Abstract:A family of novel ionic liquids with amino acids and their derivatives as cations and environmentally benign materials as anions have been synthesized using easy preparation techniques. The ionic liquids obtained have the same characteristics as conventional imidazolium ionic liquids and the same chiralities as natural amino acids. Thermal stabilities, phase behaviour, viscosities and miscibilities of the representative family members have been investigated, generally showing no difference from conventional ionic liquids. These amino acid ionic liquids may be used as catalysts and "fully green'' solvents in the cycloaddition of cyclopentadiene to methyl acrylate, which is a typical Diels-Alder reaction. This approach to treating amino acids and their derivatives can serve as an alternative to traditional ionic liquids having synthetic chemical components.

Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.

Abstract:Two novel ionic liquids, N,N'-disalicylideneethylenediaminium acetate and N,N'-disalicylideneethylenediaminium trifluoroacetate, were prepared and characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, DTA-TG and elemental analysis. The experimental results indicate that the new ionic liquids possess lower melting point and higher electrical conductivity. It is noteworthy that the ionic liquids reported herein are the first member of the ionic liquid family with the Schiff base functional group in the cation.

Abstract:A novel category of salts based on diacetone acrylamide cation (DA(+)) and the anions such as acetate (Ac-), trifluoroacetate (TF-), tetrafluoroborate (BF-), hexafluorophosphate (PF-), sulfate (SO-) and chloride (Cl-) were synthesized by usual neutralization of acids and bases at room temperature and characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis (EA). The results show that these compounds possess the characteristic of ionic liquids. In addition, four of them, DABF, DACl, DASO and DAPF, were efficient catalysts for esterication of acetic acid with C-1-C-6 alcohols and octanol.

These results demonstrated superior performance of ionic liquids in synthesizing aerogels, nanocomposite materials, and liquid membranes. We expect that these new materials may find applications in areas such as separation, catalysis, and sensors.

Abstract:New ionic liquids (ILs) are continuously introduced involving an increasing number of organic and inorganic ions. Amino acid based ILs (AAILs) represent a specific interest due to their natural origin and, allegedly, low cost. We apply our recently developed force field for imidazolium-based AAILs to investigate structure properties in their aqueous solutions via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. By reporting cluster analysis, radial distribution functions and spatial distribution functions, we argue that AAIL ions are well dispersed in the aqueous media, irrespective of the AAIL content. Aqueous solutions of AAILs exhibit desirable properties as solvents for chemical engineering. The AAILs in relatively dilute aqueous solutions (10 mol% AAIL) exist as ion pairs, while more concentrated solutions feature certain amount of larger ionic aggregates.

Abstract:A new family of positively charged and water soluble amino acid-based poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) consisting of nontoxic L-arginine, diols, and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids building blocks was synthesized and characterized. The L-arginine based PEAs (Arg-PEAs) were prepared by a solution polycondensation of two monomers: tetra-p-toluenesulfonic acids salts or hydrochloride acid salts of bis-(L-arginine) alpha, omega-alkylene diesters (monomer II), and di-p-nitrophenyl esters of saturated or unsaturated dicarboxylic acids (monomer I). Optimal reaction conditions were studied as functions of type of solvents and acid acceptors, concentrations of reactants. The molecular weights (Mn and Mw) of Arg-PEAs measured by GPC ranged from 20,000 to 60,000 g mol-1 with a rather narrow molecular weight distribution below 1.5. The chemical structures were confirmed by IR and NMR spectra. Arg-PEAs obtained were all amorphous materials with Tg from 33 to 125 degrees C, depending on the number and the type (saturated vs. unsaturated) of methylene groups in diols or diacids, and the type of counter-ions attached to the guanidine group of the Arg-based PEAs. The Arg-PEAs had a high solubility in all polar solvents, including water. Preliminary studies of cell morphology and DNA capture capability of Arg-PEAs indicated that this new family of cationic PEAs was nontoxic and more biocompatible than a commercial transfection agent (Superfect (R)), and can successfully capture plasma DNA. The strong positive charge of Arg-PEAs as well as their good water solubility could provide unique characteristics for potential gene transfection or other charge preferred biomedical applications. Abstract:We present a computational analysis of the complex proton-transfer processes in two protic ionic liquids based on phosphorylated amino acid anions. The structure and the short time dynamics have been analyzed via ab initio and semi-empirical molecular dynamics. Given the presence of mobile protons on the side chain, such ionic liquids may represent a viable prototype of highly conductive ionic mediums. The results of our simulations are not entirely satisfactory in this respect. Our results indicate that conduction in these liquids may be limited due to a quick quenching of the proton-transfer processes. In particular, we have found that, while proton migration does occur on very short timescales, the amino groups act as proton scavengers preventing an efficient proton migration. Despite their limits as conductive mediums, we show that these ionic liquids possess an unconventional microscopic structure, where the anionic component is made by amino acid anions that the aforementioned proton transfer has transformed into zwitterionic isomers. This unusual chemical structure is relevant because of the recent use of amino acid-based ionic liquids, such as CO<sub>2</sub> absorbent.

