Abstract:Herein, a dual-signal sensing strategy based on ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetry for Cu2+ and glyphosate determination was constructed. Fluorescence silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) were prepared by hydrothermal reaction, which has maximum fluorescence intensity under the excitation of 355 nm. o-Phenylenediamine (OPD) was oxidized through Cu2+ to generate 2,3-diaminophenazine (oxOPD). The obtained oxOPD showed a strong absorption peak at 417 nm and quenched the fluorescence of SiNPs at 446 nm due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Meanwhile, oxOPD produced a new fluorescence emission at 556 nm forming a ratiometric state. With increasing Cu2+, the original solution changed from colorless to yellow. When glyphosate was present, the interaction between Cu2+ and the functional groups of glyphosate could reduce the oxidation of oxOPD, resulting in the enhancement of fluorescence at 446 nm and the decrease of fluorescence at 556 nm. Furthermore, the addition of glyphosate changed yellow solution to colorless. Under the optimal conditions of OPD (1 mM), 20 mM Tris–HCl buffer (pH 7.5), and incubation time (4 h), the ratiometric fluorescence sensor had good selectivity and showed a wide linear range of 0.025–20 μM with the LOD of 0.008 μM for Cu2+ and 0.15–1.5 μg/mL with the LOD of 0.003 μg/mL for glyphosate, respectively. Besides, it is worth mentioning that this developed sensing system showed good performance in real samples, providing a simple and reliable dual-signal detection strategy.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Glyphosate has excellent herbicidal activity, and its extensive use may induce residue in the environment and enter into humans living through the food chain, causing negative impact. Here, water-soluble 1.55 nm size nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCDs) with strong blue fluorescence were synthesized using sodium citrate and adenine. The maximum excitation and emission wavelengths of NCDs were 380 nm and 440 nm, respectively. The above synthesized NCDs were first used for the construction of a fluorescence sensor for glyphosate detection. It was found that Cu2+ could quench the fluorescence of NCDs effectively through the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process, which was confirmed using fluorescence lifetime measurements. Additionally, the fluorescence was restored with the addition of glyphosate. Hence, a sensitive turn-on fluorescence sensor based on NCDs/Cu2+ for glyphosate analysis was developed. The LODs of glyphosate for water and rice samples were recorded as 0.021 μg/mL and 0.049 μg/mL, respectively. The sensor was applied successfully for ultrasensitive and selective detection of glyphosate in environmental water and rice samples with satisfied recoveries from 82.1% to 113.0% using a simple sample pretreatment technique. The proposed strategy can provide a significant potential for monitoring glyphosate residue in water and agricultural product samples.

Abstract:Glyphosate is a highly effective, low-toxicity, broad-spectrum herbicide, which is extensively used in global agriculture to control weeds and vegetation. However, glyphosate has become a potential threat to human and ecosystem because of its excessive usage and its bio-concentration in soil and water. Herein, a novel turn-on fluorescent probe, N-n-butyl-4-(3-pyridin)ylmethylidenehydrazine-1,8-naphthalimide (NPA), is proposed. It efficiently detected Cu2+ within the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.21 μM and displayed a dramatic turn-off fluorescence response in CH3CN. NPA-Cu2+ complex was employed to selectively and sensitively monitor glyphosate concentrations in real samples accompanied by a fluorescence turn-on mode. A good linear relationship between NPA and Cu2+ of glyphosate was found in the range of 10–100 μM with an LOD of 1.87 μM. Glyphosate exhibited a stronger chelation with Cu2+ than NPA and the system released free NPA through competitive coordination. The proposed method demonstrates great potential in quantitatively detecting glyphosate in tap water, local water from Songhua River, soil, rice, millet, maize, soybean, mung bean, and milk with mild conditions, and is a simple procedure with obvious consequences and no need for large instruments or pretreatment.

