement effect, a large exciton energy, and long exciton lifetime, enhancing the interaction between incident light and graphene. Especially, as the density of states near the Dirac point of graphene is ultralow, it is easy to modify the Fermi level of graphene by inserting quantum dots at the interface between graphene and light, thereby enhancing the performance of graphene-based optoelectronic devices. The characteristics of QDs and crucial physical mechanisms of the interaction and energy transfer in QDs/graphene nanohybrids are systematically addressed. The factors influencing the efficiency of energy transfer are also analyzed quantitatively. Moreover, the experimental process of QD-enhanced technologies for SCs, photoconductors, phototransistors, and photodiode PDs is reviewed. Eventually, a conclusion is given and the remaining challenges and future development for QDs/2D materials hybrid systems is discussed. Possible steps toward large-scale commercial applications and integration into optoelectronic networks are suggested.

Due to quantum confinement and edge effects, GQDs have presented extraordinary properties, attracting extensive attention from scientists in the fields of chemistry, physics, materials, biology, and other interdisciplinary sciences. Herein, we summarize the significant advances achieved by us and other groups in the past few years on both the experimental and theoretical fronts. Synthetic strategies, unique optical and electronic properties, and the promise of GQDs in energy-related devices, such as photovoltaic devices, fuel cells, and light-emitting diodes, are systematically discussed.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have various alluring properties and potential applications, but their large-scale applications are limited by current synthetic methods that commonly produce GQDs in small amounts. Moreover, GQDs usually exhibit polycrystalline or highly defective structures and thus poor optical properties. Here we report the gram-scale synthesis of single-crystalline GQDs by a facile molecular fusion route under mild and green hydrothermal conditions. The synthesis involves the nitration of pyrene followed by hydrothermal treatment in alkaline aqueous solutions, where alkaline species play a crucial role in tuning their size, functionalization and optical properties. The single-crystalline GQDs are bestowed with excellent optical properties such as bright excitonic fluorescence, strong excitonic absorption bands extending to the visible region, large molar extinction coefficients and long-term photostability. These high-quality GQDs can find a large array of novel applications in bioimaging, biosensing, light emitting diodes, solar cells, hydrogen production, fuel cells and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Graphene, the two-dimensional (2D) single-atom carbon sheet, has attracted tremendous research interest due to its large surface area, high carrier transport mobility, superior mechanical fl exibility and excellent thermal/chemical stability. [ 1 ] In particular, its high transport mobility [ 2 , 3 ] and environmentally friendly nature meet important requirements in the fabrication of optoelectronic devices. Apart from the conducting fi lm [ 4 , 5 ] and transparent anode [ 6 ] developed previously, its high mobility renders it a promising alternative as an electron-accepting material for photovoltaic device applications. However, the easy aggregation and the poor dispersion of 2D graphene sheets in common solvents limit its application in such devices. Although effort has been made to prepare solution-processable functionalized graphenes (SPFGs), [ 7 ] the non-uniform size and shape, on a scale of several hundred nanometers and even micrometers of SPFGs, remain big challenges for the fabrication of highperformance photovoltaic cells with active layer thicknesses of only nanometer scale. To facilitate the application of graphene in nanodevices and to effectively tune the bandgap of graphenes, a promising approach is to convert the 2D graphene sheets into 0D graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Apart from unique electron transportation properties, [ 8 ] new phenomena from GQDs associated with quantum confi nement and edge effects are expected. Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) generally refer to nanoscale particles of conventional semiconductors that are subject to the quantum-confinement effect, though other nanomaterials of similar optical and redox properties are also named as QDs even in the absence of strictly defined quantum confinement. Among such nanomaterials that have attracted tremendous recent interest are carbon dots, which are small carbon nanoparticles with some form of surface passivation, and graphene quantum dots in various configurations. In this article, we highlight these carbon-based QDs by focusing on their syntheses, on their photoexcited state properties and redox processes, and on their applications as photocatalysts in visible-light carbon dioxide reduction and in water-splitting, as well as on their mechanistic similarities and differences.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) that are flat 0D nanomaterials have attracted increasing interest because of their exceptional chemicophysical properties and novel applications in energy conversion and storage, electro/photo/chemical catalysis, flexible devices, sensing, display, imaging, and theranostics. The significant advances in the recent years are summarized with comparative and balanced discussion. The differences between GQDs and other nanomaterials, including their nanocarbon cousins, are emphasized, and the unique advantages of GQDs for specific applications are highlighted. The current challenges and outlook of this growing field are also discussed.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon-based nanomaterials, including carbon dots (C-Dots) and the emerging graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are attracting increasing interest in the field of biosensing and bioimaging for their high aqueous solubility, stable photoluminescence (PL), low cytotoxicity, good biocompatibility as well as superior resistance to photobleaching. Compared with C-Dots, the quasi zero-dimensional (0D) GQDs with a few atomic layers can exhibit strong PL without passivation. With these extraordinary properties, GQDs are suitable alternatives as both a versatile platform for biosensing and a promising class of bioimaging probes. In this review, we introduce the synthesis, structure, PL properties and currently available applications of GQDs in biosensing and bioimaging field. We hope this review will provide critical insights to inspire more exciting researches on GQDs for biological applications to better realize the potential of the intriguing GQDs in the near future.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have generated enormous excitement because of their superiority in chemical inertness, biocompatibility and low toxicity. Due to quantum confinement and edge effects, GQDs have excellent properties, attracting extensive attention from scientists in the fields of chemistry, physics, materials science, biology, and other interdisciplinary sciences. In this review, we aim to present a comprehensive view on the synthesis of GQDs for biological applications. We highlight potential methods like acid oxidation, hydrothermal and solvothermal reactions, microwave-assisted methods, electrochemical oxidation, as well as pyrolysis and carbonization for the successful preparation of GQDs. Meanwhile, four representative types of biomedical application based on GQDs, bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, and antimicrobial materials, are introduced and discussed in detail. This work will be very useful for quickly gaining knowledge and experience for synthesizing various GQDs, and developing advanced strategies for creating novel functional GQD-based nanomaterials for further applications in biomedicine, materials science, analytical science, and optical nanodevices.

