Abstract:Owing to the unique mechanism of photoelectron storage and release, long persistent phosphorescence, also called long persistent luminescence or long lasting afterglow/phosphorescence, plays a pivotal role in the areas of spectroscopy, photochemistry, photonics and materials science. In recent years, more research has focused on the manipulation of the morphology, operational wavebands and persistent duration of long persistent phosphors (LPPs). These desired achievements stimulated the growing interest in designing bio-labels, photocatalysts, optical sensors, detectors and photonic devices. In this review, we present multidisciplinary research on synthetic methods, afterglow mechanisms, characterization techniques, materials system, and applications of LPPs. First, we introduce the recent developments in LPPs for the synthesis of nanoparticles from the aspects of particle sizes, monodispersity and homogeneity based on the urgent application of bio-imaging. In the later sections, we present the possible mechanisms, which involve the variation of trap distribution during the trapping and de-trapping process, complicated photo-ionization reaction of trap site levels and impurity centers together with their corresponding migration kinetics of carriers. Meanwhile, we emphasize the characterization techniques of defects, used to qualitatively or quantitatively describe the types, concentrations and depths of the traps. This review article also highlights the recent advances in suggested LPPs materials with a focus on the LPPs' hosts and optically active centers as well as their control, tuning and intrinsic links. We further discuss the classification of LPPs based on the different emission and excitation wavebands from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared region along with an overview of the activation mode of afterglow. Afterwards, we provide an exhibition of new products towards diverse application fields, including solar energy utilization, bio-imaging, diagnosis, and photocatalysts. Finally, we summarize the current achievements, discuss the problems and provide suggestions for potential future directions in the aforementioned parts.

Abstract:Long persistent phosphors show great superiority in the applications of biomedicine, energy, environment, and new technology fields owing to the unique separating process of optical excitation and emission, and they arouse wide interests of researchers in materials, chemistry, physics, and biomaterials fields. This review introduces the history and resurrected and thriving evolution process of long persistent phosphors. In addition, this review also elaborates the important timing points, key achievements, and main problems. We believe that the long persistent phosphors will rejuvenate with their unique charm and attract the researchers interested in the luminescence phenomenon to extend the past into the future and continue to renovate.

Abstract:Long persistent phosphors (LPPs) can maintain luminescence for an appreciable time after terminating the excitation light, which can be compared to an optical battery. This intriguing optical phenomenon has attracted a lot of attention in numerous areas, such as safety display, biomedicine and data-storage technologies. Owing to the efficient elimination of autofluorescence interference from biological samples and the ultra-long near-infrared (NIR) afterglow emission, NIR LPPs show deeper tissue penetration depth offering a bright prospect for various bioapplications, such as in vivo biosensing, bioimaging, and imaging-guided therapy. In this review, we focus on the recent developments in the aspect of synthesis procedures, design and applications of NIR LPPs and highlight the rational design of various kinds of transition metal and rare earth ions-doped NIR LPPs in the first to third tissue transparency window. Moreover, some remaining challenges and further efforts towards this rapidly expanding area are also envisioned at the end of this review.

Abstract:Great progress has been made in inorganic persistent phosphors, especially in the recent two decades, motivated by the discoveries of the SrAl2O4:Eu2+-Dy3+ in the green and Cr3+ doped spinel compounds in the deep-red to near-infrared (NIR) spectral regions. However, the physical mechanism behind this kind of “self-sustained” luminescence is still the subject of debate, and the improvement of known persistent phosphors and/or the development of new ones are still a matter of trial-and-error. In this review, starting from the introduction of longstanding histories of persistent luminescence (PersL), we provide comprehensive insights into its physical mechanism. Particular focus is put on the state-of-the-art of designing new persistent phosphors via “bandgap engineering”, based on the knowledge about trapping-detrapping mechanisms of charge carriers and energy level locations of emitting/trapping centers. Recent significant works on PersL observed in organic molecules and phosphorescence observed in inorganic phosphors are also highlighted in order to give a clear distinction between these two long-lived luminescence phenomena. Key challenges, feasible improvements and perspectives of PersL working in the ultraviolent (UV), white, red and NIR (over 1000 nm) regions together with new charging concepts by NIR or visible-light lasers are also presented. It is hoped that this review could give new inspiration for the future development of PersL in emerging applications.