Abstract:In this work, a novel ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor by coupling mesoporous silica spheres-coated nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs@SiO2) and bovine serum albumin-stabilized gold nanoclusters (BSA-AuNCs) was developed for sensitive detection of glyphosate. BSA-AuNCs nanocomposites were covalently connected onto the surface of amino-functionalized N-CDs@SiO2 nanospheres, causing the core-satellite probes with two fluorescence emissions at 436 and 651 nm, respectively, under a single excitation of 360 nm. The N-CDs@SiO2@BSA-AuNCs “signal on–off–on” ratiometric fluorescent probes could realize highly selective differentiation and accurate detection of glyphosate based on the fluorescence quenching of Cu2+ on BSA-AuNCs and glyphosate-induced fluorescence recovery due to the strong complexation of glyphosate toward Cu2+. The developed ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor exhibited excellent selectivity to glyphosate, wide detectability in a concentration range of 5–100 ng/mL, high sensitivity with a low detection limit of 3.4 ng/mL, as well as fascinating reliability and practicability in real malt samples with recoveries of 94.81–101.61%. This study provides a universal platform for versatile sensing of more trace analytes in complex matrices and can be extended for wide application in the environment and food safety fields.

Abstract:In this study, a novel colorimetric method for rapid, sensitive and low-cost detection of glyphosate was developed using cysteamine-stabilized gold nanoparticles (CS-AuNPs). The CS-AuNPs could be aggregated easily in the presence of glyphosate through electrostatic interaction in acidic medium, resulting in a shift in the surface plasmon band and a consequent color change from red to blue (or purple). Therefore, the content of glyphosate could be determined by monitoring with the naked eyes or a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The detection limit of the present method for glyphosate was 5.88 × 10−8 M, with the linear range of 0.500–7.00 μM. The proposed method is a promising approach for on-site screening of glyphosate content in environmental water samples without using any costly instruments.

Abstract:Flavanone administered to female Fischer 344 rats (1.00 mmol/kg per day for seven days) did not induce ethylmorphine demethylation, aniline hydroxylation, hexobarbital oxidation or aldrin epoxidation. Flavanone at 0.05 mmol/kg per day for seven days increased glutathione-S-transferase activity with 1,2-dichloro-4-nitrobenzene and 1,2-epoxy-3-(p-nitrophenoxy) propane as substrates. Flavanone at 0.05 mmol/kg per day for seven days increased the glucuronidation of 1-naphthol, and at 0.20 mmol/kg increased the glucuronidation of chloramphenicol. Flavanone administration did not alter sulphotransferase activity with 2-naphthol as the substrate and did not enhance glutathione-S-transferase or glucuronyltransferase activity when added in vitro.

Abstract:A novel dual-signal fluorometric and colorimetric probe FMDH (5-FAM-Met-Asp-His-NH 2 ), incorporating a tripeptide (Met-Asp-His-NH 2 ) linked to 5-carboxyfluorescein (5-FAM), was firstly synthesised. FMDH demonstrated exceptional selectivity and sensitivity, rapid response, wide pH response range and robust anti-interference capabilities for monitoring Cu 2+ . This was achieved through a distinctive naked-eye colorimetric and fluorescent quenching behaviour. A good linearity within the range of 0–3 μM (R 2 = 0.9914) was attained, and the limit of detection (LOD) for Cu 2+ was 47.4 nM. Furthermore, the FMDH -Cu 2+ ensemble responded to glyphosate with notable selectivity and sensitivity. A good linear correlation (R 2 = 0.9926) was observed at the lower concentration range (2.4–7.8 μM) and achieving a detection limit as low as 29.9 nM. The response time of FMDH with Cu 2+ and glyphosate were less than 20 s, and the pH range of 7–11 that was suitable for practical application under physiological pH conditions. MTT assays confirmed that FMDH offers good permeability and low toxicity, facilitating successful application in imaging analysis of Cu 2+ and glyphosate in living cells and zebrafish. In addition, FMDH was employed in the detection of these analytes in real water samples. Cost-effective, highly sensitive and easily prepared FMDH -impregnated test strips were developed for the efficient visual detection of Cu 2+ and glyphosate under 365 nm UV light. Increasing concentrations of Cu 2+ and glyphosate resulted in notable colour changes under 365 nm UV light, enabling visual semi-quantitative analysis via a smartphone colour-analysis App .

