Abstract:An interface-strengthened cross-linked graphene oxide/Nafion212 (CLGO/Nafion212) composite membrane was successfully fabricated and served as ion conducting membrane for vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). Firstly, the surface of Nafion212 was endowed with plenty of amino groups via in situ sol-gel chemistry approach of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. Subsequently, a thin layer of m-xylylenediamino-crosslinked GO was formed using the spin-coating method. The composite membrane demonstrated much lower vanadium ion permeability (0.30x10(-6) cm(2) min(-1)) than pristine Nafion212 (1.88x10(-6) cm(2) min(-1)), mainly due to the presence of a cross-linked GO layer with angstrom-scale channels. The cell assembled with CLGO/Nafion212 exhibited enhanced coulombic efficiencies (CEs, 93.0-97.2% vs. 68.0-91.6%) and energy efficiencies (EEs, 88.9-85.2% vs. 65.7-82.2%) compared with the one with Nafion212 at 20-100 mA cm(-2). At a constant current density of 80 mA cm(-2), the long-term cycling tests showed that the discharge capacity fading of the flow cell equipped with CLGO/Nafion212 reached 0.25% per cycle, which was much smaller than that of Nafion212 (0.47% per cycle). The above findings proved that the cell equipped with CLGO/Nafion212 displayed superior electro-chemical performances than that with Nafion212, therefore CLGO/Nafion212 composite membrane showed a great potential in VFBs.
Functionalized graphene nanofiber-based low-cost composite membrane for vanadium redox flow battery applications

Abstract:Nafion has gained widespread recognition as the predominant membrane due to its good proton conductivity, robust chemical resistance, and commendable mechanical stability. However, due to its well-developed water channels, it has poor barrier properties toward vanadium ions. Herein, to reduce vanadium ions permeability across the membranes without compromising the proton conductivity, graphene nanofiber (Herringbone type, GNF-H) as a filler has been incorporated into the Nafion matrix to fabricate the composite membrane. The membranes were subjected to physiochemical characterization, vanadium ion permeability, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic charge-discharge at different current densities. Vanadium permeability has significantly reduced in the 0.75% and 1% GNF-H composite membranes. Composite membranes (0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% GNF-H) showed a capacity of ~18.2, ~18.9, and ~16.8 Ah L −1 at 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, whereas Nafion TM 117 exhibited only ~16.3 Ah L −1 capacity at the same current density. The peak power of the cells consisted of 0.5, 0.75, and 1% GNF-H composite membrane and Nafion TM 117 is ~538, ~507, ~465 and 388 mW cm −2 , respectively. The present study concludes that applying Nafion/GNF-H in the VRFB system can be a promising strategy to reduce the vanadium ion permeation, cost-cutting and improve the VRFB performance.

Abstract:Here we report an eco-friendly Nafion/lignin composite membrane with excellent performance for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Through facile solution casting, the Nafion/lignin composite membrane presents the merits of high conductivity and low vanadium ions permeability. Under high current density (120 mA cm−2), the VRFB single cell with the optimized Nafion/lignin composite membrane exhibits superior performance metrics to commercial counterpart: high Coulombic efficiency (~97.4%) and energy efficiency (~82.7%), and prominent cyclability with slower capacity decay for ~52.8% capacity retention after 1000 cycles (vs. Nafion 212 membrane ~34.8% after only 150 cycles). More importantly, compared with the pristine Nafion 212 membrane, the cost of the composite membrane is reduced sharply by reducing the usage amount of Nafion polymer, while maintaining the membrane stability. Thus, the Nafion/lignin composite membrane is one of the competitive candidates for VRFB towards commercialization.

