Abstract:Materials that exhibit visible luminescence upon X-ray irradiation show great potential in the medical and industrial fields. Pure organic materials have recently emerged as promising scintillators for X-ray detection and radiography, due to their diversified design, low cost, and facile preparation. However, recent progress in efficient radioluminescence has mainly focused on small molecules, which are inevitably associated with processability and repeatability issues. Here, a concise strategy is proposed to prepare radioluminescent polymers that exhibit multiple emission colors from blue to yellow with high brightness in an amorphous state by the radical copolymerization of negatively charged polyacrylic acid and different positively charged quaternary phosphonium salts. One of the obtained polymers exhibits excellent photostability under a high X-ray irradiation dosage of 27.35 Gy and has a detection limit of 149 nGy s(-1). This performance is superior to that of conventional anthracene-based scintillators. Furthermore, by simply drop-casting a polymer methanol solution on a quartz plate, a transparent scintillator screen was successfully fabricated for X-ray imaging with a resolution of 8.7 line pairs mm(-1). The pure organic phosphorescent polymers with a highly efficient radioluminescence were demonstrated for the first time, and the strategy reported herein offers a promising pathway to expand the application range of amorphous organic scintillators.
The Synthesis and Afterglow Luminescence Properties of A Novel Red Afterglow Phosphor: Zro2:Sm3+,Sn4+

Abstract:A novel ZrO2:Sm3+,Sn4+ phosphor is synthesized by solid state reaction. The ZrO2:Sm3+ does not show afterglow. But, after doping Sn4+, intense red afterglow luminescence is firstly observed in ZrO2:Sm3+,Sn4+ and it can last more than 1000s at maximum. The afterglow decay curves of ZrO2:Sm3+,Sn4+ are fitted by three exponential components and the decay process consists of initial fast, intermediate and slow decay. The thermoluminescence indicates that the Sn4+ ions induce suitable traps with the depth of 0.436eV and result in efficient afterglow luminescence of ZrO2:Sm3+,Sn4+. The thermoluminescence filling and fading experiments further confirm the important role of the proper shallow traps induced by doping Sn4+ on the afterglow of ZrO2:Sm3+,Sn4+.

Abstract:Fluoride materials provide some distinct advantages owing to their very low phonon frequencies, which makes them as good hosts for downconversion/upconversion phosphors. Oxides with wide band gap and good chemical stability are also easily prepared, which makes them the prior host matrix for phosphors used in LED, long-lasting phosphor, and plasma display panels (PDPs), in which vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation from noble gas discharge is used as the excitation source. In contrast, because of the strong nephelauxetic effect and large crystal-field splitting caused by the coordination of nitrogen atoms, (oxy)nitrides exhibit broad excitation bands covering the emission of the InGaN near-UV and blue LED chips. Moreover, (oxy)nitrides materials feature high thermal and chemical stability due to the stiff frameworks of (Si, Al)-(N, O) tetrahedral in the host lattice. These features lead (oxy)nitrides to be excellent hosts for phosphors, especially those used in LED. In this section, we briefly summarize the crystal structures of somefluorides, (oxy)nitrides, and oxides and present their optical properties as well as give examples for their applications.

Abstract:Abstract Afterglow brightness represents one of the most important characteristics in the application of afterglow materials. High molar absorption coefficient, high afterglow efficiency, and long afterglow lifetimes are required to achieve intense afterglow. However, current strategies cannot simultaneously fulfill these requirements due to specific intrinsic problems. Here, based on the understanding of difluoroboron β ‐diketonate systems, the manipulation of higher triplet excited states is conceived to selectively enhance intersystem crossing with phosphorescence lifetimes remaining long. Aromatic substrates, which possess specific HOMO levels and T 1 levels, are selected for relay synthesis to form difluoroboron β ‐diketonate compounds with very close‐lying S 1 and T 2 levels; according to the energy gap law, such systems exhibit strong intersystem crossing. Upon doping into rigid matrices, the resultant difluoroboron β ‐diketonate systems display the brightest ambient afterglow that has ever been observed.