Abstract:In present study, bovine serum albumin (BAS)-stabilized gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) combined with Cu 2+ were used for rapid fluorimetric detection of glyphosate in water samples. The morphology and optical properties of synthesized BSA-AuNCs were characterized by TEM, UV–Vis spectroscopy and fluorescence techniques. Theoretically, Cu 2+ would react with the tryptophan of BSA-AuNCs, thereby disrupting the surface structure of BSA-AuNCs and allowing aggregation of dispersed BSA-AuNCs, which showed the function to quenching the red fluorescence of BSA-AuNCs at 680 nm. However, in the presence of glyphosate in the system, there are strong chelation interactions between Cu 2+ and glyphosate, so the fluorescence of BSA-AuNCs was restored and the recovered intensity is related to the glyphosate concentration. As a result, a linear graph between the fluorescence intensity with glyphosate concentration in the range of 0.06–12 μg/mL was plotted and used for quantification of glyphosate with a detection limit of 8 ng/mL. Satisfactory recoveries were obtained in the determination of spiked water samples, demonstrating that the prepared BSA-AuNCs can be used as a promising tool in the field of environment monitoring of glyphosate residue.
Synthesis and application of purine-based fluorescence probe for continuous recognition of Cu 2+ and glyphosate

Abstract:In this study, a novel fluorescent sensor, N,N -dimethyl-4-((2-(8-m-ethyl-9-(naphthalen-1-yl)-9H-purin-6-yl)hydrazineylidene)methyl)aniline( PHA ), which was constructed via Schiff base reaction of purine derivatives and dimethylaminobenzaldehyde. This probe showed significant selective fluorescence quenching of Cu 2+ , and accompanying with an increase in Cu 2+ concentration and a change in solution color from colorless to yellow. The outstanding features of PHA include low detection limit (0.429 μM), strong anti-interference ability and fast response time. We further investigated the chelation mechanism of PHA and Cu 2+ by Job's plot experiment, density generalization theory (DFT), and the probe PHA can form a 1:2 complex with Cu 2+ ions, leading to a fluorescence quenching process, thus realizing the rapid detection of Cu 2+ . In addition, this new fluorescent sensor [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] can be used to detect pesticide residues in solution. When the [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] system was mixed with glyphosate solution, that a fluorescence recovering was observed. This may be because glyphosate chelates more strongly with Cu 2+ ions, making the copper ions dissociated from the [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] system. The detection limit of the fluorescent sensor [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] for glyphosate was 18.77 nM. Finally, the sensor system has been successfully applied in fluorescence imaging of glyphosate in living cells.

Abstract:In this work, a dual-signal output sensor was developed for the ratiometrically electrochemical and colorimetric detection of glyphosate (GLYP) based on the duplex nature of 2D Cu-TCPP(Fe) nanosheets (2D Cu-TCPP(Fe) NSs). Cu active center sites in 2D Cu-TCPP(Fe) NSs could transform into CuCl for signal amplification in the presence of chloride ions (Cl − ), which dropped dramatically upon GLPY addition due to the strong interaction between GLYP and cuprous ion triggering the competitive reaction with the conversion of CuCl into Cu-GLYP complex. Meanwhile, the constant current signals of Fe 2+/3+ in the iron-porphyrin structure of Cu-TCPP(Fe) served as an inner reference, resulting in a ratiometrically electrochemical GLYP sensor. Moreover, 2D Cu-TCPP(Fe) NSs with intrinsic peroxidase-like activity was employed for the colorimetric determination of GLYP based on the specific inhibitory effect of GLYP on the peroxidase activity of 2D Cu-TCPP(Fe) nanozyme. GLYP concentrations can be quantified in the range from 1.0 × 10 −10 M to 1.0 × 10 −6 M and 1.0 × 10 −9 M to 1.0 × 10 −7 M, with detection limits of 3.9 × 10 −12 M and 1.89 × 10 −11 M for ratiometrically electrochemical method and colorimetric assay, respectively. Such a dual-mode sensor with remarkable selectivity, reproducibility, and stability was finally applied for GLYP detection in real samples and reliable outcomes were achieved.

