Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) having low cost and low toxicity and synthesizedviaa green route were applied to establish a fluorescent nanoprobe for the measurement of glyphosate. The synthesis was realizedviaa one-pot hydrothermal procedure usingSophora japonicaleaves as the carbon source. It was found that electron transfer occurred between Fe(3+)and the as-prepared CDs. Therefore, Fe(3+)exhibited a specific dynamic-quenching toward CDs. However, the electron transfer process was inhibited by glyphosate. The fluorescence of the quenched CDs/Fe(3+)system was recovered by the addition of glyphosate. It resulted from the strong complexation between Fe(3+)and the functional groups (like -PO(3)H(2)and -COOH) in the glyphosate molecule. These functional groups captured Fe(3+)from the CD/Fe(3+)system to reduce the electron transfer. With such a design, the rapid detection of glyphosate could be realized by this turn-on fluorescent sensor based on the CD/Fe(3+)system. Under optimal conditions, the CD/Fe(3+)system showed a concentration-dependent fluorescent response toward glyphosate in the linear range from 0.1 to 16 ppm. The limit of detection was calculated to be as low as 8.75 ppb (3 sigma/S). In addition, the successful detection of glyphosate in real samples with satisfactory recoveries exhibited a practical application of the CD/Fe(3+)nanoprobe in food safety and environmental monitoring.
“Off-on” fluorescence probe based on green emissive carbon dots for the determination of Cu2+ ions and glyphosate and development of a smart sensing film for vegetable packaging

Abstract:An ultra-sensitive glyphosate nanosensor, based on carbon dots (CDs), was successfully developed with excellent long-wavelength emission (530 nm), a high quantum yield (41.3%), and an impressive detection limit (0.8 ng·mL−1). This is the lowest value for glyphosate detection achieved by CD-based fluorescence analysis. The sensor was derived from a separate precursor, 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone, and was based on the “off-on” fluorescence analysis, where Cu2+ acts as a dynamic quencher and glyphosate as a fluorescence restorer (excitation wavelength 460 nm). Trace detection of glyphosate is possible with a wide detection range of 50–1300 ng·mL−1 and spiked recoveries between 93.3 and 110.0%. Exploration in depth confirmed that (1) the fluorescence of CDs was derived from the carbon core, (2) the large sp2 conjugated domain consisting of graphitic carbon and nitrogen contributed to the long-wavelength emission, and (3) CDs had an impressive binding interaction with Cu2+, which endow high sensitivity to glyphosate detection. The nanosensor has also be used as a dual-mode visual sensor and a smart sensing membrane that can identify glyphosate on the surface of vegetables, thus showing good practical applicability.Graphical abstractSynthetic methods of G-CDs and its detection mechanisms for glyphosate.

Abstract:Exploring the practical applications of luminescent carbon dots (CDs) plays an important role in analytical chemistry. In this study, maleic anhydride and polyethyleneimine derived phosphorescent CDs can generate oxidative singlet oxygen and superoxide radical under UV light irradiation. The o-phenylenediamine (OPD) was used as a chromogenic agent, which can be oxidized by singlet oxygen and superoxide radical to produce intense yellow color fluorescence. Furthermore, the CDs-photosensitized oxidation of OPD was inhibited by Cu2+ ions. Because the high affinity between glyphosate and Cu2+, CDs-photosensitized oxidation can take place when glyphosate is added into the Cu2 +-mediated system. Utilizing the blue color fluorescence of CDs as internal standard, a ratiometric fluorescent method for glyphosate detection was established. The proposed method can be performed on a smartphone, which exhibits a satisfactory performance for detection of glyphosate residue in real samples rapidly, conveniently, and effectively.

Abstract:Glyphosate has excellent herbicidal activity, and its extensive use may induce residue in the environment and enter into humans living through the food chain, causing negative impact. Here, water-soluble 1.55 nm size nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs) with strong blue fluorescence were synthesized using sodium citrate and adenine. The maximum excitation and emission wavelengths of NCDs were 380 nm and 440 nm, respectively. The above synthesized NCDs were first used for the construction of a fluorescence sensor for glyphosate detection. It was found that Cu2+ could quench the fluorescence of NCDs effectively through the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process, which was confirmed using fluorescence lifetime measurements. Additionally, the fluorescence was restored with the addition of glyphosate. Hence, a sensitive turn-on fluorescence sensor based on NCDs/Cu2+ for glyphosate analysis was developed. The LODs of glyphosate for water and rice samples were recorded as 0.021 μg/mL and 0.049 μg/mL, respectively. The sensor was applied successfully for ultrasensitive and selective detection of glyphosate in environmental water and rice samples with satisfied recoveries from 82.1% to 113.0% using a simple sample pretreatment technique. The proposed strategy can provide a significant potential for monitoring glyphosate residue in water and agricultural product samples.