Abstract:Near‐infrared (NIR) afterglow is keenly sought in emerging areas including deep‐tissue imaging and night‐vision surveillance, while only few successes in powder phosphors are achieved through solid‐state calcination. In this work, a perovskite single crystal, namely Cs2Na0.2Ag0.8InCl6:Yb3+, is grown in solution via a simple hydrothermal reaction. Through a co‐doping strategy involving both Na+ and Yb3+, dual‐band emission in the visible and NIR region is activated by self‐trapped excitons (STE) and lanthanide ions, respectively. Importantly, the total photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) of both bands is boosted to ≈82%. Intriguingly, a long‐lasting afterglow at the NIR band (≈7200 s) and a simultaneous photochromism is observed after ceasing the excitation. Importantly, the transparency of crystals exhibit a pronounced contrast in the decoloration process, enabling a quantitative analysis of photochromism at varied temperatures. On the other hand, the transparent crystals enable the design of a light‐storage battery free of reabsorption, featuring a linear power output with crystal loading. This work proposes a new paradigm to quantitatively correlate the afterglow traps to photochromism, opening many possibilities to practical applications of NIR‐afterglow transparent crystals. Abstract:Abstract High-efficiency narrowband emission is always in the central role of organic optoelectronic display applications. However, the development of organic afterglow materials with sufficient color purity and high quantum efficiency for hyperafterglow is still great challenging due to the large structural relaxation and severe non-radiative decay of triplet excitons. Here we demonstrate a simple yet efficient strategy to achieve hyperafterglow emission through sensitizing and stabilizing isolated fluorescence chromophores by integrating multi-resonance fluorescence chromophores into afterglow host in a single-component copolymer. Bright multicolor hyperafterglow with maximum photoluminescent efficiencies of 88.9%, minimum full-width at half-maximums (FWHMs) of 38 nm and ultralong lifetimes of 1.64 s under ambient conditions are achieved. With this facilely designed polymer, a large-area hyperafterglow display panel was fabricated. By virtue of narrow emission band and high luminescent efficiency, the hyperafterglow presents a significant technological advance in developing highly efficient organic afterglow materials and extends the domain to new applications.

Abstract:A combination of rigid and flexible is proposed host‐guest doping strategies to achieve efficient purely organic phosphorescent scintillation. Under UV‐light excitation, the phosphorescence efficiency of the doped crystal reaches up to 99.4%. Compared with single‐component crystals, the doped crystals display markedly enhanced radioluminescence because of the confinement of isolated chromophores and the effective harvesting of triplet excitons, which benefits potential applications in X‐ray radiography. Scintillators have attracted significant attention due to their wide‐ranging applications in both industrial and medical fields. However, one of the ongoing challenges is the efficient utilization of triplet excitons to achieve high radioluminescence efficiency. Here, a series of purely organic phosphors is presented for X‐ray scintillation, employing a combined rigid and flexible host‐guest doping strategy. The doped crystals exhibit a remarkable maximum phosphorescence efficiency of 99.4% under UV excitation. Furthermore, upon X‐ray irradiation, the radioluminescence intensities of the doped phosphors are markedly higher compared to their single‐component crystal counterparts. Through systematic investigations, it is demonstrated the crucial role of confining isolated chromophores in enhancing scintillation efficiency. Additionally, a transparent scintillator screen fabricated with the doped phosphor exhibits excellent X‐ray imaging performance, achieving a high spatial resolution of 18.0 lp mm−1. This work not only offers valuable insights into suppressing non‐radiative transitions of triplet excitons during scintillation but also opens a new avenue for designing highly efficient purely organic phosphorescent scintillators.