Abstract:Adult subjects with high-grade VEA have an increased risk of sudden death. In all likelihood, the risk reflects a predisposition to VF with concomitant but possibly independently caused VEA. Among patients sustaining acute myocardial infarction, the severity of VEA late after infarction appears to depend primarily on the extent of underlying coronary artery disease and the extent of tissue damage sustained, as does the likelihood of sudden death. It is not yet clear whether suppression of one manifestation of severe coronary artery disease, namely VEA, confers protection against more serious manifestations - particularly sudden death. Although increased mortality among patients with and without overt coronary artery disease is associated with high-grade VEA and although the absolute frequency of PVCs is strongly correlated with severity defined with conventional classification schemes, frequent, unifocal PVCs in the absence of high-grade VEA appear to carry only a small associated risk of sudden death [56]. Furthermore, even though early PVCs may be particularly hazardous soon after the onset of acute myocardial infarction, they do not appear to be malignant during the hospital phase or among ambulatory patients with or without coronary artery disease. The temptation to suppress even low-grade VEA is strong because even a single PVC can initiate VF in the ischemic heart, and it is of course possible that suppression could prevent a single PVC from occurring after the onset of ischemia and initiating VF. However, suppression of PVCs, even if successful in an ambulatory patient, will not necessarily suppress VEA initiated by a new bout of ischemia. Accordingly, based on currently available information, low-grade VEA does not require treatment in our view in ambulatory patients without specific indications.

Abstract:An ultra-sensitive glyphosate nanosensor, based on carbon dots (CDs), was successfully developed with excellent long-wavelength emission (530 nm), a high quantum yield (41.3%), and an impressive detection limit (0.8 ng·mL−1). This is the lowest value for glyphosate detection achieved by CD-based fluorescence analysis. The sensor was derived from a separate precursor, 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone, and was based on the “off-on” fluorescence analysis, where Cu2+ acts as a dynamic quencher and glyphosate as a fluorescence restorer (excitation wavelength 460 nm). Trace detection of glyphosate is possible with a wide detection range of 50–1300 ng·mL−1 and spiked recoveries between 93.3 and 110.0%. Exploration in depth confirmed that (1) the fluorescence of CDs was derived from the carbon core, (2) the large sp2 conjugated domain consisting of graphitic carbon and nitrogen contributed to the long-wavelength emission, and (3) CDs had an impressive binding interaction with Cu2+, which endow high sensitivity to glyphosate detection. The nanosensor has also be used as a dual-mode visual sensor and a smart sensing membrane that can identify glyphosate on the surface of vegetables, thus showing good practical applicability.Graphical abstractSynthetic methods of G-CDs and its detection mechanisms for glyphosate.

Abstract:Glyphosate is a widely used broad-spectrum herbicide in agriculture and horticulture to control a variety of weeds and undesirable plants. However, the excessive use of glyphosate has raised a number of environmental and human health concerns. It is urgent to develop tools to detect of glyphosate. Herein, a novel dual-signal probe CCU-Cu2+ was designed which synthesized on the basis of CCU. CCU exhibited excellent selectivity and great sensitivity for Cu2+ which were based on both fluorescence "turn–off" reaction and comparative color visualisation methods. By the strong chelating ability of glyphosate on Cu2+, the CCU-Cu2+ complex was applied to glyphosate detection in practical samples. The experimental results in vitro showed that CCU-Cu2+ complex was highly selective, rapid, with a low detection limit (1.6 μM), and could be recognised by the naked eye in the detection of glyphosate. Based on the excellent properties of the CCU-Cu2+ complex, we also constructed a smartphone-assisted detection sensing system for glyphosate detection, which has the advantages of precision, sensitivity, and high interference immunity. Moreover, CCU-Cu2+ complex was also successfully employed for exogenous glyphosate imaging in living cells. These characteristics demonstrated that CCU-Cu2+ hold significant potential for detection and imaging of glyphosate in bio-systems.