Abstract:Materials with the ability to persistently emit intense near-infrared (NIR) light after ceasing excitation are very useful in many fields. The persistent time is a vital parameter for successful applications. In this study, we developed an emerging NIR super-long persistent luminescent (PersL) material, Cr3+-activated magnetoplumbite oxide La(Zn/Mg)(Ga,Al)(11)O-19:Cr3+, by doping Yb3+ as a new efficient electron trap and incorporating Al3+ to engineer the energy band. We show that fine control of the trap depth and density is the key underpinning for PersL enhancement. The title material emits intense PersL in the spectral range of 600-950 nm with a PersL time of more than 1,000 h. Furthermore, after undergoing such long-term decay, the NIR emission can be revived by photo-/thermo-stimulation. We demonstrate its potential uses in bioimaging, multilevel anti-counterfeiting, tracing, and positioning. This study provides insight into how energy band engineering manipulates electronic structures to achieve high-performance PersL. The new NIR persistent phosphor may be soon utilized in related applications. (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Long lasting alkaline aluminate phosphorescent materials have become a new kind of energy storing materials because of their excellent luminescent properties. This paper reviewed the recent progress on the research in this field. The luminescence characteristics and the long lasting phosphorescent properties of the materials were summarized and new methods for the preparation of the materials were summed up in detail. Two different mechanisms of the afterglow behavior were discussed, then the new research direction and latent application fields were pointed out.

Abstract:An excellent persistent luminescence (PersL) phosphor NaCa2GeO4F:Mn2+,Yb3+ has been synthesized by traditional solid-state reaction. By controlling the occupation sites of Mn2+ emitters, the PersL color of this phosphor can be optionally tuned in the red to green-yellow region, and the maximum spectral shift is more than 50 nm. Significantly, the red PersL can be measured for approximately 13 and 3 h (0.32 mcd/m2) and can be observed for more than 20 and 5 h with dark-adapted vision after exposure to ultraviolet irradiation and artificial sunlight, respectively. The crystal/electronic structure and photoluminescence/PersL properties of this phosphor have been investigated in detail. A series of the excitation temperature-dependent thermoluminescence experiments and the initial rising method have been conducted to study the trap properties of this phosphor. It reveals the reasons for the variation of PersL color, excellent red PersL, and degradation of green-yellow PersL. According to the results, the as-prepared NaCa2GeO4F:Mn2+,Yb3+ can be considered as an excellent red PersL phosphor, and it also has potential for application in optical storage.
Organic Persistent Luminescent Materials: Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescence and Multicolor-Tunable Afterglow

Abstract:Organic persistent luminescent materials have attracted special attention due to their significant applications in optoelectronics, sensors, and security technology areas. In this work, a series of organic compounds (1–4) with twisted electron donor–acceptor structures are successfully designed and synthesized, and then the resultant compounds are dissolved in methyl methacrylate (MMA), and afterward, in situ polymerization realizes single-molecular organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials (P1–P4). All RTP materials show long lifetime, especially P2 exhibits ultralong lifetime of 1.51 s. Low-energy Visible Light Excitable Bi2+-activated Near-Infrared Persistent Phosphors for Information Encryption Application

Abstract:Near-infrared (NIR, 700-900 nm) emissive persistent phosphors have been given substantial attention in the past decade due to their bright future for many advanced applications from night vision surveillance to biomedical imaging. Here, we report the intense NIR persistent luminescence from a series of Bi2+-activated persistent luminescence materials achieved by the cation disorder strategy in CaSnO3 host. Taking Ca-0.95(Na,Gd)(0.025)SnO3: Bi2+ as an example, it exhibits long-lasting NIR afterglow with a peak maximum at 805 nm assigned to the (2)P3(/ 2)(1)& RARR;P-2(1/2) transition of Bi2+ and a long persistence time of more than 24 h after the ceasing of external excitation. More importantly, NIR self-sustained luminescence can be triggered by wideband irradiation with ultraviolet to visible light over 230-550 nm. As expected, 365 nm UV lamp, natural sunlight and LED flash can all effectively charge these NIR persistent phosphors and induce commendable NIR persistent luminescence performance. Considering the invisibility of NIR emission to the naked eye, very broad persistent luminescence excitation band, and long-lasting NIR luminescence after excitation, these Bi2+-activated NIR persistent phosphors are expected to find important applications in optical information storage and anti-counterfeiting fields.