Abstract:In this work, we reported a green route for the fabrication of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs). Wool, a kind of nontoxic and natural raw material, was chosen as the precursor to prepare CDs via a one-step microwave-assisted pyrolysis process. Compared with previously reported methods for preparation of CDs based on biomass materials, this method was simple, facile and free of any additives, such as acids, bases, or salts, which avoid the complicated post-treatment process to purify the CDs. The CDs have a high quantum yield (16.3%) and their fluorescence could be quenched by silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) based on inner filter effect (IFE). The presence of glyphosate could induce the aggregation of AgNPs and thus result in the fluorescence recovery of the quenched CDs. Based on this phenomenon, we constructed a fluorescence system (CDs/AgNPs) for determination of glyphosate. Under the optimized conditions, the fluorescence intensity of the CDs/AgNPs system was proportional to the concentration of glyphosate in the range of 0.025–2.5μgmL−1, with a detection limit of 12ngmL−1. Furthermore, the established method has been successfully used for glyphosate detection in the cereal samples with satisfactory results.
Fluorescent Carbon Dots for Glyphosate Determination Based on Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer and Logic Gate Operation

Abstract:Herein, a novel method based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between carbon dots (CDs) and glyphosate (Gly) was designed for Gly.detection. CDs were synthesized via a facile and one-step hydrothermal method using citric acid and Tris. The CDs possessed strong blue fluorescence and excitation wavelength-dependent emission behavior with the maximum excitation and emission wavelength at 340nm and 410nm, respectively. However, the presence of glyphosate could effectively quench the fluorescence intensity of the CDs through FRET and this phenomenon has been exploited to design an "AND" logic gate for sensitively sensing Gly for the first time. Furthermore, the proposed method has been successfully utilized to detect glyphosate in water samples with satisfactory results. The detection limit for glyphosate was 0.6 mu mol L-1(3 sigma/k), with the linear range of 0.02-2.0 mu mol L-1. Ratiometric fluorescence probe based on boric acid-modified carbon dots and alizarin red for sensitive and rapid detection of glyphosate

Abstract:By combining boric acid-modified carbon dots (p-CDs) and alizarin red (ARS), a double emission probe p-CDs@ARS with fluorescence at 410 nm and 600 nm is designed for the detection of glyphosate. When Cu2+ is added, it binds with ARS to cause ARS release from p-CDs@ARS, which decreases the fluorescence at 600 nm. However, in the presence of glyphosate, glyphosate competes to the binding of Cu2+, releasing ARS to bind with p-CDs again. Therefore, the fluorescence of 600 nm recovers. Based on this, the fluorescence of 410 nm and 600 nm act as the reference and response signal, respectively, achieving the ratiometric fluorescence detection of glyphosate. The linear range of glyphosate detection is 0.5-50 µM with a limit of detection at 0.37 µM which is well below the maximum residue limit for glyphosate in food. When the probe is used to detect the glyphosate residue in Pearl River water and cucumber, the detection results are well consistent with those detected by HPLC. The established method based on p-CDs@ARS has the advantages that the assembly of ratiometric fluorescence probe is simple, and the detection speed is fast. Additionally, a typical INHIBIT logical system has been successfully constructed based on glyphosate, Cu2+, and the fluorescence signal of p-CDs@ARS.
Enzyme-free Ratiometric Fluorescence and Colorimetric Dual-Signal Determination of Glyphosate Based on Copper Nanoclusters (zif/cuncs) Combined with Blue Carbon Dots (Bcds)

Abstract:A novel ratio fluorescent and colorimetric dual-signal sensing platform for detecting glyphosate based on blue carbon dots (bCDs) combined with ZIF/CuNCs nanomaterials that encapsulate copper nanoclusters (CuNCs) in a metal-organic framework (MOF). In principle, the immobilization of Cu2+ in ZIF/CuNCs results in complexation with imidazole in ZIF, leading to fluorescence quenching of ZIF/CuNCs, while the reference fluorophore bCDs remains unaffected. In addition, the colorimetric sensing strategy was based on the efficient peroxidase-like activity of bCDs binding to Cu2+, catalyzing H2O2 to generate OH. Under this condition, TMB could be oxidized to form blue oxTMB. However, when glyphosate was involved in the system, the fluorescence of ZIF/CuNCs was restored upon due to the strong chelation between Cu2+ and glyphosate, while the peroxidase-like activity of bCDs/Cu2+ decreased and resulted in the generation of fewer oxTMB, accompanied by a lighter blue color. The sensing platform was successfully applied to the determination of glyphosate in real samples of lake water and cabbage, demonstrating reliable and sensitive performance in practical applications.

