Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are organic salts of low melting points with a wide range of liquidus temperature and intrinsically useful characteristics of negligible vapour pressure, thermal stability, high ionic conductivity and a large electrochemical window. As a green recyclable alternative to traditional organic solvents, the ILs have shown promise in the liquid/liquid extraction of organics from water and metal ions from solution. and separating isomeric organic compounds, selective catalytic processes for organic chemical reactions and solar cells and other electrochemical devices. In recent years, the advantages of the ILs in inorganic nanomaterial synthetic procedures have been realized and received more and more attention. In this brief review, the latest developments regarding the use of the IL as reaction medium for inorganic nanomaterials are outlined, mainly focused on (1) the preorganized structure of the IL as template effect for porous inorganic nanomaterials and (2) the intrinsic high charge and polarizability of the IL to create electrostatic and steric stabilization for metal nanoparticles and to favor phase transfer of the nanoparticles from water to water-immiscible solvent.

In diesen Flussigkeiten konnen in Abwesenheit oder bei einem kontrollierten Anteil von Wasser sehr polare Reaktionen durchgefuhrt werden, die auf einfache Weise und bei moderaten Temperaturen zu kristallinen Nanopartikeln fuhren. Die ausgepragte Organisation dieser Losungsmittel kann fur die Herstellung selbstanordnender, hoch organisierter Hybrid-Nanostrukturen von bisher nicht bekannter Qualitat genutzt werden. Das ausergewohnliche Potenzial ionischer Flussigkeiten fur die Materialsynthese soll in diesem Kurzaufsatz von einem physikalisch-chemischen Standpunkt aus dargelegt werden.

These results demonstrated superior performance of ionic liquids in synthesizing aerogels, nanocomposite materials, and liquid membranes. We expect that these new materials may find applications in areas such as separation, catalysis, and sensors.

Abstract:The design of multifunctional ionic liquids (ILs) that integrate different attractive characteristics, such as strong hydrogen-bonding interactions, good lipophilicity, significant nanoscale organization, and low viscosity, in a molecular structure is of great importance for the application of ILs in extraction, biomass conversion, and catalysis but remains challenging. Here, we synthesized a family of novel phosphonium ILs featuring branched chain carboxylate anions with carbon number up to 18 and systematically characterized the physicochemical properties of prepared Its. The branched chain carboxylate ILs (BCC-ILs) exhibit very strong hydrogen bond basicity (beta = 1.49-1.72, 30 degrees C) and excellent lipophilicity (pi* = 0.73-0.95, 30 degrees C), and have obvious nanoscale segregation and moderate viscosity (eta = 91.8-200.5 mPa, 40 degrees C). The d value of BCC-ILs ranged from 10.5 to 15.6 angstrom when the length of alkyl chain in anions or cation rose. These nanostructured solvents can undergo self-assembly processes with typical bioactive molecules of cholesterol to form highly ordered mesoscopic structures through cooperative hydrogen-bond and van der Waals interactions, which enable unprecedented high solubility of cholesterol in BCC-ILs (molar solubilities 0.31-1.12 at 50 degrees C). Additionally, we found that n-heptane had the significant synergistic effect on the dissolution of cholesterol molecules, and the introduction of n-heptane promoted the formation of highly ordered lamellar liquid crystals in the BCC-IL/cholesterol system. The dissolving mechanism of BCC-ILs for bioactive molecules was explored by experimental studies. This work indicates that the multifunctional BCC-ILs are promising solvents for extractions, catalysis, and biomass conversion.