Abstract:To obtain graphene-based fluorescent materials, one of the effective approaches is to convert one-dimensional (1D) graphene to 0D graphene quantum dots (GQDs), yielding an emerging nanolight with extraordinary properties due to their remarkable quantum confinement and edge effects. In this review, the state-of-the-art knowledge of GQDs is presented. The synthetic methods were summarized, with emphasis on the top-down routes which possess the advantages of abundant raw materials, large scale production and simple operation. Optical properties of GQDs are also systematically discussed ranging from the mechanism, the influencing factors to the optical tunability. The current applications are also reviewed, followed by an outlook on their future and potential development, involving the effective synthetic methods, systematic photoluminescent mechanism, bandgap engineering, in addition to the potential applications in bioimaging, sensors, etc.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are sets of carbon quantum dots derived from graphene or graphene oxide, and they have obvious graphene lattice properties. The number of layers in GQDs is generally no more than five layers, and the diameter size of GQDs is generally less than 10 nm. GQDs have stable photoluminescence characteristics, high specific surface areas, high conductivity levels and adjustable band gaps, and they can be used in sensing systems such as ion detection sensing, optical biosensing, electrochemical biosensing and electronic sensing. Based on the research status of GQDs in recent years and the application background of sensing systems, this review paper focuses on the synthesis strategies, sizes, chemical compositions, crystal structures, optical properties and sensor applications of GQDs.

Abstract:<p>Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are carbon‐based, nanoscale particles that exhibit excellent chemical, physical, and biological properties that allow them to excel in a wide range of applications in nanomedicine. The unique electronic structure of GQDs confers functional attributes onto these nanomaterials such as strong and tunable photoluminescence for use in fluorescence bioimaging and biosensing, a high loading capacity of aromatic compounds for small‐molecule drug delivery, and the ability to absorb incident radiation for use in the cancer‐killing techniques of photothermal and photodynamic therapy. Recent advances in the development of GQDs as novel, multifunctional biomaterials are presented with a focus on their physicochemical, electronic, magnetic, and biological properties, along with a discussion of technical progress in the synthesis of GQDs. Progress toward the application of GQDs in bioimaging, biosensing, and therapy is reviewed, along with a discussion of the current limitations and future directions of this exciting material.</p>

Abstract:Due to the unique quantum confinement and edge effects,graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have exhibited extraordinary properties and potential applications.Herein,the advances on the preparation of GQDs in recent years are summarized,including the "top to down" routine from the graphite sheets through hydrothermal,electrochemical,and chemical oxidation methods,and the "down to up" routine from the carbon-contained organic molecules through solvochemical,sonochemical,and microwave methods.In addition,the applications of the GQDs in optical imaging,biosensor,and electrochemistry analytical fields are introduced.And based on the investigation status of the fluorescent mechanism of GQDs,it is pointed out that combining with the preparation of GQDs,the optical properties of GQDs should be especially studied in the future.

Abstract:In contribution to the high interests and concerns in regards to QDs, their properties and applications, this paper presents highly photoluminescent Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) which have been prepared via a simple one-step method. They were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL); UV-vis diffused reflectance spectra (UV), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The particle size of GQDs can be easily controlled, and these types of GQDs have tunable particle size with the average diameter of 5-7 nm. These GQDs show strong and stable photoluminescence which is dependent on excitation wavelength. It is to be noted that the GQDs can efficiently be taken up by liver cancer cells HepG2. Additionally, due to its high photostability and biocompatibility, the obtained carbon dots are demonstrated as excellent probes in cellular imaging.
