Lane, Rice University, Texas Nanomaterials inevitably have bright prospects, but even now they play an important role in many areas of industry. Some of these new materials are commercially available and are used in off the shelf products, others are important model systems for physicochemical and materials science research. However, research findings and application data are not compiled in a single work. The Springer Handbook of Nanomaterials collects description and data of materials which have dimensions on the nanoscale. The description of nanomaterials follows the interplay of structure, properties, processing and applications mainly in their solid phase. The chapters were arranged according to the classical materials-science classifications: carbon materials, metals, ceramics, composites, and biomaterials. Abstract:Nanotechnology is the innovatory technology of the twenty-first century, and nanoscale materials have created a considerable amount of attention from researchers. It is an emerging interdisciplinary area of research wherever groupings of atoms as well as molecules are handled at the nanometer levels. It can be defined as the systematic study of materials that have properties critically dependent on length scales on the order of nanometers. Such novel and improved properties make nanoscale materials promising candidates to provide the best scientific as well as technological progress in a number of fields in particular communications, electronics, energy, environment, information, biology, pharmacy, health care, and medical care. This chapter first draws attention to the different definitions and classification of nanomaterials based on their origin, chemical composition, materials, and their dimensions. The fi rst chapter explains the importance of studying NWs, the physical concepts related to their formation, and some historical results on their synthesis. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis methods in a more systematic way, grouping them into vapor-phase growth-based methods, templated methods, and solution-based methods. Chapter 3 describes the physical properties of NWs and how to predict and control them. Their morphological or chemical characteristics are illustrated, and more complex structures, such as branched or kinked structures, are explained. Chapter 4 covers the possibility of assembling the grown NWs onto substrates by using microfl uidic channels, Langmuir–Blodgett processes, or the blown bubble method, exploiting chemical interactions. Abstract:Nanomaterials are materials with one or more nanoscale dimensions (internal or external) (i.e., 1 to 100 nm). The nanomaterial shape, size, porosity, surface chemistry, and composition are controlled at the nanoscale, and this offers interesting properties compared with bulk materials. This review describes how nanomaterials are classified, their fabrication, functionalization techniques, and growth-controlled mechanisms. First, the history of nanomaterials is summarized and then the different classification methods, based on their dimensionality (0–3D), composition (carbon, inorganic, organic, and hybrids), origin (natural, incidental, engineered, bioinspired), crystal phase (single phase, multiphase), and dispersion state (dispersed or aggregated), are presented. Then, the synthesis methods are discussed and classified in function of the starting material (bottom-up and top-down), reaction phase (gas, plasma, liquid, and solid), and nature of the dispersing forces (mechanical, physical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological). Finally, the challenges in synthesizing nanomaterials for research and commercial use are highlighted.

Abstract:Science and technique of nanoscale materials have been interested in the important potential applications, such as electricity, optics, chemistry industry, ceramic, medicine and so on. A basic concept and outline to some nano-technology and a variety of preparations and structure characterizations of the nano-scale materials are reviewed in this paper. The concept and nano-technology include molecular cognition, molecular self-assembly, relation of the absorbent/substrate, molecular manipulation and architecture of molecular device, such as, self-directed growth of molecular nanostructure on silicon, selection of peptides with semiconductor binding specificity for directed nano-crystal assembly, hybrid organic-inorganic device(powering an inorganic nanodevice with a biomolecular moter), light-driven microfabrication assembly of multi-component, 3D structure by using optical tweezers and a DNA-fulled molecular machine made of DNA. These synthetic methods including MBE(molecular beam epitaxy), CVD(chemical vapor deposition), liquid phase deposition, Sol-Gel process, LB(Langmuir-Blodgett) film technology, self-assembly single-molecular layer approaches, hydrothermal and solvenothermal methods, spray deposition, STM/AFM (scanning tunneling microscopy/atomic force microscopy) and so on, are described. Some structure characterization methods of these nanoscale materials including XRD(X-ray diffraction), EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure), XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), IRS(infrared spectroscopy), Raman Spectroscopy, STM(scanning tunneling microscopy) and OMS(organic mass spectroscopy) are elucidated.