Abstract:A novel ionic liquid that consists of p-butylbenzenediazonium ions and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amidates (Tf2N-) has been synthesized as a task-specific ionic liquid for the solvent-free modification of carbon materials. The use of anions Tf2N- is the key to rendering the hydrophobicity, low liquidus temperature, and ionicity to this novel molten salt. This diazonium salt has a melting point of 7.2 degrees C and a moderate electric conductivity of 527 mu s/cm at 25 degrees C. The thermal stability of this diazonium ionic liquid has been investigated by high-resolution thermogravimetric analysis (HRTGA). The compound is stable up to about 90 degrees C in nitrogen, which is only 10 degrees C less than its solid tetrafluoroborate counterpart. The modification of carbon materials has been carried out through both thermal and electrochemical activations of diazonium ions to generate free radical intermediates without the use of any solvent. The surface-coverage loadings of 3.38 mu mol/m(2) and 6.07 mu mol/m(2) for covalently attached organic functionalities have been achieved by the thermally induced functionalization and electrochemically assisted reaction, respectively. Abstract:Fifteen novel amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) were prepared by the combination of several tetraalkylammonium cations with four amino acid anions ([Gly], [L-Ala], [beta-Ala] and [Val]). The asymmetry of the tetraalkylammonium cations is shown to have a significant influence on the viscosity of the ionic liquids composed of amino acid anions, especially for the four triethylbutylammonium ([N-2224])-based ionic liquids that have viscosities of lower than 60 mPa s, with the lowest being only 29 mPa s. The low viscosity tetraalkylammonium-based AAILs are further demonstrated to improve apparently the reaction and mass transfer rates of CO2 in the ionic liquids.

Abstract:A series of cyno-group functionalized ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR and elemental analysis. The density, melting point and solubility of the ionic liquids were affected by the length of substituted group and the chemical structures of anions. The rheological properties of the ionic liquids under steady, transient and dynamic state were studied with a rheometer over a wide range of temperature and frequencies. It was found that the ionic liquids studied could be considered as Newtonian fluids. Arrhenius equation was employed to describe the relationship between the viscosity and the temperature. The viscous flow activation energy of the ionic liquids calculated was changed regularly with the length change of alkyl substituent. Under transient state condition, the shear stress and viscosity of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-(beta-propanenitrile) imidazolium hexafluorophosphate, as an example, kept constant with the change of time while the shear speed was fixed. However, a decreasing trend was observed when the temperature was increased. The dynamic rheological properties of this ionic liquid were also studied. The complex viscosity and loss modulus were also decreased with increasing temperature.
Toward New Ion Conductive Liquids via Ionic Liquids

Abstract:In the current era that it is strongly expected the SDGs would be achieved, electrolyte solutions in electrochemical devices and processes are being studied from dilute and concentrated solutions, through inorganic molten salts, deep eutectic solvents, and ionic liquids, to super-concentrated solutions. Although concepts based on empirical laws such as the Walden rule and hydrodynamics such as the Stokes rule are still useful for ionic conduction in solution, it is expected that superionic conduction-like mechanisms that are scarcely found in conventional electrolytes. Here, the authors' recent results are described based on the local structure and speciation of ionic species in solution, focusing on protons and lithium ions.