Surface-Modified Approach to Fabricate Nafion Membranes Covalently Bonded with Polyhedral Oligosilsesquioxane for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

Abstract:An aminopropyl isobutyl polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane (NH2-POSS) surface-modified Nafion membrane has been designed by chemical grafting for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). NH2-POSS is a cage-like macromer consisting of an inorganic Si8O12 core surrounded by seven inert isobutyl groups and one active aminopropyl group. The sulfonic acid groups on the surface of Nafion can be activated by 1,1-carbonyldiimidazole for further modification with NH2-POSS. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) prove that NH2-POSS has been successfully grafted on the surface of a Nafion 115 membrane. Although the proton conductivity decreases slightly, the organic-inorganic hybrid membranes display enhanced ion selectivity and excellent dimensional stability with lower water uptake and swelling ratio than Nafion 115. Moreover, two-dimensional-grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (2D-GIXRD) reveals that the introduction of NH2-POSS forms a POSS layer on the surface of the membrane and narrows the space of Nafion clusters, which helps to block VO2+ permeation. A VRFB with the surface-modified Nafion membrane displays an outstanding performance with an average Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.7% and energy efficiency (EE) of 84.5% at a current density of 80 mA cm-2, superior to those of the Nafion 115 membrane (CE = 95.7%, EE = 81.7%). Furthermore, the cell holds a high capacity retention of 49.2% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles, in contrast to that of 41.9% for the cell with Nafion 115 after only 200 cycles. The results suggest that the surface-modified hybrid membrane is a promising strategy to overcome the vanadium ion crossover in VRFBs.

Abstract:The application of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) has encountered challenges because the most commonly used commercial membrane (perfluorinated sulfonic acid, PFSA) has severe vanadium ion permeation, which yields poor stability of the battery. Herein, a PFSA‐based hybrid membrane with a sandwich structure created using a reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene thin layer with hydrophilic nanohybrid fillers is developed. The tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanoparticles are in situ grown on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets to overcome the electrostatic effect, and to enhance the hydrophilicity and dispersibility of GO nanosheets, which is embedded in the PFSA matrix to act as a “barrier” to reduce vanadium ions permeation. In addition, these hydrophilic WO3 nanoparticles on GO nanosheets surface serve as proton active sites to facilitate proton transportation. As a result, at 120 cm−2, the cell of the hybrid membrane displays high Coulombic efficiency (over 98.1%) and high energy efficiency (up to 88.9%), better than the commercial Nafion 212 membrane at the same condition. These performances indicate the proposed hybrid membrane is applicable for VRFB application. Also, this design method of the membrane can be extended to other fields including water treatments and fuel cells. A perfluorinated sulfonic acid‐based hybrid membrane is prepared with tungsten trioxide@graphene oxide (GO) nanohybrids and a polytetrafluoroethylene reinforced‐layer. The nanohybrids block vanadium ions permeation effectively. The nanoparticles on the surface of GO nanosheets provide more paths for protons transportation. The vanadium redox flow battery of the hybrid membrane displays excellent energy efficiency and good cyclicity.