Abstract:A new bulk‐size and highly transparent composite phosphor is fabricated through layer‐by‐layer assembly of micron‐sized hexagonal LiSrAlF6:Cr3+ powder phosphor. The inline transparency of the final bulk phosphor can be controlled from 0 to 90.2% at a large solid concentration of ≈47 vol.%. With high transparency, the new bulk phosphor allows the Near‐infrared phosphor‐conversion light‐emitting diode (NIR pc‐LED) a 2.9 times improvement in efficiency. Near‐infrared (NIR) phosphors offer a novel luminescent solution for NIR spectroscopy, but their efficiency remains low. Herein, it is demonstrated that the high transparency of a phosphor improves its external quantum efficiency by developing a new inorganic–organic composite phosphor. The new bulk‐size and highly transparent composite phosphor is fabricated through layer‐by‐layer assembly of micron‐sized hexagonal LiSrAlF6:Cr3+ powder phosphor. Abstract:Owing to the unique mechanism of photoelectron storage and release, long persistent phosphorescence, also called long persistent luminescence or long lasting afterglow/phosphorescence, plays a pivotal role in the areas of spectroscopy, photochemistry, photonics and materials science. In recent years, more research has focused on the manipulation of the morphology, operational wavebands and persistent duration of long persistent phosphors (LPPs). These desired achievements stimulated the growing interest in designing bio-labels, photocatalysts, optical sensors, detectors and photonic devices. In this review, we present multidisciplinary research on synthetic methods, afterglow mechanisms, characterization techniques, materials system, and applications of LPPs. First, we introduce the recent developments in LPPs for the synthesis of nanoparticles from the aspects of particle sizes, monodispersity and homogeneity based on the urgent application of bio-imaging. In the later sections, we present the possible mechanisms, which involve the variation of trap distribution during the trapping and de-trapping process, complicated photo-ionization reaction of trap site levels and impurity centers together with their corresponding migration kinetics of carriers. Meanwhile, we emphasize the characterization techniques of defects, used to qualitatively or quantitatively describe the types, concentrations and depths of the traps. This review article also highlights the recent advances in suggested LPPs materials with a focus on the LPPs' hosts and optically active centers as well as their control, tuning and intrinsic links. We further discuss the classification of LPPs based on the different emission and excitation wavebands from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared region along with an overview of the activation mode of afterglow. Afterwards, we provide an exhibition of new products towards diverse application fields, including solar energy utilization, bio-imaging, diagnosis, and photocatalysts. Finally, we summarize the current achievements, discuss the problems and provide suggestions for potential future directions in the aforementioned parts.
Ultralong afterglow and unity quantum yield from a transparent CsCdCl3:Mn crystal

Abstract:Transparent afterglow crystals are keenly desired for three‐dimensional information storage. Herein, CsCdCl3 perovskite crystals were grown by a programmable cooling procedure in a hydrothermal reactor. The pristine crystal showed an abnormal optical behavior where the absorption increased by 2.3 folds at high temperature, leading to a fourfold boost of photoluminescence (PL) intensity. After Mn2+ doping, the PL quantum yield was improved to nearly unity. Importantly, the doped crystals exhibited an ultralong afterglow up to 12 h after ceasing UV excitation and a high transmittance up to 75% in the visible region. This work brought a new member to the library of transparent afterglow crystal, opening up many possibilities to advanced applications such as volumetric display and three‐dimensional information encryption.

Abstract:Persistent luminescent phosphors can store light energy in advance and release it with a long-lasting afterglow emission. With their ability to eliminate in situ excitation and store energy for long periods of time, they are promising for broad applications, including background-free bioimaging, high-resolution radiography, conformal electronics imaging and multilevel encryption. This Review provides an overview of various strategies for trap manipulation in persistent luminescent nanomaterials. We highlight key examples in the design and preparation of nanomaterials with tunable persistent luminescence, particularly in the near-infrared range. In subsequent sections, we cover the most current developments and trends concerning the use of these nanomaterials in biological applications. Moreover, we assess their advantages and disadvantages compared with conventional luminescent materials for biological applications. We also discuss future research directions and challenges, such as insufficient brightness at the single-particle level, and possible solutions to these challenges.

Abstract:The ability of carbon dots (CDs) to emit afterglow emission in addition to fluorescence in response to UV-to-visible excitation allows them to be a new class of luminescent materials. When compared with traditional organic or inorganic afterglow materials, CDs have a set of advantages, including small size, ease of synthesis, and absence of highly toxic metal ions. In addition, high dependence of their afterglow color output on temperature, excitation wavelength, and aggregation degrees adds remarkable flexibility in the creation of multimode luminescence of CDs without the need for changing their intrinsic attributes. These characteristics make CDs particularly attractive in the fields of sensing, anticounterfeiting, and data encryption. In this review, we first describe the general attributes of afterglow CDs and their fundamental afterglow mechanism. We then highlight recent strategic advances in the generation or activation of the afterglow luminescence of CDs. Considerable emphasis is placed on the summarization of their emergent afterglow properties in response to external stimulation. We further highlight the emerging applications of afterglow CDs on the basis of their unique optical features and present the key challenges needed to be addressed before the realization of their full practical utility.