Abstract:Persistent luminescent phosphors can store light energy in advance and release it with a long-lasting afterglow emission. With their ability to eliminate in situ excitation and store energy for long periods of time, they are promising for broad applications, including background-free bioimaging, high-resolution radiography, conformal electronics imaging and multilevel encryption. This Review provides an overview of various strategies for trap manipulation in persistent luminescent nanomaterials. We highlight key examples in the design and preparation of nanomaterials with tunable persistent luminescence, particularly in the near-infrared range. In subsequent sections, we cover the most current developments and trends concerning the use of these nanomaterials in biological applications. Moreover, we assess their advantages and disadvantages compared with conventional luminescent materials for biological applications. We also discuss future research directions and challenges, such as insufficient brightness at the single-particle level, and possible solutions to these challenges.

Abstract:A protocol is presented for accurately quantifying the quantum yield of persistent phosphors, enabling precise performance comparisons. Applied to different phosphors, it reveals a trade‐off between efficiency and brightness, aiding in the selection of appropriate charging conditions. It facilitates the design of persistent materials beyond trial‐and‐error approaches by contributing to the development of standardized characterization tools for the analysis of afterglow mechanisms. Accurate quantification of efficiency enables rigorous comparison between different photoluminescent materials, providing an optimization path critical to the development of next‐generation light sources. Persistent luminescent materials exhibit delayed and long‐lasting luminescence due to the temporary storage of optical energy in engineered structural defects. Standard characterization methods do not provide a universal comparison of phosphor performance, hindering the evaluation of the efficiency of the various processes involved in afterglow. Here, a protocol is established to determine the quantum yield of persistent phosphors by considering the ratio of photons emitted in the afterglow and during charging to those absorbed. The method is first applied to transparent single crystals of the most common persistent phosphors, such as SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ and Y3Al2Ga3O12:Ce3+,Cr3+. The versatility of the methodology is demonstrated by quantifying the quantum yield of a ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ thin film, a material widely used in in vivo imaging. The high efficiency of strontium aluminate is confirmed, and a strong dependence of the obtained values on the illumination conditions is revealed, highlighting a trade‐off between efficiency and brightness. The results contribute to the development of standardized protocols for analyzing afterglow mechanisms and assessing overall efficiency, facilitating rigorous comparison and optimization of persistent materials beyond trial‐and‐error approaches.

Abstract:This review systematically summarizes the latest progress of metal–organic compounds (infinite and discrete structures) for realizing room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP)‐type and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)‐type long persistent luminescence, which provides helpful guidance for developing this promising field with respect to the mechanism of structure–property relationship, optimization of luminescent performance, and extension of practical applications. The excited‐state tuning of luminescent metal–organic compounds has made great progress in the fields of optical imaging, photocatalysis, photodynamic therapy, light‐emitting devices, sensors, and so on. Although metal–organic compounds with high luminescence efficiency can be realized via enhanced molecular rigidity and heavy‐atom effect, their corresponding luminescence lifetimes are still limited on the order of a nanosecond to a millisecond, owing to the inherent competition between luminous efficiency and lifetime. Therefore, the advanced applications (i.e., persistent afterglow imaging, information security, anti‐counterfeiting, and smart materials, among others) related with long persistent luminescence (LPL, typically with the excited‐state lifetime larger than millisecond) are seriously hindered. This review gives a timely and systematic summary of metal–organic compounds for realizing room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP)‐type and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)‐type LPL during last few years. Particularly, based on the perspectives of time, space, and energy dimensions, fundamental materials design and coordination assembly are systematically described for the first time. Moreover, the internal and external factors of influencing the LPL properties in terms of luminescence efficiency, lifetime, and color are illustrated. Last but not least, perspectives and challenges are also discussed for developing LPL from metal–organic compounds.

Abstract:Phosphors with the ultraviolet (UV) persistent luminescence (PersL) may have potential applications such as photo-catalysis, anti-counterfeiting, water disinfecting and photochemistry. Up to now, no more than 20 UV PersL phosphors have been discovered, and no reviews of these UV PersL phosphors and the development in this field have been reported. For this regard, we present an overview of the known UV PersL materials and their PersL properties and list all possible challenges. We wish that this review could offer new inspirations for the following development of persistent luminescence in UV ranges and related applications.