Abstract:Tertiary amino-modified graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet (named as TAGO) was successfully synthesized by gamma-ray radiation-induced grafting of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate onto the surface of GO. Then, a novel Nafion-TAGO composite membrane was prepared by solution casting method and TAGO could be dispersed uniformly in the Nafion due to a good compatibility with the Nafion matrix. In the composite membrane, acid-base pairs were formed through hydrogen-bond network among the tertiary amino groups, the carboxylic acid groups and hydroxyl groups in TAGO and/or sulfonic acid groups in Nafion, respectively. Owing to the acid-base pair interactions (such as –SO3H … -N(CH3)2), the ionic channels for proton transport could be provided in the composite membrane. As a result, the Nafion-TAGO composite membrane exhibited excellent thermal stability, high proton conductivity, low VO2+ permeability and high ion selectivity. Therefore, the TAGO is a good candidate for the performance improvement of Nafion used in vanadium redox flow battery.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising technology for grid scale stationary energy storage to complement renewable energy systems. These batteries have a relatively low energy density; however, they offer important advantages, including: long life-time; decoupled energy (arbitrarily large electrolyte volume) and power (electrode area); high round-trip efficiency; scalability and design flexibility; fast response; and low environmental impacts. These advantages make them superior to many energy storage technologies for stationary applications [1-4]. Among the various types of RFBs, vanadium RFBs (VRFBs) are an emerging technology for grid scale energy storage and the integration of renewable energy generation [5]. The membrane is a key component of a VRFB that separates the two half-cell electrolytes and prevents cross-mixing, while allowing the transport of ions during charge-discharge cycles [6]. The VRFB membrane should exhibit low vanadium ion permeability to minimize self-discharge, low cost, and long‐term chemical stability under normal operating conditions. A high proton conductivity and low vanadium ion crossover are known to improve the efficiency of VRFBs [6-7]. In this study, we present a novel composite Nafion based membrane that results in a significant increase in the VRFB performance. The composite membrane has been characterized for its chemical, structural, and thermal properties using appropriate analytical techniques. The battery performance was evaluated in a flow cell using a 'zero-gap' design with an electrode area of 5 cm 2 . The electrolytic solution, 1.6 M VOSO 4 in 3 M H 2 SO 4 , was circulated through the cell. Thermally treated carbon papers were used as the cathode and anode electrodes. For charge-discharge experiments, a constant current density (10 to 80 mA cm −2 ) was applied with upper and lower voltage cut-offs of 1.65 and 0.8 V, respectively. The stability of the battery using the composite membrane was evaluated over 100 cycles. Figures 1 and 2 show the energy efficiency and capacity retention during 100 charge-discharge cycles. The results reveal that the energy efficiency was improved from 51% to 63% by using the composite membrane. In addition, the charge-discharge capacity and capacity retention improved by around 200% and 25%, respectively. Abstract:Nafion/organic silica hybrid membrane was prepared via an in situ sot-gel reaction method and the ion exchange capacity (IEC), conductivity and water transport rate of the hybrid membrane were measured. Results indicate that compared with Nafion membrane, the hybrid membrane can efficiently block water transfer across the membrane. The average coulombic efficiency and energy efficiency of the VRB with the Nafion/organic silica membrane were all remarkably increased. Furthermore, the Nafion/organic silica 2 hybrid membrane is very stable for more than 80 charge-discharge cycles at current density of 60 mA.cm(-2). Results show that the Nafion/organic silica membrane is a novel hybrid membrane and applicable to VRB.
Advanced Nafion hybrid membranes with fast proton transport channels toward high-performance vanadium redox flow battery

Abstract:The development of high-performance ion exchange membranes to break the trade-off between ion selectivity and conductivity is always a great challenge for the vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Herein, a hybrid membrane was successfully prepared via the solution casting method. The UiO-66-SO3H was embedded in Nafion matrix, acting as an effective barrier for vanadium ions to realize enhanced ion selectivity. At the same time, besides the intrinsic proton cluster channels in Nafion, two types of additional proton transport channels formed in the membranes, which further improved the conductivity of the membranes. Consequently, the VRFB with an optimized hybrid membrane exhibited enhanced voltage efficiency (VEs: 91.5-78.4%) and outstanding energy efficiency (EEs: 86.0-76.1%) compared with the one with recasting Nafion membrane (rNf) (VEs: 86.9-69.0%, EEs: 80.3-66.0%) at 80–220 mA cm-2. The efficiency kept stable for 1000 cycles in the long-term cycling tests, and the discharge capacity decay rate of the VRFB with the hybrid membrane is only 0.13% per cycle, which is in obvious contrast to the one with rNf (0.73% per cycle). In addition, the electrolyte utilization rate of the VRFB assembled with the hybrid membrane was much higher than that of the one with rNf.

Abstract:To improve the selectivity of Nafion membrane, reduce the crossover of vanadium ions and decrease water transfer across the membranes used in VRB systems, the sol–gel method was employed to obtain a composite membrane of Nafion/organic silica modified TiO2 (Nafion/Si/Ti hybrid membrane). The preparation technique and characteristics of the composite membrane were described. The water transfer and the permeability of vanadium ions were also measured. Results showed that crossover of vanadium ions and water transfer across the membrane for the composite membrane have a remarkable decrease comparing with the unmodified Nafion membrane. It has been confirmed by EDX and FT-IR analysis of the modified membrane that the Si and Ti elements distributed uniformly in the prepared membrane. As a result, the coulombic efficiency of the VRB single cell with modified Nafion membrane was higher than that of the VRB single cell with pristine Nafion membrane. The ion exchange capacity (IEC), the area resistance and the water uptake of the composite membrane were also evaluated. Furthermore, the open circuit voltage (OCV) of the VRB with modified and unmodified Nafion membrane has been carried out and cycle performance of the VRB with modified membrane proves that it has high stability in strong acid condition.
Performance of a vanadium redox flow battery with a VANADion membrane