Abstract:In the study, dissolvable green fluorescent carbon dots (G-CDs) were synthesized utilizing 4-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and p -phenylenediamine ( p -PDA) precursors through a single-step hydrothermal method. The synthesized G-CDs were characterized using UV–visible, fluorescence, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), fluorescence lifetime, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and zeta potential studies. HR-TEM analysis revealed spherical G-CDs with a uniform particle size of ∼ 4.4 nm. The prepared G-CDs showed remarkable stability under varying physiological properties, photostability, and diverse fluorescence properties in a variety of solvents. The solvatochromic behavior has been exploited to detect water molecules in organic solvents. The G-CDs emitted bright green fluorescence at 513 nm when excited at 370 nm and were used as a fluorometric probe for glyphosate (GLY) detection. Selective quenching of G-CDs fluorescence by GLY was confirmed through Stern-Volmer and time-resolved fluorescence analysis. The calculated limit of detection for GLY was 0.044 μM. These probes exhibited excellent selectivity towards GLY even in the presence of other interfering compounds. These properties of G-CDs have also been utilized to detect a GLY herbicide in real food applications.

Abstract:A novel and sensitive fluorescent probe based on Cu2+-modulated polydihydroxyphenylalanine nanoparticles (PDOAs) has been developed for the detection of glyphosate pesticides. Compared to conventional instrumental analysis techniques, fluorometric methods have obtained good results in the field of agricultural residue detection. However, most of the fluorescent chemosensors reported still have some limitations, such as long response times, the high limit of detection, and complex synthetic procedures. In this paper, a novel and sensitive fluorescent probe based on Cu2+ modulated polydihydroxyphenylalanine nanoparticles (PDOAs) has been developed for the detection of glyphosate pesticides. The fluorescence of PDOAs can be effectively quenched by Cu2+ through the dynamic quenching process, which was confirmed by the time-resolved fluorescence lifetime analysis. In the presence of glyphosate, the fluorescence of the PDOAs-Cu2+ system can be effectively recovered due to the higher affinity of glyphosate for Cu2+, and thus released the individual PDOAs. Due to the admirable properties such as high selectivity to glyphosate pesticide, “turn on” fluorescence response, and ultralow detection limit of 1.8 nM, the proposed method has been successfully applied for the determination of glyphosate in environmental water samples.

Abstract:Glyphosate is widely used as an herbicide in weed control. However, the excessive use and residue of glyphosate ad-versely affect the environment. Thus, a rapid and highly sensitive system must be developed for glyphosate detection. Herein, a novel turn-on fluorescent probe was designed and synthesized for glyphosate, that is N-butyl-1,8-naphthalimide-4-hydrazino-6-isopropyl-chromone (NAC). The fluorescence of NAC was quenched by the addition of Cu2+ to form NAC\\Cu2+ complex in dimethyl sulfoxide/2-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazin-1-yl]ethanesulfonic acid (DMSO/HEPES, 9/1, v/v, pH = 7.0). Upon the addition of glyphosate, the fluorescence of NAC\\Cu2+ was recovered through chelation between Cu2+ and glyphosate. The NAC\\Cu2+ complex exhibited the desired linearity of glypho-sate concentration under optimum conditions in the range of 0-40 mu M with a low detection limit of 36 nM. Based on competitive coordination, NAC\\Cu2+ exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity for glyphosate. Moreover, NAC was successfully utilized to detect glyphosate in tap water, local water from Songhua River, soil, maize, and soybean with convenient operations, indicating a promising application in pesticide residue detection.

