Abstract:Significance: Stable interlocked aryleneethynylene molecular cages were synthesized through dynamic alkyne metathesis using high-activity multidentate molybdenum carbyne catalysts. This solution-phase assembly process is thermodynamically controlled, which is different from the previously investigated approaches that rely on the crystallization of interlocked species from the reaction system. Comment: The precipitation of bis(benzoylbiphenyl)acetylene byproduct drives the equilibrium of the metathesis process forward. The interlocked molecular cage is thermodynamically favored over the simple dimer under the reaction conditions. These interlocked molecules are highly stable because of the strong carbon–carbon bond linkages and they can be purified by silica gel chromatography. The structures were assigned based on mass spectra, NMR, GPC experiments as well as on an analysis of the mixture obtained from decatenation experiments; however, efforts to obtain crystals suitable for X-ray analysis were not successful.