Abstract:Conventional vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) using Nafion 115 suffered from issues associated with high ohmic resistance and high capital cost. In this work, we report a commercial membrane (VANADion), consisting of a porous layer and a dense Nafion layer, as a promising alternative to Nafion 115. In the dual-layer structure, the porous layer (∼210μm) can offer a high ionic conductivity and the dense Nafion layer (∼20μm) can depress the convective flow of electrolyte through the membrane. By comparing with the conventional Nafion 115 in a VRFB, it is found that the change from the conventional Nafion 115 to the composite one results in an increase in the energy efficiency from 71.3% to 76.2% and an increase in the electrolyte utilization from 54.1% to 68.4% at a current density of as high as 240mAcm−2. In addition, although two batteries show the comparable cycling performance at current densities ranging from 80mAcm−2 to 240mAcm−2, the composite membrane is estimated to be significantly cheaper than the conventional Nafion 115 due to the fact that the porous layer is rather cost-effective and the dense Nafion layer is rather thin. The impressive combination of desirable performance and low cost makes this composite membrane highly promising in the VRFB applications.

Free-Standing Cof Nanofiber in Ion Conductive Membrane to Improve Efficiency of Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

Abstract:The ion sieving effect of the porous two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) was greatly restricted by the brittleness and easy agglomeration of COFs in ion conductive membranes. Herein, the strategy of free-standing COF nanofiber as continuous ion conductive pathways is proposed to maximize the selective ion conduction of COFs. The free-standing TFP-TAPA electrospun COF nanofiber mat was fabricated by an in-situ growth-template etching method, densified with sulfonated polybenzimidazole (SPBI) and continuously dispersed in the membrane. Fibrillization gives rigid COF materials excellent flexibility to be freely bent, induces the orientated aggregation of sulfonic acid groups via hydrogen bonding for proton hopping, as well as the long-range vanadium ions repelling barrier via the sieving pores (6 & Aring;) and Donnan effect of the imine groups in COF. The TFP-TAPA COF nanofiber continuous membrane shows 3 folds of H+/Vn+ selectivity over Nafion212, achieves excellent VRFB energy efficiency of about 80.5 % at 200 mA cm-2, which surpasses most state-of-the-art COFs based ion conductive membranes for VRFBs.
Nafion/SiO2 Hybrid Membrane for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

Abstract:Sol–gel derived Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane is prepared and employed as the separator for vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) to evaluate the vanadium ions permeability and cell performance. Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane shows nearly the same ion exchange capacity (IEC) and proton conductivity as pristine Nafion 117 membrane. ICP-AES analysis reveals that Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane exhibits dramatically lower vanadium ions permeability compared with Nafion membrane. The VRB with Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane presents a higher coulombic and energy efficiencies over the entire range of current densities (10–80 mA cm−2), especially at relative lower current densities (<30 mA cm−2), and a lower self-discharge rate compared with the Nafion system. The performance of VRB with Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane can be maintained after more than 100 cycles at a charge–discharge current density of 60 mA cm−2. The experimental results suggest that the Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane approach is a promising strategy to overcome the vanadium ions crossover in VRB.