Abstract:Simultaneous and high-performance detection of pesticides is still a considerable challenge and urgent need. Herein, a dual-emission carbon dots (CDs)-based nonenzymatic fluorescent sensing platform has been developed, which shows excellent sensitivity and selectivity in simultaneously detecting parathion-methyl (MP) and glyphosate. CDs with emissions at 440 nm (bCDs) and 660 nm (rCDs) were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of mulberry leaves and sodium hydroxide. bCDs response to hydrolyzed MP via inner filter effect, while rCDs sense glyphosate with the aid of Cu2+ by static quenching effect. Excellent linear correlations were found for MP (0.3-65.0 & mu;M) and glyphosate (1.0-110.0 & mu;M) with limits of detection at 0.14 and 0.60 & mu;M. Notably, the pre-sented dual-channel strategy was successfully applied in simultaneously detecting MP and glyphosate in food/ herbal samples with acceptable recoveries, good precision, and high selectivity. Moreover, an OR logic gate was achieved for estimating food, herbal, or environmental safety.

Abstract:Glyphosate is a widely used broad-spectrum herbicide in agriculture and horticulture to control a variety of weeds and undesirable plants. However, the excessive use of glyphosate has raised a number of environmental and human health concerns. It is urgent to develop tools to detect of glyphosate. Herein, a novel dual-signal probe CCU-Cu2+ was designed which synthesized on the basis of CCU. CCU exhibited excellent selectivity and great sensitivity for Cu2+ which were based on both fluorescence "turn–off" reaction and comparative color visualisation methods. By the strong chelating ability of glyphosate on Cu2+, the CCU-Cu2+ complex was applied to glyphosate detection in practical samples. The experimental results in vitro showed that CCU-Cu2+ complex was highly selective, rapid, with a low detection limit (1.6 μM), and could be recognised by the naked eye in the detection of glyphosate. Based on the excellent properties of the CCU-Cu2+ complex, we also constructed a smartphone-assisted detection sensing system for glyphosate detection, which has the advantages of precision, sensitivity, and high interference immunity. Moreover, CCU-Cu2+ complex was also successfully employed for exogenous glyphosate imaging in living cells. These characteristics demonstrated that CCU-Cu2+ hold significant potential for detection and imaging of glyphosate in bio-systems.

Abstract:A novel fluorescent probe for Cu2+ determination based on the fluorescence quenching of glyphosate (Glyp)-functionalized quantum dots (QDs) was firstly reported. Glyp had been used to modify the surface of QDs to form Glyp-functionalized QDs following the capping of thioglycolic acid on the core–shell CdTe/CdS QDs. Under the optimal conditions, the response was linearly proportional to the concentration of Cu2+ between 2.4×10−2μgmL−1 and 28μgmL−1, with a detection limit of 1.3×10−3μgmL−1 (3δ). The Glyp-functionalized QDs fluorescent probe offers good sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Cu2+. The fluorescent probe was successfully used for the determination of Cu2+ in environmental samples. The mechanism of reaction was also discussed.

Abstract:We designed a turn-on fluorescence assay for glyphosate based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between negatively charged CdTe quantum dots capped with thioglycolic acid (TGA-CdTe-QDs) and positively charged gold nanoparticles stabilized with cysteamine (CS-AuNPs). Oppositely charged TGA-CdTe-QDs and CS-AuNPs can form FRET donor–acceptor assemblies due to electrostatic interactions, which effectively quench the fluorescence intensity of TGA-CdTe-QDs. The presence of glyphosate could induce the aggregation of CS-AuNPs through electrostatic interactions, resulting in the fluorescence recovery of the quenched QDs. This FRET-based method has been successfully utilized to detect glyphosate in apples with satisfactory results. The detection limit for glyphosate was 9.8ng/kg (3σ), with the linear range of 0.02–2.0μg/kg. The attractive sensitivity was obtained due to the efficient FRET and the superior fluorescence properties of QDs. The proposed method is a promising approach for rapid screening of glyphosate in real samples.
A novel "Turn-Off-On" fluorescent probe for specific sequential detection of Cu2+ and glyphosate and its application in biological imaging

Abstract:As common pollutants, Cu2+ and glyphosate pose a serious threat to human health and the ecosystem. Herein, a fluorescent probe (E)-7-(diethylamino)-N'(4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzyl)-2-oxo-2H chromophore-3-carbazide (DDHC) was designed and synthesised for the sequential recognition of Cu2+ and glyphosate. DDHC has the advantages of a short synthesis path, easy-to-obtain raw materials, good anti-interference ability, and strong stability. The interaction of the DDHC-Cu2+ complexes with glyphosate allows the amino and carboxyl groups in glyphosate molecules to coordinate with Cu2+ strongly, competing for the Cu2+ in the DDHC-Cu2+ complexes and releasing the DDHC, leading to the recovery of fluorescence. The recognition was further validated through Job's plot, HRMS, and DFT calculations. In addition, the successful recovery of Cu2+ and glyphosate in different environmental water samples fully demonstrates the practical application potential of DDHC. Especially, DDHC has low cytotoxicity and can enter zebrafish and HeLa cells, rapidly reacting with Cu2+ and glyphosate in the body, generating visible fluorescence quenching and recovery phenomena, achieving real-time visual monitoring of exogenous Cu2+ and glyphosate in zebrafish and HeLa cells. The targeting and dual selectivity of DDHC greatly enhance its potential application value in the field of detection, providing important theoretical support for studying the fate of multiple pollutants in the environment.
A ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetry dual-signal sensing strategy based on o-phenylenediamine and AuNCs for determination of Cu2+ and glyphosate

