Abstract:Highly bright-fluorescent N (nitrogen), S (sulfur) co-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were synthesized through an modified hydrothermal method. The doped GQDs are smaller than 10 nm in size in average and stable in aqueous solution. Unlike many reports on graphene oxide (GO), the as-synthesized doped GQDs exhibit bright blue photoluminescence (PL) emission and the emission wavelength is excitation-independent. The intriguling results indicate that GQDs may have great potential in the optic and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) that are flat 0D nanomaterials have attracted increasing interest because of their exceptional chemicophysical properties and novel applications in energy conversion and storage, electro/photo/chemical catalysis, flexible devices, sensing, display, imaging, and theranostics. The significant advances in the recent years are summarized with comparative and balanced discussion. The differences between GQDs and other nanomaterials, including their nanocarbon cousins, are emphasized, and the unique advantages of GQDs for specific applications are highlighted. The current challenges and outlook of this growing field are also discussed.

Abstract:Graphene with a series of neoteric electronic and optical properties is an intriguing building block for optoelectronic devices. Over the past decade, graphene-based solar cells (SCs) and photodetectors (PDs) which can convert light signals to electrical signals have received burgeoning exploration. However, limited light absorption hampers the performance of these devices. Quantum dots (QDs) possess a strong confinement effect, a large exciton energy, and long exciton lifetime, enhancing the interaction between incident light and graphene. Especially, as the density of states near the Dirac point of graphene is ultralow, it is easy to modify the Fermi level of graphene by inserting quantum dots at the interface between graphene and light, thereby enhancing the performance of graphene-based optoelectronic devices. The characteristics of QDs and crucial physical mechanisms of the interaction and energy transfer in QDs/graphene nanohybrids are systematically addressed. The factors influencing the efficiency of energy transfer are also analyzed quantitatively. Moreover, the experimental process of QD-enhanced technologies for SCs, photoconductors, phototransistors, and photodiode PDs is reviewed. Eventually, a conclusion is given and the remaining challenges and future development for QDs/2D materials hybrid systems is discussed. Possible steps toward large-scale commercial applications and integration into optoelectronic networks are suggested.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dot (GQD) is a new type of carbon nanometer material. In addition to the excellent properties of graphene, it is superior due to the quantum limit effect and edge effect. Because of its advantages such as water solution, strong fluorescent, small size, and low biological toxicity, it has important application potential in various fields, especially in sensors and biomedical areas, which are mainly used as optical electrical sensors as well as in biological imaging and tumor therapy. In addition, GQDs have very important characteristics, such as optical and electrical properties. There are many preparation methods, divided into top-down and bottom-up methods, which have different advantages and disadvantages, respectively. In addition, the modification methods include heterogeneous doping, surface heterogeneity, etc. There are still many challenges in developing GQDs. For example, the synthesis steps are still hard to conduct, but as the inquiry continues to deepen, GQDs will be revolutionary materials in the future. In this work, the literature concerning research progress on GQDs has been reviewed and summarized, while the key challenges of their application have been pointed out, which may bring new insights to the application of GQDs.

Abstract:Similar to the popular older cousins, luminescent carbon dots (C-dots), graphene quantum dots or graphene quantum discs (GQDs) have generated enormous excitement because of their superiority in chemical inertness, biocompatibility and low toxicity. Besides, GQDs, consisting of a single atomic layer of nano-sized graphite, have the excellent performances of graphene, such as high surface area, large diameter and better surface grafting using pi-pi conjugation and surface groups. Because of the structure of graphene, GQDs have some other special physical properties. Therefore, studies on GQDs in aspects of chemistry, physical, materials, biology and interdisciplinary science have been in full flow in the past decade. In this Feature Article, recent developments in preparation of GQDs are discussed, focusing on the main two approaches (top-down and bottom-down). Emphasis is given to their future and potential development in bioimaging, electrochemical biosensors and catalysis, and specifically in photovoltaic devices that can solve increasingly serious energy problems.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have various alluring properties and potential applications, but their large-scale applications are limited by current synthetic methods that commonly produce GQDs in small amounts. Moreover, GQDs usually exhibit polycrystalline or highly defective structures and thus poor optical properties. Here we report the gram-scale synthesis of single-crystalline GQDs by a facile molecular fusion route under mild and green hydrothermal conditions. The synthesis involves the nitration of pyrene followed by hydrothermal treatment in alkaline aqueous solutions, where alkaline species play a crucial role in tuning their size, functionalization and optical properties. The single-crystalline GQDs are bestowed with excellent optical properties such as bright excitonic fluorescence, strong excitonic absorption bands extending to the visible region, large molar extinction coefficients and long-term photostability. These high-quality GQDs can find a large array of novel applications in bioimaging, biosensing, light emitting diodes, solar cells, hydrogen production, fuel cells and supercapacitors.