Abstract:Abstract Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) is an energy storage flow battery in whichthe key material for VRFB is the membrane that determines the cost and performance of the battery. Porous membranes have shown a great potential as a membrane due to their high stability, cheap and high selectivity. Poly(vinylidine fluoride) (PVDF) is a type of porous membrane that was extensively studied as a potential material for surface modification due to its thermal and chemical stability, inexpensive and mechanical properties. This study aims to develop a highly selective, high-performance modified PVDF membrane using surface grafting and functionalization for VRFB application using the sonication method. Graphene oxide (GO) is a trending material in the field due to its excellent properties such as being highly resistant to alkaline/acidic and strong mechanical strength, low cost and easily accessible. In this work, GO was functionalized on both sides of grafted PVDF using the sonication technique. Hydrogen bond from modification with GO caused the membrane to be a hydrophilic and FTIR results proved that new peaks appeared which relates to carbon bond from GO. Proton conductivity of modified membrane is recorded higher than commercial VRFB membrane, Nafion.
Nafion/organically modified silicate hybrids membrane for vanadium redox flow battery

Abstract:In our previous work, Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane was prepared via in situ sol–gel method and used for the vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) system. The VRB with modified Nafion membrane has shown great advantages over that of the VRB with Nafion membrane. In this work, a novel Nafion/organically modified silicate (ORMOSIL) hybrids membrane was prepared via in situ sol–gel reactions for mixtures of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and diethoxydimethylsilane (DEDMS). The primary properties of Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane were measured and compared with Nafion and Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane. The permeability of vanadium ions through the Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane was measured using an UV–vis spectrophotometer. The results indicate that the hybrids membrane has a dramatic reduction in crossover of vanadium ions compared with Nafion membrane. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR) analysis of the hybrids membrane reveals that the ORMOSIL phase is well formed within hybrids membrane. Cell tests identify that the VRB with Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane presents a higher coulombic efficiency (CE) and energy efficiency (EE) compared with that of the VRB with Nafion and Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane. The highest EE of the VRB with Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane is 87.4% at 20mAcm−2, while the EE of VRB with Nafion and the EE of VRB with Nafion/SiO2 hybrid membrane are only 73.8% and 79.9% at the same current density. The CE and EE of VRB with Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane is nearly no decay after cycling more than 100 times (60mAcm−2), which proves the Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane possesses high chemical stability during long charge–discharge process under strong acid solutions. The self-discharge rate of the VRB with Nafion/ORMOSIL hybrids membrane is the slowest among the VRB with Nafion, Nafion/SiO2 and Nafion/ORMOSIL membrane, which further proves the excellent vanadium ions blocking characteristic of the prepared hybrids membrane.

Abstract:The crossover of vanadium ions through proton-exchange membranes such as those of Nafion is the chief reason that results in the low energy efficiency and high self-discharge rate of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRB). With respect to applicability, the ideal proton-exchange membrane used in VRB should possess simultaneously high proton conductivity and low vanadium ion permeability. Here, we report a novel approach using a polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer self-assembly technique to fabricate a barrier layer onto the surface of Nafion membrane by alternate adsorption of polycation poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyanion poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSS), which can suppress the crossover of vanadium ions. The Nafion-[PDDA-PSS](n) membrane (n the number of multilayers) obtained shows much lower vanadium ion permeability compared with plain Nafion membrane. Accordingly, the VRB with Nafion-[PDDA-PSS](n) membrane exhibits a higher coulombic efficiency (CE) and energy efficiency (EE) together with a slower self-discharge rate than that of Nafion system. The highest CE of 97.6% and EE of 83.9% can be achieved at charge-discharge current density of 80 mA cm(-2) and 20 mA cm(-2), respectively.

Abstract:A carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced Nafion membrane (CNT/N) with reduced interfacial resistance was prepared and served as a promising ion exchange membrane for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). The reinforcement of CNT effectively enhanced the tensile properties of Nafion membranes. The electrochemical properties of CNT/N membrane were analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and fitted with an analytical model to investigate the ionic and interfacial resistances. The EIS measurement reveals that the exposed CNT on the composite membrane surface significantly reduced the interfacial resistance of the membrane. The VRFB single cell performance of the CNT/N shows higher voltage efficiency (93% vs 89%) and energy efficiency (86% vs 83%) than recast Nafion at a current density of 40 mA cm−2. The cycling stability measurement showed that the discharge capacity retention of the VRFB cell equipped with CNT/N was greatly enhanced. The results suggest that the incorporation of CNT in ion exchange membrane is an effective approach for achieving lower membrane bulky and interfacial resistance, and thus, improving capacity retention, voltage, and energy efficiency.