Abstract:Conventional synthesis of inorganic materials relies heavily on water and organic solvents. Alternatively, the synthesis of inorganic materials using, or in the presence of, ionic liquids represents a burgeoning direction in materials chemistry. Use of ionic liquids in solvent extraction and organic catalysis has been extensively studied, but their use in inorganic synthesis has just begun. Ionic liquids are a family of non-conventional molten salts that can act as templates and precursors to inorganic materials, as well as solvents. They offer many advantages, such as negligible vapor pressures, wide liquidus ranges, good thermal stability, tunable solubility for both organic and inorganic molecules, and much synthetic flexibility. In this Review, the use of ionic liquids in the preparation of several categories of inorganic and hybrid materials (i.e., metal structures, non-metal elements, silicas, organosilicas, metal oxides, metal chalcogenides, metal salts, open-framework structures, ionic liquid-functionalized materials, and supported ionic liquids) is summarized. The status quo of the research field is assessed, and some future perspectives are furnished.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs), defined as low-melting organic salts, are a novel class of compounds with unique properties and a combinatorially great chemical diversity. ILs are utilized as synthesis and dispersion media for nanoparticles as well as for surface functionalization. ILs are able to offer outstanding properties as media for the synthesis of nanoparticles. The low surface tension of many ILs leads to high nucleation rates and, in consequence, to small particles. The ILs themselves can act as an electronic as well as a steric stabilizer and depress particle growth. As highly structured liquids, ILs have a strong effect on the morphology of the particles formed. In this paper, the methods of modifying surfaces with ILs through covalent bonding, physical absorption, polymerization or sol–gel methods, metal nanoparticles in ionic liquids, and ionic liquids in catalysis, as well as the application of these modified surfaces in various fields of chemistry, have been investigated.

Abstract:Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), considered as designers' solvents, are attracting a great attention because of their possibility to be tailored based on property requirements. The ionic liquids designed and synthesized for carrying out specified task are referred as functionalized ionic liquids, which show great application potential in various processes. The efforts to produce functionalized ionic liquids, characterize them, and evaluate their properties and applications are presented in this thesis. In chapter 1 the recent developments in ionic liquid functionalization are highlighted. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis and characterization of imidazolium salts in which a nitrile group is attached to the alkyl side chain (single-armed as well as double-armed). The nitrile group was chosen as it is a promising donor to transition metals such as palladium and platinum. The physicochemical properties of these new ionic liquids are described and it is shown how the length of the alkyl unit linking the imidazolium ring and the CN group influences the melting point of the ionic liquid. The third chapter describes palladium complexation reactions with the nitrile functionalized imidazolium ionic liquids (prepared as described in Chapter 2). Their application in C-C coupling and hydrogenation reactions are described. It will be shown that the palladium complexes serve as precursors to nanoparticle catalyst reservoirs and are very efficiently stabilized by the nitrile-functionalized ionic liquids. In chapter 4, the synthesis of a series of nitrile functionalized ionic liquids based on the N-butylnitrile pyridinium cation is reported and their suitability as solvents for palladium-catalyzed biphasic Suzuki and Stille coupling reactions is demonstrated. TEM images reveal that nanoparticles are formed in situ in Stille reactions and show that the nitrile-functionalized ionic liquid exert a superior nanoparticle-stabilizing effect compared to non-functionalized ionic liquids. This allows excellent catalyst lifetimes. In the fifth chapter the synthesis and characterization of a series of ionic liquids incorporating the allyl functionality and some nascent reactions that they undergo, indicating that they are useful precursors to a wide range of other functionalized ionic liquids, will be described. Chapter 6 reports on a concept of dual-functionalized ionic liquids. Specifically imidazolium cations with various functionalities are combined with the nitrile functionalized anion [CH3CH(BF3)CH2CN]-, aiming at reducing the melting point and visocity of ionic liquids. In the final chapter the ionic liquid, 1-methyl-3-(4-vinylbenzyl)-imidazolium chloride, is prepared and polymerized to form a macromolecule that is subsequently used as a transition metal nanoparticle stabilizer. A methodology that enables transition metal nanoparticle transfer between liquid phases, via surface modification of the nanoparticles by anion exchange, is described.