Abstract:To obtain graphene-based fluorescent materials, one of the effective approaches is to convert one-dimensional (1D) graphene to 0D graphene quantum dots (GQDs), yielding an emerging nanolight with extraordinary properties due to their remarkable quantum confinement and edge effects. In this review, the state-of-the-art knowledge of GQDs is presented. The synthetic methods were summarized, with emphasis on the top-down routes which possess the advantages of abundant raw materials, large scale production and simple operation. Optical properties of GQDs are also systematically discussed ranging from the mechanism, the influencing factors to the optical tunability. The current applications are also reviewed, followed by an outlook on their future and potential development, involving the effective synthetic methods, systematic photoluminescent mechanism, bandgap engineering, in addition to the potential applications in bioimaging, sensors, etc.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots are a novel form of carbon material. They offer numerous benefits including particle size adjustability, light resistance, ease of functionalization, low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and high-water solubility, as well as their easy accessibility of raw materials. Carbon quantum dots have been widely used in various fields. The preparation methods employed are predominantly top-down methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical and chemical oxidation, as well as bottom-up methods such as templates, microwave, and hydrothermal techniques. This article provides an overview of the properties, preparation methods, raw materials for preparation, and the heteroatom doping of carbon quantum dots, and it summarizes the applications in related fields, such as optoelectronics, bioimaging, drug delivery, cancer therapy, sensors, and environmental remediation. Finally, currently encountered issues of carbon quantum dots are presented. The latest research progress in synthesis and application, as well as the challenges outlined in this review, can help and encourage future research on carbon quantum dots.

Abstract:<p>Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are carbon‐based, nanoscale particles that exhibit excellent chemical, physical, and biological properties that allow them to excel in a wide range of applications in nanomedicine. The unique electronic structure of GQDs confers functional attributes onto these nanomaterials such as strong and tunable photoluminescence for use in fluorescence bioimaging and biosensing, a high loading capacity of aromatic compounds for small‐molecule drug delivery, and the ability to absorb incident radiation for use in the cancer‐killing techniques of photothermal and photodynamic therapy. Recent advances in the development of GQDs as novel, multifunctional biomaterials are presented with a focus on their physicochemical, electronic, magnetic, and biological properties, along with a discussion of technical progress in the synthesis of GQDs. Progress toward the application of GQDs in bioimaging, biosensing, and therapy is reviewed, along with a discussion of the current limitations and future directions of this exciting material.</p>

Abstract:GQDs exhibits exceptional electrochemical activity owing to their active edge sites that make them very attractive for biosensing applications. However, their use in the design of new biosensing devices for application to the detection and quantification of toxins, pathogens, and clinical biomarkers has so far not investigated in detail. In this regard, herein we provide a detailed review on various methodologies employed for the synthesis of GQDs, including bottom-up and top-down approaches, with a special focus on their applications in biosensing via fluorescence, photoluminescence, chemiluminescence, electrochemiluminescence, fluorescence resonance energy transfer, and electrochemical techniques. We believe that this review will shed light on the critical issues and widen the applications of GQDs for the design of biosensors with improved analytical response for future applications.

Abstract:Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) are low dimensional carbon based materials with interesting physical, chemical and biological properties that enable their applications in numerous fields. GQDs possess unique electronic structures that impart special functional attributes such as tunable optical/electrical properties in addition to heteroatom-doping and more importantly a propensity for surface functionalization for applications in biosensing and bioimaging. Herein, we review the recent advancements in the top-down and bottom-up approaches for the synthesis of GQDs. Following this, we present a detailed review of the various surface properties of GQDs and their applications in bioimaging and biosensing. GQDs have been used for fluorescence imaging for visualizing tumours and monitoring the therapeutic responses in addition to magnetic resonance imaging applications. Similarly, the photoluminescence based biosensing applications of GQDs for the detection of hydrogen peroxide, micro RNA, DNA, horse radish peroxidase, heavy metal ions, negatively charged ions, cardiac troponin, etc. are discussed in this review. Finally, we conclude the review with a discussion on future prospects.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have recently emerged as a promising type of low-toxicity, high-biocompatibility, and chemically inert fluorescence probe with a high resistance to photobleaching. They are a prospective substitution for organic materials in light-emitting devices (LED), enabling the predicted concept of much brighter and more robust carbon LED (CLED). However, the mechanism of GQD emission remains an open problem despite extensive studies conducted so far, which is becoming the greatest obstacle in the route of technical improvement of GQD quantum efficiency. This problem is solved by the combined usage of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence dynamics measured by a fluorescence upconversion technique, as well as a nanosecond time-correlated single-photon counting technique. A fluorescence emission-associated dark intrinsic state due to the quantum confinement of in-plane functional groups is found in green-fluorescence graphene quantum dots by the ultrafast dynamics study, and the two characteristic fluorescence peaks that appear in all samples are attributed to independent molecule-like states. This finding establishes the correlation between the quantum confinement effect and molecule-like emission in the unique green-fluorescence graphene quantum dots, and may lead to innovative technologies of GQD fluorescence enhancement, as well as its broad industrial application.

Abstract:We have developed a novel eco-friendly approach involving hydrazine hydrate-assisted hydrothermal cutting followed by functionalization with poly (ethylene imine) (PEI) for fabricating highly fluorescent graphene quantum dots from coffee grounds. The PEI-functionalized graphene quantum dots exhibit enhanced band-edge photoluminescence with single exponential decay. Their preliminary applications in bioimaging and sensing of heavy metals have been demonstrated.

Abstract:In contribution to the high interests and concerns in regards to QDs, their properties and applications, this paper presents highly photoluminescent Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) which have been prepared via a simple one-step method. They were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL); UV-vis diffused reflectance spectra (UV), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The particle size of GQDs can be easily controlled, and these types of GQDs have tunable particle size with the average diameter of 5-7 nm. These GQDs show strong and stable photoluminescence which is dependent on excitation wavelength. It is to be noted that the GQDs can efficiently be taken up by liver cancer cells HepG2. Additionally, due to its high photostability and biocompatibility, the obtained carbon dots are demonstrated as excellent probes in cellular imaging.