Abstract:In this work, a label-free fluorescent detection method for glyphosate, based on DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (DNA-Ag NCs) and a Cu2+-ion-modulated strategy, was developed. In the presence of Cu2+, the fluorescence of the DNA-Ag NCs was quenched. Glyphosate can restore the fluorescence of DNA-Ag NCs. By analyzing the storage stability of the obtained DNA-Ag NCs using different DNA templates, specific DNA-Ag NCs were selected for the construction of the glyphosate sensor. The ultrasensitive detection of glyphosate was achieved by optimizing the buffer pH and Cu2+ concentration. The sensing of glyphosate demonstrated a linear response in the range of 1.0–50 ng/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.2 ng/mL. The proposed method was successfully applied in the detection of glyphosate in a real sample, indicating its high application potential for glyphosate detection.
Smartphone-assisted sensing platform based on dual-responsive nitrogen-doped carbon dots for enzyme-free and visual quantitative detection of Cu 2+ and glyphosate

Abstract:Rapid and selective detection of copper ion (Cu 2+ ) and glyphosate (GLY) is crucial to environmental pollution control, especially when using a simple and portable device. In this study, an enzyme-free and visual fluorescence sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) is successfully designed, featuring strong blue fluorescence and excellent stability. The sensor shows a linear response to Cu 2+ over a wide detection range of 0.048 to 40 μM with a low limit of detection (LOD, 48 nM), resulting in fluorescence quenching at 435 nm. Meanwhile, the rapid enhancement in fluorescence intensity of the quenched N-CDs/Cu 2+ system can be triggered by GLY owing to the strong complexation between Cu 2+ and GLY, with a LOD of GLY as low as 0.24 μM. Furthermore, we develop a smartphone-assisted sensing platform using N-CDs/polyvinyl alcohol films, which captures and analyzes fluorescence images to detect Cu 2+ and GLY with sensitive LODs of 73 nM and 0.32 μM, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries, ranging from 94.0 % to 104.6 %, are achieved in real sample detection, implying the potential application in the field of enzyme-free and on-site pesticides detection.

Abstract:A 68-year old male patients without personal or family history of diabetes mellitus developed diabetic lipaemia with severe hyponatraemia and became deeply comatose. The low blood sodium level (110 mmol/l) was consecutive to hyperglycaemia (45 mmol/l), hyperlipaemia (65 g/l) and true sodium depletion. This rare form of type V hyperlipidaemia is attributed to deficiency of heparin-activated lipoprotein lipase; it rapidly responds to insulin therapy. Hyponatraemia is a prominent feature of the syndrome, but it is partly due to blood dilution resulting from hyperglycaemia and therefore fictitious. A fluorescence visual detection for glyphosine based on biomass carbon quantum dots paper-based sensor

Abstract:Pesticide residues was a serious problem towards agriculture, environment and food safety, so it was highly desirable to develop a swift, efficient and portable pesticide detection method. A fluorescence visual sensing method for glyphosine based on nitrogen-doped biomass carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) paper-based sensor was raised, which were quenched by Fe3+ and this was a static quenching process, then the fluorescence of N-CQDs recovered after adding glyphosine. Under the optimal experiment conditions and tested with fluorescent spectrofluorometer, detecting glyphosine showed two-stage linear pattern in the range of 0.1-0.6 μM and 0.6-1.6 μM with 0.075 μM detection limit. Then the RGB values of different concentrations of glyphosine on the filter paper chip were detected by the software of the smartphone-color identifier. The logarithm of the glyphosine concentration was linearly related to the G value of RGB in the range of 0.25-10.00 mM and with 0.15 mM detection limit. The method was applied to measuring glyphosine-spiked juice and flour samples, and the recovery rates were 87.60 %-112.69 % and 93.27 %-105.83 %, respectively. The proposed N-CQDs/Fe3+ system had wide applications and was expected to be fast and effective at detecting pesticide residues.