Abstract:Organic afterglow materials, developed recently by breaking through the difficulties in modulating ultrafast-decayed excited states, exhibit ultralong-lived emission for persistent luminescence with lifetimes of several orders of magnitude longer than traditional fluorescent and phosphorescent emissions at room temperature. Their exceptional properties, namely ultralong luminescent lifetime, large Stokes shifts, facile excited state transformation, and environmentally sensitive emission, have led to a diverse range of advanced optoelectronic applications. Here, the organic afterglow is reviewed from the perspective of fundamental concepts on both phenomenon and mechanism, examining the technical challenges in relation to excited state tuning and lifetime elongation. In particular, the advances in material design strategies that afford a large variety of organic afterglow materials for a broad utility in optoelectronics including lighting and displays, anti-counterfeiting, optical recording, chemical sensors and bio-imaging are highlighted.

Abstract:An anti‐smudge organic afterglow panel is creatively fabricated based on the dopant‐matrix strategy and through a UV‐curing process under mild conditions. The fluorinated panel not only exhibits an ultralong phosphorescence lifetime of up to 9.45 s, but also shows excellent anti‐smudge and anti‐fingerprint properties, high transparency, flexibility and good water/oil repellency, showing potential applications in displays. Organic afterglow panels show promising applications in display and information anti‐counterfeiting. Like other panels, organic afterglow panels are susceptible to contamination when used, which can affect their aesthetics and clarity. Here, a kind of visible‐light‐excitable anti‐smudge organic afterglow panels based on a dopant‐matrix strategy and easily prepared through the UV light‐curing method is reported. The phosphorescence lifetime of the panel is up to 9.45 s with an afterglow duration longer than 100 s. Moreover, the transparent panels with low dynamic friction (0.129), large water contact angle (108°) and oleic acid contact angle (77°), display high performance of anti‐smudge, water and oil repellency, and removability of fingerprints, avoiding the influence of ink or sewage on its aesthetics and clarity. This study will expand the pathways for practical applications of afterglow materials.

This review classifies and summarizes multicolor afterglow CDs in recent years, including luminescence regulation strategies, preparation methods, and applications, and provide ideas for controlled design and wide application. Afterglow materials have attracted much attention owing to their long luminescence lifetimes, large Stokes shifts, and emission without real‐time excitation. Compared with traditional organic afterglow materials, carbon dots (CDs), as a new afterglow material, have superior properties such as easy preparation, low toxicity, and low cost. The emission color of afterglow CDs can be regulated by external factors such as excitation wavelength, temperature, and time, which is highly significant for expanding the diversified applications to make them available for biotechnology and information applications. This review summarizes the research progress of multicolor afterglow CDs in recent years, including luminescence regulation strategies, preparation methods, and applications. First, the multicolor afterglow CDs are classified into three strategies: multicolor room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), thermally activated delayed fluorescence converted to RTP, and delayed fluorescence based on Förster resonance energy transfer, and the strategies for regulating their luminescence properties are analyzed. Second, the preparation methods of achieving multicolor afterglow CDs are summarized in both matrix‐free and matrix‐confined aspects. Then, applications in anticounterfeiting and information encryption, sensing and bioimaging are introduced in detail. Finally, the future challenges and opportunities of multicolor afterglow CDs are prospected to provide ideas for their controlled design and wide application.

Control of Afterglow Properties

Abstract:In long persistent phosphors, defects play a leading role in their performances, while the host can be used to tune and optimize the optical properties. Several techniques have been developed to generate the different types of defects, through the treatment of the materials under high temperature, high pressure, or reducing/oxidizing atmosphere conditions. These techniques enable defects implantation on a manageable scale and allow for the facile control of the emission band, excitation band, and decay time. With proper control of the optical properties, the latest generation of persistent phosphors demonstrates afterglow emission spectra covering UV-to-Vis-to-NIR region, which can be efficiently generated through the excitation of photons in a wide energy range from x-ray to UV-Vis-NIR light. In this chapter, we give a detailed description of the defect implanting approaches, modulating principles, and performance tunability through defect engineering.