Abstract:The combination of amino acids in their deprotonated and thus anionic form with a choline cation gives origin to a new and potentially important class of organic ionic compounds. A series of such neutral ion pairs has been investigated by first principle methods. The results reveal intriguing structural motives as well as regular patterns in the charge distribution and predict a number of vibrational and optical properties that could guide the experimental investigation of these compounds. The replacement of choline with its phosphocholine analogue causes the spontaneous reciprocal neutralization of cations and anions, taking place through the transfer of a proton between the two ions. Systems of this kind, therefore, provide a wide and easily accessible playground to probe the ionic/polar transition in organic systems, while the easy transfer of H(+) among neutral and ionic species points to their potential application as proton conductors. The analysis of the ab initio data highlights similarities as well as discrepancies from the rigid-ions force-field picture and suggests directions for the improvement of empirical models.

Abstract:The length of the alkyl groups and the symmetry of the cations in tetraalkylammonium-based ionic liquids affect the physical properties and their applications.A novel class of ionic liquids based on triethylbutylammonium cation was prepared in our group.In this series,(CF3SO2)2N-[bis(trifluoromethanesufonyl)imide],PF6-,BF4-,HSO4-,SCN-and PTSA-(p-toluenesulfonic acid) were assigned to be the counter ions for the ionic liquids.The synthesis of ionic liquids started with the reaction of triethylamine and n-butyl bromide,followed by the ionic exchange using LiNTf2,KPF6,NH4BF4,(Ag2O and H2SO4),KSCN and(Ag2O and PTSA) as the reactants.Then the residue was extracted with diethyl ether for several times to get the pure product.1H NMR,thermal analysis,cone-plate viscometry,densitometer method,element analysis are applied to determine the structures and properties of these ionic liquids.It is found that these ILs have lower melting points and viscosities compared to the corresponding ionic liquids with symmetrical tetraalkyammonium cations,indicating the significant importance of the asymmetrical cation on the physical properties of the ILs.The miscibility of these ILs with some common solvents was studied,and the relationship between configuration and property of the ILs were also discussed.

Abstract:[AAE]X composed of amino acid ester cations is a sort of typically “bio-based” protic ionic liquids (PILs). They possess potential Brønsted acidity due to the active hydrogens on their cations. The Brønsted acidity of [AAE]X PILs in green solvents (water and ethanol) at room temperature was systematically studied. Various frameworks of amino acid ester cations and four anions were investigated in this work from the viewpoint of structure–property relationship. Four different ways were used to study the acidity. Acid dissociation constants (pKa) of [AAE]X determined by the OIM (overlapping indicator method) were from 7.10 to 7.73 in water and from 8.54 to 9.05 in ethanol. The pKa values determined by the PTM (potential titration method) were from 7.12 to 7.82 in water. Their Hammett acidity function (H0) values (0.05 mol·L−1) were about 4.6 in water. In addition, the pKa values obtained by the DFT (proton-transfer reactions) were from 7.11 to 7.83 in water and from 8.54 to 9.34 in ethanol, respectively. The data revealed that the cationic structures of [AAE]X had little effect and the anions had no effect on the acidity of [AAE]X. At the same time, the OIM, PTM, Hammett method and DFT method were reliable for determining the acidic strength of [AAE]X in this study.

Abstract:The amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) [C3mim][Gly] (1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium glycine) and [C4mim][Gly] (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium glycine) have been prepared by the neutralization method and characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The values of their density, surface tension and refractive index were measured at different temperatures. Since the AAILs can form strong hydrogen bonds with water, small amounts of water are difficult to remove from the AAILs by common methods. In order to eliminate the effect of the impurity as water, the standard addition method (SAM) was applied to these measurements. The values of thermal expansion coefficients, α, surface excess energy, Ea, surface excess entropy, Sa, and molar refraction, Rm, for the AAILs were determined.