Abstract:A novel sulfate-loaded iron-nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (SO42–-CQDs)-based fluorescent method was synthesized by the facile and environmentally friendly pyrolysis of persimmon frost (carbon source) and (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2·6H2O. After SMMC-7721 cells were incubated with the SO42–-CQDs for 24 h, more than 95% of the cells remained viable, even at a high concentration of the SO42–-CQDs, indicating excellent biocompatibility and low toxicity. In addition, it was able to be taken up by the cells to emit their bright blue fluorescence after excitation at 365 nm, indicating suitable cell permeability. The SO42–-CQDs also exhibited a unique response to changes in pH, which was applied in the detection of OPs by relying on the production of acetic acid from the hydrolysis of acetylcholine (ACh) by acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which decreased the pH and engendered an increase in the fluorescence of the SO42–-CQDs; however, the inhibition of AChE by glyphosate resulted in little influence on fluorescence intensity due to the lack of acetic acid produced. This mechanism was the basis for the development of a sensitive assay for the detection of glyphosate. The resulting assay had a limit of detection of 0.066 ng/mL. Furthermore, the method was successfully applied for the precise and accurate monitoring of the concentration, distribution, and variation of glyphosate residues in chives and cultivated soil. Therefore, the proposed method was anticipated to provide a promising alternative for other detection methods to enable the reliable analysis of OPs in food products.

Abstract:The control of pesticide residues in food is of increasing importance nowadays due to the over-use and misapplication of herbicides in agricultural production. However, the current colorimetric method for rapid detection of glyphosate still faces many challenges like the low sensitivity and stability. Herein, a simple and ultrasensitive liquid colorimetric chemosensor for glyphosate detection was successfully constructed. Glyphosate pesticide can interact with metallic oxidelike porous Co3O4 nanodisc, and inhibit its inherent peroxidase-mimicking activity, making the colour of the solution change from blue to light blue or even colourless. The colour variation of the colorimetric chemosensor enables us to easily distinguish in less than 20 min even by the naked eye whether glyphosate exceeds the allowable level. The limit of detection (LOD) of the chemosensor for glyphosate was calculated as low as 2.37 μg·L-1, and the chemosensor displays excellent selectivity against other competitive pesticides and metal ions. Further studies have also validated the applicability of the colorimetric chemosensor in actual samples like tomato, cucumber and cabbage, indicating that the proposed strategy may have promising application prospects for detecting glyphosate residues in agricultural products.
Sensitive, specific, smartphone-based quantitative sensing of glyphosate by integrating analyte-triggered anti-aggregation/anti-autocatalysis of metal nanoparticles with Tyndall-effect colorimetric signaling

Abstract:This work initially describes a new class of pesticide nanosensor for highly sensitive, equipment-free detection of glyphosate as a model analyte by using Tyndall effect (TE) for colorimetric signaling. In the absence of analyte, o -phenylenediamine (OPD) can be oxidized by bivalent copper (Cu 2+ ) ions into 2, 3-diaminophenazine (OPDox), from which copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) are also formed to further act as nanocatalysts for catalyzing the above redox reactions. The resultant large number of positively-charged OPDox products can make citrate-capped gold NPs (AuNPs) aggregate via N–Au chemistry and electrostatic forces. With a 635-nm laser pointer pen, both the CuNPs and aggregated AuNPs can efficiently scatter its red light beam, leading to a significantly-enhanced TE response (compared with the dispersed AuNPs). For the glyphosate sample, however, only a weak TE signal can be recorded, because the analyte can chelate with the Cu 2+ ions to inhibit the OPDox production, the generation/antocatalysis of CuNPs, and the OPDox-induced AuNPs' aggregation. The glyphosate level is inversely proportional to the TE signal which can be measured by a smartphone for quantitative analysis. The results show that the developed nanosensor enables instrument-free detection of glyphosate with a limit down to 117 nM. To the best of our knowledge, this may be the first report of designing enhanced TE-based colorimetric nanosensors with two types of colloidal nanoparticles for potential on-site detection of pesticide residue in various fields like food safety and environmental monitoring.