Abstract:Ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents are of growing interest as solvents for the resource-efficient synthesis of inorganic materials. This review covers such chemical reactions of various deep eutectic solvents and types of ionic liquids, including metal-containing ionic liquids, [BF 4 ] – or [PF 6 ] – -based ionic liquids, basic ionic liquids, and chalcogen-containing ionic liquids. This includes cases, in which cations or anions or both are incorporated into the final products. The purpose of this review is to raise caution on the chemical reactivity of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents and to establish a guide for their proper use.

Abstract:The review considers the features of the processes of the electrochemical synthesis of nanostructures in ionic liquids (ILs), including the production of carbon nanomaterials, silicon and germanium nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles, nanomaterials and surface nanostructures based on oxides. In addition, the analysis of works on the synthesis of nanoscale polymer films of conductive polymers prepared using ionic liquids by electrochemical methods is given. The purpose of the review is to dwell upon an aspect of the applicability of ILs that is usually not fully reflected in modern literature, the synthesis of nanostructures (including unique ones that cannot be obtained in other electrolytes). The current underestimation of ILs as an electrochemical medium for the synthesis of nanomaterials may limit our understanding and the scope of their potential application. Another purpose of our review is to expand their possible application and to show the relative simplicity of the experimental part of the work.

Abstract:The novel synthesis of task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) introducing piperazine substructures was described. Piperazine functional groups were easily grafted onto an imidazolium cationic derivative via a simple four-step process starting from available materials such as imidazole, ethylene glycol, and 1-butylamine or 3-dimethylaminopropylamine. Effects of pH, temperature, and structure of functional groups on the performance of liquid–liquid extraction of Cu2+, Ni2+, and Co2+ from water were investigated. It was found that TSILs were efficient for removal of these metal ions in mild acid solutions. The TSIL with an extra nitrogen atom showed a higher capability to separate metal ions, especially for Cu2+. This may be ascribed to the intrinsic structure of the functional groups – the more coordination sites, the higher the affinity for the metal ions. Furthermore, the thermodynamics indicated that the extraction process was exothermic and spontaneous in nature.

Abstract:Chirality shows an important role in chemistry. Ionic liquids have a special character different from common organic solvents for their alterable structures. Chiral ionic liquids can be gotten when chirality is induced to ionic liquids. They may be used to chiral synthesis, chiral separation, or chiral catalysis. Those chiral ionic liquids reported before are presented in this review, and discussed especially from the viewpoint of designing functionalized ionic liquids. Three criteria for designing and synthesizing ionic liquids from natural chiral materials are brought out.

Abstract:Due to their physical properties including high thermal stability, very low vapor pressure and high microwave absorption, ionic liquids have attracted great attention as solvents for the synthesis of nanomaterials, being considered as greener alternatives to traditional solvents. While usual solvents often need additives to avoid nanoparticles coalescence, some ionic liquids can dispense their use, being able to stabilize nanoparticles in dispersion. In order to quantify how the ionic liquids can affect both the aggregation thermodynamics and kinetics, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to simulate the evolution of concentrated dispersions and to compute the potential of mean force between nanoparticles of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic nature in two imidazolium-based ionic liquids, which differ from each other by the length of the cation alkyl-group. Depending on the nature of the nanoparticle, structured layers of the polar and apolar regions of the ionic liquid can be formed close to its surface and those layers lead to activation barriers for dispersed particles to get in contact. If the alkyl group of the ionic liquid is long enough to lead to domain segregation between ionic and apolar portions of the solvent, the layered structure around the particle becomes more structured and propagates to several nanometers away from its surface. The leads to stronger barriers close to the contact and also in multiple barriers at larger distances that result from the unfavorable superposition of solvent layers of opposing nature when the nanoparticles approach each other. Those long-range solvent-mediated forces not only provide kinetic stability to dispersions, but also affect their dynamics and lead to a long-range ordering between dispersed particles that can be explored as a template for the synthesis of complex materials.