Abstract:A ratiometric fluorescence sensing strategy has been developed for the determination of Cu2+ and glyphosate with high sensitivity and specificity based on OPD (o-phenylenediamine) and glutathione-stabilized gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs). Water-soluble 1.75-nm size GSH-AuNCs with strong red fluorescence and maximum emission wavelength at 682 nm were synthesized using GSH as the template. OPD was oxidized by Cu2+, which produced the bright yellow fluorescence oxidation product 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with a maximum fluorescence emission peak at 570 nm. When glyphosate existed in the system, the chelation between glyphosate and Cu2+ hindered the formation of DAP and reduced the fluorescence intensity of the system at the wavelength of 570 nm. Meanwhile, the fluorescence intensity at the wavelength of 682 nm remained basically stable. It exhibited a good linear relationship towards Cu2+ and glyphosate in water in the range 1.0-10 µM and 0.050-3.0 µg/mL with a detection limit of 0.547 µM and 0.0028 µg/mL, respectively. The method was also used for the semi-quantitative determination of Cu2+ and glyphosate in water by fluorescence color changes visually detected by the naked eyes in the range 1.0-10 µM and 0.30-3.0 µg/mL, respectively. The sensing strategy showed higher sensitivity, more obvious color changes, and better disturbance performance, satisfying with the detection demands of Cu2+ and glyphosate in environmental water samples. The study provides a reliable detection strategy in the environment safety fields.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-functional probe, 2-(benzothiazol)-4-(3-hydroxy-4-methylphenyl) imino phenol (BHMH), was synthesized and characterized for the simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+ in dimethyl sulfoxide/4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (DMSO/HEPES) (1:4, v/v, pH = 6.0). The limits of detections (LODs) for Cu2+ and Fe3+ were 9.05 and 48 nM, respectively. Based on the competitive coordination, the complex BHMH-Cu2+/Fe3+ exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity for glyphosate. The LODs of BHMH-Cu2+ and BHMH-Fe3+ for glyphosate were 0.41 and 0.63 μM, respectively. The probe quantitatively detected glyphosate in tap water, Songhua River water, local water and soil, and food samples. The colorimetric on-site glyphosate sensing through the probe BHMH-Cu2+ was also studied based on smartphones. BHMH and BHMH-Cu2+/Fe3+ exhibited outstanding imaging capabilities for Cu2+, Fe3+, and glyphosate in living cells with low cytotoxicity, especially the first time for glyphosate.

Abstract:By taking advantage of the competitive reaction between Cu2+, Au/Ag bimetallic nanoclusters capped with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (AuAgNCs@11-MUA) and glyphosate, a simple and sensitive "turn -on" fluorescence method was devised for glyphosate detection. The fluorescence of AuAgNCs@11-MUA could be selectively quenched by Cu2+ owing to the binding between Cu2+ and carboxyl groups of AuAgNCs@11-MUA. Due to the specific interaction between Cu2+ and functional groups of glyphosate, the pre -incubation of Cu2+ and glyphosate could disturb the combination of Cu2+ and AuAgNCs@11-MUA and AuAgNCs@11-MUA emitted intense fluorescence again, and thus glyphosate could be quantitatively detected. The optimum pH was 7.0 and the incubation time of Cu2+ and glyphosate was 2 min. Under the optimized conditions, the developed method showed a good linear relationship for detection of glyphosate in the concentration range of 0.025-1.0 mu g/mL, with an inspiring detection limit as low as 8 ng/mL. In addition, an "Implication" logic gate was rationally devised by employing Cu2+ and glyphosate as inputs. Such unprecedented "turn -on" analytical proposal possessed many advantages such as fast response time, high selectivity and sensitivity. The AuAgNCs@11-MUA-Cu2+ system could be used for detection of glyphosate in actual water samples with satisfactory results.
